Short Bio
Prof. João Cordeiro is an Assistant Professor at the School of Arts of the University of Évora. His artistic, scientific, and professional career has developed in the field of digital media, with a particular interest in the intersection of sound and visual arts. He holds a Master’s degree in Sound and Image and a PhD in Science and Technology of the Arts from the Catholic University of Portugal. Highlights of his curriculum include professional experience at several international higher education institutions, where he has taught — both in-person and remotely — more than 50 courses (Portugal, Macau, and the United Kingdom); experience in academic coordination and the design/accreditation of successful academic curricula; supervising experience of academic projects (undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels); and research missions at internationally renowned institutions (Stanford University in California, Queen Mary University in London, and the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm).
Publications
João Cordeiro has been developing his artistic, scientific and professional work around the subject of sound, mostly as a researcher, sound designer and musician. He holds a Master degree in Sound Design and a PhD in Science and Technology of the Arts – specialization in Computer Music, awarded by the Portuguese Catholic University in Porto. His research interests include (but are not limited to): communication, social media, new media, computer music, film sound, soundscapes studies and sonic interaction design. He has been teaching in higher education since 2008 and is currently an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Creative Industries - Saint Joseph University, Macau.

Year 1 Bachelor
This module introduces basic concepts of algorithmic problem solving and logical thinking. It covers problem solving strategies, basic data structures, as well as data and procedural abstraction. Through step-by-step practice, students learn basic skills to write their own code in an easy-to-master programming language for simple problem solving, and to perform simple debugging and testing. It serves as the first programming module and requires no prerequisite.

Year 2 Bachelor
Radio Practice is a module dedicated to explore the concepts and techniques used in radio broadcasting, ranging from conceptualization of a radio show (where the content and form should be adequate to the listening target and medium of diffusion) to the audio mastering of the final product (a primarily technical skill). A practice-based approached is preferred during classes, with hands-on exercises setting the stage for the introduction of theoretical concepts. The three stages of a radio production - pre-production, production and post-production – are presented as the paradigm for all projects.
This module introduces students to music, the spoken word and other sounds as an art form. Different musical styles are discussed. Students also have their voices trained and work together in a choir to perform a work and work individually to read chosen pieces. Students also work individually with computer software to create their own audio pieces, and to record live performances. The best student works in this module are broadcast on the university Internet radio station.
This module lets students explore radio as a means of communication and as a business, and as part of the module students undertake work for the university’s Internet radio station. Students are exposed to station financing and management, content selection and programming, intellectual property ownership, technical operations and on-air performance from both theoretical and practical perspectives. The relationships between the business and the wider community are considered.
This course module introduces students to basic theories and techniques for digital audio recording, editing, and mixing. Instruction covers the fundamentals of microphone usage, mixing console operation, and digital recording and editing. A heavy emphasis is put on laboratory work that focuses on the computer based production of radio-style commercials that include voice with music to develop and improve engineering and production skills. Students are also expected to participate in the recording, editing and mixing of live performances.

Year 3 Bachelor
This interdisciplinary course discusses the consumer as the focus of the marketing system. Course stresses the use of knowledge about consumer behavior in marketing decisions. It examines the contributions of anthropology, sociology, psychology, strategy, and economics to the understanding of consumer buying behavior. Explores individual behavioral variables (needs, motives, perceptions, attitudes, personality, and learning) and group influences (family, social groups, culture, and business) as they affect the consumer decision-making process. Analyzes how marketing programs, especially the communications mix, can be developed to reflect a commitment to providing consumer satisfaction.
LBA204 Consumer Behavior (2cr) / LBA240 Consumer Behavior (3cr)
This module considers advertising and promotions. The goals and purposes of advertising and promotions are considered, research results in the field are examined and different kinds of advertisements and promotions are reviewed and critically evaluated. Economic and financial issues are fully considered. As part of this module students stage a substantial public conference or exhibition, planning and executing the event and all associated advertising and promotional activities.
Year 4 Bachelor
This module reviews and audits the functional and operational activities and processes in typical communications and public relations practices and the common issues and concerns of practice managers. Ethical issues, such as ownership of intellectual property and conflicts of interest, are considered. As part of this module, students are often seconded to work in a communications/public relations practice for 2-4 weeks, and interview the management of the practice, and report their findings regarding the way the practice operates and is managed.
Students are expected to be conversant with some of the most pertinent literature of and for our times. Even though we disavow the relative merits of fixed lists of works considered classics, we do affirm the intrinsic value of communal reading and theorizing. Reading lists will be defined and evolve through proposals from faculty and students.

This module explores the demands and conventions of academic reading and writing. Students will develop the skills needed to master academic writing in scientific areas. They will learn how to analyse and synthetise information from several sources and how to apply critical reading and writing skills. Reading lists will be defined and evolve through proposals from faculty and students.With the first Web Development module as the prerequisite, this introduces module students to more advanced concepts such as tables, forms, frames, and style sheets, and JavaScript programs. It takes students into the world of Web-based multimedia and discusses important topics, from very easy to implement multimedia enhancements to more advanced script-based media. Students will learn step-by-step professional design and implementation of the latest Web-based techniques. Important protocols and popular development tool sets for Web and multimedia development, such as Dreamweaver, Flash, XML, and SMIL, are introduced.
Year 1 Doctorate
This module will start with an introduction to the historical foundation of the scientific method, the main philosophical currents that have shaped scientific thinking, and how modern science operates. The module will then provide an overview on the different research designs and methodologies adopted in various fields of knowledge. A final emphasis will be given to techniques of academic writing, publication, and scientific communication.
This module enables students to plan and conduct qualitative research studies. The module introduces instrumentation for data collection, including interviews, observation, and reflection on practice. For qualitative studies, it considers matters of researcher bias, sampling, piloting, reliability and validity in the conduct of research, operationalizing research questions; the politics and micro-politics of research; insider and outsider research. This module also aims to enable students to analyze and interpret and present the results of different kinds of qualitative studies.
This module aims to introduce participants to key elements of doctoral research in the broad sense of an Academic framework. It focuses on providing an understanding of the research support Mechanisms at USJ and in overviews of the main research specialisation fields within the University of Saint Joseph, namely Business Administration; Education; Global Studies; Government Studies; History; Information Systems; Psychology; Religious Studies; Science. The course also provides an opportunity for the students to present and discuss their own work in a seminar environment.
This Module provides an initial experience of supervised research work where students will work with their intended supervisor in a collaborative tutorial model that resembles the practice of Thesis Supervision. During the Module the intended supervisor will guide the student trough multiple meetings (up to 15) during a full academic year The students will conduct autonomous research that should result in a preliminary literature review, research contextualisation and a thesis proposal completely finished and prepared to be submitted to the Foundation Year Final thesis proposal review and assessment instances.

In the current media technology landscape, the production of audiovisual content has been democratised. The consumers became the producers. All over the world, countless examples of fortuitous soundbites and YouTube© clips are making the headlines in major media publishers. Nonetheless, to achieve a professional standard quality, it is important to master media-specific practices, techniques and workflows, which go beyond the mere technological proficiency.
The goal of this module is to introduce students to standard audiovisual production techniques, from preproduction to post-production stages, covering photography, film and audio production.
This module covers innovative technologies that are becoming an increasingly important part of non-tertiary education. These technologies enhance student learning, individualize instruction, and improve communication with parents. Some examples are web based tools, mobile devices, open content, and game-based learning. Ideas and skills for integrating technology effectively into teaching are part of the module.
