Short Bio

Dr. Zhang Shuguang is Professor of Global Studies and Vice Rector for External Affairs and Institutional Development at the University of Saint Joseph. He also serves as member of Talent Development Committee and Creative Industry Committee of the Macau SAR Government. He owned a Ph.D. in international history from The Ohio University and Olin post-doctoral fellowship in international security at Yale University. His academic career in higher education has been truly international: he taught for 16 years at the University of Maryland (USA) and worked respectively as a Research Fellow at the Nobel Peace Institute of Norway, a visiting professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, as well as a Distinguished “Changjiang” Professor and Vice President at Shanghai International Studies University of China. Before joining USJ, he was Senior Vice Rector for Academic Affairs at Macau University of Science and Technology (2011-2015) and Rector of City University of Macau (2015-2020).


Publications

Professor Zhang is the author of four academic books in English including: Beijing’s Economic Statecraft during the Cold War (The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2014), Economic Cold War (Stanford University Press, 2001), Mao’s Military Romanticism (University Press of Kansas, 1995) and Deterrence and Strategic Culture (Cornell University Press, 1992). He has also authored six academic books in Chinese and edited seven books in English and Chinese. He has contributed over fifty book chapters and journal articles in the field of Cold War international history and Chinese-American relations. He has been a frequently invited reviewer for several international journals and book publishers including Harvard University Press and on the Editorial Board of Cold War International History Studies.
