Tao Chen
Short Bio
Tao Chen holds a Master Degree in Chinese-Portuguese Translation and Interpreting from Macao Polytechnic University and has a deep understanding of the theoretical aspects of translation and interpreting, acquired through his academic experience, which provides him with a solid academic foundation.
With the goal of further deepening his knowledge and specialized skills in translation and interpretation between Chinese and Portuguese languages, Tao Chen is currently working on his doctoral thesis at the University of Minho, Portugal, where his research focuses on the study of intercultural issues in the literature translation and on a comparative analysis of different translation methodologies, which includes also AI and machine translation.
Tao Chen started his professional career as a translator and interpreter in 2015. During this period, drawing on his empirical experience, he developed a set of strategies and methodologies for both translation and interpreting, always grounded in linguistic and cultural differences. Some of his notable assignments include: interpreting for China’s Deputy Minister of Propaganda and Culture at the Chinese Film Festival in Portugal; interpreting for the Deputy Secretary-General of the Permanent Secretariat of the Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macao) during his visit to Changsha; interpreting for the delegation from the Monetary Authority of Macao during its participation in the 7th Meeting on Issuance and Treasury of the Central Banks of Portuguese-Speaking Countries, in Timor-Leste; translation into Portuguese of the book ‘Get to Know the World’s Largest Political Party: The Communist Party in China’.
He has been a member of the Department of Languages and Culture at the University’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities since 2024, where he holds the position of Senior Lecturer. He also taught at the Faculty of Language and Translation of Macao Polytechnic University between 2022 and 2024. In addition, Tao Chen is also passionate about language and translation/interpreting teaching, and has, over the years, taken part in other teaching activities in this field, notably the interpreting workshop in 2024, at the Bom Porto Centre in Macau and extracurricular Portuguese language courses, in 2024, at the Macau Institute of Management.
