Short Bio

Born and raised in Macau, Dr. Francisco Botelho started his academic career at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) in 2005, and is currently the Head of the Department of Social Work at USJ. He holds a PhD in Physiology from the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong (HKU), and a M.Sc in Neuroscience from the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London.

Dr. Francisco Botelho received the Best Young Investigator Award for 3 consecutive years (2012-2014) in international symposiums for his work in brain plasticity and GABAergic transmission, and was appointed as Honorary Assistant Professor at HKU in 2014.

Currently, his attention focuses on the implementation of the biopsychosocial model in the healthcare system of Macau and the Greater Bay Area, in order to understand biological and psychosocial components of various disorders such as autism and devise effective treatments and therapies.

He is Honorary Advisor of the Macau Society of Registered Psychotherapists, and member of the editorial board of the American Journal of Applied Psychology.
