Álvaro Barbosa and Angolan Musical Instrument Designer
Victor Gama embarked on a former 1970s oceanographic boat to begin a ten-day expedition to the Antarctic continent. Drifting between the islands off the Antarctic Peninsula, they collected video and audio recordings that would become inspirational artistic material for their upcoming creations. Through the lens of his camera, Barbosa captured the overwhelming natural beauty of Antarctica and published a book of photographs to share with the public a collection of inspiring images from this artistic expedition.
This concert features music pieces selected, improvised and composed by Barbosa, played jointly by the Macanese Pianist Christine Hong and guest musicians José Alberto Gomes and the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. They will perform experimental electro-acoustic compositions featuring the interactive music device developed and patented by Barbosa (the Radial String Chimes). Videos and sounds recorded on the Antarctic Peninsula will be projected and played during this performance, transporting the audience to a journey of majestic nature in the Last Frontier.
Don’t miss this uplifting experimental concert experience!

About the Talk
It is crucial that wastewater treatment systems fulfill entirely their function so water reuse may be allowed as the ecosystems protection.
Constructed wetlands are an ecotechnology to complement wastewater existing treatment systems or act as main treatment unit enhancing water quality. They are biological systems that intent to mimic biogeochemical processes that occur in natural wetlands in order to promote water depuration.
This talk intents to present the constructed wetlands (CW) use and functioning. In particular, a case study will be highlighted where a CW has been implemented at a real scale for a wastewater treatment coming from a tourism facility in a rural area.

ABOUT THE TALK
“An ‘inclusive’ education system can only be created if ordinary schools become more inclusive … if they become better at educating all children in their communities... ‘regular schools with [an] inclusive orientation are the most effective means of combating discriminatory attitudes, creating welcoming communities, building an inclusive society and achieving education for all (UNESCO, 2009). Cognitive differences are largely misunderstood by educators because the brain is a complex and hidden organ. This has meant that successful inclusion of learners with cognitive disabilities into community schools has been slow and often challenging. The lecture begins by discussing cognitive diversity affecting all of us. When cognitive differences interfere with our everyday functioning, specific learning disabilities may be diagnosed. When learning disabilities are generalised, intellectual disability is diagnosed. Children with intellectual disability, like their peers, require appropriate cognitive challenges to stay engaged in the classroom. The question of optimal challenge can be tricky. The lecture will explore how teachers might decide when to teach and when to compensate for a learner’s cognitive difficulty.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr Donna Couzens is an honorary research fellow in the School of Education at the University of Queensland, Australia. Donna’s research focuses on understanding and supporting diverse learners with a specific focus on cognitive, communication and behaviour differences. One of Donna’s research projects forms part of a longitudinal Down syndrome program hosted at the University of Queensland. This research seeks to understand influences on age-related change in cognitive development for learners with Down syndrome and implications of this development for teaching and learning. Donna has also been involved in research focussed on supporting learners with autism spectrum disorder, physical disabilities and students with specific learning disabilities. Donna is currently working with a team of researchers from Brunei and Singapore seeking to understand perceptions of staff involved in developing more inclusive classrooms."

About the Talk
The notion of learning, like our comprehension of cities, is undergoing a massive transition. As opposed to the classical top-down, checking-boxes, fixed-systems; we need to REread and REform the process of sharing and acquiring information. Both in their practice and in the educational pursuits the notion of RE:Learning the City is conceived of as a spatial and co-creational knowledge exchange, where professionals|citizens, foreigners|locals, lecturers|students, and craftsmen|researchers crash together in a free flowing information exchange – creating a multi-layered learning and doing process across disciplines, for all.

Description of the talk:
Tangible Musical Interfaces have become an emerging paradigm for the design of electronic musical instruments. In his presentation Prof. Kaltenbrunner will introduce the basics of tangible interaction design and briefly discuss the relation of human computer interaction and electronic music. This is motivated by the intention to overcome the limitations of the laptop as primary tool for contemporary electronic music practice, leading to the development of novel instruments and
tangible musical artefacts. Furthermore this presentation will also provide a personal perspective on the history of the Reactable and the development of its fundamental design concepts.
Short bio:
Martin Kaltenbrunner is Professor at the Interface Culture Lab at the University of Art and Design in Linz. Before his return to Austria he worked as researcher and lecturer at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, at the MIT Medialab Europe in Dublin, and further European universities. As co-founder of Reactable Systems he had been mainly responsible for the interaction design concepts behind the Reactable, a tangible modular synthesizer. The instrument has been shown at several international media art and music festivals, and was awarded with the Prix Ars Electronica Golden Nica for Digital Music. His research around the topic of tangible user interfaces has been employed for the realization of numerous artistic and scientific projects in that area.

About the Talk
With increasing industrialisation, metal pollution has become a new emerging environmental problem in many estuaries in China. Our understanding of the scale of metal pollution as well as the impact on estuarine ecosystem is still limited, largely due to the lack of recognition of persistence of metal pollution. In this lecture, I will discuss metal pollution in Southern China Estuaries, and their impact on local organisms.
About the Speaker
Prof. Wen-Xiong Wang is the Chair Professor in the Division of Life Science, HKUST. Prof. Wang’s major research interest is to understand the biogeochemistry, bioavailability and toxicity of metals to aquatic organisms. Prof. Wang has authored in excess of 360 peer-reviewed publications on subjects related to metal ecotoxicology (geochemistry, bioaccumulation and toxicity) and biogeochemistry (biologically-mediated cycling of metals). He is the corresponding or first author for the majority of his publications. He is the Editor of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, and Aquatic Biology, and the Associate Editors of Environmental Pollution and Estuaries and Coasts, and serves in the Editorial Boards of many other international journals in environmental sciences. His work is widely cited, with a current H-index of 46. He received the prestigious Overseas Distinguished Young Scientist Award from the Chinese National Science Foundation in 2002, the Biwako Prize for Ecology in Japan for his work on metals in aquatic systems, and the first Prize in Natural Science (as a sole PI) from the Ministry of Education in China for his work on the trophic transfer of metals.

He now becomes the President of the Catholic Foundation for Higher Education, our title-holder, and we look forward to working closely with him to ensure the quality of the service we provide. With his extensive experience of university life, we believe Bishop Lee will help us adjust to the developing aims of the diocese and to the needs of society.
We take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Bishop Lai, as he steps down, for his support and supervision of the university for more than a decade. He has been a familiar figure with USJ since Prof. João Lourenço was its first Rector, and we have grown accustomed to his discreet but unfailing presence in all of USJ’s community masses, graduations and other significant events. We will always consider him a Friend of USJ.

The wetland management of Macao
Wetlands play a pivotal role in the maintaining the ecological balance of the local system by its functions as sources, sinks, and transformers of a multitude of chemical, biological, and genetic materials. The interaction of human society with wetlands to obtain multiple benefits-natural resources, amenities and environmental services such as ground water, fisheries, migratory birds habitat, etc. Anthropogenic stress due to the urban development and population growth has severely affected these ecosystems sustainability.
Macao is situated in the bird migration route between Siberia and Australia. Every winter large numbers of migratory birds come to Macao to live. To conserve the wetland resource of Macao, several wetland reservation zones were set up and managed by Macao SAR government, and meanwhile continuous ecological monitoring of various habitats in these wetlands are carried out to ensure habitats and facilities meeting the needs of wildlife.
Different types of management measures for each of the habitat types are developed and implemented, for the goal of providing the greatest quantity and highest quality of habitat possible to support waterfowl, other wildlife and plants, and to increase biodiversity. The Habitat Management Works can be divided into three aspects, namely the water, vegetation and mudflats. The lecture will explain the wetland management and biodiversity with wonderful video and photos, in order to make the student understanding the wetland’s ecological function easy.
