A Golden Age on the Walls | Special Exhibition on Tang Dynasty Murals: Encountering the Tang Dynasty

Apr

The Special Exhibition on Tang Dynasty Murals “A Golden Age on the Walls – Encountering the Tang Dynasty” will be open from 30th of April to 11th of May, 2024.

The Tang dynasty (618-907 CE) was a golden age in Chinese history. The Tang retained traditions from the Qin and Han dynasties while interlacing the cultures of the East and the West, creating an era of prosperity unlike any other dynasty in history. Paintings thrived as an art form during the Tang dynasty, giving rise to innumerable renowned painters such as Wu Daozi, Yan Liben, Zhang Xuan, and Zhou Fang. Mural painting was one of the important forms of artistic expression during this period.

Tang dynasty mural paintings have survived over a thousand years thanks to the excavation and preservation efforts of archaeologists and cultural heritage conservators in Shaanxi since the mid-20th century. They have now re-entered our world, giving us to glimpse the vibrant life of the Tang people.

The days of youth create the most wondrous self-seeking journey. It’s the most energetic and passionate period in one’s life. They’re the turning point for a new life; they’re the starting point for the dash towards the goalpost.

The flourishing land of the Tang gave birth to many young people with ambitions, enthusiasm, and spirit. When their youthful years crossed with the Tang dynasty 1,300 years ago, what kind of life did they lead? What kind of vibrant world did they create? Let us meet them in the Tang dynasty through the exhibition today, heading for a youthful encounter!
