Are your kids talkative? Or are they pointing but not talking? Parents may worry about their young children’s oral language development.
Over 200 parent-participants from six projects schools gathered to join the first online joint-schools parent seminar run by the USJ Domingos Lam Centre for Research in Education (DLCRE) partnership project "GEGCLEAR" in the morning of 19 February 2022. This seminar focused on helping parents understand the major characteristics of young children’s (3-4 years old) language development and offering some guidance on parent-child oral language practices.
Based on enhancing young children’s ability to express themselves using vocabularies, this seminar highlighted three aspects, namely, “enriching vocabularies”, “sentence building”, “linkage to reading”, and introduced a series of skills and games that parents and their children can play at home. The seminar was held mainly in an interactive mode despite the distance. Games and parent-child language practices were incorporated into the seminar. Children’s active participation and enjoyment of these games enhanced parents’ confidence in adopting these games in their homes.
DLCRE partnership project "GEGCLEAR" is funded by the Galaxy Entertainment Group Foundation. Currently six project schools participated in this project including: Macau Baptist College, Colégio Santa Rosa de Lima (Chinese Section), Escola Dom João Paulino, Lou Hau High School Affiliated Kindergarten, Fu Luen School and Our Lady of Fatima Girls’ School (listed in no specific order).
Teacher training courses and parent seminars have been held in the past to offer support in language development to project schools, children, and parents.

On the morning of February 21st, 2022, a delegation of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao Special Administrative (SAR) Region led by its deputy director Zheng Xincong, visited the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Ilha Verde Campus for a campus tour and meeting. The delegation was warmly received by USJ representatives, including vice-rector for Internationalisation and Strategic Development Prof. Álvaro Barbosa, vice-rector for Institutional Development Prof. Zhang Shuguang, and administrator Dr. Alejandro Salcedo.
During the campus tour, the delegation visited the Library, the Residential Hall, Student Activity Centre, Audio-Visual Production Studio, Design Studio, Architectural Studio, and the Digital Fabrication Lab. Vice-rector Zhang introduced the campus to deputy director Zheng during the tour, explaining that the Ilha Verde Campus was officially put into use in 2017 with the support of the Macao SAR government, becoming now the university's main campus. After the tour, the delegation held a meeting with the present Senior Management, Deans, and Head of Departments of USJ.
In the meeting, vice-rector Barbosa introduced the university's development history and current situation and emphasised the characteristics of USJ of being a student-oriented and multicultural institution with adherence to the values of innovation and collaboration and environmental protection. Vice-rector Barbosa also remarked that USJ has the distinct advantage of sharing international education and inheriting the Portuguese language and culture. As a young university, it has achieved good results in terms of education quality, ranking fourth in the Greater China region in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
In addition to thanking the Liaison Office of the People's Republic of China for its continuous support and concern for the development of USJ, Vice-rector Zhang expressed that USJ is cooperating with the higher education strategies of the SAR government, especially towards mainland student recruitment. He also stated that the education policy of the University is closely related to social needs, focusing on technology research and development and technology transfer, and will highly cooperate with and integrate the economic development of the Greater Bay Area in the fields of data engineering, brain sleep research, and smart health care.
Deputy Director Zheng noted that USJ is a major academic platform for the integration of Chinese and Western cultures, playing a very important role in the development of Chinese culture and humanities studies while strengthening the country's awareness of patriotism and love for Macao. Agreeing with the educational philosophy of USJ, Deputy Director Zheng says that in addition to continuing to adhere to the excellent standards of education and disciplines, USJ can also meet the needs of the society, building an educational foundation with morality as its standard, and promote academic cooperation with Portuguese-speaking countries and European countries, playing an indispensable role in the “Belt and Road” and the “China-Portuguese Economic and Trade Exchange Platform".
Lastly, deputy director Zheng also pointed out that due to the impact of the pandemic, more mainland students and parents will consider Macau to experience its unique international education and living environment. To this end, the Liaison Office of the People's Republic of China will vigorously support USJ in the admission recruitment work of students in the mainland.
Among the delegation of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR were Ms. Xu Ting, Minister of the Education and Youth Affairs Department; Mr. Shi Shuzheng, Deputy Minister of the Education and Youth Affairs Department; Mr. Li Yongxian, Director of the University Office under the Education and Youth Affairs Department; Mr. Xu Zhiping, Deputy Director of the University Office under the Education and Youth Affairs Department; Mr. Li Yongle, Assistant of the Education and Youth Affairs Department; Mr. Feng Longfei, Secretary of the Education and Youth Affairs Department.

On 15 February 2022, the Macao Association of Chinese and Western Philosophy 澳門中西哲學學會 (MACWP) held its first event at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Seminary Campus on the theme “A Taste of Existentialism in Macao”. A turnout of around 30 guests enjoyed the event. Professor Franz Gassner, Dean of the Faculty of Religious Studies and Philosophy (FRSP), and Dr. Tyler McNabb, Associate Professor of Philosophy of FRSP, were invited guest speakers, sharing their thoughts on crucial questions prepared by the association.
Followed by a tour to the new Seminary Library, the guests got impressed by the number of books available in philosophy, ethics, religious studies, and theology. The event concluded with a networking session, gathering and uniting people who are interested in philosophy to exchange topics.
MACWP was established in January 2022 by a group of USJ Philosophy Alumni, including: Joshua Yuan, Maggie Chiang, Terence Hun, Waison Lei and Chon Lai. The Association aims to bring together the essence of Chinese and Western thought, to promote in-depth exchange of diverse cultures, and to foster philosophical reflection among the population. The association will contribute to the harmonious development of Macao as a base for exchange and cooperation with the Chinese mainstream culture in co-existence with multiple other cultures and ways of thinking.
For more information on MACWP and upcoming events, please visit their Facebook or Instagram. You may also become a member by registering here.

Alvin Plantinga and his fellow Reformed Epistemologists’ claim that Christian belief can be “properly basic” has transformed analytic assessments of how the Christian faith can possess positive epistemic status. However, explicit reactions to “Reformed Epistemology” from a Catholic perspective – which mainly date from the early 1990’s – vary from hostile incredulity to the mixture of appreciation and considered critique typified by the best-known Catholic response to Plantinga (Linda Zagzebski ed. Rational Faith: A Catholic Response to Reformed Epistemology (1993)).
But in the thirty years since Rational Faith was published, philosophical evaluations of Reformed Epistemology and its relationship to traditional Christian accounts of faith and reason have developed considerably. Epistemologists have offered a variety of fresh critiques, defences, and adaptions of Plantinga’s account of warranted faith. Additionally, detailed historical research has compared Plantinga’s epistemology to the work of many historical theologians and philosophers, including Catholic thinkers such as Augustine, Aquinas, Scotus, Newman, Balthasar, Maritain, and MacIntyre.
The Warranted Catholic Belief conference (online, 18th - 19th March 2022) will begin a long-overdue reconsideration of the relationship between Reformed Epistemology and Catholic thought. We wish to highlight the influence of Reformed Epistemology as an apologetic project and its potential for adoption, adaption or critique from a Catholic perspective. A further goal is to stimulate historical conversation about the affinities – and differences – between Plantinga’s epistemology and historical or contemporary Catholic accounts of faith. Finally, we are keen to hear from non-Catholics about their views on the theological underpinnings of Reformed Epistemology.

ABOUT THE SERIES:
Can we know that God exists? Is there evidence for God? Is there a conflict between science and religion? What constitutes good evidence for a religious claim? This lecture series explores answers to these questions.
ABOUT THE TALK:
Reformed epistemology (RE) is the thesis that religious belief can be rational, justified, or warranted apart from argument. In this lecture, Professor McNabb argues for this thesis. After utilizing tools from contemporary analytic epistemology to demonstrate the plausibility of RE, Professor McNabb explores whether or not cognitive science of religion creates a problem for the RE project.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Tyler Dalton McNabb
Tyler Dalton McNabb is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Saint Joseph, Macao. Professor McNabb is the author of Religious Epistemology (CUP), Co-author of Plantingian Religious Epistemology and World Religions (Lexington), and Classical Theism and Buddhism (Bloomsbury), and Co-editor and contributor to Debating Christian Religious Epistemology (Bloomsbury). Professor McNabb has authored/co-authored around 20 peer review articles in journals such as Religious Studies, International Journal of Philosophy of Religion, European Journal of Philosophy of Religion, and Religions.

ABOUT THE TALK:
In the philosophical context, the term ‘holiness’ can refer to spiritual excellence or wholeness. In classical Confucianism, ‘holiness’ could be expressed using the virtue of cheng since it contains the meaning of integrity or wholeness. The process of spiritual transformation unfolds over three stages according to a traditional Christian understanding. Beginners go through the purgative stage, the proficient undergo the illuminative stage while the perfect pass through the unitive stage. Similarly, spiritual transformation is described in three stages in the Daxue (greater learning). Beginners manifest the brightness of virtue in themselves, the proficient restore the brightness of virtue in others and the perfect attain utmost goodness. The Daxue also presents a detailed outline of eight steps required for spiritual transformation. On this account, the purgative stage requires the first five steps while the illuminative stage requires the last three steps. The unitive stage involves a profound repetition of the entire eight steps.

To promote cooperation and exchanges in higher education between Jiangsu and Macao, and to broaden the international vision of Jiangsu university students, the 2021 Jiangsu Provincial Government Scholarship Programme of Overseas Studies for Undergraduates was launched in July of last year (2021).
After the successful summer programme last year, over 50 students and staff members from Jiangsu province are visiting the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) for another four-day short-term exchange programme from 8 February to 12 February 2022. This exchange trip was postponed prior due to travel restrictions caused by the latest pandemic situation.
The programmes provided by USJ cover two main areas: International Business & Economic Globalisation (at Ilha Verde Campus), lectured face-to-face by professors from the Faculty of Business and Law (FBL), and Environmental Science Policy and Management (at Nape Campus), lectured by professors from the Institute of Science and Environment (ISE).
The opening ceremony was held on the morning of 8 February, 2022, at both Ilha Verde Campus and Nape Campus simultaneously.
Prof. Keith Morrison, Vice-rector for Academic Affairs of USJ, and Prof. Jenny Lao-Phillips, Dean of Faculty of Business and Law, attended the opening ceremony at Ilha Verde Campus. Prof. Keith Morrison delivered the aims and purposes of courses offered by USJ and welcomed students from Jiangsu Province. Ms. Guo Xiangqin, Representative of Jiangsu Education Services for International Exchange, expressed that since the programme was launched during the pandemic, it would be a precious opportunity for students to study at USJ and experience life in Macao.
Prof. Zhang Shuguang, Vice-rector for External Affairs and Institutional Development of USJ, and Prof. David Gonçalves, Dean of the Institute of Science and Environment, attended the opening ceremony at Nape Campus. During the ceremony, Prof. Zhang shared his own experience of studying abroad and encouraged students to inspire others with their stories at USJ, while Prof. David Gonçalves greeted and introduced the research facilities and laboratories of the Nape Campus to all the students, wishing them an enjoyable experience at USJ.
Guests who attended the opening ceremony include: Ms. Guo Xiangqin, Representative of Jiangsu Education Services for International Exchange, Mr. Wang Haitao, Chairman of National Conditions Education Association (Macau), along with professors from the Faculty of Business and Law in charge of teaching the programme, namely, Prof. Alessandro Lampo, Prof. Emil Marques and Prof. Àngelo Patrício Rafael, as well as professors from the Institute of Science and Environment, Programme Coordinator for the Bachelor of Environmental Sciences, Prof. Karen Araño Tagulao and Prof. Thomas Lei.

On Friday, January 28, 2022, the Rector, Professor Stephen Morgan attended the High Council meeting of Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP), which (along with the Diocese of Macao) founded and continues to oversee the University of Saint Joseph (USJ). As a sign of the close relationship between USJ and UCP, the Rectors of the two universities serve on the highest governing bodies of each other's institutions.
During his visit to Lisbon, the Rector of UCP, Professor Isabel Capeloa Gil took Professor Morgan to visit UCP's brand new medical school at Sintra, a facility made possible by the support and sponsorship of the Shanghai-based Fosun Group. The school is pioneering an integrated, problem solving based approach to the training of the next generation of doctors from its state of the art smart-facility. The two rectors also explored the development of joint programmes between the two universities and the exchange of academic staff and students.
Looking to the future - and beyond the pandemic - Rector Morgan observed that USJ was a university in, of and for China but that its roots drew deeply on its Portuguese heritage. "USJ is an example of the one base for cultural exchange and cooperation and part of the one platform for economic and trade development between China, Portugal and the Portuguese speaking countries. USJ is these things or it is nothing: our link with UCP guarantees that." Morgan said. "It certainly helps that the Rector of UCP grew up in, knows and loves Macao. As Honorary President of our USJ General Council her commitment to the relationship between our two universities is a constant reminder of our firm institutional relationship. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the founding of USJ and I am acutely conscious of the conditions that led to that event. In 1996, the authorities in Beijing, Macao and Portugal saw a unique opportunity for a higher education institution that could embody and promote harmonious relations between China, Portugal and the Portuguese-speaking world. That was our mission then: it remains our mission today."
###

On February 29, 2022, members of the Alumni Association of the University of Saint Joseph (AAUSJ) gathered with International students living in-campus at the Residential Hall to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
AAUSJ prepared and gave the international students "CNY Blessing Bags" or bags filled with Chinese new year goodies such as traditional candies, introduced Chinese traditions during the festival such as writing "Fai Chun" and explaining the meaning of each writing/blessing, along with snacking on traditional dishes.
International students were excited to share their personal experience in Macao and their studies and projects during the past semester with the alumni and were welcomed with feedback and encouragement.
The gathering promoted community engagement among students and alumni of USJ, and was organised by AAUSJ and the Office for Student and Alumni Affairs (OSAA).

To celebrate Chinese New Year and successively enrich campus life and have students experience Chinese culture, the University of Saint Joseph Students’ Association (USJSA) organised a "CNY traditions station" from January 19 to 21, in the new Student Lounge area.
Students and staff members had the opportunity to learn or practice traditional Chinese calligraphy on "Fai Chun", a traditional CNY decoration featuring good blessings using ink on red paper, and taste traditional sweets served only during this holiday.
The activities were partly funded Alumni Association of the University of Saint Joseph (AAUSJ), with the support of the Office for Students and Alumni Affairs (OSAA).

From November 30 to December 2, 2021, Year 3 students of the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Programme organised a three-day food and beverage charity sale in the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Ilha Verde Campus. The event aimed to raise funds for Caritas Macau and USJ's Department of Social Work's (DSW) activities in light of the Christmas spirit.
The event, titled BBQ&COFFEE, concluded with the strong support of the campus staff and students, raising a total of MOP$3992, with MOP$3200 reserved for Caritas Macau,. The remaining funds contributed towards the preparations of the 2021 USJ Social Work Pre-Christmas Party, an annual gathering of USJ Social Work students and staff, with the purpose of strengthening support networks and collaboration for future social workers.
(Prof. Jacky Ho, Head of the Department of Social Work and Prof. Helen Liu, Research Coordinator for Faculty of Social Science and Education, with the working team)
(Year 1 and 3 students’ collaborative efforts alongside department support ensured smooth sailing for the charity sale)
The 2021 pre-Christmas charity sale and party programme were designed by the Year 3 BSW students —Adam Chan, Charlie Lei, and Katherine Lei. Year 1 BSW students also offered their assistance for the charity sale and were tasked with booth management on the event's second day. Altogether, the students were able to enhance their skills in event planning through the experience. Essential skills such as communication, resource management, task distribution, negotiation, financial planning, accounting, and adaptive skills were all developed throughout the process. The students were also able to leverage their culinary skills during the 25th Anniversary of USJ and highlight the multitalented nature of USJ’s students to our esteemed guests.
(Year 3 BSW students Jaydan Wong and Bella Chan preparing a cup of coffee together. The pictured hotdog and Takoyaki were popular within the campus)
The official donation to Caritas Macau took place on January 20, 2022. Prof Helen Liu, Research Coordinator for Faculty of Social Science and Education (FSSE), and five Social Work student representatives were invited to the head office of Caritas Macau for the donation ceremony. The students were given an opportunity to speak with Mr. Paul Pun, the Secretary-General of Caritas Macau, about the field of social work and received encouraging words to continue servicing the community.

Rev. Professor Stephen Morgan, the Rector of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), met with the Bishop of Portsmouth, Rev. Dr. Philip Egan, for a courtesy visit in England on 17 January.
During the visit, Rector presented Bishop Egan with a copy of his new book titled "John Henry Newman and the Development of Doctrine: Encountering Change, Looking for Continuity", published last year by The Catholic University of America Press in Washington DC.
The highly praised new book provides an "analysis of the attempts by John Henry Newman to account for the historical reality of doctrinal change within Christianity in the light of his lasting conviction that the idea of Christianity is fixed by reference to the dogmatic content of the deposit of faith".
The Rector is also attending a meeting in Portugal this week with the Board of Trustees (Conselho Superior) of Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP) before returning to Macao in February.

Hailing from Ho Chi Minh city, Kent Wu is one of our many alumni stories here at USJ. In this exclusive interview with him, we delve into his origins, how he came to join our USJ family, his experiences within our institution, and his future plans as a blossoming architect.
After graduating high school, Kent decided to pursue work instead of continuing his studies. This decision led him out of Vietnam and into Macau, where he would spend the next few years working multiple jobs within different departments of hotels and casinos. However, after working in the hospitality industry, Kent recalled his fondness for Architecture and how he could not explore this avenue before.
“I think I really liked the feel of architecture when I was a child, but it was difficult [to study] at the time when I graduated from high school. So I decided to go to work at that time, and after a few years, I realised I wanted to commit to studying again.”
With his passion for studying reignited, his journey into the world of Architecture began in 2016, when he enrolled in USJ’s five-year-long Bachelor of Architectural Studies programme. It was then that Kent became part of the USJ family.
As he recalls his experiences within our walls, Kent remembers the interactive teaching methods employed by our professors here in USJ. “The teaching is open-minded, especially when we come to discussion between professors and students. We have the opportunities to ask questions, and we can ask whatever we want.”
The Department of Creative Industries professors are practically Kent’s friends. “If I need to talk about someone, I talk to my professors”. However, amongst them all, Prof Francisco Pinheiro is the one who inspired Kent the most due to his devotion to teaching and kindness towards all students.
His breakthrough was during his fourth year of study when Prof Nuno Soares insisted Kent participate in the “2020 Golden Lotus International Design Competition for Students”. It was at this competition that Kent blossomed - all three of his submissions won a prize in their respective categories: Architectural Design, Interior Design and Soft Decoration. His highest honour was the Silver Award in the architectural design category.
Nevertheless, the most memorable experience in USJ for Kent was creating the graduation project where he spent all day, every day, for over three weeks, along with his classmates and professors, preparing for the model for his final project and the graduation exhibition.
“Levitating Aqua” is the name Kent gave to his final project based on the concept of a stream of water. The project is a Cultural Centre located next to the Border Gate in Northern Macao – a multifunctional complex with a museum, a theatre, retail, studios, restaurants and a carpark – aimed to create a Space for cultural exchange between Macau and Mainland China.
“I borrowed the flow of people between Macao and China and developed it into a concept that is like a stream of water. With the site being so big, how would I combine all the functions into one place? So I thought about the story of China. The story was about a drinking game of the older people when they gathered together to drink wine. They would sit around a canal and place a cup inside. When the cup flowed in front of somebody, they would have to drink it.”
The only difference between the concept of the game and Kent’s project is that the stream is elevated into the air, hence “Levitating Aqua”.
“How can I link it to the story I had just said? So, for example, I created a corridor around the cultural centre and arranged the museum hall and the corridor in a similar way to the story. The corridor will go around the building, like a circulation of the whole area. The exhibition hall will be just sitting around that corridor like the people in the story sitting around the canal to drink wine. In the story, the people sit around the canal and the cup goes around the canal. In my project, the people [will] become the building, the exhibition hall, and the cup will become the building going around that corridor to visit every exhibition.”
For Kent, studying architecture in Macao was a great choice because it is a place where East meets West and where “two kinds of architecture can stand next to each other”, creating unique architectural characteristics compared to other places. Apart from architecture, Kent also thinks that Macao is a very interesting place. He loves the friendly and multicultural environment. “I have so many friends from different countries so now I can speak about different cultures. I learned a lot from them.”
When his journey in USJ came to an end, Kent decided to leave Macao to continue pursuing his dreams in Architecture overseas. We are more than excited to see what he has in store for his journey!

ABOUT THE TALK:
Insects are one of the most diverse organism groups on the Earth, with around one million species discovered. This lecture will provide a brief introduction of insects and their roles such as pollinators, decomposers and soil engineers in the ecosystem. Measuring insect community can be applied in monitoring environmental changes because insects are an essential group due to their biomass and ecological roles in the ecosystems. This lecture covers brief insect identification and natural history, functional ecology, and community ecology. The participants are also invited to a follow-up workshop to survey the insect community to understand the impacts of climatic warming and other environmental changes on Macao’s coastal and mangrove ecosystems.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Chi-Man Leong (Danny)
HKU Ph.D. Candidate and National Geographic Emerging Explorer.
Leong Chi Man (Danny) is a biologist and an environmental educator. He has published 18 academic papers from his research in the areas of taxonomy, eco-physiology, biodiversity conservation, and community ecology. He is fully devoted to the study of the local insect biodiversity, which lead to the discovery of a new insect species named Leptanilla macauensis, from Colina da Ilha Verde. He holds a BSc and MPhil in Entomology and currently a PhD candidate in Biological Sciences at HKU. His present research focuses on the biodiversity of local insects and how they are affected by urbanisation. He also regularly delivers talks to promote the importance of insects and biodiversity to the public.

ABOUT THE TALK:
In the 80s, Pierre Hadot and Michel Foucault described Ancient Greek Philosophy as a "way of life". Using this expression, they wanted to highlight that in Greek Antiquity philosophizing implied a transformation of the person involved in the process. In the past years, more and more scholars investigating Chinese tradition have been using their expression of "philosophy as a way of life" to describe Chinese philosophy. One moment in Chinese tradition can especially echo an understanding of philosophy as a way of life: Neo-Confucianism as developed by Zhu Xi (1130-1200). This presentation will show how learning (xue學) in Zhu Xi's thought can echo to Hadot's understanding of philosophy.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Yves Vendé
After learning Mandarin Chinese at the University of Business and Economics in Beijing, Yves Vendee taught French and Latin for two years (2012-2014) at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou. In 2014, he joined the Ph.D. program of Sun Yat-sen (2014-2018) under the direction of Chen Shaoming (陳少明) and finished his dissertation in 2018 (title: From Comparison to Dialogue. Research on Zhu Xi’s Method of Reading from the Point of View of Inter-cultural philosophy). After a postdoc at Loyola Marymount University (Los Angeles, USA), he is now teaching philosophy at the Catholic University of Lille (France).
