ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
This exhibition presents drawings by Japanese architect Kon Wajiro (1888–1973), focusing on his observations of everyday life in Tokyo after the devastating 1923 earthquake. The work in the exhibition is primarily drawn from his book Modernologio and his surveys of “barracks” (makeshift structures for earthquake relief). Emphasizing Kon’s urban ethnography, as well as its significance as a design-based methodology for recording material change in post-disaster conditions, the drawings and photographs derive from observations of urban and domestic spaces in early-twentieth-century Tokyo, as well as from detailed recordings of people’s dress, body posture, and movement.
Originally held at the Arnold and Sheila Aronson Galleries, Sheila C. Johnson Design Center, Parsons The New School for Design, New York from 13–27 March 2014, this exhibition has been brought to Macau through the support of The Macau Foundation and the Faculty of Creative Industries at the University of Saint Joseph. The exhibition was made possible through the generous support of The Japan Foundation, New York; the School of Art and Design History and Theory at Parsons The New School for Design (New York); and the School of Cultural and Creative Studies of Aoyama Gakuin University (Tokyo). The exhibits belong to the Kon Wajiro Archive of Kogakuin University Library (Tokyo).

ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM
With its unique hybridization of ethnicities, identities, histories, cultures, and traditions, all being transformed at an accelerating rate by overwhelming quantities of tourists, money, and new construction, Macau is a city rife with incongruities and anachronisms. The urban spaces are suffused with mixtures of natural or artificial sounds and images, of coexisting historical and contemporary activities. Long-term exposure to these sensory phenomena affects our aesthetic standards, our behavioral patterns, and our perceptions of the division between the real and the virtual. Macau has a rich, multilevel soundscape, encompassing the labyrinthine old streets, the new high-rise housing projects, and the extensive waterfront. The entertainment and gaming complexes are clad with sophisticated media facades and video projections. Vestiges of traditional lifestyles coexist with the most contemporary globalized activities. The city is now a multi-sensorial experience that transcends conventional attempts to fully document it using two-dimensional drawings, or fully respond to it with physical interventions. This symposium will examine some of the ways that architects and artists have developed to document or engage the complexity and volatility of the contemporary city.

Date: 15 - 20 September 2014
Time: 5pm - 10pm
Venue:
Room B04 Communication Studio, University of Saint Joseph, Rua de Londres 16, Macau, China
Registration
Applicants please fill in the Skills Questionnaire(
click to download) and provide examples of works (reel, portfolio, etc.) properly identified via links (Youtube, Vimeo, etc) upon registration and email to joao.cordeiro@usj.edu.mo
Requirements
Students should have basic computer skills on moving images (video or animation).
Programme
The primary goal of the workshop is to introduce and consolidate a set of basic knowledge about the technique and art of video mapping as the art of projecting images on three-dimensional surfaces.
Alongside the theoretical and technical component, is intended to develop practical projects of video mapping with students, which culminate on a final presentation to the class. This way, students can put into practice the knowledge acquired and exercise creativity in collaboration with other colleagues.
The sessions will be organized into 3 distinct sections: (1) historical background and theory; (2) setting up hardware and software; (3) creative work sessions.
For the accomplishment of the artistic project, we intend to explore the possibility of including an open space devoted to the basic field of bamboo construction and paper techniques (used in the construction of kites and room dividers). The exploration of such techniques aim to function as a complement for creating objects-sculptures that can also serve as projection areas for the work developed.
Theoretical Topics
- The beginnings of video mapping: the cross-stitch, film, slide show, the pixel and live visuals
- Case studies: the creative collectives and individual cases
- The two main strands: artistic applications and functional applications; the free creation versus functional design
- The architectural space, volumetric, light and shadows: the geometry of space
- The look, the imagination and the urban space; the potential of interiors spaces
- Codes of communication involved in the creation of mapping: film, music video, animation, sculpture and architecture
- The audiovisual narrative; the relationship between music and the temporal dimension
Video mapping production techniques
- Equipment involved: hardware, software
- Types of mapping, calibration, overlapping projections, creating masks
- Facades vs. Objects; concave or convex surfaces, shadows, three-dimensionality
Target Audience
Academic community, art students and artists in general interested in developing video mapping skills.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Ivan Anthony Henares is President of the Heritage Conservation Society, Expert Member of the ICOMOS International Cultural Tourism Committee (ICTC), Trustee of the Nayong Pilipino Foundation and Secretary of the NCCA National Committee on Monuments and Sites. Ivan is a Senior Lecturer at the Asian Institute of Tourism of the University of the Philippines, Diliman. He was named one of The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) for 2012 in the field of Heritage Conservation.
He has championed the cause of Philippine heritage, helping bring heritage conservation to the mainstream especially through social media, pushing for the enactment of national laws and local legislation for heritage, educating Filipinos on the importance of conservation, monitoring heritage conservation issues around the country and ensuring the protection of significant historical and cultural sites.
ABOUT THE TALK
The cultural heritage of the Republic of the Philippines is a result of the diverse synergy of indigenous agricultural systems, vernacular architecture, historic trade routes, urban planning during the Spanish and American colonial periods, the development of architecture & design for an independent nation, and experiences with natural disasters which the country continues to face today. The country’s built heritage also has to face man-made challenges, as policy makers and stakeholders are just beginning to understand the value of heritage conservation to urban development and nation-building.
Despite these challenges, there have been successful conservation initiatives across the nation. The Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras are the country’s expression of the balance between man, sacred traditions, agricultural science, and the environment. In recent years, there had been conscientious and systematic efforts to ensure the restoration, conservation and physical rehabilitation of the property. Threats and concerns regarding the property that were identified in 2001, leading to its inclusion in the List of World Heritage in Danger, were addressed by the Provincial Government of Ifugao and government cultural agencies. After developing better management and planning measures, it was finally removed from the danger list in 2012.
Also in 2012, the UNESCO recognized the Historic Town of Vigan during the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention, giving it the Best Practice in World Heritage Management Award. According to the Philippine Government, Vigan was selected “for its good management practice with relatively limited resources, local community participation integrated in the various systems of heritage conservation and city management, and the multifaceted approach for the protection of the heritage site.”
In October 2013, the provinces of Bohol and Cebu were hit by a magnitude 7.2 earthquake that severely-damaged some of the best examples of Spanish colonial churches, buildings and fortifications in the Philippines. Many of them are National Cultural Treasures and National Historical Landmarks. It was considered the biggest disaster to hit Philippine cultural heritage since the Second World War. In November 2013, Typhoon Haiyan devastated the Philippines, destroying even more heritage properties in Central Philippines.
An inter-agency taskforce was created, composed of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, National Museum and National Historical Commission of the Philippines, to undertake the long and difficult process of recovery, reconstruction and restoration.
Many historic towns and cities are beginning to understand the importance of preserving built heritage and historic downtowns in urban development. Revitalization efforts in Calle Real (Iloilo City), the Escolta Business District, Santa Ana District, Rizal Park and Intramuros (City of Manila), and the historic centers of Angeles City and the City of San Fernando in Pampanga, Silay City in Negros Occidental, and the Municipality of Taal in Batangas, have become rallying points in the struggle to preserve the built heritage of the Philippines.

string(4357) "1. We are extending our Post-Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) by launching a specialization in Infant Education, intended to provide highly qualified professional training to existing and prospective kindergarten teachers. The shortage of professionals in the early years of education, accentuated by the baby boom during the Chinese year of the Dragon in 2012, has called for urgent measures in teacher formation.
2. Developed in line with current teaching training in renowned universities, but sensitive to the local context in Macao, our programme includes two modules of teaching practice whereby student-teachers are placed in local schools to observe, prepare classes, and develop a variety of educational activities with the children, under the guidance of qualified tutors. The course runs for ten months, during which students are exposed to, amongst others, the most relevant theories of education, childhood psychology, curriculum development, and didactics for infant education. Applications are now open until mid-September.
2. For those interested in studying our PGDE in Portuguese, rather than in Chinese or English, we now also providing a version taught by qualified Portuguese-speaking teachers.
At the request of the Bishop of Macau, USJ is committed to developing a full range of services in the area of teacher training and Education Research. In 2013-2014 we launched a Chinese and an English version of our Post-Graduate Diploma in Education, each of them with Primary and Secondary streams. Eighty students enrolled, and we are pleased to announce that one month after completion of the course the employment rate was 96%. This year, besides the new kindergarten extension and Portuguese version of our PGDE, we are opening for the first time a Bachelor in Education with a full quota of students.

ABOUT THE TALK
Since the 1560s, the Goa Inquisition
conducted several trials against
judaizers throughout the Estado
da Índia. Macao emerges in the letters of the inquisitors as a place of concealed Judaism that required the Holy Office's intervention. How did the Goa Inquisition try to act in Macao? What was its effect? How did the New Christians react to this new jurisdictional reality? These are some aspects that will be addressed here.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Miguel Rodrigues Lourenço is a PhD candidate in History at the Faculdade
de Ciências Sociais e Humanas of
theUniversidade Nova de Lisboa, where he is also a researcher of the Portuguese Centre for Global History.
Futhermore, he is a member and researcher of the Centre of Studies in Religious History of the Portuguese Catholic University and a Visiting Professor at the University of Saint Joseph. He has developed his research on the History of Macao and of the Philippines (XVIth-XVIIth centuries).

Ernesto is a 23-year-old medical student specializing in leprology, and Alberto, 29, is a biochemist. The film follows the young men as they unveil the rich and complex human and social topography of the Latin American continent. With a highly romantic sense of adventure, the two friends leave their familiar surroundings in Buenos Aires on a rickety 1939 Norton 500. Although the bike breaks down during the course of their eight-month journey, they press onward, hitching rides along the way. As they begin to see a different Latin America in the people they meet on the road, the diverse geography they encounter begins to reflect their own shifting perspectives. They continue to the heights of Machu Picchu, where the majestic ruins and the extraordinary significance of the Inca heritage have a profound impact on the young men. As they arrive at a leper colony deep in the Peruvian Amazon, the two are beginning to question the value of progress as defined by economic systems that leave so many people beyond their reach. Their experiences at the colony awaken within them the men they will later become by defining the ethical and political journey they will take in their lives.
