Exhibition REBOOT
Opening: Friday, 30 May, 6:30 p.m.
At
Ponte 9 (3/F Ponte 9, Rua das Lorchas)
Organised by USJ Faculty of Creative Industries
Exhibition: From 30 May to 14 June(Monday-Friday, 2-7pm)
The Faculty of Creative Industries at the University of Saint Joseph is very pleased to invite you for the opening of the USJ Design Student Exhibition "REBOOT" that will take place on 30 May, 6:30pm, at Ponte 9.The exhibition is supported by the Macao Foundation. It will be open from 30 May to 14 June, 2014 (Monday-Friday, 2-7 p.m.).
About the Exhibition
REBOOT is an exhibition of work produced by design students from the Faculty of Creative Industries at the University of Saint Joseph during the 2013–2014 academic year. It represents a reinvigoration of the USJ Design program, bringing it more closely in alignment with international academic standards while simultaneously making it more relevant to our specific location in Macau and East Asia as a whole. Adjacent to the manufacturing zones of South China and the Pearl River Delta (the “factory of the world”) Macau is ideally positioned to develop the intellectual and creative capital for radically new types of design. The work on display here comprises an attempt to rethink aspects of our everyday environment from first principles, and thereby trigger a subtle, ongoing revolution in the quality of life for the citizens of Macau. A catalog will be available. We hope to see you at the opening.

The Faculty of Creative Industries at the University of Saint Joseph is very pleased to invite you for the opening of the exhibition "MultipliCity" that will take place on Friday 23 May, 6:30 p.m., at
Creative Macau Gallery.
The exhibition "MultipliCity" is supported by the Macao Foundation, Creative Macau, and Macau Cultural Centre. It will be open from 23 May to 13 June, 2014(Monday-Saturday, 2-7 p.m.).
About the Exhibition
This exhibition showcases designs created by USJ architecture students during the 2013–14 academic year. A panoply of future visions for architecture and urbanism in Macau, the projects range in scale from small pavilions to large-scale urban plans. These are presented through drawings, computer renderings,
and scale models, The gallery also features a sculptural installation, designed and built by the students. As part of the exhibition, the students have created a large bamboo pavilion, which will be on display at Plaza Sai Van for the duration of the exhibition. All the work included here is a vibrant demonstration of the talent and commitment of the next generation of architects in Macau. A catalog will be available.

urbanism in Macau, the projects range in scale from small pavilions to large-scale urban plans. These are presented through drawings, computer renderings, and scale models, The gallery also features a sculptural installation, designed and built by the students. As part of the exhibition, the students have created a large bamboo pavilion, which will be on display at Plaza Sai Van for the duration of the exhibition. Public Lecture
The Spectacle of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo
By Prof. Paul Lee
Moderated by Prof. José Simões
Thursday, 22 May 2014, 6:30 p.m.
Speakers Hall, University of Saint Joseph
Organised by USJ Faculty of Creative Industries
Sponsored by Macao Foundation
Free Admission ‧ All are welcome
Refreshments will be offered after the talk
ABOUT THE TALK
This public lecture will examine the designs of national pavilions from the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. These pavilions can be considered as self-portraits of the countries participating at the World Expo. The architectural design of the pavilions becomes very important as each country tries to showcase its self-defined national identity and clamors for the attention of the millions of visitors. In their attempts to dazzle the public many of the pavilions become spectacles of contemporary design and technology. But at the same time these over-produced designs also turn into examples of excessive consumption and banality.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Paul Lee received his M.F.A.
from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills in Michigan, an A.B.
from Hamilton College in New York and an International Baccalaureate (IB) from the United World College of the Atlantic in Wales. His video and photography has been exhibited in group and solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Detroit, San Antonio and Vladivostok, Russia. In 2004 Paul Lee’s photographs were featured in the exhibition, “The Art of Tennessee” at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville.

Title: Bards, Angels and Books
Speaker: Prof. Vera Borges
Summary: In many traditions the character of the wandering poet arises, as an
outcast but paradoxically as an essential part of the social fabric as well. Poets speak like oracles, when inspired, or (only) as men speaking to other men; more radically, some think poets should speak in a plain language that even cats and dogs can read. Poetry has been understood as a sui generis part of literature, perhaps closer to music or even to theological revelation than to other literary genres. We propose to look at two books existing in
USJ Library as a metonymy for poetry - a Portuguese translation of Li Bai and an English version of the Galician-Portuguese troubadours, reflecting on the importance of books of poetry, these days, in particular for students of such an institution as USJ.
Venue: University of Saint Joseph.
Rua de Londres 16,
Library Room 2 (NAPE)
Title: Symbols and Literary Devices in Short Stories: Exploring Depth in Literary Reading
Speaker: Dr. Romulo Alegre
Summary: Symbols appear in literature and give out differentiated meanings according to their use in the literary texts. )Title: The Role of Imagination in History and Literature
Presenter: Dr. Ming Yeung Cheung
Abstract: The imagination doubtlessly plays an important role in fictional narratives and in art. Naturally, imagination has often been associated with the ‘unreal’. According to the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur (1913–2005), historians, working with a set of constraints different from that of novelists and poets, nevertheless rely on the imagination in their writing of history—making sense of the human experience in time. In order to convey a ‘real’ past
to readers, historians invent and use instruments that are no less creative than those of the artists. The same level of imagination
are required on the part the readers who want to understand the reality of the past.
