USJ FBL Promotes “One Country Two Systems”

Students of the Faculty of Business and Law learned about the innovative system of the legislative branch of the Macao SAR on a visit the Legislative Assembly of the Macao SAR.



In celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macao SAR and the successful implementation of the “Macao Basic Law”, the Faculty of Business and Law (FBL) from the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) visited the Legislative Assembly of the Macao Special Administrative Region to learn about the innovative system of the legislative branch of the Macao SAR on March 1st,2024.

The delegation led by Mr. Emil Marques consisted of students from Macao, Angola, Guinea Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, Philippines, and the Netherlands. This visit was an effort to provide an opportunity for the Business Administration students to understand the legislative process and the operations of the legislative branch of Macao SAR which is a unique and distinctive power given to the SAR government under the “One Country, Two System” model successfully implemented for the past 25 years.

The students were also given an in-depth tour of the legislative assembly chambers where legislative members voted on laws and carried out discussions with the executive branch representatives of the Macao SAR government. Mr. Lao, Head of Public Relations and Technical Support Office of the Legislative Assembly, explained the unique process for the election of the legislative members and the importance of understanding the level of autonomy given to the Macao SAR government in comparison to other municipalities.

The visit allowed both local and foreign students a deep understanding of the law-making process in Macao SAR and students are able to experience the actual work place of legislators.
