A delegation of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities conducted a third soundscape workshop entitled: “A Creative Approach to Visualising Noise” at the Media Arts programme, School of Architecture and Design of the King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) in Bangkok, Thailand.

On 7th March, a delegation of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), including Dean Prof. Carlos Sena Caires, Prof. Gerald Estadieu, and Prof. Sandra Olga Ng Ka Man, conducted a third soundscape workshop at the Media Arts programme, School of Architecture and Design of the King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) in Bangkok, Thailand. This Creative Workshop was entitled: “A Creative Approach to Visualising Noise.”.

The team discussed with students what is sound and a soundscape and introduced the concept of Spatial Audio (or immersive sound) as a way to record and listen to soundscape. They finally presented the research project entitled “AI-based Multimodal Qualitative Mapping of Macau Soundscape” and funded by the Macau Government’s Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT, Project Code 0026/2020/A1).

The workshop is a collaboration with Prof. Jung-Chul Hur, Prof. Martsamrit Pasupa, and Prof. Chakrapipat Assawaboonyalert at KMUTT and their class in “Creative Design. Speakers introduced their research work on Soundscape in Macao. The artistic experimentation based on sound and noise followed the discussion. As researchers and artists, they are investigating the relationship between field study and interactive installation art as a creative element to public awareness. The workshop concluded with hands-on practice for students to warm up, let their creativity by some smaller exercises and be triggered by unknown Soundscape. Students from year 1 of Bachelor of Fine Arts in Media Arts (Animation major, graphic design major and film and moving image major) created preliminary sketches to be further developed to art pieces that would later be exhibited in Macao.

The group is eager to investigate soundscape-based innovation through more partnerships and experimental workshops. The collaborative team met as a follow-up and interim evaluation of the earlier workshops to talk about and choose exceptional artworks for display and potential submissions for research papers.
