Living Shoreline ── Designing with Nature
Discover a new way to protect our coastlines — by designing with nature.
Join us at the Living Shorelines—Designing with Nature exhibition and explore how engineering and nature can work together to create healthier, more resilient coastlines.
A collaborative exhibition by the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), the University of Macau, the Hong Kong Metropolitan University, and AfterNature, with sponsorship from the Drop by Drop Project and support from the Macao Maritime Museum.
About the Exhibition:
When coastal development intensifies, it is often associated with habitat loss, biodiversity decline, and the degradation of natural ecosystems. At the same time, coastal environments face growing challenges from climate change, such as rising sea level, increasing storm intensity. Yet, coastal protection and ecological conservation do not have to be opposing goals!
This exhibition invites visitors to explore the concept of Living Shorelines, where engineering and nature work together to create healthier and more resilient coasts. Through interactive displays and real life examples, visitors will explore how living shorelines and seawalls can provide homes for marine life while protecting our coastlines. Visitors will learn about innovative solutions such as planting mangrove buffer zones, restoring oyster reefs, and installing specially designed habitat units that provide shelter for small intertidal animals. These nature-based solutions not only improve ecosystem resilience but also contribute to carbon sequestration.
Living shoreline projects have been successfully implemented around the world and are increasingly being adopted in Hong Kong, including ecological enhancement measures at seawalls and coastal infrastructure projects that promote marine biodiversity. By working with nature instead of against it, we can create shorelines that are safer, healthier, and more sustainable for both people and wildlife.
