The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) and the Portuguese-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCILC) signed a Cooperation Protocol on 18 July 2026 at the Chamber’s headquarters in Lisbon, Portugal. The agreement was signed by Professor Álvaro Barbosa, Vice-Rector for Internationalisation and Academic Affairs at USJ, and Mr. Bernardo Mendia, Secretary-General of CCILC.
The five-year protocol, provides a framework for cooperation in research, teaching and professional training, innovation and economic and social development, and cultural diplomacy. It will support joint traing programmes, research initiatives, commercial missions, entrepreneurship, and artistic and cultural activities, including public exhibitions and conferences.
During the meeting, USJ and CCILC considered the development in the short term of a joint workshop, “Global Vision: Developing Effective Entrepreneurial Strategies for International Projects between China and Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking Countries.” Further discussion on the workshop will take place with USJ’s Faculty of Business and Law.
The two institutions also discussed possible CCILC participation in the joint initiative of USJ and Casa Pia de Lisboa, which seeks to create opportunities for Casa Pia students to undertake studies in Macao. The scope of this collaboration also includes a temporary 2027 exhibition in Macao dedicated to Pedro Guedes, the Macao-born painter, Casa Pia alumnus, and a founder of the National Society of Fine Arts.
The agenda included possible assistance for prospective applicants to USJ scholarships for students from Portuguese-speaking countries who may experience difficulty covering living costs in Macao during undergraduate study.
The protocol establishes a basis for continued cooperation between USJ and CCILC, connecting academic, scientific, cultural, and business communities in Macao, Portugal, China, and other Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking countries.
