string(1519) "On 27 November , Prof. Vincent Yang of USJ was interviewed by the official China Radio International to comment on a Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China press conference and the ongoing “Operation Fox Hunt 2014” of China. At a special press conference on Nov. 26, the MFA urged foreign governments to help China to resolve the problem of corrupted fugitives hiding overseas. Since July, through “Operation Fox Hunt 2014”, Chinese law enforcement agencies have managed to bring back nearly 300 fugitives. It is widely believed that thousands more are still hiding overseas. On Nov. 9, the Beijing APEC conference adopted a joint declaration of cooperation in combating corruption. In November alone, China’s President Xi Jinping seven times urged foreign governments to send back the fugitives. Cooperation in this field is also required under the United Nations Convention against Corruption. Prof. Yang has worked with leading Chinese and international experts in research projects on implementation of the UNCAC. He has given expert opinions in high-profile fugitive cases in Canada, including the landmark case of China’s most notorious fugitive Lai Cheong Sing (賴昌星). Lai was sent back to China to stand for trial in 2012 after fighting a deportation order for 12 years in Canada.

Earlier this year, Rector Peter Stilwell visited Fu Jen Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan and met with President Vincent Han-Sun Chiang. On 27 Oct, 2014, accompanied by Prosecutor Liang Kuang-Tsung from the Justice Department responsible for international legal affairs, Pro-Rector Vincent Yang paid a visit to Prof. Shang-Shing P. Chou, Vice President for Academic Affairs in Fu Jen.
They discussed the possibilities of forming a closer cooperative relationship between USJ and Fu Jen in joint research and faculty-student exchange activities. Like USJ, Fu Jen is a well-established Catholic university. The university was originally created in Beijing. It is committed to a constructive dialogue leading to the integration of Chinese culture and Christian faith, the promotion of genuine knowledge and the development of advancement of humankind. USJ has had a history of exchange activities with Fu Jen for many years.

string(1432) "Macau is witnessing an important transition in the field of higher education. Since 2013, the Tertiary Education Services Office (Gabinete de Apoio ao Ensino Superior, GAES) of the MSAR government has been making good progresses in developing a system of higher education accreditation in Macau.
To enhance the quality of higher education in Macau, the Office has hosted a series of consultation conferences to discuss a set of guidelines for institutional accreditation and auditing as well as new program accreditation by well recognized external agencies. The guidelines are now being finalized by experienced experts from the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications after intensive consultation with representatives from higher education institutions in Macau. To support this unprecedented reform and make USJ an outstanding learning institution, the university has actively participated in the consultation process. Rector Fr. Stilwell, Pro-Rector Yang, Advisor Kong and other administrators attended the various GAES meetings and provided opinions to the Hong Kong team of experts. The following is a press release of GAES about a recent debriefing meeting to introduce a pilot project of new program accreditation that will be launched in 2015.

ABOUT THE EVENT
On November 26th 2014 at 6 - 10 pm, the Students’ Association cooperates with the Pearl River Delta Cultural and Creative Exchange Association, will be hosting a documentary event, where we will show two movies. This event is open to all.
The first film is called “No Impact Man” directed by Laura Gabbert / Justin Schein, they show how an environmentalist, Colin Beaven and his wife, Michelle’s fundamental lifestyle change. The Second documentary film is about an Earthquake in East Japan on 11th March 2011, countless of people lost their homes and their love ones. This is a consequential accident happened at the Fukushima Nuclear Reactor caused a great threat. Director IWAI SHUNJI, having all those meetings and conversations with his friends, he would hope to find the bet step towards Japan’s future.
謹訂於2014年11月25日黃昏六時正至晚上十時,假聖若瑟大學演講廳舉行CNEX主題紀錄片活動,此活動將會由三角文創主辨,聖若瑟大學學生會協辦,當日將會有兩部紀錄片公開放映,影後設有座談環節。
第一部紀錄片名叫熟男減碳日記,導演為Laura Gabbert / Justin Schein, 主要講述作家柯林·比萬自稱是一個環境保護論者。柯林·比萬的妻子對奢侈品崇拜,習慣喝烘焙咖啡,他們的 孩子也才開始蹣跚著學走路,這一家子怎麼看都離不開方便快捷的現代生活方式。不過柯林決定“遠離” 繁華的大都市,不要汽車等現代運輸工具、不用電、不用煤氣、不吃精加工食品,尤其是不使用網路, 就這樣生活一年。 雖然他們沒有搬走,但是柯林帶著這樣的一家子遠離了紐約曼哈頓第五大道上的 奢侈生活,開始了告別一切現代物質文明的“原始”生活。現在,這一家人仿佛生活在隔世的外星球。 這部電影以其獨特的視角和故事內容,成為 2009 年聖丹斯電影節、白銀紀錄片電影節以及洛杉磯電影 節的官方推薦影片,小成本影片依然能在北美上映。
第二部紀錄片名叫311 之後 , 導演為岩井俊二,由2011 年 3 月 11 日,東日本大地震奪去無數條人命、無數個家園。然而因人為因素而加劇的災情也令各 界議論紛紛,其中,核能安全問題更引發了全日本強大的輿論關注及頻繁的抗議行動浪潮。 外洩的輻射通過空氣、地層、和海流影響了整個日本,即使在災區重建、表面上回到軌道之後,在空 氣、食品中仍存在著許多肉眼看不見的危險。該如何重整目前對核能公司有利的經濟體系、如何讓媒 體擺脫財團控制、重拾正義良心,種種議題成了導演岩井俊二與他的朋友間積極探討的話題。 自 2011 年6月9日起,他與幾位朋友籌辦每月一次的「69 之會」反核餐會,邀請老朋友、新朋友參與 核能議題的討論;更以這部紀錄片號召日本知名演藝界人士與專家學者,探討為何在綠能科技發達的 日本,仍需仰賴危險的核能發電。出生於日本東北災區仙台市的他,帶領年輕一代反核運動份子回到 受海嘯與輻射重創的災區,片尾的一場樂團街頭演說更是振奮人心。

Model EU is an educational simulation in which participants recreate the political decision-making of a European Council Summit to learn about European politics and current issues. The 2014 Macao edition was held on November 22-23, and was co-founded by the European Union, along with the European Union Academic Programme in Macao, the Institute of European Studies in Macau, the Department of Government and Public Administration of the University of Macau, and the Youth Association of International Affairs. In teams of two, students played the role of the heads of state and government of the EU.
Kelly Kou Chi Ieng and Daniel Vendramini, two year-1 students in the Government Studies programme, volunteered to participate and were assigned to represent Sweden. Prior to the event, both read and researched on the EU current state of affairs to get prepared for the competition by building their background knowledge. The other participants were graduate students, exchange students and mainland students from the University of Macau, the Macau University of Science and Technology and the Macau Polytechnic Institute. The group was rather diverse and international in its outlook, but also driven by a highly competitive spirit, as our GS student reported. Over two days, they had to deliberate on two major current affairs: the Ukrainian crisis and the Ebola outbreak, after which the judges awarded Daniel Vendramini the title of "Best Delegate"! That will allow him to attend the EU conference, and a free trip to Europe, including flights, accommodation, meals and local transportation.
Congratulations to our two Government Studies freshmen, Kelly and Daniel, for having taken up the challenge of the competition and represented USJ with flying colours at the Model EU Macau 2014! And hip hip hurray to Daniel for his outstanding achievement!

string(1312) "On November 20, 2014 Rector Peter Stilwell hosted a round table meeting in Macau to welcome Prof. Liu Chuansheng, Chair of Beijing Normal University (BNU), and her delegation. BNU is one of the top research universities and the most prestigious normal university of China. President Xi Jinping of China paid a visit to BNU in September this year. The university has an Institute for Advanced Studies of Humanities and Religions which organizes the Nishang Forum on World Civilizations, a major international annual conference every year to promote dialogues amongst cultures and religions. The College of Criminal Justice of BNU is a member of the United Nations Network of Criminal Justice Institutes and is authorized by the UN to deliver training programs on combating corruption and terrorism. Other members of the BNU delegation were Prof. Zhang Fan, Vice President of BNU, Prof. Wang Xiumei, Director of International Cooperation Office and Dr. Chen, Program Director. Pro-Rector Prof. Vincent Yang, Prof. Kong Fanqing, Advisor to Rector, Prof. Arnold Monera, Dean of FRS, Prof. Jose Alves, Dean of FAL, Prof. Lucie Bernier, Dean of FH, attended the meeting. Representatives of the two universities agreed to form a cooperative relation for the exchange of expertise and resources in teaching and research."

"THE *MAKER MOVEMENT*: A CHANCE FOR MACAU!” which will be held at the
Macau Science Center’s Convention Center, on the 26th of November 2014, starting at 6 PM. The screening of the documentary “
MAKER: A Documentary on the Maker Movement” will follow the conference.
This conference is part of the wider
THIS IS MY CITY 2014 – The Creative Festival programme, an initiative of the
Cultural Association +853 with the institutional support of the
Macau’s Government Cultural Affairs Bureau.
The 'Maker Movement', sometimes called the 'Third Industrial Revolution,' subverts traditional manufacturing by building on innovative concepts such as open source, local manufacturing, crowd funding, and digital fabrication.
This conference will try to give an insight on this new transformative movement and its possible applications in Macau, having in mind the positive changes that it can bring on the educational and academic front, on the arts and design fields, on the business and economic life and the possible role that it can have as motor for the development of the
creative industries.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr. Roy Eric Xavier received his Doctorate and Master’s degrees in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley, where he is now the Director of the Portuguese and Macanese Studies Project, and a Visiting Scholar at the Institute for the Study of Societal Issues. Prior to Berkeley, he was an Associate Dean at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, and earlier the General Manager of KCRT Television and Media for 14 years in Richmond, California.
His recent publications include: "Death at the Races: The Portuguese Presence during the Happy Valley Fire of 1918", published in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society - Hong Kong, Vol. 53, March, 2014, and "The Macanese at War: Survival and Identity among Portuguese Eurasians during World War II", to be published in a collection by the University of Hong Kong in early 2015.
ABOUT THE TALK
The history of Macau and its people is also the history of Macanese culture as it developed during several migrations and resettlements across Asia that began from the middle of the 16th century. These migrations were the result of Portuguese expansion and trade, which at its height stretched from the Persian Gulf to the northern coast of Brazil. The settlement of racially mixed Portuguese in Goa, Macau, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and other ports along the trade routes also marked the locations where forms of a new “maritime” culture in Asia first appeared.
Beginning in 1557 the emergence of Macau provided neutral ground for Europeans and merchants from Asia to exchange goods, and a tolerant environment where Portuguese Eurasians could settle in relative peace. During the next three hundred years, various elements of “Macanese” culture and identity solidified, including a creole language, religious devotion adapted to the conditions, an expressive literature, and culinary arts. Some components were encouraged by the Church, while others were influenced by the continual mix of people who traveled in and out of Macau as trade with Europe developed.
At a macro level, Macanese culture and identity first took root in the lore of Portuguese explorers, including Henry the Navigator, Vasco de Gama and Jorge Alvares, whose discoveries of sea routes to Africa, India, Asia, and South America allowed the Portuguese to by-pass the old “silk road” that linked Europe and Asia from the time of the Crusades. These explorations were driven in large part by the need of the Portuguese monarchy to be less dependent on Spain in the 15th and 16th centuries, a period of political and social upheaval in Europe which we now identify as the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.
To secure their early advantage, the Portuguese sought to incorporate, rather than conquer, indigenous peoples into a colonial strategy that was later adopted by other European rivals. When the number of Portuguese in Asia began to dwindle after 1600, this same policy led to the recruitment of mestizos in Macau and other trading ports as soldiers, artillery gunners, navigators, linguists, advisors, and mid-level bureaucrats. Many in Macau served as intermediaries to the Chinese Empire, Portugal’s principal trading partner in the 17th century, and played key roles in the creation of European trade and the beginnings of global commerce.
Thus, the emergence of Macau as the cultural home to Portuguese Eurasians contributed to socio-economic developments that had direct consequences in Europe, the Americas, and rest of the western world. A closer look at Macanese migrations and the relation to culture and identity through case studies allows us to illustrate how this important variant of cultural development occurred over the last five centuries.

string(1624) "This year’s productions include Photography, Graphic Design, Interactive Media, Animation, Video Production and Radio Recording.
The myriad of media formats presented in this event reflects the multidisciplinary approach followed in the Communication and Media Bachelor program, which was reinforced upon its inclusion in the Faculty of Creative Industries.
According to USJ organizer and program coordinator, professor José Manuel Simões, “this exhibition demonstrates the technical and practical topics covered by the BCM program, ranging from audiovisual production to digital publishing techniques, reflecting upon the entire range of modern platforms. The main focus of our program is on how people use messages to generate meanings placing our students at the forefront of contemporary information society. Like we can see at the exhibition, we prepare students with a solid foundation in learning, exploring existence, as well as the function of using different fields and gaining expertise in advanced tools”.
The exhibition is open until 29 November and can be visited everyday, except Sundays, from 2:00pm to 7:00pm. Admission is free for all visitors.
The venue – Creative Macau – is located at Macau Cultural Centre building, at NAPE. Refreshments will be served during the opening session, scheduled for 12 November 2014 at 6:30pm.

自16世紀中葉始,澳門成為了世界貿易中的一個特殊驛站,翻開了它作為世界文化交流史的傳奇歷史。小小的澳門半島形似蓮花,僅一條形似“蓮花莖”的沙堤與大陸相連。如今,隨著澳門新填海區的逐漸擴大,澳門這座寧靜的南中國濱海小城又搖身成為了“世界休閒旅遊中心”,成了一座充滿喧鬧的人工浮島。越來越多來自世界不同地域的人在此彙聚,“過客”與“原鄉”混雜在一起。商業和娛樂就是當代澳門這座“蓮島”浮世萬象創造的重要動力。
Macao has become a particular post of the world trade and opened a legendary chapter as part of the cultural exchange history of the world since the middle of 16th century. In a shape of lotus, the tiny Macau peninsula is linked with the mainland China through a “lotus stem” of dike. Now, with the gradual expansion of the newly reclaimed area, this quiet coastal city of Macao in southern ...China, has suddenly become the "World Leisure Tourism Center", and a bustling artificial floating island. More and more people from different regions of the world gathered here, "passing travelers" mixing together with "natives".
插畫是一種講求敘述性的平面視覺藝術表現形式。作為一種更為自由的當代藝術形式,當代插畫的創作者不僅在敘述個人的觀點,更多的是在敘述一種精神。
Illustration, as an art emphasis on narrative, is also a more liberal form of contemporary art, the graphic art of illustrations finds the artists not only relating a personal point of view, but more importantly, describing a kind of spirit.
此次插畫大賽,旨在通過徵集澳門具有原創性的當代插畫作品,去發掘屬於澳門這座“蓮島”的現世故事,將有關於這座城市的故事真正留存下來,通過插畫作品將個體記憶轉化成為留存城市記憶的一種獨特形式。於此同時,舉辦澳門首屆當代插畫旨在有責任為年輕人創建一個良好的文化交流平臺,以更有力的推動澳門藝術設計走向更廣闊的市場,從中發掘有潛力的青年插畫師,使年輕學子在求學成長階段以至職業生涯開始,得到社會外界的更多關注;同時亦讓世界瞭解澳門的插畫現況,並為澳門積蓄藝術設計人才資源,配合澳門文創產業之長遠發展。
The Illustrations Competition aims at exploring secular stories of this "lotus island" and retaining the true story of the city by collecting original contemporary illustrations of Macao, thus the individual memory can be transformed into a unique form of retained memories of the city. Meanwhile, as the first contest of its kind here, it is responsible to create a good cultural exchange platform for young people, vigorously promoting the Macao Art and Design to a broader market, tapping the potential of the young illustrators that on the one hand they may gain much more attention from the outside at the beginning stage of their careers or even when they are at school, and on the other the status of Macao illustrations could be better known by the world, and accumulating human resources of art design to meet the long-term development of cultural and creative industries in Macao.

On the 22nd and 23rd of October, the University of Saint Joseph organises an international conference on Lusophony entitled "Between Demystification and Utopia: an Inquiry into Lusophonia". This conference invites people to rethink lusophonia as a political, social and cultural phenomenon with a particular emphasis on Macau. The conference will open with a session on "Camões and the echoes of his work in contemporary culture" as one of the first literary instances of mythologizing and simultaneously criticizing the Portuguese expansion. In the ensuing debates relatively similar concepts such as Lusophony, Francophony, Sinophony will be examined; the adequacy and operability of the concepts, functioning in post-colonial contexts, will be studied as well as the effectiveness of language policies; myths, ideologies and images in literature will also be discussed. The conference concludes with testimonies about Lusophony in Macau. The event will take place at USJ’s Speakers Hall, Nape 1 Campus.

Os trabalhos abrirão com uma conferência sobre “Camões e os ecos das suas obras na cultura contemporânea”, como uma das primeiras instâncias de mitificação e simultaneamente crítica da expansão. No debate promovido pela USJ equacionar-se-ão conceitos relativamente afins como a lusofonia, francofonia, sinofonia; considerar-se-á a adequação e operacionalidade dos conceitos, o seu funcionamento em contextos pós-coloniais, ajuizar-se-á da eficácia das políticas da língua; serão também sondados mitos, ideologias e imagens na vertente literária. A conferência encerra com testemunhos sobre a lusofonia em Macau. Os trabalhos terão lugar no auditório (Speakers Hall) da USJ, no campus do Nape 1.

ABOUT THE TALK
In association with the exhibition currently on show at Ponte 9 (“Design and Disaster: Kon Wajiro’s Modernologio”) this lecture will focus on a group of Japanese artists and architects known as The Street Observation Society. Formed in 1986 by architectural historian Terunobu Fujimori and avant-garde artist Genpei Akasegawa, together with a fluctuating group of friends and collaborators, the Street Observation Society continues to search Japan’s city streets for moments of beauty and interest in everyday places and objects. This lecture will trace the development of the Street Observation Society, and contextualize it within a longer and broader lineage of fieldwork on the Japanese city.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Thomas Daniell is Head of the Department of Architecture and Design at the University of Saint Joseph. He holds a B.Arch from Victoria University of Wellington, an M.Eng from Kyoto University, and a Ph.D from RMIT University. Widely published, he is a correspondent and editorial consultant for the journals
Mark, Volume, and
Interstices, and was previously on the editorial board of the
Architectural Institute of Japan Journal. His books include

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Felipe M. De Leon, Jr. is Chairman and Commissioner for the Arts of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Chairman of its Committee on Intangible Heritage. He is Professor of Art Studies at the University of the Philippines where he taught humanities, aesthetics, music theory, and Philippine art and culture. Mr. De Leon was Commissioner for the Philippines of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) from 1999 to 2002, and Chairman of the UNESCO Committee on Culture in 2002. He has written numerous articles on cultural issues, especially on cultural creativity and diversity, worldviews and values, and culture and development. He was the main author of the ASEAN Declaration for Cultural Heritage.
ABOUT THE TALK
If culture is essentially the way we perceive the world, the values arising from this perception, and the way we express these values as well as the skills they necessitate, then we may encounter at least five different cultures in any society. Two of these cultures ultimately arise from a deeply ingrained sense of alienation, insecurity and fear. One is the culture of power, which is focused on the accumulation, exercise and control of power. The other is the culture of wealth, which is preoccupied with the acquisition of material wealth, possessions and the trappings of comfort and privilege. Two other cultures are trust-based, one is the culture of communal sharing, which is devoted to the search for wisdom, self-control, strength of character, creativity, loving kindness and togetherness. A fourth one is the culture of simple needs, where people are mainly concerned with satisfying basic needs and leading a practical, everyday life.
But through time a society constructs a unifying vision of life, which includes an object of devotion and a map of reality. From this arises a fifth culture which is the core culture of any society, this is the culture of ethnicity (or culture a creative social construct). Ethnicity is the unique totality of the world view and values, core principles and ideas, beliefs systems, knowledge, skills and practices, shared by a society - what we call its cultural identity (or ethnicity) of a people.
The ethnicity of a people may be closer to one or the other of the four above-mentioned cultural constants of any society, those concerned with power, wealth, communal sharing, and simple needs. Filipino ethnicity is essentially one with the culture of communal sharing. In general, Filipinos value relationships and family more than power and wealth. The philosophical basis of this valuing is the concept of kapwa, which means “the other person is also yourself”. The core of Filipino psychology, a sense of kapwa is humaneness at the highest level. In principle, it excludes any action that may be detrimental or harmful to other human beings. It is definitely inconsistent with exploitative human transactions. It implies a unique moral obligation to treat one another as equal fellow human beings. In essence, it is a non-confrontational, mystical, highly spiritual belief in the interconnected of all things that could be the basis of strong social cooperation, harmony, and well-being that is the fundamental basis of a nation’s progress.
The disruptive forces and self-serving interests of the elites addicted to the cultures of power and wealth, however, have always prevented any real social progress from being achieved. This is the legacy of Spanish and American colonial rule. The colonial powers had effectively created a powerful few with whom they could easily collaborate to plunder and control the Philippines’ natural and human resources. At present, studies have shown that just forty families control 76 percent of the nation’s wealth. The Philippines is said to have a soft state because of self-serving elite intervention and manipulation. As a result, the culture of the bureaucracy is more attuned to the needs and values of the elite than to that of the vast majority of Filipinos.
A large-scale transformation of values inculcating the philosophy of kapwa has to be instituted through the educational system and the media. This may conscienticize the elite to make them agree to measures for a more equitable distribution of wealth and sharing of power and move away from oligarchy. In the long term, improving the educational system can strengthen the middle class and pave the way for a more democratic society. Passing legislative measures so that the economic elite will bear the greater burden of taxation and reduce their monopoly on wealth may also place Philippine developmental goals on a firmer footing.

In addition, one historical story relating to USJ is very interesting to the local Koreans which is as follows:
"St. Andrew Kim Taegon (김대건 안드레아) was the first Korean Catholic priest and is the patron saint of Korea. In 1836, he was baptized and studied in the Macau seminary which is the ancestor institution of the University of Saint Joseph.
