The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) recently hosted a public lecture as part of  The Script Road – 13th Macau Literary Festival, which celebrates literature, history, and cultural exchange. The event, titled “The Peking Express – The True Story of China’s Great Robbery of 1923”, took place on Monday, 11th March, at the Don Bosco Auditorium on the USJ Ilha Verde Campus. It attracted a diverse audience, including students and members of the English Center and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, who eagerly explored into the narrative of this remarkable historical event. Attendees had the opportunity to meet and greet Zimmerman, adding a personal touch to the event. This session allowed participants to engage with the author, ask questions, and gain further insights into the captivating true story of the Peking Express.

“The Peking Express” transported attendees back to China’s republican era, immersing them in a tale of train-robbing revolutionaries and unsuspecting passengers embroiled in an adrenaline-pumping adventure. Reminiscent of the classic mystery novel “Murder on the Orient Express,” the story unfolded against the backdrop of a train journey that promised luxury and enchantment but ultimately became a clash of political ideologies.

The lecture was delivered by the author himself, James M. Zimmerman, who is a Beijing-based author and lawyer with over twenty-five years of experience in China. Zimmerman’s extensive knowledge of Chinese law and his representation of companies and individuals navigating the complexities of doing business in Mainland China, and his background as a former four-term chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China, Zimmerman added a unique perspective to the event.
