About the Talk
The Pearl River Delta (PRD) has been experiencing stunning economic development and population explosion in the recent 3 decades, which unfortunately have compromised the environment. As a result, environmental contamination has become a serious concern. Among various contaminants, endocrine disrupting contaminants (EDCs) have attracted increasing attention due to their interference to the endocrine systems of animals, especially reproductive system, causing developmental retardation, reduced reproductivity, hermaphroditism, etc.
In addition to hormonal compounds, bisphenol A (BPA), triclosan (TCS), triclocarbon (TCC), and parabens have also been proved to be EDCs. They are ubiquitous in the aquatic environment of the PRD, up to 27175 ng/L (BPA) in Dongjiang River water. Municipal wastewater is the predominant source of the EDCs in the Pearl River due to incomplete elimination. The highest levels of the EDCs were observed in urban sections of the river. The EDCs showed obviously seasonal variations in the river. Precipitation plays an important role in the seasonal distribution of the EDCs in the Pearl River. Unlike hormonal chemicals, TCC, TCS, and BPA can accumulate and persist in sediment. Sedimentary records showed that concentrations of the EDCs have been increasing in the recent decades. The wide presence and high levels of the EDCs in the aquatic environment of the PRD may pose threat to the health of the wild aquatic animals and the ecological system.
About the Speaker
Dr Xianzhi Peng is a Professor of the State Key Laboratory of Organic Geochemistry, Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences. She received her Ph.D degree in Geochemistry in 2000 from Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Her current research interests focus on (1) Emerging pollutants, e.g., pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and endocrine disrupting contaminants (EDCs) in the environment, especially in the Pearl River Delta and the Estuary, (2) Development and application of stable isotopic fingerprinting and chiral fingerprinting in environmental pollution research, and (3) Bioaccumulation, biomagnification, and ecological potential of the emerging pollutants in the environment. Dr. Peng has published about 40 papers, most correlated with PPCPs and EDCs in the environment of the PRD and PRE.

Agreement for Cooperation and Memorandum for Student Exchange with Chiba Institute of Technology, Japan on 11 May 2015. This agreement for cooperation lays the groundwork for future collaboration between the two institutions and strengthens the international standing of Macau’s Higher Education.
A delegation from Chiba Institute of Techonology, the oldest private technical university in Japan, visited USJ in the morning of 11 May 2015. The delegation from Japan, headed by the President of Chiba Institute of Technology,
Prof. Kazuhito Komiya, was warmly welcomed by USJ’s Rector,
Prof. Peter Stilwell, USJ’s Dean of the Faculty of Creative Industry,
Prof. Álvaro Barbosa, and Head of the Department of Architecture and Design,
Prof. Thomas Daniell. The signing ceremony was held at USJ’s main campus in NAPE area after representatives from both parties gave a brief presentation of their respective institutions. President Komiya expressed that he was looking forward to receiving USJ’s students for exchange programmes in Japan, and to sending Japanese students to Macau to enhance both academic and cultural exchange.
The agreement between USJ and Chiba Institute of Technology allows for exploration of diverse models of cooperation, and encourages students and staff to undertake study visits and cultural exchange. This is in line with the current Higher Education strategy of Macau to develop the international standing of Macau’s higher education institutions.

About the Talk
Through practical examples and illustrated case studies, this talk will address how architecture and design have been employed as agents of social and political change, and as catalysts for spatial and urban transformations in cities across the world. From employing design to negotiate new social contracts in the work of Stalker and Stealth, to Teddy Cruz’s design of new political and economic processes, to designing new protocols for citizen interaction with public institutions by DESIS and Cohabitation Strategies, and to designing new models of urban pedagogy by the Center for Urban Pedagogy and Hester Street Collaborative, the talk will present a compendium of the emerging and innovative models of design-driven urban practice. This work offers important new insights because it moves beyond more conventional urban interventions manifested by the design of physical objects and public amenities, to the design of new protocols, processes, infrastructures and capabilities for radically rethinking the workings of democracy “on the ground.”
About the Speaker
Miodrag Mitrasinovic is an architect, urbanist, and author. He is an Associate Professor of Urbanism and Architecture at Parsons School of Design, The New School in New York. Miodrag’s work focuses on both generative capacity and infrastructural dimensions of public space, specifically at the intersections of public policy, urban and public design, and processes of privatization of public resources. He is the author of T
otal Landscape, Theme Parks, Public Space (Ashgate, 2006), co-editor of
Travel, Space, Architecture (Ashgate, 2009) and editor of
Concurrent Urbanities: Designing Infrastructures of Inclusion (Routledge, forthcoming 2015). The first two of his books received Graham Foundation Grants in 2004 and 2006 respectively. His professional and scholarly work has been published internationally."

ABOUT THE TALK
This talk is about Zhang Baozai 張保仔, the most famous, or notorious, pirate of Macau and Hong Kong. Everyone seems to know some story or another about him and his exploits. For some he is a great hero; for others he is a great scoundrel. But for all that has been written and said about him, in fact, we know very little about Zhang Baozai. The speaker propose to examine how the pirate was culturally constructed as a hero, and perhaps also as a deity through examining examine legends and stories collected from Macau, Hong Kong, and the Pearl River Delta – as well as historic facts – about his life and deeds.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Robert Antony安樂博, who earned his PhD at the University of Hawaii, is research professor in the Department of History at the University of Macau. His research focuses on the social, legal, and cultural history of South China in the early modern period. His publications include Like Froth Floating on the Sea (2003), Pirates in the Age of Sail (2008), and 《海上风云:南中国海的海盗及其不法活动》(2013). He is currently completing a book on Crime, State, and Community in Late Imperial South China, to be published in 2016 with Hong Kong University Press."

Prof. João Cordeiro, form the Faculties of Creative Industries, went to Copenhagen on 8 April to present his latest research/artistic project at EvoMUSART, a conference on Evolutionary and Biology Computation in Music and Art.
His project, called FuXI, a Fish-Driven Instrument for Real-time Music Performance, allows the users to perform electroacoustic music and live visuals utilising the behaviour of a live fish inside an aquarium as a trigger for sounds and images. This project was developed in collaboration with the Institute of Science and Environment in USJ, which has developed extensive work on fish behaviour.
Prof. Cordeiro will be performing live with this instrument on 17 April 2015, in the Macau Art Museum, as part of the cultural program of a symposium on Creative Industries organised by the Faculty of Creative Industries (

Communication and Media Students from University of Saint Joseph's Faculty of Creative Industries will be exhibiting their work at the Galery Fra Angelico, Saint Paul School, from April 13 to May 8, visiting time 9 am to 6 pm.
This exhibition includes Photography, Graphic Design, Animation, Video Production and Radio Production.
The myriad of media formats presented in this event reflects the multidisciplinary approach followed in the Communication and Media Bachelor program, which was reinforced upon its inclusion in the Faculty of Creative Industries.
According to USJ organizer and program coordinator, professor José Manuel Simões, “this exhibition demonstrates the technical and practical topics covered by the BCM program, ranging from audiovisual production to digital publishing techniques, reflecting upon the entire range of modern platforms. The main focus of our program is on how people use messages to generate meanings placing our students at the forefront of contemporary information society. Like we can observe at the exhibition, we prepare students with a solid foundation in learning, exploring existence, as well as the function of using different fields and gaining expertise in advanced tools. Our program is taught by Professors with excellent international reputation that will give the students the opportunity to develop their creative potential in an international and interdisciplinary environment. The students produce a variety of digital media artefacts and develop tools for reflection upon their professional creative identity. Above all this bachelor combines both supportive scholars, multicultural environment, an enduring sense of community, and a state-of-the-art ability development in order to build up a personal sense of academic identity which is life-long standing”.
The exhibition is open until May 8 and can be visited everyday, except Sundays, from 9 am to 6 pm. Admission is free for all visitors.
The venue – Galery Fra Angelico, Saint Paul School – located at Rampa dos Cavaleiros, n.12/14. Information – 28519364.
Refreshments will be served during the opening session, scheduled for April 13th at 10.30 am.
