ABOUT THE TALK
This talk is about Zhang Baozai 張保仔, the most famous, or notorious, pirate of Macau and Hong Kong. Everyone seems to know some story or another about him and his exploits. For some he is a great hero; for others he is a great scoundrel. But for all that has been written and said about him, in fact, we know very little about Zhang Baozai. The speaker propose to examine how the pirate was culturally constructed as a hero, and perhaps also as a deity through examining examine legends and stories collected from Macau, Hong Kong, and the Pearl River Delta – as well as historic facts – about his life and deeds.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Robert Antony安樂博, who earned his PhD at the University of Hawaii, is research professor in the Department of History at the University of Macau. His research focuses on the social, legal, and cultural history of South China in the early modern period. Prof. João Cordeiro, form the Faculties of Creative Industries, went to Copenhagen on 8 April to present his latest research/artistic project at EvoMUSART, a conference on Evolutionary and Biology Computation in Music and Art.
His project, called FuXI, a Fish-Driven Instrument for Real-time Music Performance, allows the users to perform electroacoustic music and live visuals utilising the behaviour of a live fish inside an aquarium as a trigger for sounds and images. This project was developed in collaboration with the Institute of Science and Environment in USJ, which has developed extensive work on fish behaviour.
Prof. Cordeiro will be performing live with this instrument on 17 April 2015, in the Macau Art Museum, as part of the cultural program of a symposium on Creative Industries organised by the Faculty of Creative Industries (

Communication and Media Students from University of Saint Joseph's Faculty of Creative Industries will be exhibiting their work at the Galery Fra Angelico, Saint Paul School, from April 13 to May 8, visiting time 9 am to 6 pm.
This exhibition includes Photography, Graphic Design, Animation, Video Production and Radio Production.
The myriad of media formats presented in this event reflects the multidisciplinary approach followed in the Communication and Media Bachelor program, which was reinforced upon its inclusion in the Faculty of Creative Industries.
According to USJ organizer and program coordinator, professor José Manuel Simões, “this exhibition demonstrates the technical and practical topics covered by the BCM program, ranging from audiovisual production to digital publishing techniques, reflecting upon the entire range of modern platforms. The main focus of our program is on how people use messages to generate meanings placing our students at the forefront of contemporary information society. Like we can observe at the exhibition, we prepare students with a solid foundation in learning, exploring existence, as well as the function of using different fields and gaining expertise in advanced tools. Our program is taught by Professors with excellent international reputation that will give the students the opportunity to develop their creative potential in an international and interdisciplinary environment. The students produce a variety of digital media artefacts and develop tools for reflection upon their professional creative identity. Above all this bachelor combines both supportive scholars, multicultural environment, an enduring sense of community, and a state-of-the-art ability development in order to build up a personal sense of academic identity which is life-long standing”.
The exhibition is open until May 8 and can be visited everyday, except Sundays, from 9 am to 6 pm. Admission is free for all visitors.
The venue – Galery Fra Angelico, Saint Paul School – located at Rampa dos Cavaleiros, n.12/14. Information – 28519364.
Refreshments will be served during the opening session, scheduled for April 13th at 10.30 am.

ABOUT THE TALK
With advances in algorithms for sound synthesis and processing, combined with inexpensive computational hardware and sensors, we can now easily build new types of musical instruments, and other real-time interactive expressive devices. This talk will look at a variety of new devices, projects, and ensembles created over the last decade, with a particular emphasis on extending techniques inspired by Asian music. From India, Korea, Indonesia, and beyond, the creation of new musical interfaces and robots will be presented. The birth of the KarmetiK Machine Orchestra evolved from these inventions, and video of compositions and experimental productions will be presented.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Ajay Kapur is currently the Director of the Music Technology program (MTIID) at the California Institute of the Arts, as well as the Associate Dean for Research and Development in Digital Arts. He also runs a PhD Research Group in Wellington New Zealand called Sonic Engineering Lab for Creative Technology. He received an Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in 2007 from University of Victoria combining computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, music and psychology with a focus on intelligent music systems and media technology. Kapur has published over 100 technical papers and presented
lecturesacross the world on music technology, human computer interface for artists, robotics for making sound, and modern digital orchestras. His latest book "Introduction to Programming for Musicians and Digital Artists" is a textbook for artists to learn computer science."

string(1289) "The Tertiary Education Services Office (GAES) of the Macau Government recently held the 2015 Meeting of Leaders of Macau Higher Education Institutions to discuss topics that are strategically important to the development of higher education. At this meeting, aside from delivering an update on the progress in creating Macau’s first accreditation system for higher education, GAES introduced the practices of implementing anti-harassment policies in Hong Kong and Taiwan as references for Macau’s preparation of policies on sexual harassment.
Rector Fr. Peter Stilwell and Pro-Rector Vincent Yang of USJ attended this meeting and introduced the USJ’s Anti-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment Policy and Procedures. At this meeting, representatives of all the universities and colleges agreed on the need of having a sexual harassment policy. Several representatives also supported USJ’s suggestion that such a policy should go beyond sexual harassment and address all types of discrimination and harassment in the light of the Basic Law principle of equality and international standards.

The university is honoured to be invited to the student workshop "Meet The Artist | Joana Vasconcelos Workshop" last March 16, 2015 at Grande Praça MGM Macau. A group of professors and selected students from the Faculty of Creative Industries had the chance to meet the well-known Portuguese artist, who has been invited by MGM to design and install artworks at their main lobby.
Joana Vasconcelos is one of the preeminent artists of the younger generations. Her new installation created for MGM is comprised of solely new works and is the artist's first solo exhibition in China. Vasconcelos has created the most ambitious piece to date of her iconic Valkyries series, which draws on the marine and maritime, and connects with the Portuguese heritage of Macau, embracing the vitality of Portuguese art and culture from a new perspective.
Below is a testimonial from Andrea Medina, our Year 4 Communication and Media student.
"Renowed Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos has yet created another piece to add to the “Valkyrie” series at Grande Praça, a giant octopus that branches from the marine aquarium and connects organically with the three large-scale floor main lobby of MGM Macau. The chance was given to a group of the Faculty of Creative Industries USJ students to attend a workshop with Joana and get some insights on the background story on the octopus’ origin and introduction to her previous works. Inspiring, daring, feminine and true are just a few words to describe Joana’s works and the personality behind each art piece. The simple fact of admiring the octopus and its many perspectives can summarize the highlight of a day.Furthermore, the artist presented us with the Jóia do Tejo, the Carmen Miranda, the Coração independente vermelho among some of her most recognized works praising the female figure and her values towards society. However, the golden advice to young prospective students and artists has more weight than the actual octopus, that is: “Never give up, if you really want something you will be able to accomplish it”.An artist not born but made reaching out to all of us, just like the octopus."

th place at the 2015 GAES Basketball Competition. The competition started on 28 February and finally came to an end last weekend. The closing ceremony was full of fun, as the venue was filled with the strong spirit of teamwork. Our participants have developed a lot throughout the competition and training. Both the male and female teams were praised by the other teams for their vast development.
The team did their best in the competition, but have lost against MUST with a score of 52:62. Nevertheless, they have learned and progressed a lot, and have won the 4th place. We would like to acknowledge the support and guidance from their coach Andrew Wong, the dancing club as cheering team, as well as the countless support from the USJ colleagues and students.
The team will be participating in the upcoming ADUM Basketball Competition on April 11. Let’s wish them the best of luck!

Together with Ms. Xu were Deputy Director-General Pu Hailong, Director Hong Bo, and Deputy Directors Guo Jianbin and Wang Lujiao.
Ms. Xu’s delegation was warmly welcomed by Rector Fr. Stilwell, Vice-Rector Maria Espadinha, Pro-Rector Vincent Yang, Administrator Susana Mieiro, Registrar Ricardo Rato, Director of Student Affairs Teresa Loong and Head of Public Relations Office Jenny Lao-Phillips. Rector Stilwell thanked the Liaison Office’s support to USJ and accompanied the guests to visit USJ’s teaching facilities at the Seminary.
The Procurator of the Seminary, Fr. Jojo Peter Ancheril, introduced the Seminary, a heritage of hundreds of years of history, and its collection of cultural relics. As the first Western style institution of higher education in the Far East, St. Paul’s College was founded in the St. Paul’s Cathedral that was originally created in 1580. This was a milestone marking the beginning of the cultural and educational exchanges between China and the West. The Cathedral was destroyed by fire in 1595 and 1601. The Jesuits missionaries built the Saint Joseph’s Seminary after. Today, the Seminary stands as a rare Western-style ancient monument that has survived from all those years of difficulties in Macau. Many valuable artifacts from the early history of the Catholics entering in China are kept here. According to Rector Stilwell, after Matteo Ricci came to Macau in 1582, he studied Chinese language and culture in the Saint Joseph Seminary before heading north into the mainland. Ricci eventually arrived in Beijing 18 years later, where he was well received and honored by the Ming Dynasty Emperor Wanli for his outstanding contribution to the exchanges of cultures and technologies between China and the West.
The delegation of Xu Ting subsequently proceeded to visit the site of USJ’s new campus at Ilha Verde. The design of the new campus is a product of an internationally renowned architectural design firm which reflects the concept of green campus. The construction project is undertaken by Hsin Chong Group, a company that managed the projects to build Venetian Macao, Sands Macau Casino and the City of Sands. According to Rector Stilwell, the construction project is progressing well and the hope is to complete it within this year. Then, USJ, as a successor of 400 years of history and a university with international features, will have a brand-new look to contribute to the development of higher education and the nurturing of high quality talents for Macau."

ABOUT THE TALK
In the panorama of the Portuguese poetry of the XX century, Cinatti stands out for his innovative diction and his very human record of an existential journey in search of a transcendent, for him incarnate in Christ. In his experience of the Portuguese Colonies, which he knew well as an anthropologist, botanist and, forest engineer, he distinguish himself by his identification with Timor and the East Timorese, long before the politically correct assertions of postcolonial studies. He also had family connections to Macau.

About the Seminar
The main aim of this workshop is to identify the key processes of the research process that together prompt a successful research programm. The essentials of each of these processes will be highlighted and students will be challenged to identify their strong points and weaknesses at each level so that they became more aware of how to further develop their research skills. The teaching methods include oral presentations of concepts and ideas followed by in class practical exercises.
The seminar is primarily aimed at candidates of the USJ doctoral programme. However, students from other levels and academic staff interested in developing their research skills are also welcome to participate. The seminar is free but seats are limited to 20. Sessions are relatively independent and participation in 1, 2 or the 3 sessions is possible, depending on seat availability. Please confirm which sessions you would like to attend by sending an email to

ABOUT THE TALK
This talk addresses two basic aspects of social cognition, cognitive appraisal of social information and social learning, using the zebrafish as a model of a social teleost fish. This approach will help to develop a neurobehavioral comparative framework to search for common elementary modules of social cognition within vertebrates, and it will also further support the use of zebrafish as a vertebrate model organism for translational research in social and affective neuroscience.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Professor Rui Oliveira has a Ph.D. in Biology (1996, University of Lisbon) and is currently Rector and Full Professor of PsychoBiology at ISPA – Instituto Universitário, Portugal. He is also the Director of the Post‐Graduate Program in Psychobiology at ISPA-IU and Principal Investigator of the Integrative BehaviouralBiology Lab at the Champalimaud Neuroscience Program, Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, Portugal.
