ABOUT THE TALK
Mangrove wetlands, one of the three coastal wetland ecosystems in the intertidal zone in tropical and subtropical regions, have important ecological and socioeconomic values. They are vital for healthy coastal ecosystems, and also provide prime nesting and migratory sites for birds and wildlife. In Hong Kong and South China, the contamination of toxic chemicals is a major threat to mangrove wetlands due to rapid urbanization and industrialization. Moderate to high concentrations of toxic contaminants have been detected in mangrove sediments. Mangrove plants also accumulate toxic contaminants, particularly in root tissues. The lecture will give details on the conservation of mangrove wetlands, the contamination problem and the tolerance of mangrove plants to toxic contaminants.

ABOUT THE TALK
This public lecture includes visuals and live piano performance built around Godowsky's Java Suite, an original work based on the composer's tour of Indonesia. Godowsky had important ideas about music that grew from his love of different cultures, people, and countries. Petersson, a world-class musician from Sweden, studied the life and works of Leopold Godowsky as part of his doctoral program at the Music Academy in Kraków, Poland, and has recorded a solo CD of Godowsky's "Java Suite." He presented similar seminars for college students in Europe.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Born in 1981 in Lund, Sweden, the internationally known pianist, Carl Petersson has gained a reputation for not being afraid of new and unknown repertory by composers such as Friedrich von Flotow, Helge Evju and Lars Bisgaard. Carl’s concert programs often include lesser well known composers such as Alkan, Godowsky and Albeniz, combining them with the likes of Bach, Mozart and Chopin. Carl has performed as a soloist as well as with orchestras on numerous occasions in Canada, USA, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, France, The Czech Republic, Germany, Israel and is now touring in China. His recordings released on the Sterling label have been widely acclaimed by international critics (e.g. The Gramophone, Klassikmagazin, Klassieke Zaken and Classical Lost and Found).
Carl is a prize-winner of numerous competitions and currently a very dedicated piano teacher at the Wroclaw (Breslau) Academy of Music, Poland. Being very active as a pedagogue, Carl has given Master Classes in Sweden, Canada and the U.S.

About the Talk
Creativity is probably the hottest keyword in education in Asia in the past decade; various creative education programmes, both domain-specific and domain-general, abound. Indeed, creativity has almost become an institution against the “traditional education model” (strawman or otherwise). In this lecture, I shall share with the audience one exceedingly simple yet most effective way of fostering student creativity: by means of a blank sheet of paper.

ABOUT THE TALK
In the beginning of the 21st century, the Portuguese Ministry of Education launched “Programa Mais Sucesso Escolar”, with the objective of preventing school failure and dropout in primary education. This program is based on the alteration of the traditional school model, making it possible to group students and to manage time and space for instruction in a flexible way, which lead to a new generation of educational policies, more centered on supporting local initiatives of each school. This talk discusses the result of a multiple case study research carried out to understand if the way schools have reorganized themselves within these projects has been perceived as learning promoting.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr. Maria Ilídia de Meireles Cabral da Rocha holds a PhD in Educational Sciences and is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Education and Psychology of the Catholic University of Portugal, teaching Research Methodologies, Project Development in Education, School Administration and Organization and Sociology of Education. She coordinates the advanced courses in Education and supervises several Masters and PhD dissertations in the field of Educational Sciences. She is an integrated member of the Centre for Studies in Human Development (CEDH) of the Catholic University of Portugal, a member of the Assessment Committee of projects in the field of Educational Sciences and Politics of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), and author of several articles, books and book chapters."

In August 2-9, Pro-Rector Vincent Yang joined 19 professors from 5 other local universities and colleges in a one-week visit to Cambridge University. The professors were chosen by GAES through a competitive selection process to attend a training and exchange program delivered by Selwyn College and the UK-China Development Center in England. The group attended a series of seminars to discuss global trend and internationalization of higher education, interactive teaching, inter-disciplinary research, and university funding and management strategies. The group also visited several faculties and colleges in Cambridge University, Oxford and London. In addition, Prof. Yang met with senior professors of the Cambridge law faculty which hosted him when he was a visiting scholar in the 1980s. Cambridge is ranked a world top 5 university. The University has 91 Nobel Prize laureates and admits “straight A” students internationally. In the past 100 years, many Chinese students and scholars received education at Cambridge. On August 7, Cambridge held a celebration to honor the famous Chinese poet Xu Zhimo, who attended the university three times in the 1920s. His poem “Goodbye Again, Cambridge” is taught in all high schools in both mainland China and Taiwan. In his speech at the closing ceremony of the visit in Cambridge, Prof Yang proposed to the host that Macau and Cambridge should develop a closer relationship to support the development of higher education in Macau.

Exhibition
The exhibition is organized by the University of Southern California School of Architecture in partnership with USC’s American Academy in China. It is curated by USC professor and AAC director Gary Paige.
Location
AVIC Legend Co., Ltd. Factory Hall, 2 Building, Shahe Industry District, Qiaoxiang Rd., Nanshan, Shenzhen, Guangdong, China
深圳市南山区侨香路中航沙河工业区2号厂房1楼 中航里城有限 公司
Dates
23 July 23 – 31 August, 2015
Theme
While so much attention has been paid to how major cities have evolved, very little attention has been paid to the dynamics of more remote regions and villages that have been undergoing their own brands of transformation under China’s decades-long development boom. What can be learned from this “middle zone”? What opportunities exist for new paradigms of growth? What does this reveal about the multiple and complex nature of contemporary approaches to design and development in China? How does this contribute to a more nuanced understanding of China, not as a monolith, but as a patchwork of different identities, places, and thought? The exhibition is centered on these and other important questions.
