ABOUT THE TALK
In the beginning of the 21st century, the Portuguese Ministry of Education launched “Programa Mais Sucesso Escolar”, with the objective of preventing school failure and dropout in primary education. This program is based on the alteration of the traditional school model, making it possible to group students and to manage time and space for instruction in a flexible way, which lead to a new generation of educational policies, more centered on supporting local initiatives of each school. This talk discusses the result of a multiple case study research carried out to understand if the way schools have reorganized themselves within these projects has been perceived as learning promoting.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr. Maria Ilídia de Meireles Cabral da Rocha holds a PhD in Educational Sciences and is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Education and Psychology of the Catholic University of Portugal, teaching Research Methodologies, Project Development in Education, School Administration and Organization and Sociology of Education. She coordinates the advanced courses in Education and supervises several Masters and PhD dissertations in the field of Educational Sciences. She is an integrated member of the Centre for Studies in Human Development (CEDH) of the Catholic University of Portugal, a member of the Assessment Committee of projects in the field of Educational Sciences and Politics of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), and author of several articles, books and book chapters."

In August 2-9, Pro-Rector Vincent Yang joined 19 professors from 5 other local universities and colleges in a one-week visit to Cambridge University. The professors were chosen by GAES through a competitive selection process to attend a training and exchange program delivered by Selwyn College and the UK-China Development Center in England. The group attended a series of seminars to discuss global trend and internationalization of higher education, interactive teaching, inter-disciplinary research, and university funding and management strategies. The group also visited several faculties and colleges in Cambridge University, Oxford and London. In addition, Prof. Yang met with senior professors of the Cambridge law faculty which hosted him when he was a visiting scholar in the 1980s. Cambridge is ranked a world top 5 university. The University has 91 Nobel Prize laureates and admits “straight A” students internationally. In the past 100 years, many Chinese students and scholars received education at Cambridge. On August 7, Cambridge held a celebration to honor the famous Chinese poet Xu Zhimo, who attended the university three times in the 1920s. His poem “Goodbye Again, Cambridge” is taught in all high schools in both mainland China and Taiwan. In his speech at the closing ceremony of the visit in Cambridge, Prof Yang proposed to the host that Macau and Cambridge should develop a closer relationship to support the development of higher education in Macau.

Exhibition
The exhibition is organized by the University of Southern California School of Architecture in partnership with USC’s American Academy in China. It is curated by USC professor and AAC director Gary Paige.
Location
AVIC Legend Co., Ltd. Factory Hall, 2 Building, Shahe Industry District, Qiaoxiang Rd., Nanshan, Shenzhen, Guangdong, China
深圳市南山区侨香路中航沙河工业区2号厂房1楼 中航里城有限 公司
Dates
23 July 23 – 31 August, 2015
Theme
While so much attention has been paid to how major cities have evolved, very little attention has been paid to the dynamics of more remote regions and villages that have been undergoing their own brands of transformation under China’s decades-long development boom. What can be learned from this “middle zone”? What opportunities exist for new paradigms of growth? What does this reveal about the multiple and complex nature of contemporary approaches to design and development in China? How does this contribute to a more nuanced understanding of China, not as a monolith, but as a patchwork of different identities, places, and thought? The exhibition is centered on these and other important questions.

string(1893) "As part of USJ’s outreach program, Prof. Samuel Kio led a group of kindergarten teachers from Escola de Santa Teresa (EST) headed by their school principal Sister Lou, to visit the YungWing International Kindergarten in Zhuhai on 3 July 2015.
As a top notch educational institute in Zhuhai, YungWing International Kindergarten is a pioneer leader in innovative early education. Their combination of HighScope Early Education Curriculum and all-around exploration-based learning approach sets a high standard in early education, not only in Zhuhai, but all regions in the southern provinces in china.
As a partner school in teacher placement for USJ’s PGDE program, Escola de Santa Teresa (EST) is located near USJ’s new green campus. The strategic and geographical affiliation between EST and USJ encourages academic cooperation between the two institutes. Under the liaison of Prof. Samuel Kio, the group of delegations from EST visited YungWing on the 3
rd of July. The visitors were introduced to YungWing’s outstanding physical facilities first, which include science rooms, musical rooms, a cooking room and a pottery room, etc. A brief observation of various classes followed. Finally, teachers from both schools engaged in a constructive exchange on perspectives of early education and curriculum designs. The principals from both schools exchanged souvenirs that concludes the fruitful visit.
In the spirit of educational collaborations between USJ and its partner schools, more academic exchanges will be promoted and arranged in the future to bring together ideas and resources that can be shared and explored.

The purpose of the visit is to thank BOC for sponsoring the students who participated in the Alumni Association of University of Saint Joseph (AAUSJ) Beijing Cultural Tour and to discuss on possible collaborations with BOC Macau Youth Association; in appreciation to this, the students presented a souvenir from Beijing. Each student shared their experiences and lessons from the cultural tour with the BOC representatives. Mr. Lao was indeed impressed and appreciative of what the students have shared and encouraged them to know more about the development of China. Mr. Lao also invited our students to consider having internship with BOC during summer time and BOC is also looking forward to sponsor our students in joining more cultural tours in the future.
The visit is a fruitful one and our alumni are very proud of our students representatives.

string(3888) "For this year’s World Social Work Day, University of Saint Joseph, in collaboration with the Social Welfare Bureau, Macau Caritas and the Association of Professional Medical Social Work of Macao organised an "All You Can Eat" Forum Theatre on 30 May 2015 at the Auditorium of Escola São Paulo. Approximately 400 participants attended the activity to share the concern of distribution of resources in the modern society.
The activity began with welcoming speeches from the Head of Department of Research and Planning of the Social Welfare Bureau, Mr. Zhang Hong Xi, and the Rector of USJ, Prof. Peter Stilwell. Followed by an introduction of the theme of 2015 World Social Work Day by Prof. Jacky Ho, Coordinator of the Social Work Programme of USJ. In his welcoming speech, USJ Rector Prof. Stilwell expressed that this was the third consecutive year USJ has been invited to organize the World Social Work Day activities by the Social Welfare Bureau, and that faculty and students of USJ’s Social Work programme have been highly involved in studying the social situation of Macau, this activity is one of the result of the effort of USJ’s social work students.

Prof. Jacky Ho introduced that this year’s World Social Work Day’s theme is ‘Promoting the Dignity and Worth of Peoples’, and this event ‘All You Can Eat Theatre Forum’ is one of a series of three activities organized by the organisers. Two other activities were held in March and May where social workers and students entered into the different communities to understand the real needs of the people in our society and to promote the concept of Family Crisis to children. This ‘All You Can Eat Theatre Forum’ aims to express the concern of the distribution of resources in the modern society, especially in food and other material supplies, in order to raise the awareness on the management and sharing of resources.
Aside from the four organisers, the World Social Work Day event received support from different organisations including Escola São Paulo; Macao Prison Social Assistance, Education and Training Division; Macao Neighborhood Association; Macau Association for the Mentally Handicapped; Fuhong Society of Macau; Macau Social Workers Association; and Campion Arts Association. After the Theatre Forum, different local social enterprises exhibited their products and introduced their work to the participants. Casa de Petisco Sam Meng Chi, Macau Caritas and Macao Prison Social Assistance, Education and Training Division provided snacks made by their members for participants as they enjoy the mini exhibition of Macao’s social enterprises.
