Prof. Nuno Soares will delve into the exhibition’s thematic vision, the intricate process of model-making, and his reflections on representing Macau’s architectural legacy in Venice.
The Parallel Worlds, Exhibition from Macao, China at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, curated by Pritzker Prize laureate Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu, was inaugurated in May 2025. The exhibition highlights a dynamic dialogue between Guest Artist Iwan Baan’s striking photographic works and architectural models and installations developed by USJ’s Department of Architecture and Design and the School of Architecture of the China Academy of Art. On display until 23 November 2025, Parallel Worlds is a poetic exploration of Macao’s urban landscape through architectural language.
USJ attended the event and contributed with the research project “Mapping the Evolution of Macau City 1557–2022” to the exhibition, a series of 3D models that illustrate Macao’s urban development across 450 years. Sponsored by the Macau Foundation and coordinated by Prof. Nuno Soares, Head of the Department of Architecture and Design at FAH, this project is built upon a five-year research initiative conducted with third-year students from the Bachelor of Architectural Studies program within the Evolution of Urban Landscapes module.
In this upcoming sharing session, Prof. Nuno Soares will delve into the exhibition’s thematic vision, the intricate process of model-making, and his reflections on representing Macau’s architectural legacy in Venice. “This project is a testament to Macau’s dynamic urban DNA,” he notes. “By mapping its evolution, we reveal how the city negotiates tradition and modernity—a dialogue crucial for global architectural discourse.”
