On March 20th, 2019, to further experiment the local culture, the Public and International Relations Office took the Spring Semester International Exchange Students for dinner at the “Estabelecimento de Comidas Si Fu Chai (Ilha Verde)”, located near USJ's Ilha Verde Campus. A representative of the Office for Student and Alumni Affairs, that closely comes into contact with the students, also joined the dinner.
Students had the opportunity to try traditional dishes like “deep-fried Bombay duck with peppercorn salt”, “sweet and sour pork” and “deep-fried crab meat box”, while experiencing dining like a local.
The dinner was kindly sponsored by the Macao Foundation.

On March 21st 2019, 11 participants from the Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) and Office for Student and Alumni Affairs (OSAA) representatives took part in a seminar by Executives from the Sands Sustainability Department in The Parisian Macao.
Participants were able to discuss sustainability issues directly with the executives and learn sustainable practices by Sands (China) such as ECO360 and Green Monday.
They also learned about energy and water saving strategies that have guaranteed several accreditations and certifications to Sands' hotels (Macao Green Hotel Award, LEED Silver certificate, among others).
After the seminar, participants visited their recycling facilities, and observed the function of a food digester machine that converts food waste into non-potable water, which can then be disposed via the sewers.

On March 28th, 2019, the Faculty of Creative Industries and the School of Business and Law of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), took an international ensemble of students, from countries including Brazil, France, Guinea-Bissau, Philippines and Portugal, for a tour of the backstage operations of “Elēkrŏn” at Studio City Macao.
This learning opportunity was made possible through the generous invitation of Melco Resorts & Entertainment (Melco). The community development initiative for “Elēkrŏn” was the first of its kind by Melco, and USJ students were lucky to be the first group to learn from Melco managers and operators at the backstage of the show. The group later enjoyed the show, as audience members, as part of a bigger group of 150 students and staff from USJ.
At USJ, we strive to provide a world class learning environment through close collaboration with industries, that bring unforgettable real-life learning experiences to better prepare students for all aspects of their careers. This is made possible by collaborating with organisations like Melco, that continue to bring dazzling international talent and entertainment opportunities to Macao by growing the offering of family and artistically orientated programmes. Moreover, students are able to make an early contact with industry providers, in this case, of the creative and entertainment industry, to gain insightful understanding of its inner workings.

Speaker: Miss Yu Tak Chi, Christine
Date & Time: 4th April 2019, 18:30pm
Venue: University of Saint Joseph, Don Bosco Auditorium, Ilha Verde Campus
About the talk
Though students with giftedness have had higher learning capacities, they also need school and family to work together to bring out their potentials. Teachers do not play only the role of an educator but also as a facilitator for their potentialities. Thus, schools should provide education opportunities for this group of students with higher learning capacities so that they can realise their potentials in a learning environment signified by flexible pedagogies. Gifted education is actually a strategy that helps nurture multi-facetedness of the development of students with giftedness. It could systematically help nurture them in a decent way and take good care of their learning needs.
Parent education is one of the important factors in facilitating gifted education because parents play a significant role in children’s development. Research findings demonstrate that the parenting style is a key factor affecting children’s development and their achievement in future. If parents can thoroughly understand the traits of children with giftedness, assisting them to cope with emotional problems and master well the skills of nurturing them, it will certainly strengthen their learning capacities.
In this seminar, the speaker will share with audience the policy of gifted education in Hong Kong and the curriculum development of gifted education in school so as to assist teachers in Macau to promote the curriculum of gifted education and facilitate students with giftedness to demonstrate and maximize their talents.

ABOUT THE TALK
IIn this talk we will discuss how to draw 360-degree panoramas by hand and how to display them interactively as VR panoramas; further, we use this practical task as a leader to discuss what is, after all, a perspective - as an object of art and as a geometrical entity. We propose a definition that puts an ancient concept - anamor- phosis - at the center of the study of perspective, both classical and spherical. Spherical perspectives are drawings on a plane that capture all the visual informa- tion that your eye can get by rotating freely around a fixed point. They relate in interesting ways to both anamorphosis and cartography. Recent advances by the present author have made spherical perspectives no longer the exclusive of com- puter renderings but another kind of visual tool that can be drawn by the human eye and hand just like classical perspective. We will speak of two spherical per- spectives - fisheye and equirectangular - to show how they connect through their mathematical symmetries. Finally, we will see how to use these hand-drawn per- spectives to generate VR panoramas that can be visualized immersively and inter- actively on a computer or Virtual Reality device.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
António Bandeira Araújo has a Ph.D. in mathematics in the area of geometry, and a Bs.C. in physics, both by the University of Lisbon. He is an assistant professor at Universidade Aberta (the Portuguese Open University) and researcher at CIAC, the Center for Investigation in Arts and Communication. His research has been split into two main areas: in pure mathematics, he has studied singularity theory. In ap- plied mathematics, he studies the relations between geometry and the visual arts and has published on construction methods for spherical perspectives and immer- sive anamorphoses, and on the virtual reality visualizations of spherical perspective drawings. This research connects his personal work as an illustrator and urban sketcher with the mathematical tradition that reaches from the anamorphic works of the Renaissance to the present day.

The Symposium of the Ricci Institutes of Macao and Taipei for 2019 is meant to spark serious discussions in China and Southeast Asia over the role of China’s wisdom traditions in promoting moral leadership in business and the professions. These traditions — as recognised in China’s Constitution, namely, Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhism, Catholicism, Protestant Christianity, and Islam — converge in supporting moral excellence through the teaching and practice of various forms of religious observance: prayer, study of sacred texts, performance of religious rituals, and spiritual self-cultivation or contemplation. We will use the term “Contemplation” to cover forms of meditation or spiritual practice that include those grounded in the Judeo-Christian tradition but also in other wisdom traditions contributing to our deepening appreciation for spirituality, to designate the focus of this year’s conference. Though China’s wisdom traditions differ among themselves in their metaphysical assumptions — that is, the reality of God and the nature of humanity’s relationship to it — they seem to converge in a number of ways they respond to the depth dimension of human experience. It has been one of the great insights of the founder of the Taipei Ricci Institute, Fr. Yves Raguin S.J. (1910-1998) to explore the importance of Contemplation not only as a path to enrich the Christian faith journey but also as a privileged door to enter in dialogue with other religions especially with Buddhism and Daoism.
Date: Thursday and Friday, October 17 and 18, 2019
Venue: Don Bosco Auditorium (University of Saint Joseph, Macao)
Brief for Submission
With this call for papers we invite submissions that focus on a particular aspect of Contemplation, Mission and Martyrdom particularly in the Ignatian tradition, i.e. what it is, and how the opportunities for cross-cultural exchange and communication related to becoming “Contemplative in Action” might be understood and responded to by scholars, entrepreneurs, business leaders, as well as students, faculty, netizens, and others learning through social media. What can we learn from the historic experience of those who put Contemplative silence at the core of their being and action? How might a mission which is genuinely rooted in local cultures not only be enriched through Contemplation but also contribute to new approaches to mission. How do Martyrdom and the blood of martyrs through the centuries help to frame an action-oriented mission which is freed from sectarian concerns but is designed to advance the common good and enhance our capacities for moral leadership and social responsibility?
We encourage papers that reflect on the contributions made by the spiritual and wisdom traditions focused on Contemplative practices that flourished along cultural cross-roads including Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. What is the impact of contemplative traditions on our understanding of the terms of Mission and Martyrdom?
We are looking for papers that bring together theory and practice, research studies and case-based papers that address the intrinsic link between Contemplation, Mission and Martyrdom. We welcome both careful empirical studies and thoughtful and well-developed conceptual work that explore this topic. Empirical studies should be supported by rigorous qualitative or quantitative data analysis. Conceptual work should be clearly grounded in the existing literature. Practitioner papers are welcomed to contribute to our understanding of effective teaching and learning, through research, reports and case studies that address any of the questions suggested here, or others that they believe should be addressed.
Submitted papers should have the potential to make a significant contribution both to action-oriented educational and academic literature and/or organisational development in order to qualify for inclusion in the Conference.
Accepted papers for the Conference will be considered for publication in the MRI Journal.

Submission Dates
Please submit papers or an abstract of 500-700 words for consideration to Brian Chao, at mrijournal@riccimac.org, by 27 April 2019. Authors of accepted papers will be notified by 29 June 2019, and at that time will be given a “Style Sheet” with instructions, on the length of the paper, formatting, the use of APA guidelines, and other technical details. The final deadline for papers is 1 October 2019.

MAXIMUM ILLUD LECTURE SERIES
One Hundred Years ago, Pope Benedict XV called for the missionary activity of the Church to be carried out in future by missionaries from the very countries and cultures being evangelised. This was welcomed by many and resisted by some, but was surely the cornerstone of the Church’s evangelising efforts for a century. To mark this centenary, the Faculty of Religious Studies of the University of Saint Joseph presents a lecture series exploring the history, theology and impact of this teaching, contained in Pope Benedict XV’s document Maximum Illud.

ABOUT THE TALK:
The speaker studied Civil Engineering in the early 1980s, and had worked as an intern in MTR (Mass Transit Railway) construction site. Therefore, he has some close encounters of the theory and practice of STEM. And he also realises the importance of STEM for social and economical development. After ten years of frontline teaching since graduation, he went back to university to teach and conduct research on curriculum issues and teachers’ professional development. Through this journey, he gained fruitful experience in educating people, and recognised the importance of values education in modern civilised societies. Because of these professional qualifications and experiences, the speaker often ask himself this question, “Are we stressing too much on STEM education, but neglecting the cultivation of individual’s values?’. The speaker will share with the audience, particularly school teachers, his experience in this public lecture.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Prof. Tang Kwok-Chun is an Adjunct Associate Professor of the Department of Education Studies, Hong Kong Baptist University. He is also an Honorary Professional Consultant of the Faculty of Education, Chinese University of Hong Kong. He was born in Macao, and received his primary, secondary and tertiary education in Hong Kong. After graduating from the Department of Civil Engineering, the University of Hong Kong in 1983, he started to teach mathematics in a secondary school and coordinated extracurricular activities. A delegation from the "Macau China Nation Cultural Innovation Association", led by the President of the Association, Macao SAR Legislative Assembly member Ms. Song Pek Kei; the Executive Director, Ms. Ding Xiao; and the Vice-President, Ms. Pun Qiu Ting; visited the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) on February 21st, 2019.
The delegation was received by Vice-Rector Professor Álvaro Barbosa to explore possible collaborations with the University to enhance the development and exchanges between the creative cultural industries in Macao and the Greater Bay Area.
The visit was a culmination of prior collaborations between the association and USJ on a number of events, which featured experience-sharing by high-profile industrial designers and Hollywood movie producers with students, respectively, of the USJ Design and newly created Digital Cinema programmes. President Song emphasised that the purpose of the association was to create a platform for the collaboration and diversification of the creative cultural industry of Macao. She believes that this is done through collaboration between the industry and universities in order to create a sustainable ecosystem, which then benefits both students and the society.

Apart from bringing experts in the field of creative industries from around the world to Macao and the region, the association has launched the Macao-Shenzhen Design Week, which has been running for three consecutive years to showcase the work of designers from Macao and Shenzhen. The competition features high-caliber judging panels from the IFF and Red Dot Design Competition judges, which facilitates a venue for the designers to showcase their work in an international setting.
Furthermore, members of the association have set up various outlets in Sands China Limited and Nam Van Lake, and plan for other outlets in the Galaxy Macao. These outlets are a possible venue in which students’ products and/or creations can be showcased and maybe marketed to promote local talent and products. In addition, these outlets can be managed by students under a mentorship/internship programme, where both business students and creative industries' students may gain first-hand experience in the management of creative industries-related activities in a real life setting.
Executive Director Ms. Ding also explored the idea of co-creating a Centre for Product and Design, where USJ and the association would achieve synergies in bringing the best of Mainland China, Portuguese-speaking Countries and Europe to collaborate in the research, design and incubation of new products and talent, benefitting the creative cultural industries of Macao via industry and university collaboration.
Professor Álvaro Barbosa welcomed the ideas and will explore possible collaborations opportunities between USJ and the association. He agrees that USJ can add value to the development and promotion of the creative industries of Macao, through mutual collaboration, especially in the realm of linkage between Portuguese-speaking Countries and the industry of China. In fact, the Faculty of Creative Industries was originally created with the goal of assisting in the development of the industry in Macao. This is evident in the selective programmes launched by USJ in recent years, such as the Design, Architecture and Digital Cinema programmes. The University is also planning to launch Cultural and Arts' Management programmes in conjunction with the School of Business and Law, along with the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, to complement the programmes already in place.
The delegation took a short tour of the Faculty of Creative Industries and gave high praise to the work that USJ has done in the area of supporting the development of the creative industries in Macao, looking forward to collaborations between the University and the association in the near future.

About the talk
The lecture will discuss the Syngnathids form a truly unique family of teleost fish that encompasses pipefishes, seadragons and the iconic seahorses. Apart from obvious genetical, morphological and behavioural similarities, all syngnathids share an unique character that sets them aside from all other taxa, aquatic or terrestrial: male pregnancy. During development, the male’s brood pouch not only provides the embryos with protection and osmoregulation, but it also allows for the exchange of nutrients between parent and offspring, as well as trans-generational immune priming. The syngnathid brood pouch can thus be viewed as a structure analogous to the mammalian uterus and the intimate relationship formed between father and offspring sets the stage for selection to operate. Some of his most recent findings which led to the discovery of a new post-copulatory sexual selection mechanism (the “Woman in Red” effect) where pregnant pipefish males, at the sight of a sexier female, can curb ongoing pregnancies, will be presented in the lecture.
Apart from male pregnancy, some syngnathid species also display sex-role reversal (i.e., females actively compete for male access while males tend to be the choosier sex). This uncommon characteristic has converted sex-role reversed pipefish into extensively used mirror-like model species to address questions related with sexual selection. I will present some of our own results with pipefish, from showing how sex roles are not fixed and can be quickly adjusted according to social surroundings, to depicting the dynamic nature of sexual selection, whose intensity is prone to fluctuate both seasonally and spatially. I will also show how we discovered, in the worm pipefish, an inverted lek mating system, the first ever described in the aquatic environment.
Even though sexual selection is an extremely active research area, its precise impact on adaptation to anthropogenic change remains unresolved, with conflicting evidence emerging from the very few existing studies. Thus, I will also talk about our own approach to understand the role of sexual selection in evolutionary responses to environmental perturbation, namely by using genomics to definitively address the impact in adaptation to climate change (patterns of mating, sexual traits expression, phenotypic condition, genetic variance and, ultimately, survival of local populations).
About the speaker
Nuno Monteiro is currently a researcher at CIBIO/InBIO, a professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University Fernando Pessoa, and an invited professor at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto. He completed his degree in Biology in 1996, followed by a MSc in Applied Ecology (2000) and a PhD (GABBA Program) in Biology (2005). His research focuses mainly in questions related with behaviour and evolution, and he has a special interest in all subjects dealing with sexual selection. His extensive work with syngnathids (a fish family that comprises seahorses, pipefish and seadragons) stems from the interest in understanding the selective processes operating during and/or after sexual reproduction. Due to his large body of published work, mainly on pipefish, he is now a IUCN specialist for the SPS group. Some of his ongoing research include projects dealing with the conservation genomics of endangered syngnathid species and the understanding of the impact of sexual selection in adaptation, under a climate change scenario.
