The Faculty of Creative Industries has collaborated with the Macao Museum of Art and the British Museum for the exhibition “Italian Renaissance Drawings from the British Museum” that officially opened on Thursday, the 11th of April, and will run until the 30th of June.
The University of Saint Joseph was thrilled with this opportunity to be part of this innovative and ambitious project, as well as, honoured to work “alongside” artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Raffaello or Michelangelo to list just a few of them! Our collaboration work is not comparable with the work of The Italian Masters, and we merely hope to open new perspectives on art in museums and offer a different experience to its visitors.
An experience that disrupts the traditional way of visiting a museum. An experience that immerses and permits the visitor a tangible and accessible involvement with part of the exhibition.
Museums around the world have always been open to new technological experimentations and avid of new ways to enrich and showcase their artworks and collections to a new public. It is often an opportunity to look with a different eye, to discover new artistic connections and to experience an artwork like never before.
We see our work presented as the first step in a new type of experimentation, that will teach us and lead us further to new possibles, particularly in the area of universal access and accessibility. Indeed, like any other social organisation, museums have a significant challenge to transform themselves to be more inclusive, and we hope to participate in discussion with this experiment and research.
From the very beginning, we agreed on a few rules that we have been trying to respect along with our work:
- we selected 16 drawings from the British Museum exhibition and we worked on representing them as a physical and tangible object;
- we wanted, as much as possible, visitors to be able to touch the exhibits, as a symbol, to make the exhibits accessible and;
- allow universal accessibility, mainly by trying to give a new experience of the exhibition to visually impaired visitors;
- all exhibits would be produced in Macao with technologies that are currently available in our Digital Fabrication Laboratory of our Faculty of Creative Industries and the support of some of our students.
To give a few numbers to represent the work, we spend more than 2,000 hours of machine time and more than 600 working hours.
For all exhibits, we have been using two essential techniques, namely 3D Printing and Laser cutting and we follow a similar workflow for each piece:
- cleaning the original image of the drawing (removing the background, outlining, enhancing, etc...);
- transforming the drawing into a new image or a 3D model that can be processed by our machines;
- multiple tests usually take place before producing the final exhibits with the machine;
- post-processing the exhibits: we mainly use standard woodworking post-processing such as sanding, priming, painting and varnishing.

From March 4th to March 9th, 2019, the Vice-Rector for Strategic Development and Outreach of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), Prof. Álvaro Barbosa, represented USJ at an international seminar on “Internationalisation, Innovation and Sustainable Development” in Lille (France). The event was organised by the Université Catholique de Lille (UCL), our partner university, and held at UCL’s campus.
The week included sessions on UCL’s innovation projects, a presentation of their on-campus green and sustainable development facilities (“Live Tree Project”), as well as an exchange of best practices on intercultural communication and experience sharing regarding innovative teaching methods.
The event was fruitful, having been a great platform to further develop USJ’s global network, as well as a great learning opportunity to acquire information that will contribute to the enhancement of USJ’s strategies when it comes to the areas of internationalisation, innovation and sustainable development.

“Paper Conservation - The Application of Manual Dripping Method with Paper Pulp”
The manual dripping method with paper pulp is a kind of filling technique for conserving paper objects. Compared with the traditional paper repair method, this method is more suitable for conserving objects which have been seriously damaged and/or with lots of insect holes. Efficiency, flatness and reduced use of paste are part of this method’s benefits.
This lecture will introduce the development and application of the pulp repair technique in Mainland China and foreign countries. Additionally, the lecture will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of four different repair methods, namely, traditional paper repair method, paper pulp manual dripping method, semi-mechanical pulp repair method and leaf-casting method.
“Introduction to Heritage Conservation Science”
We hear words like culture, heritage, conservation, restoration, etc., every day, but do we fully understand their meaning? An explanation of these terms is shared with the audience throughout this lecture. The lecture mainly outlines what culture, cultural heritage, and tangible and intangible cultural heritage are; how to preserve them; and introduces the types of conservation in different museums. Finally, the daily workload of an object conservator will be discussed.
The purpose is to provide Macao citizens with a preliminary understanding of the conservation and restoration of cultural heritage, hopefully increasing the public’s awareness and interest in cultural heritage as a means to achieve sustainable development.
“Paper Splitting - Its Development, Technique and Application”
Paper splitting involves splitting the paper into two layers and adding a thin piece of acid-free paper in between to create a “sandwich” structure. This method is especially suitable for severely deteriorated paper. The advantage of using this method is that it does not affect the object’s appearance and fragile paper objects can be well conserved. Paper splitting is often used to conserve and reinforce archives and rare books that are severely embrittled, such as old newspapers.
There are two types of paper splitting methods: machine splitting and manual splitting. The principle of these two methods are similar and the only difference is that manual splitting must be done by a skilled person. Because of a high risk of irreversible damaging the original paper object, conservation ethics of the paper splitting will be discussed.

On March 21st 2019, 11 participants from the Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) and Office for Student and Alumni Affairs (OSAA) representatives took part in a seminar by Executives from the Sands Sustainability Department in The Parisian Macao.
Participants were able to discuss sustainability issues directly with the executives and learn sustainable practices by Sands (China) such as ECO360 and Green Monday.
They also learned about energy and water saving strategies that have guaranteed several accreditations and certifications to Sands' hotels (Macao Green Hotel Award, LEED Silver certificate, among others).
After the seminar, participants visited their recycling facilities, and observed the function of a food digester machine that converts food waste into non-potable water, which can then be disposed via the sewers.

On March 28th, 2019, the Faculty of Creative Industries and the School of Business and Law of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), took an international ensemble of students, from countries including Brazil, France, Guinea-Bissau, Philippines and Portugal, for a tour of the backstage operations of “Elēkrŏn” at Studio City Macao.
This learning opportunity was made possible through the generous invitation of Melco Resorts & Entertainment (Melco). The community development initiative for “Elēkrŏn” was the first of its kind by Melco, and USJ students were lucky to be the first group to learn from Melco managers and operators at the backstage of the show. The group later enjoyed the show, as audience members, as part of a bigger group of 150 students and staff from USJ.
At USJ, we strive to provide a world class learning environment through close collaboration with industries, that bring unforgettable real-life learning experiences to better prepare students for all aspects of their careers. This is made possible by collaborating with organisations like Melco, that continue to bring dazzling international talent and entertainment opportunities to Macao by growing the offering of family and artistically orientated programmes. Moreover, students are able to make an early contact with industry providers, in this case, of the creative and entertainment industry, to gain insightful understanding of its inner workings.

Speaker: Miss Yu Tak Chi, Christine
Date & Time: 4th April 2019, 18:30pm
Venue: University of Saint Joseph, Don Bosco Auditorium, Ilha Verde Campus
About the talk
Though students with giftedness have had higher learning capacities, they also need school and family to work together to bring out their potentials. Teachers do not play only the role of an educator but also as a facilitator for their potentialities. Thus, schools should provide education opportunities for this group of students with higher learning capacities so that they can realise their potentials in a learning environment signified by flexible pedagogies. Gifted education is actually a strategy that helps nurture multi-facetedness of the development of students with giftedness. It could systematically help nurture them in a decent way and take good care of their learning needs.
Parent education is one of the important factors in facilitating gifted education because parents play a significant role in children’s development. Research findings demonstrate that the parenting style is a key factor affecting children’s development and their achievement in future. If parents can thoroughly understand the traits of children with giftedness, assisting them to cope with emotional problems and master well the skills of nurturing them, it will certainly strengthen their learning capacities.
In this seminar, the speaker will share with audience the policy of gifted education in Hong Kong and the curriculum development of gifted education in school so as to assist teachers in Macau to promote the curriculum of gifted education and facilitate students with giftedness to demonstrate and maximize their talents.

ABOUT THE TALK
IIn this talk we will discuss how to draw 360-degree panoramas by hand and how to display them interactively as VR panoramas; further, we use this practical task as a leader to discuss what is, after all, a perspective - as an object of art and as a geometrical entity. We propose a definition that puts an ancient concept - anamor- phosis - at the center of the study of perspective, both classical and spherical. Spherical perspectives are drawings on a plane that capture all the visual informa- tion that your eye can get by rotating freely around a fixed point. They relate in interesting ways to both anamorphosis and cartography. Recent advances by the present author have made spherical perspectives no longer the exclusive of com- puter renderings but another kind of visual tool that can be drawn by the human eye and hand just like classical perspective. We will speak of two spherical per- spectives - fisheye and equirectangular - to show how they connect through their mathematical symmetries. Finally, we will see how to use these hand-drawn per- spectives to generate VR panoramas that can be visualized immersively and inter- actively on a computer or Virtual Reality device.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
António Bandeira Araújo has a Ph.D. in mathematics in the area of geometry, and a Bs.C. in physics, both by the University of Lisbon. He is an assistant professor at Universidade Aberta (the Portuguese Open University) and researcher at CIAC, the Center for Investigation in Arts and Communication. His research has been split into two main areas: in pure mathematics, he has studied singularity theory. In ap- plied mathematics, he studies the relations between geometry and the visual arts and has published on construction methods for spherical perspectives and immer- sive anamorphoses, and on the virtual reality visualizations of spherical perspective drawings. This research connects his personal work as an illustrator and urban sketcher with the mathematical tradition that reaches from the anamorphic works of the Renaissance to the present day.

The Symposium of the Ricci Institutes of Macao and Taipei for 2019 is meant to spark serious discussions in China and Southeast Asia over the role of China’s wisdom traditions in promoting moral leadership in business and the professions. These traditions — as recognised in China’s Constitution, namely, Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhism, Catholicism, Protestant Christianity, and Islam — converge in supporting moral excellence through the teaching and practice of various forms of religious observance: prayer, study of sacred texts, performance of religious rituals, and spiritual self-cultivation or contemplation. We will use the term “Contemplation” to cover forms of meditation or spiritual practice that include those grounded in the Judeo-Christian tradition but also in other wisdom traditions contributing to our deepening appreciation for spirituality, to designate the focus of this year’s conference. Though China’s wisdom traditions differ among themselves in their metaphysical assumptions — that is, the reality of God and the nature of humanity’s relationship to it — they seem to converge in a number of ways they respond to the depth dimension of human experience. It has been one of the great insights of the founder of the Taipei Ricci Institute, Fr. Yves Raguin S.J. (1910-1998) to explore the importance of Contemplation not only as a path to enrich the Christian faith journey but also as a privileged door to enter in dialogue with other religions especially with Buddhism and Daoism.
Date: Thursday and Friday, October 17 and 18, 2019
Venue: Don Bosco Auditorium (University of Saint Joseph, Macao)
Brief for Submission
With this call for papers we invite submissions that focus on a particular aspect of Contemplation, Mission and Martyrdom particularly in the Ignatian tradition, i.e. what it is, and how the opportunities for cross-cultural exchange and communication related to becoming “Contemplative in Action” might be understood and responded to by scholars, entrepreneurs, business leaders, as well as students, faculty, netizens, and others learning through social media. What can we learn from the historic experience of those who put Contemplative silence at the core of their being and action? How might a mission which is genuinely rooted in local cultures not only be enriched through Contemplation but also contribute to new approaches to mission. How do Martyrdom and the blood of martyrs through the centuries help to frame an action-oriented mission which is freed from sectarian concerns but is designed to advance the common good and enhance our capacities for moral leadership and social responsibility?
We encourage papers that reflect on the contributions made by the spiritual and wisdom traditions focused on Contemplative practices that flourished along cultural cross-roads including Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam.What is the impact of contemplative traditions on our understanding of the terms of Mission and Martyrdom?
We are looking for papers that bring together theory and practice, research studies and case-based papers that address the intrinsic link between Contemplation, Mission and Martyrdom. We welcome both careful empirical studies and thoughtful and well-developed conceptual work that explore this topic. Empirical studies should be supported by rigorous qualitative or quantitative data analysis. Conceptual work should be clearly grounded in the existing literature. Practitioner papers are welcomed to contribute to our understanding of effective teaching and learning, through research, reports and case studies that address any of the questions suggested here, or others that they believe should be addressed.
Submitted papers should have the potential to make a significant contribution both to action-oriented educational and academic literature and/or organisational development in order to qualify for inclusion in the Conference.
Accepted papers for the Conference will be considered for publication in the MRI Journal.

MAXIMUM ILLUD LECTURE SERIES
One Hundred Years ago, Pope Benedict XV called for the missionary activity of the Church to be carried out in future by missionaries from the very countries and cultures being evangelised. This was welcomed by many and resisted by some, but was surely the cornerstone of the Church’s evangelising efforts for a century. To mark this centenary, the Faculty of Religious Studies of the University of Saint Joseph presents a lecture series exploring the history, theology and impact of this teaching, contained in Pope Benedict XV’s document Maximum Illud.
