On December 14th 2018, the Council for the Promotion of Guangdong – Hong Kong and Macao Cooperation reelected its members and executives during its General Assembly. Furthermore, University of Saint Joseph was mentioned for the successful organization of the Delegation’s visit to Portugal and Spain, which took place from June 30th 2018 to July 7th 2018.
This was the result of work done by USJ senior lecturer; Emil Marques who was elected this term as an Executive Board Member of the council. The report also featured the meeting of USJ Vice Rector Prof. Alvaro Barbosa with Alberto Carvalho Neto, President of the Portugal – China Young Entrepreneurs Association and Delegation members during their visit to Porto. The delegation understands USJ’s international education experience and capacity and hopes USJ can explore opportunities for further Sino – Luso education collaborations between Portugal and Macao to benefit the Great Bay Area. The meeting laid foundations for future collaborations between the arts and cultural committee of the Council and USJ, which promises future Portuguese and Chinese cultural interaction and exchange.

About the talk
Many students with disabilities struggle with everyday tasks within the classroom. Simply writing or organising information can be a daunting task. One way to address difficulties faced by students is through the use of assistive technology. Assistive technology is available in many forms, including low (or no) tech, medium tech and high tech. A framework for determining appropriate assistive technology for an individual student will be described and participants will be shown how to relate the framework to students within their own classroom. Creative teachers are instrumental in problem solving for their students and determining appropriate tools for their individual contexts.
In this public lecture, a variety of low-tech and medium tech tools will be explored which may be used with a range of students. For example, handwriting can be facilitated by using a differently shaped pen or pen grip, or bypassed completely through the use of voice to text options. Participants will be exposed to a range of AT tools and encouraged to determine how and when they may be appropriately used within the classroom.

A group of students of Master of Environmental Science and Management (MES), one PhD in Science and Alumni family members visited on December 10th2018 the Eco-Park in Tuen Mun in Hong Kong under the supervisions of Prof. Franz Gassner. The first stop was the new Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Treatment and Recycling Facility of the Hong Kong Government, called WEEE-Park. WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment and it is the fastest growing waste steam globally. The HK Government commissioned a German company (ALBA Integrated Waste Solutions) to design, build and operate this facility to treat 30-50 tons of WEEE per day out of the 190 tons accumulated every day (70.000 tons per year). The facility adopts advanced technologies and equipment for treating waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and recovering precious resources such as plastics and metals through a series of detoxification, dismantling and recycling processes. The USJ Students were especially eager to know more about the waste producer responsibility scheme on WEEE that will be fully implemented in Hong Kong on Dec. 31st2018. Since August 1st2018 all sellers of air-conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, televisions, computers, printers, scanners and monitors have to arrange for consumers a free removal service to collect the same type of equipment abandoned by a consumer by a specified collector for proper treatment by a licensed recycler. Through the removal service, the consumer can request the seller to remove the old piece of equipment for free on a "one-piece-to-one-piece" basis.
The second stop in Tuen Mun was the ECO-PARK Visitor Center with educational facilities on energy and resource responsibility, waste avoidance, reduction, and recycling. Eight educational zones – including a Waste Corridor, a Movie Area, a 3-D Landfill Model, 3Rs Zone, Reflection Pond, Group Game Zone, and Plastic Recycling Education Centre – deepen the understanding of municipal solid waste management, resource responsibility, and a more sustainable life-style.

On the 30th of November 2018, our 3rd-year student of fashion design, Alina Garcia, was awarded the silver prize (second place) in the CPTTM 3D design contest. Alina Garcia’s design was inspired by the 3D animation movie "Spirited Away" (2001) directed by one of the greatest Japanese animation moviemaker Miyazaki Hayao. Her design refers to a world of fantasy that actually reflects uncertainties in the realistic world during "The lost decade" in Japan (2001-2010). Alina says that “people tend to go for astrology when facing uncertainties” and she adds: “geometric shapes were applied in the design since they are mostly used in astrology and symbolizes opportunities and hopes”. The design speaks "Where there is a will, there is a way".The Award Ceremony was held on the 30th of November 2018 at the CPPTM Head Office Auditorium, in Macau.

string(1975) "The Faculty of Religious Studies of University of Saint Joseph (USJ) celebrated its yearly Faculty Day on December 4th 2018, at the Seminary Campus of USJ. The celebration was under the motto "The Word Was Made Flesh". The new Dean of FRS, Rev. Dr. Stephen Morgan, opened the day with an inaugural lecture on the relevance and relation of faith and reason and the specific role of the university as community which exists, as Bl. John Henry Newman put it, to "learn to reason well in all matters". Dr. Morgan laid out the aspiration for the Faculty of Religions Studies to be at the very heart of the Mission and Identity of the USJ.
Bishop Stephen Lee, Chancellor of USJ, celebrated the Holy Mass for the feast of St John Danascene with the whole Faculty and University Officials, among them Prof. Fr. Rector Peter Stilwell, Vice-Rector Prof. Álvaro Barbosa, Acting Vice-Rector Prof. Rochelle Ge, and the Dean of the School of Business, Prof. Jenny Lao-Phillips. At the faculty lunch, the birthdays of Prof. Fr. Rector Peter Stilwell and Fr. Fausto Gomez, OP were celebrated. The FRS Student Association organised various sport activities after lunch, where students and staff could experience first-hand what it is to have "mens sana in corpore sana", a healthy mind in a health body, and specifically the joy of being called together, coming from many nations sharing life and faith by following the Word who becomes flesh.

About the talk
To a largely visual and auditory species, such as ourselves, the importance of chemical communication is often under-estimated, or even ignored. Nevertheless, it is the most ancient and widespread form of communication among all living organisms. Many animals - including fish - rely heavily on chemical communication especially during reproduction to find, identify and choose mates, and to synchronise the final maturation and release of gametes. We have been investigating reproductive pheromones in the Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus), a maternal mouth-brooding African cichlid. Until recently, the focus has been on the male. For example, we have identified a steroid glucuronate pheromone in male urine that induces final oocyte maturation in females. However, our attention has now shifted to the females' side: are females also releasing chemical signals that affect the physiology and/or behaviour of the males? This talk will briefly summarise what we know about pheromonal communication in the tilapia, before focusing on some recent results on the possible identity and biological role(s) of chemical cues released by the females.
About the speaker
Peter Hubbard trained as an endocrinologist under Ian W. Henderson at the University of Sheffield (UK). His interest in electrophysiology began during a post-doc at the University of Manchester (UK) using intracellular sharp electrode recording to investigate the regulation of activity of neuroendocrine Dahlgren cells in fish. This was followed by patch-clamp investigations of the 5-HT3 receptor at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology (Cambridge, UK). Now based at Centro de Ciências do Mar (Faro, Portugal), he uses extracellular electrophysiological techniques (among others) to investigate the olfactory and chemical communication systems of fish and, occasionally, other animals. Inevitably, this includes the effects of anthropogenic activity, such as ocean acidification and heavy metal pollution, on such systems. However, he attempts to keep as broad an interest in sensory physiology and endocrinology as time - and funding - allow."
