About the talk
To a largely visual and auditory species, such as ourselves, the importance of chemical communication is often under-estimated, or even ignored. Nevertheless, it is the most ancient and widespread form of communication among all living organisms. Many animals - including fish - rely heavily on chemical communication especially during reproduction to find, identify and choose mates, and to synchronise the final maturation and release of gametes. We have been investigating reproductive pheromones in the Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus), a maternal mouth-brooding African cichlid. Until recently, the focus has been on the male. For example, we have identified a steroid glucuronate pheromone in male urine that induces final oocyte maturation in females. However, our attention has now shifted to the females' side: are females also releasing chemical signals that affect the physiology and/or behaviour of the males? This talk will briefly summarise what we know about pheromonal communication in the tilapia, before focusing on some recent results on the possible identity and biological role(s) of chemical cues released by the females.
About the speaker
Peter Hubbard trained as an endocrinologist under Ian W. Henderson at the University of Sheffield (UK). His interest in electrophysiology began during a post-doc at the University of Manchester (UK) using intracellular sharp electrode recording to investigate the regulation of activity of neuroendocrine Dahlgren cells in fish. This was followed by patch-clamp investigations of the 5-HT3 receptor at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology (Cambridge, UK). Now based at Centro de Ciências do Mar (Faro, Portugal), he uses extracellular electrophysiological techniques (among others) to investigate the olfactory and chemical communication systems of fish and, occasionally, other animals. Inevitably, this includes the effects of anthropogenic activity, such as ocean acidification and heavy metal pollution, on such systems. However, he attempts to keep as broad an interest in sensory physiology and endocrinology as time - and funding - allow."

About the talk
The lecture will discuss the main characteristics, types, mode of formation, occurrence and economic value of the major seafloor mineral resources. It will comment on the mineral potential of the continental margins and formation of marine placers, on the formation and possible mining of the polymetallic Mn-nodules at the abyssal plains, on the deposition of Co-rich Fe-Mn-crusts at the seamounts, and on the spectacular polymetallic hydrothermal sulphides precipitated at mid-ocean ridges, back-arc basins and volcanic arcs. The lecture is designed for students, researchers but also for non-professionals.

ABOUT THE TALK
Professor Heitor Alvelos will present two projects currently under development at his Research Center, Unexpected Media Lab / ID+ in Porto, Portugal. A subsequent Q&A session will be most welcome, particularly in regards to the potential for comparative studies with Macau.
AntiAmnesia: Design research as an agent for narrative and material regeneration and reinvention of vanishing Portuguese manufacturing cultures and techniques.
AntiAmnesia stems from an evidence: traditional industries in Northern and Central Portugal face core viability challenges due to radically new production models and fast consumer shifts. Simultaneously, a wealth of historical crafts and skills face disappearance due to a lack of resources, communication and narrative. We posit there is reciprocal value and potential for recovery in a dynamic convergence of traditional industry and historical craft towards mutual reinvention and revitalisation.
Wisdom Transfer: towards the scientific inscription of individual legacies in contexts of retirement from art and design higher education and research.
Wisdom Transfer aims at establishing the groundwork for an acknowledgment, communication and activation of contributions to culture and society from knowledge and experience by retired art and design [AD] academics. The scientific heritage of AD may have preceded the actual discipline through a first generation of researchers that led a transition from practice to academia; yet this heritage has been off-radar due to a lack of a framework beyond curricular and scientific demands. It is argued that the legitimisation of empirical experience in AD research will contribute to the scope and depth of the discipline, and further inform multi-disciplinarity.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Heitor Alvelos has pioneered the implementation of Design Research in Portugal, both as member of the Scientific Board for Humanities and Social Sciences of the National Foundation for Science and Technology, and as Director of ID+ (Institute for Research in Design, Media and Culture) on behalf of the University of Porto. Since 2006 Heitor has been developing R&D within the UTAustin-Portugal Program for Digital Media, where he served as Outreach Director (2010-2014), and where he curates the FuturePlaces Medialab for Citizenship since 2008. Heitor is currently Chair of the Scientific Board (HSS) at the Foundation for Science and Technology. He is Course Director of the PhD Program in Design of the University of Porto. His research interests currently gravitate towards the lexical implications of social media, the ecology of perception, and cultural criminology.

ABOUT THE TALK

University of Saint Joseph – Faculty of Creative Industries organized a unique interactive session with two Hollywood animation gurus, Mr. Chris Hendersen and Mr. Jay Ahn, to share experience and tips on the Hollywood animation industry. This event was made possible with the support of the Macau Cultural Promotion Association, Association for Talent Development in the Creative and Cultural Industries of Macao and Macao Ethnic Minority Creative Cultural Association.
The event brought to USJ, Mr. Chris Henderson and Mr. Jay Ahn veteran Hollywood animation producers with a successful track record of producing and managing the likes of “Hunchback of Notre Dame II”, “The Nut Job” and many others.
The two producers emphasized the need for talent and training for the youth in understanding the process of animation and immerse oneself in the art of storytelling to increase the repertoire of stories to be told. Moreover, they stressed the role of partnerships with school and the industry in identifying opportunities for students and developing talent early on in their careers. Mr. Jay Ahn also reflected the need for government support and a clear vision. For example, South Korea invested in various hardware and studios in the development of the industry, which lends itself, not only in animation but gaming, VR and modeling applications.
Mr. Henderson also reiterated the fact that it was necessary to form an ecosystem for the sustainable development of talent and also attracting international talent and from his first impressions, Macau seems to have what it takes to attract international talent once the proper ecosystem has been created.
It is a privilege and honor to be able to have such an international lineup of Masters to share their experience and contribute to the advancement of Digital Cinema and 3D Animation education in Macau. USJ continues to inspire students and broaden horizons by providing unique opportunities through its networks to provide the best educational experience via its innovative and industry focused programs.

On October 15 and Nov 7, 2018, the Year 3 and Year 4 Students of Infant Visual Arts and Music Education, School of Education - University of Saint Joseph had opportunities to understand the learning needs and teaching strategies of young children with hearing impairment through the Macau Deaf Association (MDA): In order to promote social cohesion and as part of the inclusive education pedagogical awareness, Professor Carrie Ho held the two workshops for using sign language as a tool for children song learning. During the workshop, a deaf-mute teacher with a colleague of MDA shared the diversified services of the Association; the updated statistics of students with hearing impairment; the characteristics of sign language; and the learning needs of children with hearing impairment and related teaching strategies. Through hearing blockage game and sign language bingo, USJ’s students learnt some useful signs for the daily terms. The workshops completed successfully with our students signing two songs with lots of smiles and loving understanding of the needs of people with hearing impairment. Further collaborations between USJ and MDA will be developed to promote social cohesion and inclusive education excellence.
