About the Talk
The formation of Macao Creole Portuguese, locally known as Patuá or Maquista, is attributed to the speakers of Portuguese-based creole languages in Asia, especially Papia Kristang, the Malayo-Portuguese of Malacca. However, the Malaccan origin of Maquista is not generally accepted or understood by the local community. While the grammar of Kristang and other Creole Portuguese varieties have been documented by scholars, for comparative analysis, substantial gaps needed to be filled concerning the grammatical description of Maquista. From a typological perspective, the application of phylogenetic tools can clarify the historical formation of Maquista. However, while considering a possible revitalization of the language, the research should assess the significance of the Malayo-Portuguese elements in popular narratives and relate the language to current practices. From a theoretical perspective, the structural paradigm, prevalent in creole linguistics, is challenged by postcolonial critical theories.
About the Speaker:
Alexandre Lebel, MSc (Université de Montréal), MESM (USJ) was educated in Montreal and Macao and studied anthropology and environment technologies. He is currently a PhD candidate at University of Saint Joseph. His doctoral dissertation is on the grammar of Macao Creole Portuguese. He has previously worked in the environment sector in Quebec and he is involved in environmental education activities in Macao.

Covid-19 impacts our life and world dramatically. Scientists claim, that this situation might have been caused – among other factors – by a wrong treatment of nature by humans. Did nature put its brakes on to correct human behavior? Can we humans discover in nature how to act correctly? Does nature help us to get to know what to do? Philosophically speaking, should actions follow our being (agere sequitur esse), and is ethics fundamentally hooked up with reality and ontology? (bonum et verum convertuntur). Does the “ought” follow from the “is”, and should human life and societies comply with how things are?
After overcoming the mechanistic reductionism of the “natural fallacy”, which denies “value judgments” originating from “is” or facts, this Lecture Series attempts to trace back question of “natural goodness” (Philippa Foot), morals and good actions “in accord with reason” (S. Thomas Aquinas, S.Th. I-II.21.1.; ST I-II, 90.1). The philosophical and catholic tradition calls this the morality of the “natural law”. The lectures shed light on development and relevance of Natural Law from different philosophical and theological angles.
About the Talk & Speaker:
This lecture examines how studies in the behavioural sciences relate to Natural Law theory. In particular it looks into the idea of ‘consent’ in human acts. This will be done by exploring the interplay between human reason and the biological-psychological-cultural factors that influence human behaviour. It will also point to certain paradoxes of being human where ‘consent’ has to contend with the complexity and rigor of negotiation when confronted with the morality of decision-making.

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) held its annual Career Fair on April 13 and 14 (Tuesday and Wednesday) at Kent Wong Exhibition Gallery in USJ Ilha Verde Campus, with this year’s theme being “Support Innovative Diversity. Welcome Economic Recovery”. More than 60 public and private companies and organisations from different industries, coming from Macao and the Greater Bay Area, joined the event, providing more than 1,300 vacancies and internship opportunities, covering entry, mid or senior-level positions.
The opening ceremony took place at the Auditório Centenário de Fátima at 10 a.m. on April 13, 2021, and was officiated by the Most Reverend Bishop Stephen Lee Bun-sang, Chancellor of USJ; Reverend Prof. Stephen Morgan, Rector of USJ; Mr. Li Yong Le, Assistant of the Education and Youth Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao Special Administrative Region; Mr. Chan Iok Wai, Director of the Student Affairs Department of the Education and Youth Development Bureau; Mr. Peng Jin Gang, Deputy Secretary-General of the Youth Federation of Nansha District, Guangzhou; and Mr. Clarence Wong, President-Board of Directors of the Macau Greater Bay Area Human Resources Association. The ceremony was attended by prestigious guests of various companies, along with the Vice-Rectors, Pro-Rector and Deans of USJ.
Over a dozen work seminars were arranged and speakers from different industries shared their entrepreneurial experiences. The two-day programme included job interview preparation workshops, alumni and student “chit-chat” sharing sessions, one-on-one mock interviews and resumé analyses, career talks and youth entrepreneurship innovation panel discussions. Different organisations from the Greater Bay Area were also invited to share their start-up experiences and employment opportunities, with the aim of supporting young graduates to integrate into the development of the region.
The COVID-19 pandemic has hit Macao’s economy hard, with the unemployment rate at the highest levels seen in the past decade, so to foster economic recovery, local industries must innovate and diversify their businesses. The University also hopes that the Career Fair provides students and alumni with more comprehensive employment information through communication and interaction with corporate representatives, speakers, guests, and senior alumni to enhance their employment opportunities.

About the Talk
There is now overwhelming evidence that anthropogenic activities are increasingly altering the planet climate, driving oceans towards irreversible ecological transformations. These changes are expected to challenge many marine organisms across multiple levels of biological organization. In this talk I will present how seahorses are affected by these environmental changes. Although seahorses are one of the most enigmatic, unique and mysterious species in the oceans, their populations have been declining worldwide primarily because of habitat degradation, pollution and overexploitation. Given their vulnerability to disturbances of their natural habitat and unique lifestyle characteristics it is important to understand how they will withstand additional stress from fast pace environmental climate changes. I will here discuss how ocean warming and acidification affects the physiology, development and behaviour of temperate and tropical seahorses (Hippocampus guttulatus and Hippocampus reidi).
About the Speaker:
Marta Pimentel, marine biology from the Faculty of Science of the University of Lisbon (FCUL, Portugal) with a master degree in Aquaculture from the Canarian Institute of Marine Sciences of the University of Las Palmas, Gran Canary-ICCM-CIHEAM-IAMZ (Spain) and PhD in Sea Sciences from the Faculty of Science of the University of Lisbon (2016). Marta Pimentel is currently a post-doctoral researcher at MARE (Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre, FCUL). She has dedicated her recent research to analyse how the combined impacts of climate change drivers affect a comprehensive set of biological responses of marine biota, namely the development of seahorses, sharks, sole fish, seabream, meagre, dolphinfish, cuttlefish, octopus, squid, sea slugs, etc. She has analysed, in a holistic perspective, several biological responses of marine organisms to climate change, such as phenotypic altering of developmental, skeletal, behavioral and ecophysiological features.

About the talk:
The Forum on “Jesuit Art in Macau: between Goa and Japan (16th – 17th centuries)”, covers the research project of the Macau Ricci Institute at the University of Saint Joseph focused on Jesuit art in Macau and its unique process of cultural and religious exchange and innovation. It features the intermingling of architectural and devotional patterns between the Japan, China, India and Europe. Jesuit art in Macau was a hybrid production melting Jesuit general practices following the celebrated Modum Nostrum with an amazing range of highly skilled artists coming from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Particular attention is given to artists who found refuge in Macau from persecutions in Japan. Artistic and devotional practices were exported from Macau to Japan and beyond. Macau, a peripherical area at the beginning, turned into a new centre of art and devotion.
About the speaker:
Prof. Dr. Cristina Osswald, 歐詩畫,博士, is an art historian who has earned her PhD from the European University Institute, Florence, Italy, with the dissertation on Jesuit Art in Goa (1542-1622): From “Modo Nostro” to “Modo Goano” (2003). She has taught in various Universities in Portugal and is presently lecturing at the Macau Polytechnical Institute. Her publications include: Written in Stone: Jesuit Buildings in Goa and their artistic and architectural features (2013), and the co-edition of the book Morte e Martírios: Fazer da Morte uma Vitória (2020). Her research is focused on Jesuit art, devotion and material culture within the Portuguese empire between the 16th and the 18th centuries.

This lecture will introduce the natural law theory developed by the great medieval theologian Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274). We will look at the place of the natural law in the theological framework of his masterwork Summa theologiae, explain what is law and why the law is called natural, and finally answer the question whether the natural law is an idea alien to Christian revelation.
Prof. Thomas Cai, PhD in Theology (History of Theology), KU Leuven.

About the talk:
Since Matteo Ricci, Jesuits in China had recognized an authentic discourse on God in the writings of Confucius and of his school, opening a fruitful venue for Christianity to take roots in Chinese culture. However, since Ricci, the missionaries and the Chinese Christians had rejected the School of Principle of Zhu Xi and its concepts of Taiji, Li, Qi and guishen. In his Philosophia Sinica (1711), François Noël argued that Neo-confucianism continued and deepened the ancient discourse on God, and he accepts Taiji as a legitimate concept for God in the philosophical sense. Why was Noël able to examine afresh Neo-confucianism? How he did it? What are the consequences for Christian theology? Those questions are like an invitation to go forward in the dialogue between Confucianism and Christianity in the 21st centrury.

About the Talk:
Granites are the most abundant rocks in the continental crust, which makes their study essential to understand the origin and evolution of this terrestrial reservoir. The large crystals in granites are evidence that they cooled slowly from a magma beneath Earth's surface. However, the erosion of the overlying sedimentary rocks through geological time, exposes the granites at the surface. By collecting samples from outcrops and carrying out field and microscopic observations as well as different types of analytical analyses, the study of their textures, minerals and geochemistry provides key information about their origin. In this talk, we will explore how the petrological and geochemical study of granites outcropping in Macao can contribute to our understanding of the source and causes of compositional variability in granitic magmas, while providing important clues on the tectono-magmatic evolution of one of the largest granitic provinces in the world – the Southeast China Magmatic Belt.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Pedro Quelhas is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Macao University of Science and Technology (MUST) and a researcher at Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL). He completed his Ph.D. in Geology (speciality in Geochemistry) at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ, Macau) and at the University of Lisbon (UL, Portugal). His research interests lie in the area of petrology and geochemistry of magmatic rocks. For the past five years his research has focused on granites, particularly on the causes of their chemical variability as well as the sources, magma evolution processes and tectonic settings behind the formation of granites in Macao, having published several research articles on the topic.

About the talk:
The publication in 1916 of Saussure’s Cours de Linguistique Générale introduces for the first time some of the most basic operational concepts, such the linguistic sign, arbitrariness, the distinctions between language and speech, diachrony vs. synchrony, etc., which today we all take for granted. The Cours marks the launching of modern synchronic linguistics as a discipline completely autonomous from what had been done throughout the 19th century. But, although credited with being the father of linguistic Structuralism, Saussure was, in fact, an Junggrammatiker and a fellow companion of important philologists such as Brugmann or Delbrück. In 1878, while still a student, Saussure draw the basic structural lines of what today is known as the Laryngeal Theory, still one of the most complex philological issues one has to fight with. His genius manifested itself not only in his avant-garde views but perhaps more in how he got there.
About the Speaker:
Prof. Roberto Ceolin, MA (Conim.), MPhil, DPhil (Oxon.) was educated in Coimbra, Salamanca, Salzburg and Oxford. He wrote his doctoral thesis on the Greek verb. He has taught Latin and Greek, as well as courses on historical and synchronic linguistics, in Salamanca, Salzburg and Oxford. At present, he teaches ancient languages at the Faculty of Religious Studies and Philosophy at USJ, Macau.

The natural law theory received significant theological development in the medieval period. However, the idea of natural law goes back to the ancient Greek civilization and is blended into the Chrisitan doctrine since the beginning of the Church. This lecture will sketch the development of natural law theory in ancient Greek philosophy and the adoption of this Hellenistic idea in the early Church.

On March 19, 2021, the year 1 students of the Bachelor of Social Work Programme concluded their two-week, six-session charity sale in the University of Saint Joseph (USJ). The event was associated with Caritas Macau WelAnser Centre. The aim of the event was to improve the current living qualities of the non-Chinese community in Macau.
The event started on March 8th at an open area outside the Residential Hall during peak hours and the open space of the Don Bosco Auditorium during lunch break. Mr. Wilson Tang, leader of the event, shared that the two-week six-session event had raised slightly over MOP4,600, which was enough to cover most items that WelAnser Centre needed the most. Tang thanked all the participating USJ students and staff, who were willing to donate items and money during the event. According to Ms. Natalia Ng, the deputy leader, the Office for Student and Alumni Affairs (OSAA) as well as the Technology and Facilities Office (TFO) also provided generous assistance in supporting this event. Without the University's support, the event would never be that successfully done. The Charity Sale provided a great opportunity for social work students to learn fundraising skills.
On their field visit to the WelAnser Centre on April 8, the students brought baby formula and other groceries purchased by the proceeds to the Centre Director. This activity was embedded in the module "Social Work Casework". The students had in-depth discussions with the social workers at the Center about migrant workers' difficulties in Macau, and how they provide the services.

On April 9, 2021, Prof. Vitor Teixeira, Head of the Department of Psychology of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Education (FSSE) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), participated in the XXXI Internation Scientific Conference organized by the Association of Catholic Institutes of Education (ACISE) and affiliated of the International Federation of Catholic Universities (IFCU) to present the study made with Prof. Michael Lai, Coordinator for the Master of Social Work Programme, on “The use of robotics in the intervention with children with ASD: A pilot study with Milo”.
The main theme of the conference was “Integral Education in the Digital Era” and this communication was made in a session related to the “Special Educational Needs and New Technologies”. With this pilot study made in a partnership with the Macao Science Center and the Macau Autism Association, it was possible to identify limitations and strengths and some recommendations were made to conduct future research and to use Milo as a tool for educational and psychosocial intervention with children with ASD in Macao.
