About the talk:
The Franciscan missionary Giovanni da Montecorvino acted in Beijing during the Yuan Dynasty as one of the first ambassadors of peace and faith between China and the West. The lecture is thus focused on missionary and cultural diplomacy along the Silk Road namely by Giovanni Marignolli OFM, Francesco Sambiasi SJ, Vittorio Ricci OP, Giuseppe Castiglione SJ, Ferdinando Moggi SJ, and Francesco Folleri SJ who wanted to genuinely share their skills and enter into a sinceredialogue with the Chinese people. In midst of the pandemic crisis there seems to be an even stronger need to better understand cultural exchanges between China and the West. This would lay the ground for an urgent quest for peace and fraternity based on the inspiring example of the pioneer missionaries in China.
About the speaker:
Professor Dr. Francesco Vossilla serves as President of the Society of Studies on Giuseppe Castiglione S.J. His research and teaching is focused on Museum Studies, Philosophy of Art, Art History for various Universities in Europe and Asia including Gonzaga University, Florence, Italy and Xi'an Jiaotong University in China.
Recent publications include: F. Vossilla, The Jesuit painter and his Emperor. Some comments regarding Giuseppe Castiglione and the Qianlong Emperor, in: National Palace Museum Bulletin, vol. 49, December 2016, pp.69-88; F. Vossilla, Some notes regarding Giuseppe Castiglione and Ferdinando Moggi as architects in Beijing, in: Ferdinando Moggi (1684-1761). Architetto e gesuita fiorentino in Cina, edited by S. U. Last month, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) joined hands with Macau For Waste Reduction in hosting its first recycling pop-up event to advocate clean recycling in Macao. After its success, the pop-up station will be held on every first Saturday morning of each month.
This month, USJ invited the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM) to promote ways of handling solid waste in Macao to the students. On the 6th of January, the IACM set-up a photo exhibition and a food waste collection truck as a display.
The photo exhibition was on display on the campus from the 11th to 15th, of January, and the food waste disposal and collection truck was also displayed on the first day. This event is one of the "School Cleanup Trip" activities of the "Lunar New Year Cleanup Campaign". The purpose is to educate and promote sustainable living methods.
By introducing students to how to properly dispose of domestic waste, the current status of waste treatment and recycling in Macau, and how to use recycled materials. We hope that students can start to take practical actions not only to protect our green campus, but also to protect our community by understanding the "5 environmental protection concepts: rejection, reduction, reuse, recycling, and restoration.
This talk will provide an introduction to insects and their role in Macao’s ecosystem. Insects are the most diverse group of organisms on Earth, with around 1 million species discovered.
In Macao, almost 1,200 insect species have been recorded with some endemic species. Insects are an essential group due to their biomass and ecological roles in the ecosystem. The talk will also present some case studies on how insects are used as bioindicators of microplastic pollution, light pollution, heavy metal pollution, urban heat island effect, temperature changes and pest problems.
About the speaker
Leong Chi Man (Danny) is a young entomologist from Macao. His full devotion to the study of the local insect biodiversity, led him to the discovery of a new insect species named Leptanilla macauensis, from Colina da Ilha Verde. He holds a BSc and MPhil in Entomology and currently a PhD candidate in Biological Sciences. His present research focuses on the biodiversity of local insects and how they are affected by urbanisation. He also regularly delivers talks to promote the importance of insects and biodiversity to the public.

The unique role of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) as a family-friendly Catholic institution, was on display on the 16th of January, 2021, when members of all ages from the Cathedral Parish came to visit the USJ Ilha Verde Campus for a guided tour.
In Rector Morgan’s welcoming remarks, he noted that as a university founded by the Macao Diocese, each person in the Dioceses should view USJ as “their university”. After an interactive presentation of USJ’s history, programmes, and student life, the group then visited the University’s facilities before having light refreshments in the Residential Hall. With satisfied bellies and inspired minds, the group ended the tour knowing they are always welcome to return.
If you have a group interested in touring the Ilha Verde Campus you can contact the Student Recruitment Office anytime at sro@usj.edu.mo.

Covid-19 impacts our life and world dramatically. Scientists claim, that this situation might have been caused – among other factors – by a wrong treatment of nature by humans. Did nature put its brakes on to correct human behavior? Can we humans discover in nature how to act correctly? Does nature help us to get to know what to do? Philosophically speaking, should actions follow our being (agere sequitur esse), and is ethics fundamentally hooked up with reality and ontology? (bonum et verum convertuntur). Does the “ought” follow from the “is”, and should human life and societies comply with how things are?
After overcoming the mechanistic reductionism of the “natural fallacy”, which denies “value judgments” originating from “is” or facts, this Lecture Series attempts to trace back question of “natural goodness” (Philippa Foot), morals and good actions “in accord with reason” (S. Thomas Aquinas, S.Th. I-II.21.1.; ST I-II, 90.1). The philosophical and catholic tradition calls this the morality of the “natural law”. The lectures shed light on development and relevance of Natural Law from different philosophical and theological angles.
About the Talk & Speaker:
Prof. Chin Hei (Andrew) LEONG; Ph.D in Theology (Biblical Studies, Old Testament) / Sacrae Theologiae Doctor, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.
In this lecture, we will demonstrate how the New Law, expressed in the Sermon of the Mount and especially the Beatitudes, is the perfection and fulfilment of the Old Law (CCC 1965-1968). We will also review the use of the New Law in Catholic theological ethics, explore its significance, and critically evaluate the challenges it poses.

Macau is a famous harbour city. The ancestors made use of the unique geographical and natural resource, established a Sino-Western cultural exchange spot and a prosper trade port. Macau's quality shelter harbour attracted vessels coming from all around the world, this functionality was reflected on the maritime infra-structures either on land or at sea. Today, we can still discover the trace of our ancestors, who had bravely voyaged and embraced the ocean.
In pace with the social development, the economic transformation and the technological innovations , the landscape of Macau harbour changed. The small fishery village had became the Asia's Monte Carlo. Where there used to be arcade buildings, the people operate downstairs and live upstairs, had became tall apartments. The numerous sailing junks on water, catch wind in all directions, had became motor ships.
I was born in a fisherman's family. When I was a child, my senior family members told me a lot of folk stories, of which they sailed and harvested at sea. Macau's fishery introduced machines and diesel engines in the early 1960s, which brought a rapid modernisation to the industry. The traditional sailing ships had became outmoded within a decade. Up to date, the sailing ships had disappeared from the harbour nearly half a century.
The sailing junk ships are out of the sight of Macau people, who have little recognition to them. What's even worse is those skilled technicians and navigators are ageing and passing away. If we are not preserving the Macau sailing skills and craftsmanship, these valuable folk wisdom and traditional culture will soon be vanished.
"The Sailing Junk and Macau Traditional Handcrafts" is a both playful and educational science exhibition. Welcome and have fun exploring the daily life of a seafarer.

Christmas is a season to spread joy and care to our loved ones and neighbours. During the month of December, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) organised small donation campaign titled “USJ Macao Wish Tree” to help towards the USJ Hardship Fund. Every donor was given a wish card to write down his/her wishes and hung on the Christmas tree in appreciation of his/her good will.
The USJ Hardship Fund was established in 2020 to support students who are in exceptionally difficult situations due to the present Coronavirus Pandemic.
Thanks to the support of USJ staff and students, a total of MOP 1,823 were collected.
A group of 18 graduate students and professors from the Master in History and Heritage Studies Programme of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), went on a study tour to Yangjiang, Guangdong Province, from the 21st to 23rd of December, 2020. Led by Prof. Wah Kwan Cheng, programme coordinator, and Prof. Francisco Chan, programme instructor and president of the Macau Institute of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Relics (MICRCR), the group visited the Guangdong Maritime Silk Road Museum (commonly known as the “Nanhai One Museum”), the Yangjiang Municipal Museum, as well as the Ming period maritime trade archaeological site in Dazhouwan.
The group was welcomed by Mr. Zhang Wanxing, Director of the Yangjiang Municipal Museum and an original member of the Nanhai One excavation team, and Mr. Zhang Xuanwei, director of the Guangdong Maritime Silk Road Museum. Activities during the visit included a seminar led by our hosts on the history and archaeology of the maritime silk road, a truly rewarding experience for the students to augment their academic study with field learning.
Nanhai One refers to the Song period sunken ship excavated off the coast of Yangjiang and is now housed in the Guangdong Maritime Silk Road Museum, located on Hailing Island, as a ranked national archaeological project. Yangjiang has been considered the starting point of the maritime silk road. According to Director Zhang Wanxing, the excavation and inventory of the excavated artefacts are expected to complete in 2021. It is estimated that the number of excavated artefacts could reach 200,000 well-preserved pieces, including porcelains and other articles of extremely high value from some of the best Song period kilns.
Director Zhang Xuanwei gave the group an in-depth introduction to underwater archaeology and the related techniques for the protection of cultural relics, such as wood preservation and dehydration, desalination and restoration of porcelain and metal articles, as well as the daunting challenges in preserving the integrity of the ship hull. In addition, Prof. Francisco Chan shared an overview of the current efforts in cultural and heritage preservation in Macao. The students profited greatly from the enthusiastic interaction and exchange of experience.
The group also took an excursion to the Ming dynasty maritime trade archaeological site in Dazhouwan, Shangchuan Island. A large trove of Ming period blue-and-white porcelain pieces was discovered on the Dazhouwan site, offering invaluable physical evidence and materials to better understand the maritime trade during the Ming Dynasty.
The study trip was organised by graduate students and professors of the History and Heritage Studies Programme from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. The students plan to build on their learning and experience to cultivate and develop projects in deep cultural tourism in Macao in conjunction with USJ and other organisations in history and heritage studies.
