The Faculty of Social Sciences and Education of USJ was invited to take part in the "A March to Wellness" month at Macau Anglican College on the 16th of March, 2022.
Prof. Jacky Ho and Prof. Andrew Ng from the Department of Social Work of FSSE, conducted an interactive discussion on the topic of "Be Good to Yourself" with a group of 282 junior high school students.
This sharing aimed to raise awareness of self-care and wellbeing in the face of personal and social challenges through games and discussion. Students actively participated, and tools on self-care and wellness were provided at the end of the session. This form of collaboration is part of the "ConnectUs" Initiative and demonstrates USJ's commitment to serving its beloved community's needs and care for our youth.
On Saturday, 12th of March 2022, a delegation from the General Association of Chinese Students of Macau (AECM) led by Mr. Jacky Mio, the vice-president of the 61st Executive Committee, visited the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) for a campus tour and meeting. The delegation was warmly received by the members of the 7th University of Saint Joseph Students’ Association (USJSA.
The campus tour was led by the chairman, António Ambrose and vice-chairman of the Executive Committee, Ding Tam and Maximas Wu. The delegation visited the Library, Gym, Students’ Lounge, various offices, Digital Fabrication Lab, Don Bosco Auditorium and the Rooftop Garden. After the tour, the delegation held a meeting at the Students’ Lounge.
In the meeting, chairman António thanked the AECM on behalf of the USJSA for their continuous support, and the Vice-chairman Tam and vice-president Mio of the AECM exchanged the mission statements of their respective organisations.
Vice-chairman Wu remarked that the cabinet of the USJSA was passionate yet inexperienced; therefore, it was a relatively tough start for the team. Vice-president Mio reassured that the AECM would give their most extensive support to the USJSA. The two parties then exchanged thoughts about the academic challenges posed by the pandemic and future inter-university collaborations.
Among the delegation of the AECM were Ms. Ng Ka Kei and Ms. Tou Ka I, Students Affairs Coordinators; Mr. Ho Tin Hou, President of the Academic Standing Committee for undergraduates; Mr. U Ion Leong, Executive President of the Academic Standing Committee for undergraduates; Ms. Celina Delgado de Sousa and Ms. Li Iao In, Ministers of the AECM.
The School of Education’s (SED) Year 1 Bachelor of Education (BEd) students hosted 35 kindergarten students from Ilha Verde School in a storytelling activity on the 15th March at University of Saint Joseph's (USJ) Kent Wong Gallery.
Under the guise of Promoting Multiple Intelligences through Reading and Play, the BEd Year 1 students introduced techniques to demonstrate how books and activities can stimulate different learning styles and imagination, as well as increase children's vocabulary, story comprehension, and high-level thinking skills. In addition, the event provided pre-service teachers with an opportunity to develop storytelling techniques, create original materials, and design story-related activities.
The storytelling session is one of many community outreach initiatives to contribute to schools and the Macao community in carrying out the Faculty of Social Science and Education’s (FSSE) mission to promote powerful education to inspire and nurture intellectual enquiry and whole-person development.
The event, organised by the Dean of FSSE, Prof Elisa Monteiro and Head of the SED, Prof Kiiko Ikegami, is hoped to bring the joy of reading to students from an early age. A book drive was held by the SED in the lead up to the event and the generous donations allowed each participant to depart with a great learning experience and a book to encourage continued reading at home.
The mission of the Jesuits is to place ‘great emphasis on forming “people for others”. Students are engaged in the process of exploring the distinctive and constructive ways in which their knowledge and talents will best serve society’ (AJCU, 2021). In other words, the Jesuits’ goal of higher education is to nourish students to help others and to make this world a better place to live beyond the boundaries of nations. Similarly, Cardinal John Henry Newman, an impactful Catholic educator in the 19th Century, argued in his most after-sought book, the Idea of a University (Newman, 2008), the aim of a university is to create a true academic community where scholars and students can interact and learn knowledge from each other. I argue that Newman's ideal aims of a university have been achieved by the Jesuit universities with regard to universal knowledge and liberal education. On the contrary, the unique goal of Jesuit higher education on "becoming men and women for others" in the Asian context is essential, but it was not mentioned by Newman.

"Visions of Confucius in the classroom of Portuguese as a Foreign Language in Macau: between tradition and modernity"
ABOUT THE TALK:
Starting from the lecturer’s own reflection on her/his teaching practice, we seek to understand the role of the beliefs implicated in the teaching of the Portuguese language in Macau, moreover the ones that lie at the origin of proposals defending the use of specific teaching methodologies targeting Chinese learners. The paramount differences between Portuguese culture and Chinese culture, and the legacy of the Confucian principles, at work in MASR educational system, lie at the foundation of these beliefs. Therefore, we aim at understanding the validity of the beliefs that emerged from this setting, which implies to acknowledge MSAR socio-political and educational context, and also to ponder the current influence of Confucian principles in the act of profiling the Chinese learner. This issue brought us to conduct a case study in several MSAR educational institutions, whose results will be presented at this lecture.

Rector’s Remarks for USJ Career Fair 2022
It is a particular pleasure to contribute a few words to the event page for the 2022 USJ Career Fair. This year we are honoured to be co-organising this fair, sponsored by DSEDJ, with the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Economic and Trade Promotion Association.
Each year, as a cohort of students comes to the end of its degree or diploma programmes, minds naturally turn to what next. The 444 students who graduated from USJ in 2021 went on to a variety of careers or further education. With over 80% of our graduating students finding exciting opportunities for work or further study, USJ leads the field in Macau. This year we will have over 450 graduating students and I know that they will be excited by the variety and scope of positions available to them. I also know that prospective employers will find them to be extremely well prepared for the workplace.
The Rev’d Professor Stephen Morgan, RectorMarch 2022

Mangrove forests, or mangroves, are among the most valuable and richest ecosystems on Earth and an important coastal natural treasure. They protect coastal areas from sea-level rise and extreme weather events. They help to mitigate climate change, improve water quality and harbor a wide variety of flora and fauna, in addition to their socio-economic and cultural relevance. Mangroves are considered transition environments between terrestrial and marine ecosystems, influenced by sea and rivers. Macao is home to a thriving mangrove forest that stretches for about 4 km off the coast of Taipa-Cotai.
The Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) has been doing extensive work in the local community on environmental awareness and the protection of these aquatic habitats. Now, this work is going international.
After being presented in the University and more than ten schools in Macao, the interactive Mangroves exhibition, under the coordination of Prof. Karen Tagulao, Programme Coordinator for the Bachelor of Environmental Sciences of ISE/USJ, is being presented in Portugal, on the 15th anniversary of the Centro de Monitorização e Interpretação Ambiental (CMIA) from the 22nd of March to the 2nd of September 2022 in Vila do Conde (Porto).
ISE/USJ hopes to continue to inspire children and adults in Macao and beyond, to better protect this important "treasure" that belongs to all of us.
On Saturday, 5th of March, 2022, the Macao Institute of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Relics (MICRCR) and the Library of the University of Saint Josep (USJ) jointly held a workshop on "Principles and Methods of Anoxic Disinfestation Technology" at USJ Ilha Verde Campus.
The workshop included theoretical explanations and practical demonstrations to give participants a better understanding of book pest control.
Macao's climate is warm and humid, and the problem of insect pests in books is serious and prominent. The USJ Library deals with thousands of books and paper documents affected by insect pests every year, therefore pest control work is vital.
Last year, the USJ Library installed the "EXPM Anoxia Disinfestation Bubble Kit" from Portugal, which is now in operation. The books and archives in the library are processed according to international standards, and the results are very satisfactory. By operating this system, Mr. Francisco Chan, the president of MICRCR, explained Macao's common pest problems and physical control methods to the participants and shared the principles and precautions of anoxic treatment to pests.
Through the workshop, participants learned about the efficiency of the equipment, pest control steps, and how to use physical methods to treat the pests that destroy books and paper documents.
The University of Saint Joseph would like to invite you to the USJ 25th Anniversary - Thanksgiving Mass, presided by the Most Reverend Chancellor Dom Stephen Lee, Bishop of Macao, at the Cathedral of the Nativity of Our Lady, on Friday, 18th of March 2022, at 10am.
USJ is rooted in a long tradition of intercultural exchange that has been the hallmark of Catholic higher education in Macao since the College of Saint Paul, founded in 1594. “Scientia et Virtus” (Knowledge and Virtue), the motto of the Diocese of Macao, points its academic community to a harmonious pursuit of truth and the common good for the benefit of humanity, the Chinese people and Macao’s multicultural society.
Since its establishment 25 years ago, USJ’s character as a high-quality institution of higher education has flourished, and more than 7,500 students from over 60 different countries of various areas of study have graduated. A total of 1,209 students are currently enrolled in more than 30 programmes offered by four faculties and two research institutes.
It is the patronising mission of professional teachers to "preach and teach". Teachers must have the professional ethics of "learning to be a teacher and performing well as a model for the youngsters".
The content of the public lecture explicates the implication of teachers' professional ethics from the four aspects: practical teaching, communicating with students, working with colleagues, personal development and certified appearance. As long as they have strict requirements on themselves in these four aspects and can continuously improve, every teacher can become an “exceptional teacher”.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:Dr. Kuok Sio Lai, PhD Education
Dr. Kuok has engaged in education in Macau for decades. She taught in secondary schools and tertiary institutions in the early days, and later transferred to the public sector, where she successively served as the deputy director of the Higher Education Bureau and the deputy director of the Education and Youth Bureau. After retirement, she is still enthusiastic about education, serving as a member of the Higher Education Commission of the Macau Special Administrative Region Government, the Professional Committee of Teaching Staff and the Catholic Education Commission of the Diocese, and school board in two secondary schools.

On Saturday, 26th of February, 2022, students of the Master of Environmental Sciences and Management (MESM) visited Kashun Environmental Protection Technology Co, Ltd., specifically their Plastic Recycling Facility in Macao.
The company recycles in Macao 10,000 Water Bottles (e.g., Spring) and about 40 tonnes of Big blue and green Garbage bins per year by making pellets (granulat) from them, from which new plastic products can be made. This method realizes the circular economy.
Plastic recycling can conserve precious natural resources (e.g., oil), protect the environment from plastic pollution, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and minimize dependence on landfills/incinerators. The global recycling rate of plastic in 2015 was only 19.5%.
The students were accompanied by Mr. Warren Man Ho Li, who teaches MES104 Pollution and Waste Management, and Prof. Franz Gassner, who teaches MES105 Environmental Management in this Master Programme.
A new year is opening up which offers us a new opportunity to deepen our Contemplative journey, familiarize ourselves with the Psalms, and try to grasp some key insights of the Gospel of John. As we are halfway through the journey during the Ignatian Year we may also wish to make an evaluation about progress and setbacks during our itinerary in the different areas such as a faithful daily practice of Contemplation, regular Contemplative reading of the Psalms, and the Gospel of John, finally: insights on how Contemplation may inspire serving leadership.
Instruction for “Contemplation & Leadership” in the Ignatian Year for March 2022 (15 March 2022)
Psalm 112:
The Psalm 112 describes the firm confidence of being rooted and grounded in the trust in the Lord. It involves a liberation from any fears. This attitude gives raise to a profound happiness which leads to a special attention and generosity to the poor.
John 14:1-21:
John 14:1-21 echoes also the attitude of complete fearlessness due to a deep faith in God. Chapter 14 is also focused on the departure of Jesus who gradually reveals himself to his disciples who have difficulty to grasp the meaning of his words. Through faith those who are close to Jesus discover him as “Way, Truth and Life”. A key sentence in v. 13 refers to a key element of the Contemplative prayer: “Whatever you ask in my name I will grant you.” With this confidence in invoking his name we trust that the Lord of peace will restore peace in the war-torn countries of the world and those regions which suffer bitterly from the consequences of devastating war.

string(3041) "ABOUT THE SERIES:
Can we know that God exists? Is there evidence for God? Is there a conflict between science and religion? What constitutes good evidence for a religious claim? This lecture series explores answers to these questions.
ABOUT THE TALK:
The next lecture of our Series "Evidence & God" will focus on practical moral life, specifically the role of nature in human action: "Nature as Guide: Wittgenstein and the Renewal of Moral Theology." The lecture brings the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein into conversations with contemporary Catholic moral theology and questions of human action. The lecture will look out for the transformation of human nature and action through God’s Word, showing how Wittgenstein’s understanding of human practices can shed light on the life of grace in human action as a trace of evidence of God's presence.

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) held its 2021/2022 Admissions Scholarships and Fellowships Award Presentation on the 24th of February, 2022.
Twenty-eight admissions scholarships and fellowships were awarded during the presentation.
Dr. Alejandro Salcedo Garcia, Administrator of USJ, attended the presentation and encouraged the recipients to make the most of their opportunity to study at USJ and be generous and give back to society to help people in need when they have the ability in the future.
On the 28th of February 2022, the USJ Faculty of Social Sciences and Education (FSSE) conducted an open forum as part of the "Connecting Society" initiatives at the Saint Paul School high school in Macao.
Prof. Jacky Ho, Head of the Department of Social Work, and Prof. Andrew Ng from the department of social work presented and shared their knowledge and insight on the topic of "Visioning a Better Society" to 161 students, intending to engage them in thinking and dialogue on the different social issues currently happening in the local society and the world. The professors also hoped to inspire them to choose their path based on value and altruism.
The sharing session was well received and the students were engaging. This forum will continue throughout the year and is aligned with the mission of the University in bringing positive impact to our society and to the young generation of Macao.
FSSE hopes to share more with local primary and secondary school students, to jointly nurture the next generation with greater social responsibility for Macao.
Child protection is never a one-person job but requires the collaboration of the whole community. The Cradle of Hope Association organised a consultation meeting about child protection with local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) on February 28th at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ). The event was co-organised by the University of Saint Joseph, the Good Shepherd Center, and the International Ladies Club of Macau.
Prof. Jacky Ho, the director of Macao Observatory for Social Development and Head of Department of Social Work of USJ, Prof. Helen Liu, Research Coordinator for the Faculty of Social Sciences and Education (FSSE) of USJ, Mr. Ben Cheang from the Department of Innovative Social Work of the City University of Macau, Psychotherapist Ms. Donatella Maschio and numerous of other frontline child protection organisations attended the meeting, including Evangelize china fellowship, inc. Fellowship orphanage, La De Jovens de Mong-Ha, S.K.H. Northern District Youth Service Team, S.K.H. Astor Shore, Associacao de Reabilitacao de Toxicodependentes de Macau, the Christian New Life Fellowship (in Macau), and the UGAMM Youth Service Team.
Before the meeting started, Ms. Marjory, President of Cradle of Hope Association, presented a souvenir to Prof. Jacky Ho, who received on behalf of USJ.
Prof. Jacky Ho gave a welcoming speech, thanking all the organisations for their efforts in the field, and expressed that the Department of Social Work of USJ is willing to support frontline workers in practice and academically. He then introduced Prof. Helen Liu, who has been working on Family Research for a long time and believed that with her rich knowledge and experience, she would be able to assist the industry.
During the meeting, Ms. Donatella Maschio shared the results of a survey she had completed in children's homes of workers' attitudes towards child protection. The results showed that there was a general awareness among the workers. However, the survey found that most workers got the relevant knowledge from outside the organisation, demonstrating the importance of organising relevant training courses for workers within the organisation.
Mr. Ben Cheang shared the current policies, practices, and experiences of child protection services in Hong Kong. There are four principles and 16 objectives that need to be followed in providing services in Hong Kong's residential institutions for children and youth. In recent years, the organisations have also reviewed their service processes venues to see if the service provided can be improved to achieve the goal of child protection.
At the end of the meeting, Prof. Helen led the panel discussion. Representatives from NGOs shared the problems they had encountered, how the organisations responded according to the laws and regulations, and the internal procedures or guidelines of the organisations. Participants mentioned the difficulties in collaborating with the government departments, the situation that children are returning to the institutions due to repeated abuse, the needs of SEN (special educational needs) children and those who are taking psychotropic drugs, etc. As for the discussion on the internal training courses and working guidelines, some institutions had clear working guidelines. Most of them agreed that annual training courses are essential for new workers. It could also be a refresher for those working for years to enhance the overall awareness and sensitivity to child protection.
The organisers and co-organisers hope to collect the opinions and feedback from the frontline through this meeting and invite relevant units or stakeholders in child protection work, such as social welfare, police, medical and education systems, etc., to join the roundtable meeting in April for further detailed discussion.
The unique role of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) as a family-friendly Catholic higher education institution was on display once again on the 27th of February, 2022. Around 210 pupils, together with their parents/guardians and teachers from the Sunday School of Saint Francis Xavier Parish (Mong Ha), came to visit the Ilha Verde Campus for a guided tour.
The tour was supported by Colégio Diocesano de São José 6 (CDSJ6) and USJ staff members. Mr. Ben Lei from the Office for Student and Alumni Affairs gave a presentation to the visitors at the Auditório Centenário de Fátima about USJ’s history, programmes, and student life before visiting the Holy Cross Chapel.
During the Chapel visit, USJ staff members introduced the architectural design of the building and the Mass schedule. Afterward, the Vigário Paroquial and one of USJ Chaplains, Father Rafael Gemelli Vigolo MCCJ, led a prayer with psalm and hymns.
On behalf of USJ, Mr. Ben Lei received a gratitude card and donation from the Sunday School. After the praise and blessing of the Lord, the families then enjoyed the sunshine with outdoor photo shooting.
