The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) was represented at the prestigious 2026 World Digital Education Conference in Hangzhou, China, following an arrangement facilitated by the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) of the Macao SAR, with Deputy Director Ting Sio Hong leading the Macao delegation. Dr. Teresa Loong, Vice-Rector for Student Affairs of USJ, and Prof. Alessandro Lampo, Head of the Department of Business Studies at the Faculty of Business and Law of USJ, attended the conference held from 11 to 12 May, 2026.

Themed “AI+Education: Transformation, Development & Governance”, the high-level forum was organised by China’s Ministry of Education and the Zhejiang Provincial People’s Government. According to official figures released by the Ministry of Education, the conference brought together more than 850 guests from 65 countries and regions, including over 500 international participants, making it the largest and most internationally engaged edition to date.

In his keynote address, Han Zheng, the Vice President of the People’s Republic of China, emphasised that digital education is key to modernising education and building a learning society. He called for people-centred, inclusive, and equitable AI development, promoting “AI for good” and deeper international cooperation to ensure technology serves learners’ holistic growth.

The conference served as a platform for examining how artificial intelligence is driving systemic change and high-quality development in education globally. Attendees explored how AI can enhance learning outcomes, ensure educational equity, and prepare students for a future shaped by intelligent technologies.

Beyond the main plenary sessions, the conference featured the Global Digital Education Achievement Exhibition, where new technologies and pedagogical models were on display. Thematic site visits to leading educational institutions and tech companies in Hangzhou provided delegates with exposure to successful “AI+Education” integration in practice.

Speakers at the conference highlighted essential AI-era competencies such as critical thinking, creativity, ethical reasoning, and lifelong learning. Vice-Rector Loong and Prof. Lampo’s participation highlights USJ’s commitment to digital pedagogy and global discourse, aligning with the University’s graduate attributes of holistic development, ethical responsibility, and global citizenship. By fostering these human-centred capabilities, USJ continues to support Macao students’ development and their integration with the wider national context.
