About the Talk
To understand brains we need to start from the simplest animals: take for example the worm C-Elegans with only 350 neurons, able to look for food, remember food locations and mate. Brains originally evolved for movement: consider as an example phototaxis, the movement away or towards a stimulus or light which can be easily implemented with a robot by directly connecting sensors and motors. This behaviours are considered to be reactive a direct mapping from sensors to actuation. You will consider how we can build up more complex behaviours introducing learning and memory into play.
You will be able to add more complex layers of behaviour following the structure of the Distributed Adaptive Control (DAC, biologically based control Architecture developed at SPECS). DAC assumes that behaviour is organized in layers from reactive, to adaptive (simplest learning) and contextual (including memory and learning). You will learn how to implement using robots a series of increasingly complex animal tasks that go in the direction of solving a general foraging task following the structure of a neuro-biological control strategy.
About the Speaker
Marti Sanchez-Fibla is a researcher in the laboratory SPECS (Synthetic Perceptive, Emotive and Cognitive Systems) of the University Pompeu Fabra (UPF). He has a PhD in computer science by the University Politécnica of Cataluña (UPC) and has realized his PhD in the Artificial Intelligence Institute (IIIA) of the CSIC. His research focuses on neurorobotics and sensorimotor learning. His interests in science communication, and also in the relation between art and science bring him to realize the Teatronika project mixing performance arts and robotics.

Los Hongos (Colombia) - The Mushroom 蘑菇 (哥倫比亞)
Date: 6th September 2016
Time: 18:30

Cali street artists Ras and Calvin are good friends and collaborators despite hailing from disparate backgrounds. While one takes art classes, the other steals paint from his job in order to tag whatever surfaces he can find. Inspired by the Arab Spring protests, the pair bands together with a group of graffiti artists in order to paint a tribute to the student demonstrators. Oscar Ruiz Navia’s second feature could be termed a coming-of-age film, but
Los Hongo sheads in unexpected directions: while possibilities of hooking up abound, the pair’s mutual interest in making a statement that might also push forward new ideas in their own country expands what we usually see in characters growing up on-screen. This moment in the lives of two kids figuring it out encompasses all the possibilities: family, friends, sex, art, and, when they least expect it, the prospect of doing something of value. Full of color and great music,
Los Hongos comprises a charming and vibrant portrait of a young, lively Colombia.
Ecuador: The Royal Tour (Ecuador) - 總統帶你漫遊厄瓜多爾 (厄瓜多爾)
Date: 13th September 2016
Time: 18:30

Peter Greenberg received a royal tour from the President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa. For an entire week, Mr. Correa became the ultimate guide, showcasing the visual gems that his country has to offer. They took four camera crews along as they swam with piranha in the Amazon rainforest, went whale watching off the coast of Manta, shopped like a local in a rural town in the Andes Mountains, returned to the President’s hometown of Guayaquil and the school he attended, visited a cacao plantation (aka chocolate) farm in Cacao, and went diving with sharks in the Galápagos Islands.

Shenzhen, July 1, 2016__The American Academy in China (AAC) is organising an exhibition and a symposium in Shenzhen that examine one of the critical issues facing China today—the changing relationship between the country’s expanding cities and declining villages. Entitled “Rural-Urban Re-inventions: Bridging the Gap Between China’s Cities and Countryside,” the events will bring together work done by a broad range of architects, academics, businesspeople, and thinkers from around the world.
The exhibition will open on July 29 at the Shenzhen Design Center (No. 8 Zhongkang Rd, Shangmeilin, Futian District) and will present the work of academic and professional organizations from Asia, the United States, and Europe. These are: the University of Southern California (USC); the University of Pennsylvania; Harvard Graduate School of Design; the University of California, Berkeley; Rice University; Syracuse University; the University of Hong Kong; the University of Saint Joseph, Macau; the Architectural Association; ETH, Zurich; l’Ecole Nationale Superieure d’Architecture de Saint-Etienne; Stefan Al; BASE Bejing (Robert Mangurian/Mary-Ann Ray); DnA (Xu Tiantian); Urbanus; gp/s (Gary Paige Studio); Thomas Daniell; and Michael Sorkin Studio.
The symposium will take place on July 30 at the campus of developer AVIC Legend (Tea House, Building #2, 1F, AVIC Shahe Industry Area, Qiaoxiang Road, Nanshan District), which is one of the event’s sponsors, along with Robert A.M. Stern Architects and NBBJ. Participants will be: Stefan Al (University of Pennsylvania), Ole Bouman (Shekou Design Museum), Aric Chen (M+ Museum), Thomas Daniell (University of Saint Joseph, Macau), David Erdman (University of Hong Kong), Jianxiang He and Ying Jiang (O-Office Architects), Doreen Liu (NODE), Xiaodu Liu (Urbanus), Qingyun Ma (USC), Gary Paige (USC), Clifford Pearson (AAC), Michael Sorkin, Nan Xiao (AVIC Legend), Tiantian Xu (DnA), and Marisa Yiu and Eric Schuldenfrei (ESKYIU).
“Although more than half of China’s population still lives in rural villages, younger generations are migrating in huge numbers to major cities, seeking economic opportunities,” says Clifford Pearson, AAC director. As a result, cities are forced to cope with severe pressures on their housing and economic infrastructures, while villages look for new economic and social models to sustain declining numbers of residents. Schools of architecture and research-based design firms are currently exploring new models of sustainable development, as well as new architectural prototypes that can be employed in rural areas. “Our exhibition and symposium will show some of the innovative approaches designers are using to tackle the twin challenges facing China’s metropolitan and rural areas,” adds Pearson.
Established under the auspices of USC’s School of Architecture, the American Academy in China strives to create cross-cultural collaboration between the United States and China by promoting dialogue around design, the built environment, and the arts.
For more information, contact Clifford Pearson at: cliff.pearson@gmail.com

Macao is integrated in a larger picture of the New Normal Development, the China national 13th five year plan, as well with the strategic vision of One Belt, One Road. The plan touches all important sectors; Urban Planning, Health, Education, Tourism, etc. The round table is an unique opportunity to be more familiarize with the plan as well to collect opinions and suggestion that can be submitted to the government (end of June deadline). Citizens have an important role in the future development of the city and society. This is a good opportunity for giving that contribution."

About the talk:
In the past teachers’ classroom management skills used to rely on individual teaching experience and intuition. During the 20
th century many teachers viewed classroom management as maintaining classroom order and addressing students’ misbehaviour. However, research has shown that classroom management needs to be interwoven with instruction, and should be preventing rather than responding to misbehaviour. Teachers have better options than imposing rules and resorting to punishment and rewards to prevent off-task behaviour. Although teachers are responsible for providing an effective learning environment, not all means are equally appropriate to get students on track. Teachers should focus on teaching pro-social skills and self-discipline to students rather than repress “problematic” ones, which in fact hardly contributes to change behaviour.
The talk analyses the reasons for students’ misbehaviour at classroom and school level, stressing the role of teachers and schools on helping students to develop a pro-social behaviour throughout their lifetime. Are schools satisfying the psychological and social needs of students? Are teachers asking students to do relevant, appropriate, and reasonable tasks? Are all students treated with the same dignity that is conceded to teachers, staff, and school administrators?
