Shenzhen, July 1, 2016__The American Academy in China (AAC) is organising an exhibition and a symposium in Shenzhen that examine one of the critical issues facing China today—the changing relationship between the country’s expanding cities and declining villages. Entitled “Rural-Urban Re-inventions: Bridging the Gap Between China’s Cities and Countryside,” the events will bring together work done by a broad range of architects, academics, businesspeople, and thinkers from around the world.
The exhibition will open on July 29 at the Shenzhen Design Center (No. 8 Zhongkang Rd, Shangmeilin, Futian District) and will present the work of academic and professional organizations from Asia, the United States, and Europe. These are: the University of Southern California (USC); the University of Pennsylvania; Harvard Graduate School of Design; the University of California, Berkeley; Rice University; Syracuse University; the University of Hong Kong; the University of Saint Joseph, Macau; the Architectural Association; ETH, Zurich; l’Ecole Nationale Superieure d’Architecture de Saint-Etienne; Stefan Al; BASE Bejing (Robert Mangurian/Mary-Ann Ray); DnA (Xu Tiantian); Urbanus; gp/s (Gary Paige Studio); Thomas Daniell; and Michael Sorkin Studio.
The symposium will take place on July 30 at the campus of developer AVIC Legend (Tea House, Building #2, 1F, AVIC Shahe Industry Area, Qiaoxiang Road, Nanshan District), which is one of the event’s sponsors, along with Robert A.M. Stern Architects and NBBJ. Participants will be: Stefan Al (University of Pennsylvania), Ole Bouman (Shekou Design Museum), Aric Chen (M+ Museum), Thomas Daniell (University of Saint Joseph, Macau), David Erdman (University of Hong Kong), Jianxiang He and Ying Jiang (O-Office Architects), Doreen Liu (NODE), Xiaodu Liu (Urbanus), Qingyun Ma (USC), Gary Paige (USC), Clifford Pearson (AAC), Michael Sorkin, Nan Xiao (AVIC Legend), Tiantian Xu (DnA), and Marisa Yiu and Eric Schuldenfrei (ESKYIU).
“Although more than half of China’s population still lives in rural villages, younger generations are migrating in huge numbers to major cities, seeking economic opportunities,” says Clifford Pearson, AAC director. As a result, cities are forced to cope with severe pressures on their housing and economic infrastructures, while villages look for new economic and social models to sustain declining numbers of residents. Schools of architecture and research-based design firms are currently exploring new models of sustainable development, as well as new architectural prototypes that can be employed in rural areas. “Our exhibition and symposium will show some of the innovative approaches designers are using to tackle the twin challenges facing China’s metropolitan and rural areas,” adds Pearson.
Established under the auspices of USC’s School of Architecture, the American Academy in China strives to create cross-cultural collaboration between the United States and China by promoting dialogue around design, the built environment, and the arts.

About the talk:
In the past teachers’ classroom management skills used to rely on individual teaching experience and intuition. During the 20
th century many teachers viewed classroom management as maintaining classroom order and addressing students’ misbehaviour. However, research has shown that classroom management needs to be interwoven with instruction, and should be preventing rather than responding to misbehaviour. Teachers have better options than imposing rules and resorting to punishment and rewards to prevent off-task behaviour. Although teachers are responsible for providing an effective learning environment, not all means are equally appropriate to get students on track. Teachers should focus on teaching pro-social skills and self-discipline to students rather than repress “problematic” ones, which in fact hardly contributes to change behaviour.
The talk analyses the reasons for students’ misbehaviour at classroom and school level, stressing the role of teachers and schools on helping students to develop a pro-social behaviour throughout their lifetime. Are schools satisfying the psychological and social needs of students? Are teachers asking students to do relevant, appropriate, and reasonable tasks? Are all students treated with the same dignity that is conceded to teachers, staff, and school administrators?

A collaboration between architecture students from the University of Saint Joseph and media students from City University of Hong Kong, the Cloud Pavilion is a temporary structure located at the edge of Sai Van Lake. The tensegrity structure is constructed from bamboo rods, steel cables, and fabric panels, and enlivened by a computer-controlled light-and-sound show. By applying advanced digital design techniques to vernacular construction materials, the pavilion is intended as a link between Macau’s historical building traditions and contemporary cityscape. The opening night will feature live performances by a number of Macau-based artists.

ABOUT THE TALK
The sound environment is increasingly more relevant in contemporary culture. It is a ‘picture’ of a place, an X-ray of its character and activities, shapeless and amorphous, whilst full of meanings and subtleties. The research project of exploratory nature presented, emerge from the desire to find ways to use soundscapes as source material for significant artistic achievements. It studies the capture and catalog the sound ambient, its ecological decryption and specifically in its approach to artistic application. As such the proposal is an artistic reinterpretation of sonic material that surrounds us, and how it influences us.

ABOUT THE TALK
Territory has always been, and for sure will be, a key asset for mankind. Since remote times man tried to understand how to take most advantages (defense, nourishing, leisure, etc) from what surrounded him. We all are Geographers!
At the same time, territory is a man-made product reflecting decisions and actions taken. The increasing pace of society change and its complexification led to situations where man did not had that ability to foreseen the consequence of its actions. Missing or inaccurate data can partially explain it.
In the last decade technology evolution enable the establishment of new support decision tools and also a cultural change regarding geographic data.
This lecture will address the importance and increasing power of (un)Volunteered Geographic Information and Spatial Data Infrastructures, as new paradigms to produce, manage and explore spatial data towards decision support.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
PhD in Geography and Regional Planning - New Technologies in Geography, Assistant Professor and head of Geography and Regional Planning Department at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and researcher at CICS.NOVA - Interdisciplinary Centre for Social Sciences, coordinating the research group on socio-spatial modelling and planning.
Main research and competencies are in the field of Geographic Information Science and Systems, namely spatial data modelling, Geocomputation, Spatial Data Infrastructures, Cadastre, and GIS in organizations."

ABOUT THE TALK
1. HONG KONG’S BIG BANG: THE STORY BEHIND THE DISCOVERY OF HONG KONG’S SUPERVOLCANO (Dr. Roderick J. Sewell)
The talk will describe the clues that led to the discovery, what parts of Hong Kong are underlain by the volcano, what and where are its structural components, how the volume of the eruption was estimated, how the eruption might have unfolded, and what would have been the local and global effects.
2. GEOTECHNICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL APPLICATIONS OF GEOPHYSICS METHODS IN HONG KONG (Professor Chan Lung-Sang 陳龍生教授)
Geophysical surveys in an urban setting are subject to anthropogenic noise, electromagnetic interference and traffic and other regulatory constraints. In spite of these limitations, a large range of geophysical techniques have been applied in Hong Kong in geological, geotechnical and environmental investigations. Among these techniques are surface and downhole seismic, GPR, microgravity, resistivity, magnetic, EM, acoustic, infrared thermography, gamma density, and gamma-ray spectroscopy. The speaker will give an overview of Hong Kong’s experiences with the application of the geophysics methods and discuss the applicability and efficacy of the methods for resolving various geotechnical problems.
