Macau Daily report, April 9. The Macau HEI Committee for the Promotion of Gender Equality, which was set up by representatives from all ten higher education institutions in Macau last September, has developed a Policy Framework for the Promotion of Gender Equality and the Prevention of Sexual Harassment. The Committee recommends that the HEIs may take into consideration of their needs when they make use of this policy framework in developing their own polices. Recently the Committee discussed the Working Procedures for the Handling of Sexual Harassment Incidents that had been drafted by Prof. Vincent Yang, Pro-Rector of USJ.
According to Pro-Rector Yang, the Committee formed by the ten HEIs has received significant support from GAES, which demonstrates that the MSAR government pays attention to the protection of gender equality and encourages the HEIs to take effective measures in dealing with any incident of sexual harassment. The policy framework above was jointly developed by Prof. Ieong, Director of Rector’s Office of UM and Pro-Rector Yang of USJ based on the policies and experience of these two universities. The Committee has had detailed discussions of the framework and decided to adopt it. The framewok includes the basic principles and standards of gender equality in HEIs, as well as the responsibilities and measures for the prevention and investigation of sexual harassment. The Committee will recommend the Procedures to the HEIs as a document of guidance or reference for the development of their internal procedures.

About the Talk
China, now the second largest economy in the world, has been trying to liberalize its financial markets and adopt a more open and competitive environment for investors. Both stock and bond markets in China developed rapidly in the past twenty years, and played a significant role in its impressive GDP growth. The country’s financial markets are deepening, foreign investment keeps pouring in, and capital is flowing outward.
Yet a long-closed economy—even one with more than $3 trillion in foreign reserves—can’t swing open its doors overnight. China’s domestic financial markets will have to deepen and develop further, and become more effective and efficient. At the same time, its relative isolated market with barriers that prevent free capital flow will have to diminish gradually, and the country must win the trust of global investors. Continued reform in China, coupled with its connection with Hong Kong, an established international financial center with a close cultural and geographical tie with China, could make the country one of the world’s most influential players of capital in the years ahead.
Professor Wayne Yu from the City University of Hong Kong, a reputable scholar and practitioner who has witnessed and researched the development of financial markets in China and Hong Kong, will share his profound insight and foresight of the financial markets in China and Hong Kong to the students USJ and participants of "UCP International Week-China" program from Católica Porto Business School on April 18, 2016.
About the Speaker
Prof Wayne Yu, of the Department of Economics and Finance and Department of Accountancy, is the Assistant Dean (Executive Education) of College of Business at City University of Hong Kong (CityU).
Professor Yu is a reputable scholar who published numerous papers in the leading journals in finance. He is also holding the position of Examiner for Hong Kong Securities Institute and Hong Kong Society of Accountants, and conducted Product Demand Analysis for the Federal Government of Canada. He received his PhD in Finance from University of Alberta, and served as Associate Director of Graduate School of Business at Hong Kong Polytechnic University before he joined CityU.

string(1723) "On the 16th and 17th of April (previous Saturday and Sunday), Macau University of Science and Technology had host The Supernova English Debate Tournament 2016. This is a novice tournament that had debaters from institutions of Macau, Hong Kong and China, which invited very intelligent judges including the best debater of Asia and the WUDC tournament’s highest speaker point debater.
USJ EDS had sent Andrew Jong and Carman Kuok to parti
cipate in the tournament as debaters. Furthermore, myself and Victory Igbinobaro (the president of USJ EDS) had participated as adjudicators and Mukeh Kanagbo (USJ EDS coach) was invited to be the adjudication core.
Unfortunately, USJ team did not break into semi-finals, but they had learned a lot from the tournament. Andrew, as a first timer to debate tournament, learned a lot about how tournaments work, matters from different motions and techniques. Carman, on the other hand also learned a lot about different techniques in debating. Both of these debaters are going to the UADC tournament in Thailand, which is coming up in the end of May.
Once again, thank you for all the support from USJ. We ensure our biggest effort and contribution to the USJ EDS. More competitions and tournaments will be coming up soon, including the 2nd AP and UADC.

ABOUT THE TALK
Think of the city and all material around as a post-natural ‘augmented reality’, describing an overlap and constructed perception of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are supplemented by computational automation and digital sensory input.
This environment creates immersive experiences and information empowerment of the individual alongside the potential for intrinsic top-down control mechanisms for our hybrid civic environments.
The history of such spaces ranges from the baroque (constructed singular central viewing position, early panoramas, etc); modern cinematic constructs; and today’s sublime laser-point cloud scans and participatory MMORPG ego shooter games in social networks. It is here, within this postmodern digital simulacra where everybody has become part of Borges’ fable of the map that supersedes reality, where we exist and pose the hypothesis of an augmented architecture as an all encompassing interior state, feed-back controlled and choreographed as a scripted environment.
Over the past three years, studio tobias klein has worked on defining a contemporary architectural response to today's environment dominated by the non-physical, the ephemeral data streams and the virtual super-saturation of augmented reality.
In this simulacra we inhabit, we design spatial interfaces between the virtual and actual – exuberant augmentations. We believe that today’s shift in technological perception entices a shift in the architectural profession. If ignored, this re-articulation will render us bystanders into the most important evolution in spatial design since the development of the central perspective in renaissance times.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Tobias Klein works in the fields of architecture, art, design and interactive media installation. His work generates a syncretism of contemporary CAD/CAM technologies with site and culturally specific design narratives, intuitive non-linear design processes, and historical cultural references. Before joining City University Hong Kong in the role as interdisciplinary Assistant Professor in the School of Creative Media and the architectural department, he was employed at the Architectural Association (2008-2014) and the Royal College of Art, (2007-2010), teaching students at the postgraduate level. The resulting works of his studio are exhibited international with examples being in the collection of the Antwerp Fashion Museum, the London Science Museum, the V&A, the Bellevue Arts Museum, Museum of Moscow and Vancouver. He is lecturing and published internationally with most recent articles focusing on the translation from craftsmanship to digital manufacturing."

ABOUT THE TALK
Since the mid-1990s, the reform of the Law of Criminal Procedure has been one of the most important law reform initiatives in mainland China. This reform has attracted great attention from the international community because of the tremendous effort to incorporate well recognised standards in international human rights law, especially those regarding due process and fairness in trials. In the lecture, Prof. Yue will introduce what has been changed in the Chinese criminal procedural law to incorporate these standards as well as the topics for debate and further reforms.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Prof. Yue Liling is a full Professor of Law in China’s biggest law school, China University of Political Science and Law. She is Cooperator for the Ministry of Education of China to co-chair the Collaborative Innovation Centre of Judicial Civilization between China and Germany through CUPSL and the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Crminal Law (Freiburg, Germany). She has participated in many important Chinese law reform projects that are supported by European countries. She has published 8 books and many papers. Aside from Chinese, she speaks English and German."

Macau Higher Education Institutions Basketball Tournament
Our basketball teams are now competing in the Macau Higher Education Institutions Basketball Tournament and the tournaments will last until 17 March 2016. Our teams have already played two games, having a good performance in both of them.
Gen Verde Start Now Workshop
A group of 13 USJ students have participated in a three days workshop organized by an international performing art group –GEN VERDE. The GEN VERDE has recently made an Asian tournee in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao with the artists from 13 countries and they have been presenting more than 1400 concerts around the world and published 66 albums. The participants of the workshops were invited to join the START NOW Concert in which more than 900 audiences were present on 20 February 2016.
Below please find the impression of one of our student Christine de Cruz, BCS student.
It was a great and memorable experience meeting the Gen Verde performing group. My first impression about them is they were sociable, friendly and most especially a person who always give their beautiful smiles even though they were very tired. The workshop helps each one of us a lot because it teaches us how to build teamwork in order to make a good performance during the concert. We met and make friends also with local residents of Macao. It was a good moment to cherish for me. Most, especially to my group who are locals of Macao, became our friends and mingle with us during the workshop. The staff and organisers were very well prepared and gave their best to make that event a successful one.
Of course, their performance was amazing and excellent, they give their very best during their concert and their songs were full of lessons. Most of the time if I'm attending a concert I immediately felt bored if they keep on singing but on 20 February I was totally quiet and listen to them. The beauty of the music that they were playing touch me so much because I can feel the meaning of the songs when they sang it. Thank you so much to the Gen Verde we learn a lot from them and of course to the staffs, organisers and to USJ, this workshop will help us as future missionaries in understanding the youth of today.
1st Inter-University Basketball Competition (IBC) organized by AUAP at I-Shou University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan
The USJ basketball team was invited to join the 1st AUAP Inter-University Basketball Tournament from 18 to 24 January in Kaohsiung. The team was warmly received by the representatives of the I-Shou University. They had a campus tour in the I-Shou University which included their great campus, hotel, and theme park owned by the university. The team had two competitions with two of the basketball teams of I-Shou University. It was a great experience for the team as the basketball team of I-Shou is one of the top teams in Taiwan. The matches do not only improve their basketball skills, but also the attitude of our players. It was a valuable lesson for the team.
Chinese New Year Celebration
To celebrate the Chinese New Year and to introduce the new exchange students to the Chinese culture, the USJ Students’ Association has organized a series of activities related to the theme. The students had the opportunity to practice traditional Chinese calligraphy and to taste traditional dishes that are usually served only in this holiday.
After the activities, the students were taken to the Shanghai restaurant where they enjoyed a traditional Chinese dinner where they could interact a bit more with the Chinese culture and with each other.
