ABOUT THE TALK
The study of extreme environments and extremophiles is a prominent field of Astrobiology. The interest in surveying analogues to conditions on Mars and icy moons of the solar system, in particular, has been sparked by evidence for the presence of liquid water and brines.
In this seminar we will explore the limits of life by looking into the microbiology of the deep-sea brines of the Red Sea. Deep-sea brines are unusual environments, combining multiple extremes (very high salinity high concentration of heavy metals, increased temperature, high pressure, and anoxic conditions) and are widely recognised as some of the harshest environments on Earth. The brines are remarkably stable and homogenous, with very limited mixing with overlying seawater, which leads to very sharp transition zones at the brine-seawater interfaces (e.g. density, oxygen, temperature, pH). Also, each individual pool has a unique combination of physical-chemical conditions, further enhancing the variety of environmental niches.
Such unique settings make them a privileged location for novel discoveries in the field of microbiology. While they were originally declared sterile, recent research based on a combination of cultivation and molecular-based methods have detected and isolated a wide range of unusual, new extremophiles. Deep-sea brines still remain vastly underexplored, and due to their unique nature should be prioritized as targets for Astrobiological-based research.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Prof Dr André Antunes an Associate Professor at the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences at Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST). He is an expert in Microbiology of extreme environments, having specialized in deep-sea and high salinity locations. He has done his undergraduate studies in Biology at the University of Coimbra (Portugal)- one of the oldest universities in Europe. His PhD research work was conducted at one of the most prestigious research centers in the field of Microbiology- the Lehrstuhl für Mikrobiologie und Archaeenzentrum of the University of Regensburg (Germany). His research career has included periods of work in several countries in Europe, as well as in Africa, and in the Middle East. Before his current appointment he has had previous faculty positions in Cape Verde, and in the UK. His current research focus revolves around biodiversity and bioprospection of unexplored extreme environments, geomicrobiology, and Astrobiology.

About the Speaker
Fr. Benedict Nivakoff, Prior, Monastery of St. Benedict, Norcia, Italy. He was educated at the
University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, USA and joined the Monastery at Norcia in 2001. He has been the Prior of the Monastery since 2016.
About the Talk
St Benedict is rightly seen as the Father of Western Monasticism but also as the Patron of Europe. In the years after the collapse of the Roman Empire, Benedictine Monks were responsible for keeping alive both the life of the Church in Europe and carrying forward the cultural and intellectual heritage of Greece and Rome. Prior Nivakoff will consider the requirements for the restoration of the Catholic Church in the light of the Benedictine experience and especially that of the community at Norcia.

ABOUT THE TALK
The Philippines is one of the seventeen megadiversity countries of the world but is also one of the hottest biodiversity hotspots. To protect and conserve its forests and biodiversity, 10 priority protected areas (PAs) are identified in the country. The Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park (NSMNP) is one of the largest PAs in the Philippines with a total area of 359,486 ha, consisting of 287,861 ha (~80%) of terrestrial ecosystem and 71,627 ha (20%) marine ecosystem. The NSMNP is host to endemic and critically endangered fauna, such as the Philippine eagle (Pithecophaga jeferryi), Isabela oriole (Oriolus isabellae), Philippine crocodile (Crocodylus mindorensis) and Bitatawa (Varanus bitatawa). While NSMNP has the largest block of remaining forest in the Philippines and rich biodiversity, it was also considered in the early 90s as one of the hottest biodiversity hotspots in the country. To address the threats to the forests and biodiversity and provide the local people with sustainable livelihood opportunities, various integrated and conservation initiatives were undertaken. This presentation will share the strategies implemented, experiences and lessons learned from 3 conservation initiatives where the speaker was involved, namely the: NSMNP Conservation Project (1996-2002); NSMNP Conservation and Development Project (2003-2005); and the Biodiversity and Watersheds Improved for Stronger Economy and Ecosystem Resilience (B+WISER) (2013-2018).
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr. Roberto R. Araño is a former professor and dean of one of the leading state-run forestry institutions in the Philippines. He facilitated a significant number of research projects and programmes, one of which is the establishment of the Northern Sierra Madre in eastern Isabela Province as one of the Ten Priority Protected Areas in the Philippines. He was engaged by Plan International Philippines as Executive Director of the Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park Conservation Project (NSMNP-CP Phase I) in the late 1990s. A major milestone of NSMNP-CP Phase I was the enactment of Republic Act 9125, establishment of the Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park. He was then engaged by the World Wildlife Fund WWF Philippines as Project Manager of NSMNP Conservation and Development Project Phase II in the early 2000s. In February 2013 to September 2018, he was Coordinator of the Philippines Biodiversity and Watersheds Improvement for Stronger Economy and Ecosystem Resilience (B+WISER) Program for three regions, i.e., Region 02 (Cagayan Valley), Region 01 (Ilocos region) and the Cordillera autonomous Region. A major milestone of B+WISER was the issuance of Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Department Administrative Order (DENR-DAO) 2018-21 “Adoption of the Lawin Forest and Biodiversity Protection System as a National Strategy for Forest and Biodiversity Protection in the Philippines.” In his 50 years of service to the forestry profession, he received awards/recognition from various academic, government and non-government institutions in the Philippines.

A delegation of students from the University's School of Business and Law attended the keynote panels and report launch by the Global Tourism Economy Research Centre. The students were impressed by the impact of tourism on the development of East Asian countries and the important role that it places in the global development of economies. This year, Argentina and Brazil were the highlights of the Forum, which saw more than 60,000 visitors from Mainland China to each country this year. Brazil is also one of the Portuguese-speaking Countries that Macao, as a platform between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries, aims to further develop a relationship with.
In addition, a panel on the development of the Greater Bay Area was the second focal point of the event. Distinguished business leaders in the field of Eco-Tourism, Cultural Tourism and Transportation from across China were featured with their prescriptive advice on the future outlook and development of the Greater Bay Area from the tourism perspective.
The forum gave the students a glimpse into the development of tourism in the future of Greater Bay Area. The rich and dynamic prescriptions of industry experts also provided a guiding light in the ever changing industry and the developmental aspects of tourism in the global context.
During the forum, the students also had a chance to meet the legendary Mr. A.J. Hackett who brought the infamous Macao Tower Bungee jump to the city.

On 10 October 2019, the Office for Student and Alumni Affairs, together with Candle Light Macau and Caritas Macau, organised the Blind Walk 2019 on the World Sight Day. The objectives of this event were to draw the attention of the participants on the importance of taking good care of their sights, caring for the individuals with vision and encouraging to support cornea donations. Around 40 students, staff and volunteers were present and participants experienced the inconvenience and discomfort from loss of sights and gained more knowledge from Matthew, a visual-impaired social worker of Caritas Macau and USJ alumnus, on how to assist the visually impaired. It was indeed an unforgettable experience for the staff and students.
USJ is dedicated to promoting a caring, ethically responsible, economically, socially and environmentally sustainable society.
Volunteers from 5 countries joined the Blind Walk on 10 October in India, Dubai, Canada, Philippines and Macau to share the message and joined hands to support cornea donation.

ABOUT THE TALK
The speaker will depart from her contribution to this book to debate representations of women in Goa during Portuguese colonialism in the more relevant periodicals published in the colony. These representations challenge historically gendered structures and show how gender is intertwined with other forms of hierarchy. Moreover, categorizations and representations of women allow to identify a broader and systematic correlation between Goa and India, particularly Calcutta, the epicentre of British colonialism in India during the crucial periods of the British raj.

ABOUT THE TALK
Science communication needs to be able to translate complex science topics into a form that is easily understandable by the general public. This process raises awareness about the contribution of science to solve societal issues and is part of an educational framework that provides tools for informed decision-making. The development of a sustainable society should be seen as a continuous process of learning and change, involving a variety of actors that provide guidance and leadership in formal and non-formal learning contexts. The Lousal mining village comprises a Mining Museum, a Science Centre and an Underground Mining Gallery. In this presentation, we will emphasise the importance of science education and communication for the society using some results of this ongoing project.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Álvaro Pinto was born in Porto, Portugal. He holds a degree in geology at the University of Porto and Masters degree in geology/metallogeny at the University of Lisbon. He was a mineralogist at the Neves Corvo mine and at the National Museum of Natural History and Science of the University of Lisbon. Álvaro Pinto was invited assistant professor in geology at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon and is currently the Executive Director of the Lousal Science Centre, member of the Portuguese Ciência Viva national network, in representation of the Faculty of Sciences; researcher at the Instituto Dom Luiz of the University of Lisbon (IDL/FCUL - Laboratório Associado). He also participated in several research projects. He is the author or co-author of more than three dozen of scientific papers and guest speaker in different organisms and International mining consultant for applied mineralogy in ore exploration, ore exploitation, ore beneficiation and environmental issues.

Students and staff of the Institute of Science and Environment of the University of Saint Joseph braved the midday scorching heat of the sun, on October 1st, to collect sand samples from one of the beaches in Coloane for quantification of microplastics.
Not only that, they also volunteered to do a mini coastal clean-up and gathered data on the types of litter found on the beach.
The activity is an important part of their Science modules but also enables them to make the connection about their personal consumption and the litter they see on the beach.
