About the topic:
A number of studies focus on the evangelical and missionary role by the members of the Society of Jesus in the Latin American and Asian frontiers. The speaker will use the GECEM Database (“Global Encounters between China and Europe Project) to compare two Jesuit mission areas and its role in the global commercial routes. First, he will focus on the Jesuit activities in the Philippines, and their links with Macao, Canton and Acapulco (New Spain). Second, he shall explain the commercial routes between Jesuit Missions in Paraguay and Buenos Aires, Asunción up to Río de Janeiro. Both case studies will show us how these non-state agents - the Jesuits - built their own networks and exchange channels for Chinese goods distribution (i.e. silk, porcelain, musk, amber and others) between Asia and Latin America. Thus, the local scale scheme of Jesuit studies will be integrated with analysis of inter-regional processes on a continental scale by using mainly Jesuit letters, regulations, reports, accounts and stories. The underlying hypothesis is that the Jesuits were active agents in the circulation of the Chinese goods and encouraged their consumption among local populations throughout the Latin America.
About the speaker:
Pedro Miguel Omar Svriz Wucherer - Postdoctoral Researcher at GECEM Project, UPO
Pedro Miguel Omar Svriz Wucherer has PhD in History and Humanities Studies by Pablo de Olavide University. His PhD dissertation was on the Guarani militias from Jesuit Reductions of Paraguay between 17th and 18th centuries. Presently, he is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Project GECEM “Global Encounters between China and Europe: Trade Networks, Consumption and Cultural Exchanges in Macau and Marseille, 1680-1840”. The project is funded by ERC (European Research Council) -Starting Grant scheme under the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (Horizon 2020).Prof. Manuel Perez Garcia is its principal investigator. ABOUT THE TALK
The story of women in film (both as subject and object) has been wildly disregarded in Portuguese cinematic culture. Ana Sofia Pereira and Vera Casaca, both storytellers, both screenwriters, both women in film, will bring a new insight into the reality women in Portuguese cinematic culture face. Ana Sofia Pereira will use the research she has conducted on women screenwriters and directors in Portugal as a starting point to expand on how women have influenced Portuguese cinematic History and the films and characters created. Vera Casaca will depart from her real-life experience as a filmmaker to discuss the reality of working in cinema upon returning to her hometown. She will focus on the hardships she found, not only as a woman, but as a southerner and as a filmmaker working with no/low budget films.
Exploring and discussing Portuguese cinematic History through a feminine perspective, this public lecture aims to grant a voice to Portuguese women filmmakers that, up until recently, have been rendered invisible and voiceless.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Ana Sofia Pereira has just submitted her PhD on the topic "Women Screenwriters: A Dynamic Definition of Language in the Feminine in Portuguese Cinema". Besides her work as a researcher and lecturer, she is also a screenwriter and script supervisor having worked in countries such as Portugal, United States and Brazil. Her latest work includes a TV-Series that premiered in one of Portugal’s major networks early in 2019.
Vera Casaca has studied directing and scriptwriting at the School of Visual Arts and at the New York Film Academy in New York. She has written and directed “On the Phone with God” and “If Poirot was here”. She contributes to the cultural magazine “Algarve Informativo” with articles about cinema. She teaches scriptwriting, storyboard and continuity in Portugal.

The Public and International Relations Office (PIRO) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) organised three groups of colleagues from various administrative units and from the University’s Institute of Science and Environment to participate in the 10th Edition of Macau Eco TrailHiker. The event, which took place on Saturday, November 2nd, 2019, had around 2,600 participants and 650 teams competing in three race categories. In these races, participants ran along different natural trails in Coloane, exploring the greener side of Macao. USJ’s teams participated in the 20km corporate challenge as well as the 10km fun family course.
By participating in this initiative, relationships amongst colleagues were strengthened and public awareness of ecological and environmental issues and the need for an eco-friendlier lifestyle in Macao was raised. Additionally, the raised funds will go into supporting the operational expenses of community event beneficiaries, such as The Cradle of Hope Association and the Salvation Army – Hong Kong and Macau Command.

As a way of strengthening the University's mission and enacting its strategic objectives, the Public and International Relations Office (PIRO) organised an Internationalisation Week from October 28th until November 1st, 2019. It counted with the support of the University's Senior Management and guest facilitator and speaker Mrs Magda Ferro, Head of the International Relations Office of the Porto Regional Centre of Universidade Católica Portuguesa.
The Internationalisation Week included: “Internationalisation and Good Practices” and “Embracing Diversity” staff workshops, the first for administrative staff and the latter for heads of administrative units; a meeting with the heads of administrative units to discuss current practices and how to further improve services; and the “Internationalisation of Higher Education Institutions: Drivers and Tools” Public Lecture, where a managerial approach was explored and the USJ Community and general public were welcome to attend.
The workshops’ participants had the opportunity of reflecting through facilitated games, and the discussions that resulted from them, which aimed highlighting the challenges and opportunities for internationalisation in the context of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The workshops provided tools for participants' reflection on the role they play in the services that contribute to an inclusive multicultural University and how best practices can be benchmarked at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), regardless of individual differences and culture or ethnicity. Additionally, the public lecture addressed the management principles in internationalisation, its rationales, the Systematic Process - Multi-Level Analysis Model, and the identification and selection of internationalisation tools best suited for the specific goals of the HEI.
USJ endeavours to organise future similar initiatives, recognising the importance of internationalisation and the value of all University units in its strengthening.

The XX Pavilion, a temporary bamboo structure designed by the USJ - University of Saint Joseph's Architecture students, was officially inaugurated on October 30th, 2019, and is open to the public until December 8th. The Opening Ceremony counted with the presence of the general public and USJ Community, including the University's Senior Management, government officials, Architects Association of Macau, professionals and students. Part of the Art Macao 2019, this project was organised by the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Creative Industries. It was funded by the Higher Education Fund of the Macao's Government Higher Education Bureau (DSES).
The XX Pavilion expands on the tradition of USJ's Department of Architecture bamboo pavilions. With a larger scale and complex programme, it sets an inhabitable temporary space that invites participation. This temporary structure celebrates the symbiosis between the craftsmanship of Macao's bamboo scaffolders and the inventiveness and digital design skills of fifth-year architecture students. Inspired by the vernacular bamboo knot technique, the pavilion features a double-cross layout. This design simultaneously commemorates the XX anniversary of Macao SAR and initiates the celebrations of the X anniversary of the USJ's Architecture Programme. The XX Pavilion is open for activities by the USJ and broader local community, standing as an invitation for cross-disciplinary collaboration, hosting exhibitions, lectures, workshops and other events.
In this project, students researched and delved into multiple sources of inspiration, rooted in the traditional techniques used in bamboo scaffolding and bamboo opera theatres, and celebrating the work of other artists/architects, such as local artists João Ó and Rita Machado (Treeplets, State of Mind), and international parametric architect Kristoff Crolla (ZCB Bamboo Pavilion, TOROO), to further innovate and give their contribution to the international contemporary bamboo architecture discourse.
The Department of Architecture of the University of Saint Joseph has been organising the bamboo pavilion project since 2012/2013 with the continuous support of the Macao Foundation. Through the years, architecture students explored the potential of vernacular bamboo techniques in innovative architecture structures. This continuous research and design work resulted in multiple pavilions displayed in Macao: Pulse, Bloom, Trace, Cloud, Elapse, and X-Peax. The project was initiated by Prof. Thomas Daniell and counted with the invaluable contribution and expertise of a talented group of experts that lectured the bamboo pavilion workshop over the years, namely Kristof Crolla, Dannes Kok, Jason Dembski, João Palla, Diogo Teixeira, João Ó, and Neil Sansom.
The XX Pavilion is open to public at USJ’s Ilha Verde Campus until 8 December 2019. All are welcome to visit it during the University’s opening hours.

ABOUT THE TALK
It is well known that people with ASD have difficulty in doing eye contact - such a simple characteristic of social interaction is a huge challenge for them. So, they just don’t look and, more than that, they usually don’t care or don’t understand why it is supposed to do it. But this we all know! And you? How do you look at people with ASD? Ms Fang Jing and Prof. Vitor Teixeira will talk about two different but complementary looks: a psychoeducational look and a psychosocial, humanist look.
Ms Fang Jing will make an introduction to the Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) model. The purpose, the principles, the methods, the role of family and the factors affecting the effectiveness of the intervention will be some of the topics covered in this psychoeducational look. Indispensable tutorials will be shown and different strategies on handling problem behaviors will be discussed.
Prof. Vitor Teixeira will share living experiences with people with ASD. In different contexts, in different situations (educational, social, personal,...), in the last 22 years, there were many opportunities to be together with someone with ASD. That changes the way we look at them. Concrete examples of a psychosocial intervention, namely the role of the counsellor in the Occupational Centre, the Social Life Support Groups and the Clubs for Inclusion will be described.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Fang Jing, a postgraduate student in psychology at Southwest Normal University, a member of the Qingdao Municipal Political Consultative Conference, is currently the director of the Yilin Education and Exhibition Center in Ninghai County, the chairman of the Qingdao Autism Research Association, and the director of the Qingdao Yilin Education Exhibition Center, and Macau Yilin Technology Co., Ltd. technical consultant.
Vitor Teixeira is a clinical child psychologist teaching modules of child development and psychological intervention to education, psychology and social work graduate and undergraduate students. Has a major interest in the topic of “children’s time use” but is also doing research in different domains related to child development, specifically with disabilities and special education needs, trying to contribute to a more inclusive society. Is Associate Professor and the Dean of the USJ’s Faculty of Social Sciences.

On October 26th, Saturday, several members of the Public and International Relations Office took a group of Fall Semester International Exchange Students for dinner at Nga Tim Restaurant, a restaurant located in the Coloane village that has an extensive and rich history.
With the aim of fostering integration with the local culture and costumes, students had the opportunity to savour popular Cantonese dishes, like crispy fried icefishes, traditional Yangzhou fried rice, and clams in black bean sauce.
Right next to the restaurant is the Eduardo Marques Square, a Portuguese-style square where the Chapel of St. Francis Xavier (built in 1928) is located and that brilliantly illustrates the mix between Eastern and Western cultures. It was at this square that the students, after dinner, played with popular children toys “bang snaps” and “air bubbles”, deepening their understanding of the local costumes.
This Macao Inside Out Event, kindly sponsored by the Macao Foundation, ended with a trip to the Tam Kung Temple, a nearby temple that was constructed in 1862 in honour of Tam Kung, one of the Gods who could forecast the weather, according to Chinese folk legends.

Prof. Edlia Simões, professor of Psychology, from the University of Saint Joseph's Faculty of Social Sciences, has been recently presenting her research project findings to School Directors and Portuguese teachers in official schools in Macao.
About the Study "Learning Portuguese as a L2 in Macao: Validation of an assessment instrument"
The Portuguese Language is the second official language of Macao and over the years since the handover, learning Portuguese as a second language (L2) in schools has grown (Yan, 2017). Macao has aimed to become the “main actor on the dynamics of teaching and disseminating the Portuguese language in the Asia-Pacific Region” (Macao Higher Education Magazine, 2016, p.5).
In this context, our study aimed to validate an assessment instrument to better understand how Chinese children in Macao are learning the Portuguese language. In this study participated 216 Chinese children learning Portuguese as a second language in Primary school (1stto 6thGrades). Resulting from a previous pilot study the assessment instrument was ameliorated for validation. The assessment instrument comprises 7 subtests to assess several language skills (e.g. oral comprehension, word reading accuracy, vocabulary knowledge, reading comprehension, phonological awareness and spelling).
A quantitative analysis was performed showing that the test demonstrates good psychometric properties enabling us to pinpoint in which areas Chinese children have more difficulties learning Portuguese as a second language. The results also provided the possibility to discriminate students’ proficiency levels between grades and between bilingual vs. non bilingual classes. We expect to have contributed to the understanding of the several components that are implied in second language acquisition of Portuguese by Chinese children. This will help educators to adjust and possibly improve the area of Portuguese Teaching as a L2.

Initiated by the Senior Management as a way of strengthening the University mission and enacting its strategic objectives, particularly the aim to “promote whole-person development and institutional accountability”, the Human Resources Office organised two full-day workshops on October 22nd and 23rd. The workshops were facilitated by Krempl Communications International and targeted the University's Heads of Administrative and Support Units.
The main objective was to provide a transformative experience while developing the competencies of the University's middle managers in leadership in a global context. Specifically, it provided tools for the staff to communicate more confidently; to connect on a personal level, thereby establishing high quality interpersonal relationships regardless of individual differences such as culture or ethnicity; and to stand out effectively from their global counterparts.

ABOUT THE TALK
The study of extreme environments and extremophiles is a prominent field of Astrobiology. The interest in surveying analogues to conditions on Mars and icy moons of the solar system, in particular, has been sparked by evidence for the presence of liquid water and brines.
In this seminar we will explore the limits of life by looking into the microbiology of the deep-sea brines of the Red Sea. Deep-sea brines are unusual environments, combining multiple extremes (very high salinity high concentration of heavy metals, increased temperature, high pressure, and anoxic conditions) and are widely recognised as some of the harshest environments on Earth. The brines are remarkably stable and homogenous, with very limited mixing with overlying seawater, which leads to very sharp transition zones at the brine-seawater interfaces (e.g. density, oxygen, temperature, pH). Also, each individual pool has a unique combination of physical-chemical conditions, further enhancing the variety of environmental niches.
Such unique settings make them a privileged location for novel discoveries in the field of microbiology. While they were originally declared sterile, recent research based on a combination of cultivation and molecular-based methods have detected and isolated a wide range of unusual, new extremophiles. Deep-sea brines still remain vastly underexplored, and due to their unique nature should be prioritized as targets for Astrobiological-based research.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Prof Dr André Antunes an Associate Professor at the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences at Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST). He is an expert in Microbiology of extreme environments, having specialized in deep-sea and high salinity locations. He has done his undergraduate studies in Biology at the University of Coimbra (Portugal)- one of the oldest universities in Europe. His PhD research work was conducted at one of the most prestigious research centers in the field of Microbiology- the Lehrstuhl für Mikrobiologie und Archaeenzentrum of the University of Regensburg (Germany). His research career has included periods of work in several countries in Europe, as well as in Africa, and in the Middle East. Before his current appointment he has had previous faculty positions in Cape Verde, and in the UK. His current research focus revolves around biodiversity and bioprospection of unexplored extreme environments, geomicrobiology, and Astrobiology.

About the Speaker
Fr. Benedict Nivakoff, Prior, Monastery of St. Benedict, Norcia, Italy. He was educated at the
University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, USA and joined the Monastery at Norcia in 2001. He has been the Prior of the Monastery since 2016.
About the Talk
St Benedict is rightly seen as the Father of Western Monasticism but also as the Patron of Europe. In the years after the collapse of the Roman Empire, Benedictine Monks were responsible for keeping alive both the life of the Church in Europe and carrying forward the cultural and intellectual heritage of Greece and Rome. Prior Nivakoff will consider the requirements for the restoration of the Catholic Church in the light of the Benedictine experience and especially that of the community at Norcia.
