Researchers from the Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) of the University of Saint Joseph have determined how the locally consumed Asiatic clam Meretrix meretrix responds to 4,4-dichlorobenzophenone (DCBP), a breakdown product of the pesticide Dicofol (DDT-like).
The study, published in Chemosphere, evaluated how clams uptake and depurate environmental (50 ng/L) and supra-environmental (500 ng/L) concentrations of DCBP in water. Similar bioconcentration factors were obtained for both concentrations of DCBP but only clams exposed to environmental concentrations successfully depurated after 24 h. Although clams exposed to supra-concentration presented higher elimination factor, they did not reach the original levels after depuration. Moreover, values detected in these clams were higher than the Maximum Residue Level (10 ng/g) established by the European legislation. This indicates that longer periods of depuration time than the ones used in this study may be needed in order to reach safe levels for human consumption.
The study provides important information on the danger that DCBP poses and subsequent implications to consumers if depuration time given to exposed clams is not enough. This will also help formulate relevant warning measures in aquaculture (in the event of excessive water contamination), for example, whether to ban or recommend a longer depuration period than what is normally being practiced.
This study was accomplished through the MacGroves project funded by the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT), coordinated by Prof. Karen Araño Tagulao and Prof. Chan Shek Kiu of ISE. The team also included Lucia Ivorra (PhD student, ISE/USJ), Patricia Cardoso Teixeira (Consultant, CIIMAR, University of Porto) and Catarina Cruzeiro (Consultant, University of Coimbra).

On 29 June, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) opened the Bishop Domingos Lam Centre for Research in Education. The Research Centre in Education is being named after Bishop Emeritus of Macao Don Domingos Lam Ka Tseung (澳門林家駿主教) as a recognition for his deep interest, involvement and support in the setting up of USJ and for all his contributions to the development of education and social services in Macao. The Centre has received generous start-up funding and support from the Diocese of Macao, and immense personal support from the Bishop of Macao, Don Stephen Lee Bun-sang. It focuses on conducting and reporting research that brings direct benefit to Macao’s schools and education, addressing local issues and serving the Macao community as well as looking more widely, drawing on international research evidence.
The Centre seeks to promote and sustain the development of research in education, to link research and educational practice, policy making, decision making and action, to disseminate the results of research through a range of channels, and to be a resource for educational research findings and their dissemination. The Centre will run training and development on research in education, and provide seminars, workshops, and conferences on research in education. It is designed to develop and provide consultancy and programme development and to engage with global educational networks through the dissemination of its activities and findings.
The Centre Research in Education has several areas of initial research focus, of topical interest to Macao, including: Catholic schooling; inclusive education; early years’ education; ICT; leadership and management; curriculum and pedagogy; education and society; and education and well-being. It already has identified many projects for research, conferences, courses and workshops.
The Centre involves resident academics from a range of disciplines in USJ, together with visiting academic staff who have close connections with the University, from Australia, the UK, South-east Asia and Europe. As part of the School of Education and the University, it works with funded research and postgraduate research projects, training up the next generation of researchers in education.
In the opening speeches, speakers noted that the Centre seeks to work closely with the local community and local networks of schools to provide a range of research-based services. It aims to bring forward research and development projects that meet the needs of the local community in an era of change, and to improve local education by using research evidence and evidence-informed decision making, see dlcre.usj.edu.mo.
The opening ceremony included the book launch of "Perspectives on Inclusion", with contributions from local and international authors, focusing on inclusive education in Macao.

The University of Saint Joseph's Master of Communication and Media (MCM) will launch the first Open Class Exhibition titled “We Connect” to showcase students’ multimedia projects on Saturday, June 22nd, 2019, at Creative Macau (創意空間) at 2:30p.m.
The Open Class Exhibition “We Connect” implies that the core part of communication is about connection and interaction and involves four sessions: Macao-themed videos; eco-themed infographic posters; creative presentations and an interactive short movie.
The Macao-themed videos will display a number of short video content, showing the students’ own unique views of Macao. The poster exhibition outlines an environmental theme, demonstrating the state of the environment, provoking both awareness and dialogue of action to be done for our Earth. The creative presentations, produced in Pecha Kucha - a modern storytelling format in the industry - share the students’ start-up ideas. The exhibition ends with an interactive film, offering a postmodern version of the classic "Alice in Wonderland" to spark conversation on the variety of film-making.
“This Open Class Exhibition proves that the Master of Communication and Media is at the forefront of the contemporary information society. The Master programme has a strong reputation. Technical and practical topics are covered, ranging from audio-visual production to online digital publishing techniques, reflecting upon the entire range of modern platforms, and addressing topics dealing with the interrelationship between media, cultures, and many forms of social organisations” said Prof. José Manuel Simões, the Coordinator for the Department of Communication and Media of the University.
For more information regarding the exhibition, please contact Prof. José Manuel Simões at jmsimoes@usj.edu.mo or +853 6809 0809.

The Bishop Domingos Lam Centre for Research in Education (DLCRE) will open its operational research work in 29 June 2019. The Centre named for Bishop Emeritus of Macao, Don Domingos Lam Ka Tseung (澳門林家駿主教) is sited at the University of Saint Joseph, Ilha Verde Campus, and housed in the School of Education.
The DLCRE aims to create a world-class research environment and community that attracts the best researchers to conduct multi-disciplinary practice-oriented research, engage on knowledge exchange, assist the Diocese of Macau to support the work of the Catholics schools and collaborate with other higher education, and research institutions to explore forward-looking and innovative approaches to education within the strands areas of: Inclusive Education; Catholic Education; Leadership and Management; Early Years; ICT in Education; Curriculum and Pedagogy; Education and Society; Education and Wellbeing.
The official opening will be officiated by the H.E. Bishop of Macao Lee Bun-sang, Stephen and the Rector of USJ, Professor Fr. Peter Stilwell. The event is marked with two important activities. The opening will start with a public lecture on education titled ‘Our Commitment to Catholic Education: Looking to the Future with Confidence’ addressed by two world-wide renown and prominent Professors in the field of Catholic Education, Prof. Keith Morrison, Vice-rector of USJ and Director of DLCRE and Rev. Professor Stephen Morgan, Dean of the Faculty of Religious Studies at USJ. After the public lecture, there will be the launching of the book ‘Perspectives on Inclusion’ with Prof. Ana Correia, Dean of the School of Education at USJ and one of the authors as the presenter of the book.
ABOUT THE TALKS
In the rapidly changing times we live in, there is little room for complacency when it comes to Catholic Education. In line with the historical recognition of the contribution of Catholic schools, the need for schools of the ‘Catholic’ denomination and the teaching of Religious/Moral Education around the world is facing many challenges. Macao is no different. Since Catholicism first planted its roots in the Chinese territory in 1557 through the Bula Super Specula Militantis Ecclesiae, Catholic Education has grown, changed, adapted and been threatened.
The talks recall the empirical investigation of Catholic schooling in Macao and the essential of two documents in the field of education: Gravissimum Educationis and Ex Corde Ecclesiae.
The speakers will point out the challenges to which Catholic educational institutions are called to respond, with the development of their own specific mission. It will also engage the current issues of evidence-based education and the ‘what works’ agenda in educational research.
It is our hope that the issues that the speakers will raise should be of interest to a broad range of educators, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners alike and will guide us in our proposed endeavour to achieve our set goals.

ABOUT THE BOOK
I
n an inclusive education system, educators engage with increasing their understanding of individual differences, especially in regard to learning, and develop and adjust learning and assessment tasks and contexts in ways that make them accessible and appropriate for all their students regardless of starting ability levels, interests, learning strengths and weakness. In inclusive schools, diverse approaches to learning are valued and all learners are challenged and supported to be successful in their learning goals.
Macao has begun the journey to develop and increasingly inclusive education system. This book has been written as the journey is beginning and explores some of the different perspectives towards inclusion and interpretation of “inclusive education” within the Macao’s education system and the wider community at this time. The main aims of the research presented in this book are to understand the different views and roles of staff in Macao schools and in the wider community. The book raises question about how inclusion in Macao might unfold and identifies areas where efforts may be needed to progress inclusive education. Donna Couzens

ABOUT THE TALK
Polar regions including the Arctic and Antarctic are of significance to global climate, oceanographic conditions as well as environmental and ecological changes. China started the first national expedition for Arctic in 1999 and established its national research station (named as Yellow River Station) in King's Bay of Svalbard Isles in 2007. This represents the enthusiasm and responsible actions of Chinese in contributing to scientific research and international collaboration for polar protection. In connection, a team of Hong Kong and Macau scientists and environmentalists visited Longyearbyen and surroundings (79°N16°E) in April 2019 exploring the ecological, oceanographic and biological interests in the higher arctic. This updates the latest geographic situations and our contributions to innovative and environmental research.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER

On June 10th, 2019, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) commemorated the Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities by attending several celebratory activities in Macao. USJ was represented by its Rector, Prof. Fr. Peter Stilwell, the Faculty of Humanities' Emeritus Prof. Maria Antónia Espadinha and the Coordinator for the Department of Portuguese Studies of the Faculty of Humanities, Prof. Vera Borges.
The celebrations started with Portugal's National Anthem played by the Public Security Police Force of Macao and a flag raising ceremony at the Consulate General of Portugal in Macao. Next, crowds gathered at the Luís de Camões Garden, where activities like poetry recitals by High School students, traditional Portuguese folklore dances and a visit to the Camões Grotto to place flowers next to the bust of Luís Vaz de Camões, a famous Portuguese poet that once lived in Macao and whom the garden is named after, occurred.
Finally, the Consul-General of Portugal in Macao and Hong Kong, Ambassador Paulo Cunha Alves, hosted a Reception for the Portuguese Community and friends at the Official Residency of the Consul-General, which counted with the presence of distinguished guests, including the Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region, Mr Chui Sai On.

About the talk
With the recent development and use of information technology and communication systems, individuals, companies and public entities have tremendously benefited in terms of information exchange and services delivery. However, several risks are associated with this technological development as different entities and individuals are exposed to a non-traditional type of Financial crime.
For the last 30 years, financial crime has increasingly become of concern to governments throughout the world and its substantial threat to the development of economies and their stability is no longer questioned.
It covers the following illegal activities: fraud; electronic crime; money laundering; terrorist financing; bribery and corruption; market abuse and insider dealing; information security.
In the Greater Bay Area, Macau and Hong Kong have respectively established a regulatory framework dealing with the financial crime.
Therefore, the purpose of this round table discussion is to analyse the recent development of the regulatory framework dealing with financial crime in Macao and the controversies about the nexus between cyber security and the right to privacy and free speech both in Macao and Hong Kong.
