In an aim to showcase the graduating students’ projects, the Faculty of Creative Industries' Department of Communication and Media held two successive events on May 29th, Wednesday: the Opening of the "Emotion" Multimedia Exhibition and the Premiere of "4 Short Stories You Won't Believe".
The “Emotion” Multimedia Exhibition attempts to encapsulate the subject of intuitive feelings interpreted through photography and video production. The Opening was officially held at the Kent Wong Exhibition Gallery of the University's Ilha Verde Campus at 6:00PM. The students’ works (photography and videos) will be open for public viewing, with free admission, until June 10th, 2019, during the University's opening hours.
Each of the students’ works freely explores the central theme of the exhibition, with reverence to specific subjects expressed through their outputs, such as desire, death, abstract representations of life and human connections, among others. The photography exhibition not only showcases the students’ creative eye in capturing vivid imagery, but also in adding more depth to their works through photo manipulation and technical treatment.

The Premiere of "4 Short Stories You Won't Believe" took place at the Auditório Centenário de Fátima of the University's Ilha Verde Campus, at 7:00PM. The video installation showcased a summary of students' works throughout their course, before the screening of four short mockumentaries that touched various subject matters revolving around the human psyche, including interpersonal interaction with the community and dealing with technology. The purpose of the documentaries was to further debate and raise awareness of the concept of "fake news", given that the challenge given to students was to create fiction that was highly believable and could be perceived as actual reality.

The Communication and Media Department of the University of Saint Joseph's Faculty of Creative Industries believes in the monumental role of creative expression in the development of its students as future multimedia creators. According to the head of the department, Professor José Manuel Simões,
“this exhibition largely focuses on advancing its students to be more than just about producing outputs, but to be visionaries in delivering messages that generate meanings, expand knowledge and enhance the community’s ability to communicate in a fast-paced world of technology and platforms. It also offers the necessary fundamental instrument for its students to function in different fields of expertise, and prepare them with advanced skills towards achieving their future goals.”
For more information regarding the exhibition, please contact Professor José Manuel Simões, via telephone at +853 6809 0809 or via email at jmsimoes@usj.edu.mo.

On May 17th, 2019, a delegation of School of Business and Law (SBL) students from the Bachelor of Business Administration programme visited the Zhuhai Macau Cross-Border Industrial Zone. The visit was jointly organised jointly by the University of Saint Joseph and Seng Fung Jewellery Group. The students were given an extensive tour of the Seng Fung Jewellery Group facilities in the Cross Border Zone and Ms. Sarah Yao, Deputy Director of the Cross Border Comprehensive Management Bureau, was also on hand to present the policies and future developments of the zone.
In addition, the students visited other Macao businesses stationed in the Cross-Border Zone to further understand the current business environment of Macao businesses in China. This activity follows the recent developments of the “Greater Bay Area” initiative policy by both the regional and central governments.

The event was made possible by Mr. Manny Lee, Managing Director of Seng Fung Jewelry Group, whom graciously granted the use of the Seng Fung training room for the interactive talk between the students and the Zhuhai authorities. Other companies visited were; “Azona Enterprises Limited”, “Water Crytal Love Limites”, “Latin America and Portuguese Speaking Countries Products Exchange”.

SBL believes it is vital for students to understand the changing business environments around them, being committed to providing a comprehensive education with real life networking and learning opportunities for both local and visiting students through our continuing efforts to serve the betterment of education in both Macao and China.
SBL would also like to extend a word of appreciation for the support received from the Zhuhai Free Trade Zone Administrative Committee and the Macao Foundation.

Researchers from the Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) of the University of Saint Joseph have determined, for the first time, Macao's Age. The study, published in Geoscience Frontiers, used state of the art geochronological methods on ancient zircon crystals (one of the toughest minerals on the planet) selected from granitic rocks of Macao to show that the territory was generated during the Jurassic Period, between 156 to 165 million years ago (Ma).
Surprisingly, the territory was not all formed at the same time. It was emplaced during two distinct pulses of magmatism that occurred in Southeast China during the Mesozoic Era (a period where Dinosaurs roamed the Earth), related with north-westward subduction of the Paleo-Pacific plate under the Eurasian plate. The study shows that the islands of Taipa and Coloane were the first to be formed, 165 to 163 Ma, and the Macao island was the last to be generated, 157 to 156 Ma. Later, during the Cretaceous period, those granitic rocks were cut by volcanic dykes (dacitic rocks), with some of the younger dikes being emplaced less than 120 Ma (e.g. “Vale das Borboletas” in Coloane).
Additionally, this work also found that the magmas that later gave origin to the granitic rocks of Macao were produced by the melting of very ancient infra-crustal rocks dated from Archean to Paleo-Proterozoic ages (older than 1600 Ma).
This is the first study about the Geology of Macao published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal and resulted from a research collaboration, initiated in 2015, bringing together scientists from Macao and Portugal. The project (Mag.I.C.) was funded by the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) and coordinated by Professor Ágata Alveirinho Dias, Professor and Researcher at ISE and also a Researcher at Instituto Dom Luiz - IDL - University of Lisbon. It also had the participation of Professor João Mata from IDL as a team member, Pedro Quelhas as a doctoral student of the project, and Dr. Maria Luisa Ribeiro as a consultant.
This work will be also presented in the upcoming international Goldschmidt conference, which will be held in Barcelona in August 2019 (view Abstract here).

About the talk
When choosing a mate, individuals may rely on the mating decisions of their conspecifics to help them with their choice. If that happens, individuals should change their mate preference after observing other individuals choosing. This behaviour is called mate-choice copying (MCC), and it is a mechanism of non-independent mate-choice that can theoretically affect the evolutionary outcome of a population due to its potential to create informational cascades.
Although many theoretical and empirical studies on MCC have been published, the mechanisms of MCC and its effects on evolution are still not fully understood. Recently, some authors suggested, in a conceptual article, that MCC has the potential to promote or hamper speciation and hybridization if the effects of MCC are considered in a spatial setting, where this mechanism can homogenize or diversify the collective preference among different (sub)populations, depending on the rules from which MCC operates (Varela et al. 2018).
The objective of my current research is is to understand the role of MCC on ecology and evolution, when the effects of a spatial setting is considered. To achieve this goal, I am creating individual-(or agent-) based models to simulate the evolution of a population in such systems, and I am also planning to do some empirical research to validate the theoretical models.
About the speaker
Manuel Sapage graduated in Environmental Biology in the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, where he also obtained a Master degree in Conservation Biology, with a thesis on reproductive behaviour of diurnal birds of prey in captivity.
After his master’s degree Manuel Savage gained interest in behavioural ecology, especially in the topic of mate-choice copying, and in computer programming. During this time he mastered and taught courses in the R programming language and worked with the Stan and JAGS languages that focus on Bayesian statistics. He is currently enrolled in the Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution doctoral programme (BIODIV) at the University of Lisbon and has been working on empirical and theoretical models linking mate-choice copying and spatial dynamics.

About the talk
Sound is a very powerful and flexible mean for creating emotional engagement and conveying long-lasting subliminal impressions, yet it has been consistently underused in product and brand design over the last few decades. This talk will be a journey detailing the psychoacoustics behind the process of product sound design, case-studies in the use of sonic branding, and the new opportunities that arise from the integration of various interactive technologies, including ambient sensing and generative creation of sound design elements.
About the speaker
Pedro Duarte Pestana was born in Lisbon in 1975, and after a varied learning path, he has dedicated himself to an interdisciplinary career that always gravitates around sound and media. He has a Ph.D. in Computer Music and is currently a Gulbenkian Professor of Interactive Sound Design at UCP in Porto. He has led the Research Center in Science and Technology of the Arts at UCP and taught extensively in several Universities in Portugal. Working in intelligent systems applied to audio, he has helped found two software companies in Canada and worked as lead audio research and consultant in the audio software industry. As a sound engineer, he has worked with many prominent artists such as Teresa Salgueiro, Pedro Jóia, Mário Laginha, among others, and owns a studio that specializes in sound design for multimedia products. He has worked in several media installations, drawing from his skills with physical computing, most recently with artist Bill Fontana.

ABOUT THE TALK
As a consequence of the economic crisis in Europe, especially since 2008, the ideas and tactics of the Portuguese architects are expressed through small-scale inter- ventions and temporary objects. Under the new economic paradigm and facing the increasing intangibility of the large scale operations, designers are no longer nec- essarily subjugated to the idea of the built object. Given the difficulty of access to the traditional mechanisms of design and making of urban space – public competi- tions and public service - the new generations of architects reinvent the scale of intervention and material expression of their design. The lecture will introduce the work of Arquitectos Anonimos studio, a sample of this latest generations, and a reflex of new times and economies. In the implicit eulogy of anonymity one can read in their projects, they challenge of the existing notions of authorship and the exacerbated individualism associated with the previous start-system and the formal use of the city and its infrastructures.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Filipe Afonso studied Mathematics and Architecture in Porto and Barcelona. Cur- rently he is a researcher and professor at the Guangzhou University, School of Architecture and guest professor at University of Saint Joseph. In 2006 he co-founded Arquitectos Anónimos, an architecture studio that produces its work as a kind of individual supplanting, reacting in the contemporary Portuguese context of the exaggerated weight of authorship “individuality”. Filipe has taken part to many exhibitions, lectures and workshops and has been published widely. He has been a professor and guest speaker at various institutions in Portugal, Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Netherland, Slovenia, South Korea and United States. He was recently the recipient, in co-authorship with an interdisciplinary team of designers, of the 2015 iF Design Award and the 2015 Green Good Design award.

Dr. Alexis Tam Chon Weng, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, presided on behalf of the Chief Executive of Macao SAR and distinguished guests included Mr. Ho Hau Wah, Vice-Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Mr. Xue Xiaofeng, Deputy Director of the Central People’s Government Liaison Office of the Macao S.A.R, Mr. Lionel Leong, Secretary for Economy and Finance, Dr. Wu Zhiliang, President of Board of Directors of Macao Foundation, Prof. Isabel Gil, Rector of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa.
The ceremony began with speeches by the His Excellency Don Stephen Lee, Bishop of Macao and Chancellor of the University and the School, Dr. Samuel Kio, Principal of CDSJ6, and Prof. Fr. Peter Stilwell, Rector of USJ, and a concluding word by His Excellency Secretary Alexis Tam.
After the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, a short video was shown registering the stages of the construction of the campus. The session in the auditorium ended with musical performances by CDSJ6 and USJ students. Visitors were then invited on a Campus Tour followed by USJ’s International Parade. The parade displayed the multicultural nature of the University’s community and marked the opening of this year’s edition of USJ’s International Cultural Fair & Languages Day, during which staff and students share traditions, costumes and national dishes.
The Catholic Diocese of Macao decided, in 2006, to provide a fully equipped academic campus for the University of Saint Joseph. To do so, it made available a plot of Diocesan land in the Ilha Verde District occupied by the Saint Joseph Diocesan School 6, on condition the new campus was built to house both the University and the School. The campus should provide the surrounding community with high quality educational, cultural and sporting facilities.
The initial concept for the new Campus was by internationally-renowned Japanese Architect, Koji Yagi. The actual design and developed project were the work of Architect Miguel CampinaFerreira and MPS – Macau Professional Services. The construction work was adjudicated to HCCG Building and Civil Engineering (Macau) Limited. The quantity surveyors were Currie &Brown (HK). The campus has a GFA of 38,145m2and was built between 2013 and 2017. Financial support was received from public funds, from the Catholic Diocese of Macao and from other esteemed donors who will be duly evoked on a Donor’s Wall, to be unveiled in the near future.
Typhoon Hato hit Macao on August 23rd2017, severely damaging all the facilities in the basement, causing the loss of valuable technical equipment, and destroying the entire 25,000 volumes of the Macao Ricci Institute’s library. Repairs and enhancement works are still, with the support of public funds and a generous donation of MOP 15 million by the Adelson Family Foundation.
