About the talk
When choosing a mate, individuals may rely on the mating decisions of their conspecifics to help them with their choice. If that happens, individuals should change their mate preference after observing other individuals choosing. This behaviour is called mate-choice copying (MCC), and it is a mechanism of non-independent mate-choice that can theoretically affect the evolutionary outcome of a population due to its potential to create informational cascades.
Although many theoretical and empirical studies on MCC have been published, the mechanisms of MCC and its effects on evolution are still not fully understood. Recently, some authors suggested, in a conceptual article, that MCC has the potential to promote or hamper speciation and hybridization if the effects of MCC are considered in a spatial setting, where this mechanism can homogenize or diversify the collective preference among different (sub)populations, depending on the rules from which MCC operates (Varela et al. 2018).
The objective of my current research is is to understand the role of MCC on ecology and evolution, when the effects of a spatial setting is considered. To achieve this goal, I am creating individual-(or agent-) based models to simulate the evolution of a population in such systems, and I am also planning to do some empirical research to validate the theoretical models.
About the speaker
Manuel Sapage graduated in Environmental Biology in the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, where he also obtained a Master degree in Conservation Biology, with a thesis on reproductive behaviour of diurnal birds of prey in captivity.
After his master’s degree Manuel Savage gained interest in behavioural ecology, especially in the topic of mate-choice copying, and in computer programming. During this time he mastered and taught courses in the R programming language and worked with the Stan and JAGS languages that focus on Bayesian statistics. He is currently enrolled in the Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution doctoral programme (BIODIV) at the University of Lisbon and has been working on empirical and theoretical models linking mate-choice copying and spatial dynamics.

About the talk
Sound is a very powerful and flexible mean for creating emotional engagement and conveying long-lasting subliminal impressions, yet it has been consistently underused in product and brand design over the last few decades. This talk will be a journey detailing the psychoacoustics behind the process of product sound design, case-studies in the use of sonic branding, and the new opportunities that arise from the integration of various interactive technologies, including ambient sensing and generative creation of sound design elements.
About the speaker
Pedro Duarte Pestana was born in Lisbon in 1975, and after a varied learning path, he has dedicated himself to an interdisciplinary career that always gravitates around sound and media. He has a Ph.D. in Computer Music and is currently a Gulbenkian Professor of Interactive Sound Design at UCP in Porto. He has led the Research Center in Science and Technology of the Arts at UCP and taught extensively in several Universities in Portugal. Working in intelligent systems applied to audio, he has helped found two software companies in Canada and worked as lead audio research and consultant in the audio software industry. As a sound engineer, he has worked with many prominent artists such as Teresa Salgueiro, Pedro Jóia, Mário Laginha, among others, and owns a studio that specializes in sound design for multimedia products. He has worked in several media installations, drawing from his skills with physical computing, most recently with artist Bill Fontana.

ABOUT THE TALK
As a consequence of the economic crisis in Europe, especially since 2008, the ideas and tactics of the Portuguese architects are expressed through small-scale inter- ventions and temporary objects. Under the new economic paradigm and facing the increasing intangibility of the large scale operations, designers are no longer nec- essarily subjugated to the idea of the built object. Given the difficulty of access to the traditional mechanisms of design and making of urban space – public competi- tions and public service - the new generations of architects reinvent the scale of intervention and material expression of their design. The lecture will introduce the work of Arquitectos Anonimos studio, a sample of this latest generations, and a reflex of new times and economies. In the implicit eulogy of anonymity one can read in their projects, they challenge of the existing notions of authorship and the exacerbated individualism associated with the previous start-system and the formal use of the city and its infrastructures.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER

The Official Inauguration Ceremony of the Ilha Verde Campus, shared by the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) and by the Saint Joseph Diocesan School 6 (CDSJ6), was held on May 10th 2019, at 3:30pm, in the Centenário de Fátima Auditorium.
Dr. Alexis Tam Chon Weng, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, presided on behalf of the Chief Executive of Macao SAR and distinguished guests included Mr. Ho Hau Wah, Vice-Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Mr. Xue Xiaofeng, Deputy Director of the Central People’s Government Liaison Office of the Macao S.A.R, Mr. Lionel Leong, Secretary for Economy and Finance, Dr. Wu Zhiliang, President of Board of Directors of Macao Foundation, Prof. Isabel Gil, Rector of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa.
The ceremony began with speeches by the His Excellency Don Stephen Lee, Bishop of Macao and Chancellor of the University and the School, Dr. Samuel Kio, Principal of CDSJ6, and Prof. Fr. Peter Stilwell, Rector of USJ, and a concluding word by His Excellency Secretary Alexis Tam.
After the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, a short video was shown registering the stages of the construction of the campus. The session in the auditorium ended with musical performances by CDSJ6 and USJ students. Visitors were then invited on a Campus Tour followed by USJ’s International Parade. The parade displayed the multicultural nature of the University’s community and marked the opening of this year’s edition of USJ’s International Cultural Fair & Languages Day, during which staff and students share traditions, costumes and national dishes.
The Catholic Diocese of Macao decided, in 2006, to provide a fully equipped academic campus for the University of Saint Joseph. To do so, it made available a plot of Diocesan land in the Ilha Verde District occupied by the Saint Joseph Diocesan School 6, on condition the new campus was built to house both the University and the School. The campus should provide the surrounding community with high quality educational, cultural and sporting facilities.
The initial concept for the new Campus was by internationally-renowned Japanese Architect, Koji Yagi. The actual design and developed project were the work of Architect Miguel CampinaFerreira and MPS – Macau Professional Services. The construction work was adjudicated to HCCG Building and Civil Engineering (Macau) Limited. The quantity surveyors were Currie &Brown (HK). The campus has a GFA of 38,145m2and was built between 2013 and 2017. Financial support was received from public funds, from the Catholic Diocese of Macao and from other esteemed donors who will be duly evoked on a Donor’s Wall, to be unveiled in the near future.
Typhoon Hato hit Macao on August 23rd2017, severely damaging all the facilities in the basement, causing the loss of valuable technical equipment, and destroying the entire 25,000 volumes of the Macao Ricci Institute’s library. Repairs and enhancement works are still, with the support of public funds and a generous donation of MOP 15 million by the Adelson Family Foundation.

On May 10th, from 5:10pm, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) held the International Cultural Fair & Languages Day (ICFLD) 2019 at the Ilha Verde Campus. The event kicked off with the USJ International Parade, an activity where USJ’s multiculturalism was greatly showcased and that marked the end of the Official Inauguration Ceremony of the Ilha Verde Campus, which took place earlier that day.
The annual event was presided by the Rector of the University of Saint Joseph, Prof. Peter Stilwell, and counted with the presence of the USJ senior management team, as well as distinguished guests.
Over 1,000 students, staff and members of the local community joined the celebration of more than 30 nationalities of the USJ Community, conveyed through performances of typical songs and dances, set-up of cultural booths, offering of traditional snacks and beverages and by encouraging conversations between people of different ethnicities.
The first edition of the international cultural fair occurred in 2010. Its main objective continues to be the sharing of cultures through the opportunity to learn about the features that characterise us and make us unique. This year, like last year, the fair was combined with the USJ Languages Day, further demonstrating the English-Chinese-Portuguese trilingual learning environment of the University.
The event was organised by the Public and International Relations Office and the Faculty of Humanities, with assistance from the Office for Student and Alumni Affairs, and with generous sponsorship by the Macao Foundation.

On 7 May 2019, the handbook Direito em Português. A Língua e a Escrita was launched at the Don Bosco Auditorium of the Ilha Verde Campus, after a public lecture where the new Centre for Social and Legal Studies of the School of Business and Law of the University of Saint Joseph was officially announced by the USJ Rector, Prof. Fr. Peter Stilwell.
The handbook is a project of the Department of Portuguese Studies (Faculty of Humanities, USJ) sponsored by the Macao Government's Higher Education Bureau (DSES). One of the strategic goals of the Department of Portuguese Studies is the production of teaching materials that facilitate the development of language skills in specific areas of Portuguese. This handbook is intended for Law students who are native speakers of Chinese, and it constitutes an eminently useful practical reference for lawyers and other legal practitioners. The handbook is especially notable for its didactic perspective based on authentic documents integral to the reality of the legal profession in MSAR.
The author, Margarida Conde, is a member of the Department of Portuguese of the University of Saint Joseph. She holds a degree in Philosophy and Humanities from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa and a Master's Degree in Portuguese Language and Culture, in Linguistic Studies, by the University of Macau.
She has taught Portuguese in several institutions of Macao, namely in the Centro de Formação dos Serviços de Administração e Função Pública (SAFP); in the Centro de Difusão de Línguas da Direção dos Serviços de Educação e Juventude; in Luso-Chinese Schools; the University of Macau and Instituto Português do Oriente (IPOR).
USJ celebrou o Lançamento do Manual “Direito em Português. A Língua e a Escrita”
O manual "Direito em Português. A Língua e a Escrita" foi lançado a 7 de Maio de 2019 no Auditório Don Bosco do Campus da Ilha Verde, depois de uma palestra onde o novo Centre for Social and Legal Studies da School of Business and Law da Universidade de São José (USJ) foi oficialmente anunciado pelo Reitor, Prof. Pe. Peter Stilwell.

On 7 May 2019, the Rector of University of Saint Joseph (USJ), Prof. Fr. Peter Stilwell, announced the official launching of the “Centre for Social and Legal Studies”, under their newly renamed “School of Business and Law”, at an event held at the Don Bosco Auditorium at USJ’s Ilha Verde Campus.
The event had the honour of the presence of Deputy Directors Chang Kun Hong, and Silvia Ho of Macao's Higher Education Bureau (DSES), as well as over 80 participants from the legal and academic industry, and students from different Higher Education Institutions.
During his opening speech, Prof. Stilwell, explained that USJ has been developing research and postgraduate programmes in legal studies. This year, the university officially established the Centre for Social and Legal Studies under the School of Business, and renamed the faculty School of Business and Law, to provide legal training for business leaders, entrepreneurs, and legal professionals.
For the launching of the Centre, USJ’s School of Business and Law invited the Vice-President, and Dean of Faculty of Law of the Porto Regional Centre of UCP, Prof. Manuel Fontaine Campos, to give a public lecture on International Law and Trade War. The lecture focused on the trade measures adopted by President Donald Trump, especially those regarding China, and the countermeasures adopted by the affected countries. The lecture resulted in some interesting discussions among participates during the Q&A session.
After the public lecture, USJ also launched a book “Direito em Português. A Língua e a Escrita” by Margarida Conde, lecturer at the Department of Portuguese of the Faculty of Humanities. The book was the result of a project subsidised by the Macao Government’s DSES.
For the coming academic year, the School of Business and Law will be offering two legal programmes: a Postgraduate Diploma in Legislative Science (in Portuguese); and a Master of Lusophone and International Public Law (in English) which was co-designed and will be co-delivered with professors from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP).

Last Friday, 6 May 2019, the Easter Mass was held at the Ilha Verde Campus of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) at 3:30 pm. The mass was celebrated by the Bishop of Macao and Chancellor of USJ, His Excellency Bishop Stephen Lee Bun Sang, at the Holy Cross Chapel with staff and students.
In the homily, the Bishop explained the meaning of Easter and the role of the staff and students of USJ as a Catholic institution. Through the first book of the New Testament, he emphasised that each of us is given a specific mission to carry out to witness the mystery of Christ’s resurrection, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). In his words, “We seldom believe that we are valuable to the society and community”, the Bishop expressed his sincere concern for all. With the intention to encourage the USJ Catholic community, he reiterated the significance of having a courage with the popular verse from the Gospel of Luke. “But even the hairs of your head are counted. Do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows” (Luke 12:7).
On 10th May, the Official Inauguration of the Saint Joseph Ilha Verde Campus will be held. The campus started operating in 2017 and earlier in March this year, the Ilha Verde campus celebrated the blessing with the presence of His Eminence Cardinal Fernando Filoni, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples.
The Official Inauguration will be followed by International Cultural Fair and Languages Day 2019, with the aim to provide an arena for sharing the values of international community in which the USJ students and staff are comprised of 50 different countries and nationalities.

Prof. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of the Republic of Portugal, took the time to receive the Chancellor, Bishop Lee, and the senior management of the University of Saint Joseph, during his brief visit to Macao. In his speech, at the official reception that followed, President Rebelo de Sousa called attention to how China and Portugal met in Macao, well before they met in either Beijing or Lisbon. In fact, he added, the city has for 500 years hosted a persistent dialogue between these two peoples and their longstanding cultures, while respecting their differences. So, as we look to the future, schools and universities are playing a vital role in that ongoing exchange – and he singled out the Portuguese School of Macao and the University of Saint Joseph.
