The University of Saint Joseph's Master of Communication and Media (MCM) will launch the first Open Class Exhibition titled “We Connect” to showcase students’ multimedia projects on Saturday, June 22nd, 2019, at Creative Macau (創意空間) at 2:30p.m.
The Open Class Exhibition “We Connect” implies that the core part of communication is about connection and interaction and involves four sessions: Macao-themed videos; eco-themed infographic posters; creative presentations and an interactive short movie.
The Macao-themed videos will display a number of short video content, showing the students’ own unique views of Macao. The poster exhibition outlines an environmental theme, demonstrating the state of the environment, provoking both awareness and dialogue of action to be done for our Earth. The creative presentations, produced in Pecha Kucha - a modern storytelling format in the industry - share the students’ start-up ideas. The exhibition ends with an interactive film, offering a postmodern version of the classic "Alice in Wonderland" to spark conversation on the variety of film-making.
“This Open Class Exhibition proves that the Master of Communication and Media is at the forefront of the contemporary information society. The Master programme has a strong reputation. Technical and practical topics are covered, ranging from audio-visual production to online digital publishing techniques, reflecting upon the entire range of modern platforms, and addressing topics dealing with the interrelationship between media, cultures, and many forms of social organisations” said Prof. José Manuel Simões, the Coordinator for the Department of Communication and Media of the University.
For more information regarding the exhibition, please contact Prof. José Manuel Simões at jmsimoes@usj.edu.mo or +853 6809 0809.

The Bishop Domingos Lam Centre for Research in Education (DLCRE) will open its operational research work in 29 June 2019. The Centre named for Bishop Emeritus of Macao, Don Domingos Lam Ka Tseung (澳門林家駿主教) is sited at the University of Saint Joseph, Ilha Verde Campus, and housed in the School of Education.
The DLCRE aims to create a world-class research environment and community that attracts the best researchers to conduct multi-disciplinary practice-oriented research, engage on knowledge exchange, assist the Diocese of Macau to support the work of the Catholics schools and collaborate with other higher education, and research institutions to explore forward-looking and innovative approaches to education within the strands areas of: Inclusive Education; Catholic Education; Leadership and Management; Early Years; ICT in Education; Curriculum and Pedagogy; Education and Society; Education and Wellbeing.
The official opening will be officiated by the H.E. Bishop of Macao Lee Bun-sang, Stephen and the Rector of USJ, Professor Fr. Peter Stilwell. The event is marked with two important activities. The opening will start with a public lecture on education titled ‘Our Commitment to Catholic Education: Looking to the Future with Confidence’ addressed by two world-wide renown and prominent Professors in the field of Catholic Education, Prof. Keith Morrison, Vice-rector of USJ and Director of DLCRE and Rev. Professor Stephen Morgan, Dean of the Faculty of Religious Studies at USJ. After the public lecture, there will be the launching of the book ‘Perspectives on Inclusion’ with Prof. Ana Correia, Dean of the School of Education at USJ and one of the authors as the presenter of the book.
ABOUT THE TALKS
In the rapidly changing times we live in, there is little room for complacency when it comes to Catholic Education. In line with the historical recognition of the contribution of Catholic schools, the need for schools of the ‘Catholic’ denomination and the teaching of Religious/Moral Education around the world is facing many challenges. Macao is no different. Since Catholicism first planted its roots in the Chinese territory in 1557 through the Bula Super Specula Militantis Ecclesiae, Catholic Education has grown, changed, adapted and been threatened.
The talks recall the empirical investigation of Catholic schooling in Macao and the essential of two documents in the field of education: Gravissimum Educationis and Ex Corde Ecclesiae.
The speakers will point out the challenges to which Catholic educational institutions are called to respond, with the development of their own specific mission. It will also engage the current issues of evidence-based education and the ‘what works’ agenda in educational research.
It is our hope that the issues that the speakers will raise should be of interest to a broad range of educators, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners alike and will guide us in our proposed endeavour to achieve our set goals.

ABOUT THE BOOK
I
n an inclusive education system, educators engage with increasing their understanding of individual differences, especially in regard to learning, and develop and adjust learning and assessment tasks and contexts in ways that make them accessible and appropriate for all their students regardless of starting ability levels, interests, learning strengths and weakness. In inclusive schools, diverse approaches to learning are valued and all learners are challenged and supported to be successful in their learning goals.
Macao has begun the journey to develop and increasingly inclusive education system. This book has been written as the journey is beginning and explores some of the different perspectives towards inclusion and interpretation of “inclusive education” within the Macao’s education system and the wider community at this time. The main aims of the research presented in this book are to understand the different views and roles of staff in Macao schools and in the wider community. The book raises question about how inclusion in Macao might unfold and identifies areas where efforts may be needed to progress inclusive education. Donna Couzens

ABOUT THE TALK
Polar regions including the Arctic and Antarctic are of significance to global climate, oceanographic conditions as well as environmental and ecological changes. China started the first national expedition for Arctic in 1999 and established its national research station (named as Yellow River Station) in King's Bay of Svalbard Isles in 2007. This represents the enthusiasm and responsible actions of Chinese in contributing to scientific research and international collaboration for polar protection. In connection, a team of Hong Kong and Macau scientists and environmentalists visited Longyearbyen and surroundings (79°N16°E) in April 2019 exploring the ecological, oceanographic and biological interests in the higher arctic. This updates the latest geographic situations and our contributions to innovative and environmental research.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER

On June 10th, 2019, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) commemorated the Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities by attending several celebratory activities in Macao. USJ was represented by its Rector, Prof. Fr. Peter Stilwell, the Faculty of Humanities' Emeritus Prof. Maria Antónia Espadinha and the Coordinator for the Department of Portuguese Studies of the Faculty of Humanities, Prof. Vera Borges.
The celebrations started with Portugal's National Anthem played by the Public Security Police Force of Macao and a flag raising ceremony at the Consulate General of Portugal in Macao. Next, crowds gathered at the Luís de Camões Garden, where activities like poetry recitals by High School students, traditional Portuguese folklore dances and a visit to the Camões Grotto to place flowers next to the bust of Luís Vaz de Camões, a famous Portuguese poet that once lived in Macao and whom the garden is named after, occurred.
Finally, the Consul-General of Portugal in Macao and Hong Kong, Ambassador Paulo Cunha Alves, hosted a Reception for the Portuguese Community and friends at the Official Residency of the Consul-General, which counted with the presence of distinguished guests, including the Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region, Mr Chui Sai On.

About the talk
With the recent development and use of information technology and communication systems, individuals, companies and public entities have tremendously benefited in terms of information exchange and services delivery. However, several risks are associated with this technological development as different entities and individuals are exposed to a non-traditional type of Financial crime.
For the last 30 years, financial crime has increasingly become of concern to governments throughout the world and its substantial threat to the development of economies and their stability is no longer questioned.
It covers the following illegal activities: fraud; electronic crime; money laundering; terrorist financing; bribery and corruption; market abuse and insider dealing; information security.
In the Greater Bay Area, Macau and Hong Kong have respectively established a regulatory framework dealing with the financial crime.
Therefore, the purpose of this round table discussion is to analyse the recent development of the regulatory framework dealing with financial crime in Macao and the controversies about the nexus between cyber security and the right to privacy and free speech both in Macao and Hong Kong.

The “Step with Love, Leaps with Art – Asia Pacific Accessible Art Festival 2019”, co-hosted by Caritas Macau and the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), was held from June 3 to 5, 2019. The event attracted forty-one participating and supporting organisations from fifteen countries and territories in the Asia Pacific Region, including Macao. More than 250 people with disabilities and agency representatives attended various activities of the event, which included art workshops and accessible tourism. Over 100 pieces of art works in different styles and from different cultures were displayed at USJ’s Ilha Verde Campus.
In order to highlight the basic rights of people with disabilities to enjoy arts and cultural creativity, the “Step with Love, Leaps with Art – Asia Pacific Accessible Art Festival” has been held in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao since 2016. Through a series of exchange activities, it helps to establish an art and cultural sharing platform for people with disabilities in Asia and the Pacific, strengthen cultural interaction and inheritance across the region, and enhance cooperation among non-governmental organisations in neighbouring areas.
This year, the 3-day "Asia Pacific Accessible Art Festival" was held in Macao. Eighteen rehabilitation and disability organisations from fourteen countries and territories in the Asia Pacific Region, including Australia, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Taiwan, Hong Kong served as co-organising units of the event. There were also twenty local rehabilitation and disability organisations participating as supporting units. Representatives from the participating organisations hosted twenty-four workshops to exchange their artistic achievements and experiences.
The opening ceremony was held at USJ at 3:00p.m. on June 3. After the lion dance, Reverend Bishop Stephen LEE, Diocese of Macau, Mr. WU Feng, Assistant to Deputy Head, Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macau Special Administrative Region, Mr. AU Weng Chi, Member of the Board of Directors, Macau Foundation, Ms. IU Wai Man, Head of Department of Performing Arts Development, Cultural Affairs Bureau, Macau SAR Government, Ms. SOU Chi Kuan, Head of Rehabilitation Service Division, Social Welfare Bureau, Macau SAR Government, Mr. LEONG I On, Head of Secondary and Vocational Technical Education Division, Education and Youth Affairs Bureau, Macau SAR Government, Mr. George VU, Representative of Artists with Disability, Mr. Paul PUN, Secretary General of Caritas Macau and Prof. Keith MORRISON, Acting Rector, USJ officiated and kicked off the event.
Mr. Paul PUN, Secretary General of Caritas Macau, said that art is widely inclusive and allows everyone to participate. Through the art platform, it can promote mutual communication and relationship. Some individuals with disabilities may not know how to express their inner feelings in words, but through arts they are able to reflect and express their emotions so that others can understand their feelings better. Arts can enrich the mental world and it can be presented through works of art, enabling people to have a more integrative and fulfilling life.
Prof. Keith MORRISON, Acting Rector of USJ, pointed out that the event, held at the USJ, was very meaningful as it is in line with the University’s strategic development to foster inclusiveness, fairness and respectful diversity in the community life of the University, particularly, to ensure equity and transparency in procedures governing access, opportunities and treatment of all, regardless of healthy or students with disabilities suffering from various difficulties. He also said that the perseverance, commitment, friendliness of the students with disabilities, who participated in the University’s programme in the past, as well as their contribution to the society, not only gave him a deep impression, but also enriched the lives of others.
At the opening ceremony, Mr. CHAN Ka Keong, who is legally blind, performed a piano solo of two melodious songs. His exquisite accomplishments won warm applause from the audience, while the dance performance of Escola Caritas de Macau pushed the lively atmosphere to a climax.
On June 3 and 4, 143 pieces of art works including paintings, knots, accessories, wood carvings etc. created by people with disabilities are being displayed at USJ’s Ilha Verde Campus. During the closing activity, it was announced that Thailand will host the 2020 APAAF.
The event was sponsored by the Macao Foundation and the Macao Cultural Heritage Association.

In an aim to showcase the graduating students’ projects, the Faculty of Creative Industries' Department of Communication and Media held two successive events on May 29th, Wednesday: the Opening of the "Emotion" Multimedia Exhibition and the Premiere of "4 Short Stories You Won't Believe".
The “Emotion” Multimedia Exhibition attempts to encapsulate the subject of intuitive feelings interpreted through photography and video production. The Opening was officially held at the Kent Wong Exhibition Gallery of the University's Ilha Verde Campus at 6:00PM. The students’ works (photography and videos) will be open for public viewing, with free admission, until June 10th, 2019, during the University's opening hours.
Each of the students’ works freely explores the central theme of the exhibition, with reverence to specific subjects expressed through their outputs, such as desire, death, abstract representations of life and human connections, among others. The photography exhibition not only showcases the students’ creative eye in capturing vivid imagery, but also in adding more depth to their works through photo manipulation and technical treatment.

The Premiere of "4 Short Stories You Won't Believe" took place at the Auditório Centenário de Fátima of the University's Ilha Verde Campus, at 7:00PM. The video installation showcased a summary of students' works throughout their course, before the screening of four short mockumentaries that touched various subject matters revolving around the human psyche, including interpersonal interaction with the community and dealing with technology. The purpose of the documentaries was to further debate and raise awareness of the concept of "fake news", given that the challenge given to students was to create fiction that was highly believable and could be perceived as actual reality.

The Communication and Media Department of the University of Saint Joseph's Faculty of Creative Industries believes in the monumental role of creative expression in the development of its students as future multimedia creators. According to the head of the department, Professor José Manuel Simões,
“this exhibition largely focuses on advancing its students to be more than just about producing outputs, but to be visionaries in delivering messages that generate meanings, expand knowledge and enhance the community’s ability to communicate in a fast-paced world of technology and platforms. It also offers the necessary fundamental instrument for its students to function in different fields of expertise, and prepare them with advanced skills towards achieving their future goals.”
For more information regarding the exhibition, please contact Professor José Manuel Simões, via telephone at +853 6809 0809 or via email at jmsimoes@usj.edu.mo.

On May 17th, 2019, a delegation of School of Business and Law (SBL) students from the Bachelor of Business Administration programme visited the Zhuhai Macau Cross-Border Industrial Zone. The visit was jointly organised jointly by the University of Saint Joseph and Seng Fung Jewellery Group. The students were given an extensive tour of the Seng Fung Jewellery Group facilities in the Cross Border Zone and Ms. Sarah Yao, Deputy Director of the Cross Border Comprehensive Management Bureau, was also on hand to present the policies and future developments of the zone.
In addition, the students visited other Macao businesses stationed in the Cross-Border Zone to further understand the current business environment of Macao businesses in China. This activity follows the recent developments of the “Greater Bay Area” initiative policy by both the regional and central governments.

The event was made possible by Mr. Manny Lee, Managing Director of Seng Fung Jewelry Group, whom graciously granted the use of the Seng Fung training room for the interactive talk between the students and the Zhuhai authorities. Other companies visited were; “Azona Enterprises Limited”, “Water Crytal Love Limites”, “Latin America and Portuguese Speaking Countries Products Exchange”.

SBL believes it is vital for students to understand the changing business environments around them, being committed to providing a comprehensive education with real life networking and learning opportunities for both local and visiting students through our continuing efforts to serve the betterment of education in both Macao and China.
SBL would also like to extend a word of appreciation for the support received from the Zhuhai Free Trade Zone Administrative Committee and the Macao Foundation.

Researchers from the Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) of the University of Saint Joseph have determined, for the first time, Macao's Age. The study, published in Geoscience Frontiers, used state of the art geochronological methods on ancient zircon crystals (one of the toughest minerals on the planet) selected from granitic rocks of Macao to show that the territory was generated during the Jurassic Period, between 156 to 165 million years ago (Ma).
Surprisingly, the territory was not all formed at the same time. It was emplaced during two distinct pulses of magmatism that occurred in Southeast China during the Mesozoic Era (a period where Dinosaurs roamed the Earth), related with north-westward subduction of the Paleo-Pacific plate under the Eurasian plate. The study shows that the islands of Taipa and Coloane were the first to be formed, 165 to 163 Ma, and the Macao island was the last to be generated, 157 to 156 Ma. Later, during the Cretaceous period, those granitic rocks were cut by volcanic dykes (dacitic rocks), with some of the younger dikes being emplaced less than 120 Ma (e.g. “Vale das Borboletas” in Coloane).
Additionally, this work also found that the magmas that later gave origin to the granitic rocks of Macao were produced by the melting of very ancient infra-crustal rocks dated from Archean to Paleo-Proterozoic ages (older than 1600 Ma).
This is the first study about the Geology of Macao published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal and resulted from a research collaboration, initiated in 2015, bringing together scientists from Macao and Portugal. The project (Mag.I.C.) was funded by the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) and coordinated by Professor Ágata Alveirinho Dias, Professor and Researcher at ISE and also a Researcher at Instituto Dom Luiz - IDL - University of Lisbon. It also had the participation of Professor João Mata from IDL as a team member, Pedro Quelhas as a doctoral student of the project, and Dr. Maria Luisa Ribeiro as a consultant.
This work will be also presented in the upcoming international Goldschmidt conference, which will be held in Barcelona in August 2019 (view Abstract here).
