On 28th August 2021, GEGCLEAR and DSEDJ’s Division of Teacher and Research Staff Development co-hosted the ‘Early Education Professional Development Advanced Course: Early Literacy Support (2020-2021)’ (Unit 2: Teaching in Support Program – Teaching Strategies, Class B). A total of 38 kindergarten teachers from Macau Baptist College and Escola Dom João Paulino participated in the session.
To compile with the recent heightened anti-epidemic measures of the Macau Health Bureau, face-to-face instructions were called off and replaced by online mode for this Teacher Training Program. To ensure a smooth session flow, the project team coordinated with the participating schools by arranging grouping and dissemination of relevant materials in advance for teacher participants’ better preparation.
Online mode, however, did not constrain the interactions between teachers and speakers. After logging into Zoom with a passcode, teachers attended the seminar on the three teaching domains in GEGCLEAR’s support program, namely ‘Language Comprehension’, ‘Prerequisite of Text Coding’ and ‘Text Coding’. Following the speaker’s elaboration on each domain, teachers discussed using the ‘Breakout Room’ function to design teaching activities. Speakers and project team members entered each of these 11 rooms to provide teaching and technical assistance suggestions.
After the discussion, teachers returned to the main conference room, and each group demonstrated the teaching activities they had designed. Participants role-played as teachers and students to explain their teaching process. Teachers worked well with each other remotely, and each group presented their thoroughly planned activity. After each group’s presentation, speakers from the project team gave their feedback and suggestions. Additionally, Ann Chen, Director of Macau Baptist College kindergarten and one of the speakers of the session, acknowledged each group’s effort and offered constructive feedback. She hopes the teachers could optimize their teaching in the future.
Class A of the current session was held on 17th July 2021 in hybrid mode. Session 3 ‘Adjustments in the Support Program’ will be held in two classes. The mode of instructions for these two classes in session 3 will be pertinent to the latest anti-epidemic measures.
CALL FOR PAPERS: Warranted Catholic Belief: Plantinga's Religious Epistemology and the Catholic Tradition
Online Conference hosted by the University of St Joseph, Macao -- 18th-19th March, 2022
Alvin Plantinga and his fellow Reformed Epistemologists’ claim that Christian belief can be “properly basic” has transformed analytic assessments of how the Christian faith can possess positive epistemic status. However, explicit reactions to “Reformed Epistemology” from a Catholic perspective – which mainly date from the early 1990’s – vary from hostile incredulity to the mixture of appreciation and considered critique typified by the best-known Catholic response to Plantinga (Linda Zagzebski ed. Rational Faith: A Catholic Response to Reformed Epistemology (1993)).
But in the thirty years since Rational Faith was published, philosophical evaluations of Reformed Epistemology and its relationship to traditional Christian accounts of faith and reason have developed considerably. Epistemologists have offered a variety of fresh critiques, defences, and adaptions of Plantinga’s account of warranted faith. Additionally, detailed historical research has compared Plantinga’s epistemology to the work of many historical theologians and philosophers, including Catholic thinkers such as Augustine, Aquinas, Scotus, Newman, Balthasar, Maritain, and MacIntyre.
The Warranted Catholic Belief conference (online, 18th-19th March 2022) will begin a long-overdue reconsideration of the relationship between Reformed Epistemology and Catholic thought. We wish to highlight the influence of Reformed Epistemology as an apologetic project and its potential for adoption, adaption or critique from a Catholic perspective. A further goal is to stimulate historical conversation about the affinities – and differences – between Plantinga’s epistemology and historical or contemporary Catholic accounts of faith. Finally, we are keen to hear from non-Catholics about their views on the theological underpinnings of Reformed Epistemology.
We welcome papers which:
Appropriate, evaluate, or critique Reformed Epistemology from a Catholic theological and/or philosophical perspective.
Compare and/or contrast the religious epistemology of Plantinga or other Reformed Epistemologists to accounts of faith and reason given by influential Catholic thinkers.
Examine ways in which influential Catholic philosophers and/or theologians adumbrate or approximate themes in or relevant to Reformed Epistemology.
Assess the compatibility between Catholic theology and Reformed Epistemology from non-Catholic Christian perspectives (Eastern Orthodox, Baptist, Pentecostal …)
Provide Catholic analyses or appropriations of Plantinga’s Evolutionary Argument Against Naturalism.
Examine the potential for Catholics to use Reformed Epistemology in formation and evangelism outside the Academy.
Presentations will be 20 mins in length and are to be followed by 10 mins of questions. Please send short abstracts (100-300 words) to tyler.mcnabb@usj.edu.mo by Sunday 31st October 2021.
All papers accepted for presentation at the Warranted Catholic Belief Conference will be considered for inclusion in a planned volume of essays exploring the relationship between Catholicism and Reformed Epistemology.
The Institute of Science and Environment, with a team lead by Prof. Karen Tagulao, received another grant from the Drop by Drop project, to continue their work on the local wetlands. This year’s project is more focused on the role of wetlands (mangroves) as a nature-based solution for climate change mitigation and adaptation for a coastal city like Macao. Their important roles as carbon sinks and as buffer against water related risks, like flooding due to more frequent severe weather events, will be evaluated through field and laboratory experiments/investigations. The project also involves community engagement activities such as exhibitions, talks and field trips, in order to raise awareness about the value of wetlands for climate change adaptation and mitigation in the city. USJ is committed to addressing environmental challenges through scientific research and community outreach, in order to contribute to making Macao a more sustainable city.
On Friday, July 16, the Department of Creative Industries of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), in collaboration with the Macau Productivity and Technology Transfer Center (CPTTM), presented the second Bachelor of Fashion Design programme graduates Fashion Show. The event showcased the student's final graduation projects, centred on the theme "CONNECTIONS".
The event was the culmination of 2013's agreement between the USJ and the CPTTM to co-organise a unique four-year programme in Macau, the Bachelor of Fashion Design, to discover and foster qualified local fashion designers. While the University teaches theoretical/practical classes, the Centre provides industry practical training to educate and encourage new blood to enter the fashion design industry.
The Fashion Show proposed four radical concepts for Macao's Fashion, showcasing the student's innovative collections. They brought together diverse projects in fashion design where their talents were nurtured through the collaboration mentioned above during the four-year Fashion Design programme. An in-depth academic and technical training structure was developed where students gained appropriate fashion design and creative skills to boost their professional status and build their careers in the industry.
Each student's collection consisted of five/six garments, with twenty garments being presented. Each collection was fashionably designed, showing their creativity and talent, using new technologies like Laser-cutting and LED lights.
Students who participated in the Bachelor of Fashion Design Capstone Projects were Alina Garcia, Zoe Lei, Gabi Silva and Celia Yuen, all supervised by Prof. Maria João Nunes Das.
#fashionUSJ / #fashionshowUSJFlicker:https://flic.kr/s/aHsmWgP8kzModels: Scofield, João, Mira, Guga, Felipe, AnastassiaGraduate Designer: Alina GarciaCollection Name: Nick & Jordan - Grab life by the contrast
The concept of this collection is derived from the consequences of the 2019 pandemic situation with the theme “Connections” that can be physical or spiritual. This “connection” symbolises the bonding among people. It presents the current young generation’s lifestyle and attitudes, which represents the future of human communities. It is also symbolising the aesthetics of the youth power, energetic and fearless. It is a twist of “Retro-futurism”, how we are, and how we will be in the future. “Pair” is an essential element in this collection, and two complementary colours are chosen to show the contrast and the reflection of bonding between people. The screen-print technique is employed to convey the idea of the 1920s, art-deco patterns. Quality materials such as silk and merino wool are this high-end collect.
People nowadays have difficulty expressing their real emotions, either to their boss, friends, or the one they love. What if the feeling is an object that everyone can see, no guessing, no misunderstanding, losing someone unique and essential in your life. The collection “Intimate Delivery” was, then, “born.” According to the Oxford dictionary, the word “Intimate” means being close to each other amicably and privately, while “Delivery” here is not only about conveying the message or delivering a parcel but more about the meanings behind, the feelings of the sender, the recipient, the transmitter and the item itself. In these five outfits, the neutral tones are the primary colours, as “love” doesn’t have to be red; the garments contain hidden antonym hearts attached on different parts on the blazers; pleats and gathers are used to create the movement of love and care.
Currently, our society is in constant change to adapt to the consequences generated by the 2019 pandemic. Nevertheless, all countries seek to accelerate their economies and make their population aware of this new reality. The collection “Rhythm” was created in 2021, and this collection is based on blue colours and patterns applying fluorescent colours, also fluorescent embroidery. I also used technology: LED lights and software that controls the lights according to the ambience sound. Seeking to portray the commitment of all people to accelerate the economy of their countries, I created the Rhythm collection. The wealth of a country depends on the economic impact, the economic achievement caused by people’s work and consumption. Therefore as a collective, we will be able to contribute to the country’s economic growth. We can see the busyness of a country to know how many efforts the people contribute, and it shows the rhythm of a country’s economy.
Currently, fashion, in a way, represents every one of us. It is a way that we can use to express what we feel and who we are as individuals. This collection called “EMBRACE” aims to portray the situation we live in and have lived in ever since the pandemic started. We will still have to face many challenges ahead. Since the very beginning, when this virus shocked everyone, we have witnessed various obstacles that the human race had to face. In a world where travelling has facilitated many ways for us to meet with anyone globally, it is hard to know that although we have all these resources, we cannot use them like we used to due to the current situation. The EMBRACE collection aims to transmit love, comfort, and safety from carefully chosen materials to adverse yet straightforward designs with warm colours. It all gives a casual chic look to whoever wants to wear and be a part of the collection. In total, we have five outfits that make this collection.

On 17th July, 2021, GEG Chinese Literacy Education and Research Project (GEGCLEAR) and DSEDJ’s (Education and Youth Development Bureau) Division of Teacher and Research Staff Development co-hosted the ‘Early Education Professional Development Advanced Course: Early Literacy Support (2020-2021)’ (Unit 2: Teaching in Support Program – Teaching Strategies, Class A). The session was held at the Dom Bosco Auditorium at the Ilha Verde Campus of the University of Saint Joseph.
Teachers from the four participating schools in the project attended this Class A training course, all of whom have completed the Unit 1 ‘Initiating the Support Program Step-by-Step’ course in May 2021. A total of 62 kindergarten teachers from Colégio Santa Rosa de Lima (Chinese Section), Lou Hau High School Affiliated Kindergarten, Fu Luen School and Our Lady of Fatima Girls' School (listed in no particular order) attended the class in hybrid mode with speakers from Hong Kong and Macau delivering the training via Zoom and on-site instructions and sharing.
There are two sessions in the Unit 2 training which focuses on introducing the content, features, teaching resources and methods of instruction in the GEGCLEAR support group program. As the support program would be initiated in all project schools in the upcoming school year, the two sessions aim to enhance teachers’ understanding of the program in terms of teaching and to prepare them for teaching in the support groups. Three speakers from the GEGCLEAR Hong Kong team, including the project’s director Professor Cheng Pui-Wan and Associate Directors Terry Tse and Gloria Ho first discussed about the support program’s teaching environment settings and materials using the actual recordings and teaching environment settings from existing support groups for demonstration. They then illustrated the three teaching domains in the support program, namely, ‘Language Comprehension’, ‘Prerequisite of Text Coding’ and ‘Text Coding’, respectively, unfolding the language elements and recommended corresponding teaching materials in each domain.
After the instructions of each domain, participating teachers designed and demonstrated their teaching activities to the whole class by adopting the teaching materials and resources provided by GEGCLEAR. Participating teachers got into groups and role-played as teachers and kindergarteners to demonstrate the actual teaching process. They combined their self-designed materials together with the provided resources to facilitate their teaching, their teaching activities were prepared and conducted vividly which engaged the other teacher-audiences. After each group’s demonstration, audiences in other groups offered their feedback and suggestions to the demonstrating group. This facilitated stimulation and exchanges among teachers and encouraged learning from each other. Two Macau speakers, Professor Miranda Mak from the University of Macau and Amanda Lei, director of Colégio Santa Rosa de Lima Kindergarten (Chinese Section), also shared their comments and suggestions in optimising the quality of the teaching. Participating teachers reflected that the demonstrations have enhanced their teaching skills in providing support for kindergarteners’ Chinese literacy.
Subsequent sessions of the course would be held in the upcoming months. Class B of Unit 2 will be held on 28th August, and the two sessions of Unit 3 ‘Accommodation in Support Program’ are expected to be held in September, 2021.

The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) commissioned the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) to elaborate the “Conceptual Masterplan for the Public Domain of the Southern Inner Harbour” with the intent of rehabilitating and optimising the public realm of this district. The project is being developed by teachers and students of the USJ Architecture Programmes, coordinated by Prof. Nuno Soares.
The public domain is a critical element of the urban environment – encompassing streets, parks, plazas and public facilities – and is widely considered as a crucial public asset that connects and services the private domains and provides public goods and amenities for the population. This project offers a unique possibility to formulate a new vision and ambition for the Inner Harbour public spaces. The development of this master plan will guide the future transformation of the public domain in this district and contribute to its holistic and sustainable development, which will benefit the local community, visitors, and the city as a whole.
This project follows the United Nation’s sustainable development goals, specifically addressing the SDG 3 - Good health and well-being; SDG 9 - Industry, innovation and infrastructure; SDG 11 - Sustainable cities and communities; SDG 16 - Peace, justice and strong institutions; and SDG 17 - Partnerships for the goals. It is a collaborative effort lead by USJ engaging a talented team of external consultants and with CURB Center for Architecture and Urbanism as the research partner.
The master plan’s implementation will potentially capture the synergies generated from the major developments in the district, fostering long-term liveability and promoting the quality of life of the city and its population.
The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) is organising the first of a series of seminars about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) - SDG 2: Zero Hunger and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
The event aims to bring local and international experts from different sectors together for talks, sharing sessions and round table discussions about solutions and strategies to achieve the SDGs and tackle the challenges facing the world today.
Our target audience for this seminar are those working on food production and food sustainability, but all those interested in sustainability are welcome to join.

In order to promote cooperation and exchanges in the field of higher education between Jiangsu and Macao, and to broaden the international vision of Jiangsu university students, the 2021 Jiangsu Provincial Government Scholarship Programme of Overseas Studies for Undergraduates was launched, with the official opening ceremony taking place on the morning of July 12 at the Ilha Verde Campus of University of Saint Joseph.
This exchange programme is jointly organised by Jiangsu Education Services for International Exchange, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), and the National Conditions Education Association (Macau). The plan will engage a thousand of outstanding students from Jiangsu Province in curriculum instruction and cultural exchange activities in Macao universities during the summer holiday. Among them, 155 college students have been selected to study at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ).
The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) is cooperating with other overseas universities such as Cambridge University, King's College London, and the University of Toronto to provide 17 two-week high-intensity online and offline courses. There will be 11 online courses, including International Business and Leadership Management, Artificial Intelligence, and Biology of Disease; Offline courses are also delivered at the University of Saint Joseph to provide students with diverse learning conditions.
Prof. Stephen Morgan, Rector of USJ, welcomed the arrival of students on behalf of the University in the welcome speech. During the opening ceremony, Zheng Xing, Deputy Director of the Jiangsu Education Center for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Education Exchange, and Wang Haitao, Chairman of National Conditions Education Association (Macau) said that it is a rare opportunity for students to take these courses especially because of the impact of COVID-19 and they hoped everyone would make good use of these summer courses to learn and connect.
A number of guests were invited to witness the opening ceremony with more than one hundred students present, including Li Yongle, representative of the Department of Education and Youth Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR, Ding Shaoxiong, Deputy Director of Macao Education and Youth Development Bureau, Wang Gang, Director of Macao Office of Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits, Cen Zhanping, Member of Jiangsu CPPCC Standing Committee and Chairman of the Macau Jiangsu Friendship Association, Chen Zhiling, Chairman of Macau Chinese Excellent Traditional Culture Association, Prof. Álvaro Barbosa, Vice Rector of USJ, and Prof. Keith Morrison, Vice Rector of USJ.
According to the World Economic Forum, the fashion industry produces 10% of all carbon emissions and is the second-largest consumer water supply. About 35% of all microplastics — tiny pieces of plastic that never biodegrade — in the ocean came from the laundering of synthetic textiles (IUCN, 2017). The increasingly fast fashion means most items have short life spans and end up in landfills in a few months. Indeed, the fashion industry is considered one of the worst pollutants, second only to the oil industry.
To raise awareness of these issues and empower the next generation to have a more sustainable approach to the consumption and production of fashion products, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) and its Department of Creative Industries have been promoting a series of sustainability workshops for its Fashion Design students.
In the academic year of 2019/2020, students were taught about sustainable fashion production through online workshops. Fashion students were instructed to use sustainable techniques and alternative materials such as plastic bags.
In the academic year of 2020/2021, the FAH partnered with the Salvation Army Cloths Recycling Program in Macao, promoting fashion students’ up-cycling projects by collecting used clothing from the locals, up-cycle and re-sell them at low prices to raise funds to support underprivileged residents. The students discussed strategies to implement concepts such as circular economy in their practice as fashion designers, reflecting on opportunities for reproducibility, scalability, and marketability of textile waste and textiles created from waste.
As part of the Department of Creative Industries, Creative Days Exhibitions and Workshop 2021, a sustainable and creative fashion workshop with the theme reuse, recycle, recreate with a recycling programme provider in Macao is in the pipeline.
The FAH expects to continue these activities in the future to contribute to the more innovative and sustainable fashion industry; in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), namely with SDG 9: Industry and infrastructure, SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities, and SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production.

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) has established a number of volunteering and internship programs, in collaboration with Caritas Macao in order to promote good health and well-being in Macao.
Caritas, a longtime partner of USJ, is one of the largest and most comprehensive NGOs offering social support to the community in Macao. Their aim is to serve most the needy and marginalised groups in society improving their well-being.
The catholic organisation manages several institutions that provide: services for the elderly and people with mental and physical disabilities, such as hosteling, health care, housework assistance, transportation, and a 24-hour emergency support; a community mental health hotline; and services targeting the economically deprived, youth, and children.
Since 2018, every year, about 20 students from the Bachelor of Social Work take part in short term volunteering programs in these institutions. In 2019/2020, about 19, and in 2020/2021 about 32 of our students, participated in these volunteering activities.
Additionally, many of the Bachelor and Master programme students in the areas of Psychology and Social Work complete their internship within these institutions. In 2019/2020, about 14, and in 2020/2021 about 11 of our students, participated in these internship programs.
These students have been empowered to apply the skills and competences acquired during their studies, in areas such as school counselling; elderly day centres and nursing homes; mental health helpline for suicide prevention; as well as, support to children with disabilities, youth at risk, expatriates, and immigrant workers.
The University express its great appreciation to Caritas, and its commitment to continue this partnership in the future, and together contribute to a healthier Macao and to the well-being of its population.
Promoting good health and well-being is an important goal the United Nations established as one of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The SDGs provide a blue-print for a more just, inclusive, and resilient society.

As part of its plastic management strategy, since December 2020, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) has been hosting a plastic sorting and collection event on the second Saturday of every month, in partnership with local NGO Macao for Waste Reduction.
Single use plastics are used only once but lasts virtually forever, making them one of the worse pollutants on land and in the oceans. USJ is aware of that, and aims to increasingly eliminate plastic on-campus, as well as to help the community explore sustainable alternatives and better plastic waste management strategies
Eliminating plastic and using alternative reusable products is the best solutions, yet while we transition to a plastic free world, we can reduce the destructive impact of plastic on ecosystems by recycling it. To make recycling possible, plastic must be correctly sorted into different types.
In our monthly events, students, staff, and the outside community are invited to bring their recyclables to campus and receive training on the best way of sorting it. The materials are then sent to suitable recycling plants in Macao and abroad (Click here to view where the collected items go).
Until June 2021, we sorted more than 45 kg of plastic waste, plus 80 kg of paper and 8 kg of metal waste (Click here to view the database). This partnership will be maintained during the next academic year, and in the future, in order to help make Macao a more sustainable city.
In order to improve the professionalism of Macao's psychological professionals, especially their practical ability to identify and manage depressive cases, the Macau Society of Registered Psychotherapists (MSRP) held a Guide and Discussion Seminar about Group Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) for Depression on June 28, 2021, at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ). The seminar served as a platform for professionals who are concerned about mental health well-being to exchange experiences, and also raised the attention of different sectors in the community to care about depression.
Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the society and the lives of its citizens have received the greatest guarantee being under the leadership of Macao SAR Government. For Macao, which is in the post-pandemic recovery stage, the daily life of the citizens is undoubtedly still affected by the global pandemic to various degrees. The changes and conflicts arise in employment, study, family and or in interpersonal relationship will affect the sense of well-being of individuals. The Macao SAR Government provided a lot of mental and psychosocial support. For instance, the establishment of a four-level barrier-free referral system, which its citizens who encounter emotional distress in their daily lives could actively seek assistance from professional medical services.
MSRP aims to support psychological professionals’ understanding and facilitate their practical skills in treatment on depression by organising the Guide and Discussion Seminar on the Group Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) for Depression. The World Health Organization (WHO) published the manual about Group Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) for Depression (English Version) in 2016, which was recognised and clinically proven that this is an effective treatment for depression.
The seminar was guided by Mr. Henry Lao, Chairman of MSRP, Director Ms. Josephine Wong, and Ms. Helen Lao, who is also the Psychological Counsellor of USJ. At the seminar, clinical experiences about treatment of depression were shared to facilitate discussion and learning. There were nearly 20 participants at the seminar on the day, including registered psychotherapists, psychological counsellors from different social service units, and students from the departments of psychology, social work and special education. The responses from the participants were positive. They were enthusiastic by showing strong interest in learning professional knowledge, and indicated that they would apply and promote such knowledge in practical work in the future. At the same time, they hoped that there would be more professional training related to psychotherapy in the future.
There are increasing demands for psychological professional services from the community in recent years. The first demographically representative investigation of adult depression research conducted by a local academic institution estimated that about 30,000 citizens may need psychosocial support services. MSRP will continuously and closely work with the Health Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, to pay attention and support the mental health of the citizens. In addition, MSRP will comply to the requirement on the continuous professional development so to improve the quality of Macao's psychotherapy services in the future. There will be more training activities with the objectives to enhance the professional abilities and quality of psychological services, to promote the professional development of psychotherapy, and at the same time improve the mental health of Macao citizens.
