Students of the Faculty of Business and Law immersed in a cultural exploration study tour at the Macao Museum where they explored Macao’s “East meets West” heritage and its historical significance as a trading port and a city of cultural and knowledge exchange.

In support of the Macao government’s goal to strengthen cross-industry cooperation to diversify the economy and implement the “1+4” strategy, the University of Saint Joseph’s (USJ) Faculty of Business and Law organised an immersive cultural exploration study tour to the Macao Museum. The tour was supported by the Macao Museum and sponsored by the Bank of China Macau Branch.

The USJ delegation, led by Professors Florence Lei and Emil Marques, visited the museum on 19 January 2024 and included students from Guinea-Bissau, Angola, São Tomé and Principe, the Philippines and local students. The tour explored Macao’s “East meets West” heritage and its historical significance as a trading port and a city of cultural and knowledge exchange. The students also explored how this unique positioning as a “World Centre of Tourism and Leisure” can be further developed under the “1+4” strategy, specifically in the areas of healthcare, finance, technology, MICE, culture and sports.

As an integrated resort operator, as the “1” in the “1+4” formula, it therefore plays a vital role in the repositioning of the tourism industry as the most efficient path towards a more sustainable and diversified economy. As such, USJ has prepared more visits to integrated resorts in the pipeline in the coming months to ensure real life opportunities for its students to understand the development of entertainment and tourism attractions, the promotion of an active and diverse MICE industry, the creation of a destination that can attract tourists from other source markets and the digitisation of IR experiences.

Understanding the culture and history of our rich heritage is essential to understanding our path of development in the future. At USJ, we learn from the lessons of history and embrace the development of the future.
