MRI Public Forum | From Matteo Ricci to the Chinese Rites Controversy: A Historical and Theological Analysis

03

Jan

The Macau Ricci Institute is hosting the Public Forum “From Matteo Ricci to the Chinese Rites Controversy: A Historical and Theological Analysis” on January 3.

ABOUT THE TALK:

The Chinese Rites Controversy constitutes a watershed in the history of the Catholic mission in China. We shall first discuss how Father Matteo Ricci developed his understanding on the Chinese Rites long before the controversy erupted and analyze the evolution of his thought on the matter. Ricci decided for a generous interpretation on the nature of the Rites, and we shall analyze why and how his interpretation was finally rejected one hundred years after his death. We shall finally discuss the theological meaning of the Chinese Rites for today.
