ABOUT THE MACAO ORCHESTRA:
The Macao Orchestra (OM) is a professional ensemble under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S.A.R. Government. OM is now a distinguished orchestra of Asia, performing Chinese and Western classics throughout the times. It has also played a key role in the music and cultural life of Macao residents and overseas audiences.
In 1983, Father Áureo de Castro of the St. Pious X Academy of Music and a group of music lovers founded the Macao Chamber Orchestra. In 2001, the Macao Chamber Orchestra was extended into an orchestra with double winds; it was renamed the Macao Orchestra. Today, it has developed into a medium-sized orchestra of around 50 outstanding musicians from more than ten countries and regions. In 2008, Maestro Lu Jia commenced his tenure as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Orchestra, initiating the convention of “Concert Seasons” and in each season 90 different concerts and outreach programme would be held, presenting to the public, comprehensively and systematically, classics from both Western and Chinese.
The Orchestra collaborates regularly with numerous internationally renowned musicians, conductors and ensembles. In addition, OM has regularly been invited to perform in Mainland China and overseas, participating in the 2015 Austria Bruckner Festival as China’s representative and attending the music festival “La Folle Journee au Japon” in Japan 2016. In 2017 and 2019, the Orchestra also participated in the “Belt and Road” International Music Season in Shenzhen. In celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between China and Portugal and the 20th Anniversary of Macao’s Return to the Motherland, OM made a Portugal tour in 2019, and in December of the same year, the Orchestra performed in the gala performance which celebrated the 20th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland.

ABOUT THE TALK:
The “Belt & Road Initiative”, “BRI” is inseparably coupled with the “China Dream” and the “World Dream” of China inspired by a common future of shared prosperity of humankind on this one planet earth. BRI has benefited ASEAN as China’s biggest trading partner, and further showcased by Africa and Pakistan. The new relational paradigm on Integral ecology challenges the technocratic paradigm of the neoliberal capitalism ideology on which BRI operates. Yet BRI is poised to countervail the hegemony of the west/global North by ensuring that the “ecological debt” of the global South be shouldered by the global North. At the same BRI acts as counterculture to promote integral sustainable development based on ethical principles, and international multiculturalism in the world while fostering greater multicultural solidarity with nations of the global South.

To introduce the GEGCLEAR support program’s assessment design and assist teachers in employing assessment to adjust their teaching strategies, GEGCLEAR co-hosted the online teacher training program ‘Early Education Professional Development Advanced Course: Early Literacy Support’ (Unit 3: Adjustments in the Support Program, Class A) on 11th September, 2021. A total of 33 teachers from 3 project kindergartens, namely Escola Dom João Paulino, Colégio de Santa Rosa de Lima (Secção Chinesa), and Our Lady of Fatima Girls' School participated in the session. They learned how to enhance their teaching outcome by incorporating assessment, teaching and accommodation into a coherent instructional framework.
There are two sessions in Unit 3. In the first session titled ‘Support Program’s Assessment and Adjustments’, speakers elaborated on the assessment mechanisms and their purposes in the support program. For instance, assigning students into corresponding groups based on their screening test results, understanding students’ individual differences based on their assessment results pre- and post-support classes so as to evaluate the outcome of the support program, monitoring students’ learning progress through sessional assessments to adjust teaching progress.
The second session titled ‘Scaffolding in application: Accommodating differences’ explains how teachers can design teaching activities by applying scaffolding principles. To provide teachers with the opportunity to practice, this session also arranged an activity in which teachers utilized the provided teaching materials to demonstrate a mock teaching session which takes into account students’ assessment results and individual differences for teaching strategies adjustment. Recognizing the well-articulated design and teaching, speakers from the project team offered constructive feedback on how their teaching could be optimized, allowing teachers to further reflect on the needs of each student.
The ‘Early Education Professional Development Advanced Course: Early Literacy Support’ teacher training program is hosted by DSEDJ’s Division of Teacher and Research Staff Development and co-hosted by GEGCLEAR, a partnership project of the Domingos Lam Centre for Research in Education (DLCRE) at the University of Saint Joseph (SUJ). Unit 4 ‘Reviewing the Support Program’ is tentatively scheduled to be held in 2022, with details to be announced.

During the second session, Professor Barbosa shared the opportunities younger Catholic Universities should consider as part of their internationalisation strategy, including being part of the dynamics of the Associations of Higher Education Institutions such as the IFCU and ASEACCU.
Furthermore, Professor Barbosa also suggested the appeal for the University Rankings. "In the case of USJ, we consider THE Impact Ranking, as per the requirements of the model of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and its flexibility to academic life, which would be the ranking that could fit us, basically due to the development of several sustainable projects done by our university with a positive impact into our communities by promoting diversity, leadership, and social responsibility".
In his conclusion, Professor Barbosa said that "we need to be sure future 'blended activities' can be sustainable over time and not only experiments to prove we can do it."
The event concluded with a breakout meeting session on "Sustainability of Internationalisation in ASEACCU member institutions" facilitated by Mr Glen Chatelier, Chairperson of the Internationalisation Working Group of ASEACCU, with the participation of academic staff, managers and officers of the International Affairs Office of the ASEACCU member institutions.
The result of this breakout session will be published as the framework for the Internationalisation Strategy of ASEACCU for its members' reference.

About the Talk:
Our global society has seen a tremendous economic growth over the last decades; a growth that - one the one hand - managed to reduce the poverty levels at a global scale, while on the other hand led to the global issue of climate change. The linear economic model appears unsustainable in the long run. Hence, a new circular approach is proposed to adjust our priorities and re-orient present and future infrastructure investments. In this context, we look back to nature to find the solutions we need to increase the resiliency of our societies, to protect and restore the ecosystems, and to maintain the economic growth without further undermining the planet’s boundaries. Nature-based solutions aim at this ambitious goal, especially due to their inherent ability to tackle climate change and provide a series of ecosystems services and social benefits. This presentation discusses the use of nature-based solutions in the new circular growth model, focusing on nature-based strategies for climate change adaptation, their multiple benefits and the need for awareness on nature-based approaches in the near future.
About the Speaker:

The World Mental Health Day, observed annually on October 10, mobilises efforts to support well-being and mental health around the world, working towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, namely SDG 3 “To ensure healthy lives and promote well-being at all ages”.
This year’s theme, set out by the World Health Organisation, was “Mental health care for all: let's make it a reality”. So, with the aim of promoting the well-being of USJ students, staff, and the wider community, the Department of Psychology of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Education, hosted two free online interactive activities, open to the general public, on October 11, 2021, as part of the first edition of the "USJ Mental Health Day".
- “Basic Helping Skills” by the USJ Counselling Centre’s Ms. Helen Lao, supported by the Office for Student and Alumni Affairs, discussed basic skills and strategies on how we can help ourselves, so we can help others.
- “Resilience and Environmental Psychology” by Prof. Jennifer Bovard, Visiting Academic, introduced the concept of resilience in relation to the field of environmental or eco-psychology, before exploring the relationship between individuals and the natural world, whilst demonstrating a live small experiment with the aid of a virtual reality headset.
The event counted with the participation of over 60 USJ students, staff, strategic partners, and members of the general public; thank you to the speakers and all those who attended!
The University of Saint Joseph looks forward to continuing to join global forces in the promotion of mental health awareness in the next “USJ Mental Health Day” in October 2022.

Given the preventive measures on pandemic control and suggestion to minimize crowd gathering by the Education and Youth Bureau (DSEDJ), the 2021/22 USJ Orientation Programme was re-designed to embrace an online format with a New Student Guide webpage with all relevant information for new students including Campus Life and Facilities, Library Services, USJ online systems and IT support; along with a warm welcome message by the Rector, Prof. Stephen Morgan, to mark the start of the new academic year for new and returning students.
Smaller face-to-face group induction sessions were also carried out on 8 Sep 2021, where members from the various faculties led Faculty Sessions with freshmen from all Bachelor programmes., giving freshmen the opportunity to meet and get to know their professors and colleagues, and understand the requirements of their academic studies.
On 15 September, during the Induction Week, the Office for Student and Alumni Affairs (OSAA) and the Counselling Centre jointly organised and delivered a comprehensive workshop on Time Management and Stress Management, aimed to facilitate the transition of freshmen to their new university life.
A total of 15 brief induction sessions were held for Master and PGDE students from 6 to 23 September 2021, while the new Doctoral students were given an introductory session on 24 Sep 2021.

About the Talk:
Macau’s military aid to the Ming during China's Ming-Qing dynastic conflicts is a recurrent issue in Western literature on the China Jesuit mission, although rather excessively supported by discontinuous Jesuit and Chinese accounts. This results in some confusion between different episodes presented both in primary and secondary sources, not to mention the numerical discrepancies usually related to the main purposes behind the production of narrative texts, its origins (e.g. official, religious, private), the public they addressed, and its geographical distribution.
Based on our research concerning a pioneer article published in 1938 by Charles R. Boxer, we will provide an insight into Macau and the Jesuits involvement in such conflicts, yet still advocating the need for a monographic study on the subject, paying closer attention to non-Jesuit sources.
We will show how the well-known Portuguese military potential was used as a stepping-stone argument, and an efficient means, by Macau's and Jesuit's diplomacy in defence of their commercial and political interests in China, vis a vis those of the Jesuit China Mission. We will also analyse the role developed by some Jesuits as principal mediators in all this process.
About the Speaker:
Tereza Sena is presently Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at the Xavier Research Centre for Memory and Identity (XRCMI), Faculty of Humanities, University of Saint Joseph, developing research related to the Jesuit China Mission in the late seventeenth century. Since 1988 she has devoted herself to the study of the historiography and history, culture and literature of Macau, including themes such as political autonomy; history of translation, the city´s intermediary role in the international trade of South China; foreigners at Macau; Macau’s Cemeteries; Macau-Siam relations; missionary activity in China, and Siam and continental Southeast Asia. Her academic activities have a strong international dimension, having involved several research projects, lecturing and publishing extensively (over 60 titles), in Macau, China, Portugal, USA, Germany, Italy, Thailand, Hong-Kong, Japan, Poland and Hungary. For her research, she has won three awards: in Portugal (1994, 1st prize) and Macau/PRC (2015 and 2018, Merit Prize, for a Monograph study).

This week, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) signed agreements to officially establish two academic library alliances initiated by the University of Macau for the development of academic cooperation between mainland China, Macao, and Portuguese speaking countries. As a founding member of these two alliances, the University of Saint Joseph continues its tradition of intercultural education and further expands its international reach.
The Academic Library Alliance for Portuguese Language Resources between the Macao Special Administrative Region and the Chinese Mainland (ABAMACHINA) aims to develop the cooperation between academic libraries of Macao and mainland China, and promote the sharing of resources in the Portuguese language. This alliance consists, for now, of 21 members from Macau and mainland China.
The Academic Library Alliance between Macao Special Administrative Region (China) and the Portuguese Speaking Countries (ABAMAPLP) aims to strengthen the cooperation between local academic libraries and university libraries from the Portuguese speaking countries. This alliance consists, for now, of 20 members from Macao, Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Cape-Verde, and Timor-Leste.
Those interested in knowing more about these alliances can find all relevant information, including the federated search engines of the ABAMACHINA libraries at https://library.um.edu.mo/aba.

The Faculty of Religious Studies and Philosophy (FRSP) held its annual Convocation on the 14th of September 2021 in the Don Bosco Auditorium, USJ Ilha Verde Campus.
A Song and Prayer marked the opening ceremony of the Convocation, and the Dean of FRSP, Fr. Franz Gassner, welcomed students and staff both face-to-face and online. Head of the Office for Students and Alumni Affairs (OSAA), Ms Teresa Loong, introduced the new updates about Student Support Services. At the same time, Prof. Maria Rita Silva from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Education (FSSE) offered a keynote on "Transforming Our World: Sustainable Development in USJ".
Prof. Silva explained the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations (UN), the Times Higher Education (THE) Ranking based on the SDGs, and the tasks of USJ's Green Committee in view of animating SDG-related activities.
The Convocation was followed by a self-introduction of our 29 online students (of 62), currently away from Macau due to the new travel restrictions: 19 are in Hong Kong, 3 in the Philippines, 4 in Vietnam, and 3 in Italy. The USJ Opening Mass of the Academic Year on the Solemnity of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was held after the Convocation, celebrated by Bishop Stephen Lee Bung-sang in the Holy Cross Chapel on Campus.
After the celebration, all enjoyed a light lunch on the 18th Floor of the Residence Building, with a blessing by Bishop Stephen Lee to 10 FRSP Graduates of the Aspirant Sisters of the Dominican Sisters of the Rosary, who will travel to the Philippines to extend their formation and mission.

"I was delighted to receive the formal notification from the Ministry of Education of the Central People’s Government of the permission for the University of Saint Joseph (“USJ”) to recruit students on a trial basis for the current academic year and beyond to our post-graduate programmes in Architecture, Business Administration, Information Systems and Science. Key in this process has been the constant advocacy of our case by the Chief Executive of the Macao SAR, the Honorable Mr Ho Iat Seng, by the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, the Honorable Ms Ao Ieong U and the staff of the Education and Youth Development Bureau. To them in particular, I want to say thank you on behalf of the entire USJ community – staff, students, alumni and friends. The granting of this permission would not have been possible without the support and assistance of the Director and members of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macao and the encouragement of the Commissioner for Foreign Affairs and his office. For their efforts on our behalf, I am immensely very grateful.
I am very conscious of the responsibility that the Central People’s Government has placed in USJ through this permission, and want to give every assurance of our gratitude and sincerity. We will closely observe the detailed regulations concerning this permit and will spare no effort in seeking to repay the trust and confidence of the Ministry of Education, as we seek to demonstrate that we are a university in, of and for Macao, in of and for China.
Over the last few years, USJ has developed close working relationships with a number of higher educations and research institutions in Mainland China. Those institutions recognise the very special character of USJ as a unique platform within the Greater Bay Area for co-operation between Chinese and Portuguese-speaking countries and as an example of Macao as a base for the harmonious exchange between the culture of the East and the West. The permission we have now received holds out for us the very real opportunity of deepening those collaborations in concrete ways that had not thus far been possible."
