Giuseppe Castiglione, arrived in China in the midst of the Rites Controversy. His design work at the Old Summer Palace, ”Yuanminguan” reflects an empathic understanding of the Emperor’s desires and longings emulating the spiritual unity of the Lord Creator with artists and architects working as one. Castiglione and his Jesuit brethren gathered inspiration from the creative design of gardens and palaces from their imaginative memory and the similar lived experience of the most powerful figures in Europe. Parallels are drawn between Maria de Medici’s longing for her home in Florence articulated in the design of Luxembourg garden and the emperor’s desire to quell the longing of his Fragrant Concubine, Xiang Fei for her home in Kashgar shown in the Islamic influences found the Belvedere palace at Yuanmingyuan. Marian imagery in the depiction of the emperors concubine waiting for their Lord is also examined. The spiritual lesson: in times of crisis, speak less, listen more and engage your senses.

string(3633) "ABOUT THE TALK:
Church Fathers have modelled for us Christian life in their holiness, shaped the teachings of the Church in their writings, and coined the doctrines in their relentless defence of the faith. We can never over-estimate the importance of Church Fathers to the Church. Now Covid-19 has brought new challenges to the world. At the time of crisis, we find Church Fathers again a source of inspiration. Having faced natural threats, social conflicts, political turmoils, and ecclesiastical chaos, Christians in the Early Church knew very well the normality of vicissitudes in life. Yet Church Fathers did not succumb to afflictions in their lives, but took them as a channel to deepen their spiritual relationship with God.
Gregory of Nyssa, one of the Cappadocian Fathers living in the 4th century, is especially so. Gregory may not be well-known traditionally, but is undoubtedly one of the most discussed Church Fathers in theology since the 20th century. He has inspired theologians to ground theology on God’s unknowability, the great mystery, and the power of faith. Though saying nothing about pandemics, how he stood on God’s utter unknowability to formulate man’s mystical relationship with God can offer us insightful spiritual reflections on the present crisis.
The upcoming lecture will lead you into Gregory’s offering of the spiritual life and read the pandemic crisis in that mystical light.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Sonja Xia, Assistant professor of the Faculty of Religious Studies and Philosophy, USJ.
Sonja Hui Xia works as an assistant professor in the Faculty of Religious Studies and Philosophy at the University of St. Joseph, Macau. She has obtained her Ph.D. in theology from K.U.Leuven, Belgium on the light imagery in Gregory of Nyssa’s Spiritual Theology. Her present research focuses on the formation of doctrines in the early Church and cross-cultural exchange and Christianity.

About the Talk:
A Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) is a new form of central bank money accessible to the public, accepted as a means of payment, legal tender, safe store of value by all citizens, businesses, and government agencies. Undoubtedly, the pandemic has turbocharged a global financial technology revolution.
Central bank digital currencies have been referred to as “the future of payments”, or even “the future of money”, and not without reason.
Departing from my previous work on the early Americans in Macau, published in 2004, this lecture adds some preliminary results of ongoing comparative research regarding all foreigners living in Macau from the late eighteenth to mid-twentieth centuries, and aims to achieve a numeric global picture of such individuals and their representativeness in the city.
The Digital Yuan is a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), and CBDCs are not cryptocurrencies, even though there is of course some relation between both categories.
In April 2020, after several years of work (the research commenced in 2014), the Chinese Government announced the starting of the tests of the country’s central bank digital currency (CBDC), DCEP (Digital Currency Electronic Payment) or Digital Yuan, with the aim of deploying it massively in China by the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing.
Thus far, the tests in the Mainland have proven to be very successful.
Even though, according to a report published by the Bank of International Settlements (BIS) in early 2020, 80% of Central Banks in the world are currently working on CBDCs (some are just at an initial research stage, though), Asia seems to be the place where CBDCs arouse more interest. In this sense, the major economy leading the CBDC race in Asia (and in the whole world) is China.
In this seminar, I will analyze what opportunities the Digital Yuan will offer to Mainland China, but also to Macau and to the rest of the Greater Bay Area.

About the Talk:
Resulting from a continuous Western presence since the mid-sixteenth century, Macau is characterized by a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural diversity; a demographic mobility and a complete dependence from the outside world. This contributed to turning the port-city into a world-meeting place, which, in the long term, made it much more than just a satellite of Canton.
There are separate studies on foreigners in Macau, namely the British, the Americans, the Swedish, the Parsees and Muslims, which emphasize national approaches and reflect ethnic-centred perspectives, neglecting transnational trading partnerships and strategies, personal relations and group commitments. On the one hand, the experiences of the men and women involved are rarely questioned or analyzed from a Macau perspective and/or from the perspective of a group as a Western trading community living and interacting with the city, its authorities, its people, traditions and so on. On the other hand, there is no quantification of these foreigners regarding numerical representation; national, gender and professional distributions; duration of stays/number of visits; mortality, birth rates and life expectancy, among other aspects.

The Forum of Psychology* is an annual event organised by the Department of Psychology (DPY) of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Education (FSSE). This year, it will take place on Saturday, November 27, at the Don Bosco Auditorium of the University of Saint Joseph's Ilha Verde Campus, at 6:30PM.
The main purpose of the event is to empower and inspire Psychology students, facilitating a space where the second year of the Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy (MCP) and the Master of Organisational Psychology (MOP) can present and share their research projects. Students will have the opportunity to practice communication skills that will come in handy for their oral defences, while inspiring Bachelor of Psychology students, potential Master students, and increasing awareness of what it takes to conduct a Master-level research project.
The event will kick-off with the presentation of the best DPY Master dissertations of the 2020/2021 Academic Year, followed by PhD student Ms. Jacqueline Leong, who will present her ongoing research on “Gambling Environment And The Risk For Gambling Addiction: A Bioecological Perspective On The Role Of Adolescents’ Beliefs And Value System”. After a Q&A session, a networking opportunity will be facilitated with refreshments, whilst participants are free to learn more about the research projects of the year 2 MCP and MOP students through the scientific posters on display.
The Forum of Psychology is mainly organised for the DPY community (students, alumni, professors, and strategic partners) but it is also open to the remaining FSSE members, the University of Saint Joseph and the general public that are interested in the field of Psychology.
We hope you can join us!
*The event began in 2016 as the Forum of Counselling and Psychotherapy (FCP), solely with students of the MCP. With the creation of the MOP in 2018, the event was expanded to include MOP students in 2020, having been rebranded this year as Forum of Psychology.

The opening ceremony of the "Celebration of the 22nd Anniversary of the Establishment of Macao SAR: Calligraphy Exhibition for Chinese Storytelling on Devotion to Native Land", part of the USJ 25th Anniversary Series, took place on November 11, 2021, at the Kent Wong Exhibition Gallery in the University of Saint Joseph (USJ).
The event, co-organised by the Macao Wisdom Humanities Encourage Political Association, the Greater Bay Area Pottery Collection Exchange Association and USJ, has profound meaning to bring patriotic education into higher education through the Calligraphy Exhibition.
During the opening ceremony, Prof. Zhang Shuguang, Vice Rector of USJ, mentioned that “USJ as an important academic platform for the integration of Chinese and Western cultures, USJ serves the mission of "building a base for exchange and cooperation with Chinese culture as the mainstream and the coexistence of multiple cultures" given by our country to Macao. We hope that more students at the University of Saint Joseph, the future pillars of our society, will learn more about the events of the return 22 years ago and the stories of China and Macao through the calligraphy and the exhibition. We hope the exhibition will help students can be further "rooted in Macao, based in Macao, serving Macao, China" under the mission of the University's education objectives and development goals, and strive with the University to keep up with the times while upholding and maintaining its traditional philosophy.”
On the opening speech, Mr. Ung Choi Kun, President of Macao Wisdom Humanities Encourage Political Association, pointed that cultural diversity is a fundamental feature of the world's cultural ecology, and mutual respect and understanding for different cultures are required for the common prosperity of the world's cultures."Looking back in history, Chinese civilisation has a long history, and Chinese culture is extensive and profound. The virtues of "loyalty, filial piety, courtesy, righteousness, benevolence, wisdom and faithfulness" extolled by our ancient sages, are the foundation on which the Chinese nation stands firmly in the world culture. Likewise, there is a venerable father in the Catholic Church, Saint Joseph, whose courage to be faithful, loving and innovative are values that are universally recognised. Therefore, the "Chinese Storytelling" event has a common value base when it comes to the University of Saint Joseph."
The opening ceremony concluded with Mr. Ung Choi Kun presenting a special gift for USJ - a calligraphy featuring a poem based on USJ’s 25th Anniversary motto - Tradition, Innovation and Vision.
The guests attending the opening ceremony were: Mr. Wan Sucheng, Director General of Publicity and Culture Department, The Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR; Mr. Carlos Roberto Xavier, Director of Department of Tertiary Education of Education and Youth Development Bureau; Mr. Leonel Alberto Alves, Member of the Executive Council of Macau; Ms. Leong Nga Tou, Head of the Special Projects Department of the Macao Foundation; Mr. Lao Ngai Leong, Representative of the National People's Congress in the Macao Special Administrative Region; Mr. Chan Meng Kam, Member of the National Committee of the CPPCC in the Macao Special Administrative Region; Mr. Wang Gang, Director of Macao Office of Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits; Mr. Cheang Hon Kong, President of The Chinese Educators Association of Macau; Mr. Wang Haitao, Chairman of National Conditions Education Association (Macau); Mr. Ao Io Nam, President of the Macau Institute of Calligraphy; Mr. Lei U Seng, President of Greater Bay Area Ceramic Art Collection Exchange Association; Prof. Álvaro Barbosa, Vice Rector of of University of Saint Joseph; Prof. Keith Morrison, Vice Rector the University of Saint Joseph; Dr. Alejandro Salcedo Garcia, Administrator of University of Saint Joseph.
To support the Macau Special Olympics (MSO) and to embrace social inclusion, staff and students of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) participated in the CESL Asia and Friends Sports Fun Day 2021, on 6 November, 2021,
For every team that played the bocce game, CESL Asia would donate MOP 2,000 to the MSO. The USJ team, including Sadik (Bachelor of Social Work), Pang Wing Yan (Bachelor of Education) and Ms. Jenny Lam from the Office for Students and Alumni Affairs (OSAA), played bocce with the MSO members and entered the semi-finals.
This year USJ donated MOP 10,000 to the Macau Special Olympics to support the event. Dr. Alejandro Salcedo Garcia, Administrator of USJ, attended the Charity Cheque Presentation Ceremony on the day on behalf of USJ.
A population-based study from the University of Hong Kong found out that 19% of 500 respondents reported depressive symptoms (Choi, 2020) during the pandemic of COVID-19. Lun et al,.(2018) reported up to 68.5% of university students of 1200 respondents exhibited some degree of depressive symptoms.
This talk aims to introduce the symptoms and patterns of depression, understand the contributing factors, identify what one could do in the prevention, and offer support for someone who might suffer from depression.

string(3929) "ABOUT THE TALK:
Mangroves are recognised for several ecological and socio-economic services (ES) it provides. They are an important nature-based solution (NbS) needed to address various socio-environmental challenges. Mangroves are an integral component in the climate change adaptation and mitigation (CCAM) program. However, the effectiveness of mangroves in CCAM depends on its extent and state of ecosystem health. When “healthy” (as opposed to “degraded” or “disturbed”), mangroves are expected to provide substantial ES. The recent State of the World Mangroves report acknowledges that the losses of mangroves were slowed. In most Asian countries however, there are still reports on mangrove degradation and losses caused by natural and anthropogenic disturbances. These reports have wide local/national and regional variations. If effectively managed, the degraded mangroves can be restored to recover its ES and contribute in CCAM program. This study aims to provide a review of potential contributions (as well as limitations) of mangroves in CCAM program and in line with the campaign for United Nations' Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

string(6711) "About the Talk:
There were a lot of people involved in opium smuggling in China in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but the British usually get most of the blame. Armenians, Parsees, and Muslims who were based in India, and had agents in Canton and Macao, were much involved in the opium trade. By the 1770s, every Portuguese ship in Macao was carrying opium to China. In the 1780s, Americans began arriving and they also became much involved in smuggling. In the 1790s, the Spaniards in Manila joined in the opium smuggling in Macao and the delta. Of course there were many Chinese who purchased and distributed the drug all along the China coast. After Singapore was established in 1819, and Chinese settled in that port, Chinese junks were dispatched from there to China with opium. In 1820, Lintin Island became a smuggling hub where many foreign ships and Chinese junks anchored and engaged in smuggling. In the 1820s, foreign ships and Chinese junks were distributing the drug all along the China coast. Thus, there was no one person to blame for all of this, but rather multiple participants. As I have pointed out in other publications, the Qing government should also be held responsible for allowing all of this to happen. Owing to a lack of monitoring and information in Beijing about the extent of the smuggling in South China, no effective measures were initiated to stop the illicit trade, until it was too late.

E-learning in some form or another has been around for decades, but recently moved to the forefront of education during the pandemic. Both research and anecdotal evidence suggest a wide range of opinions and implementations of e-learning. This PhD research aims to add to the existing knowledge and literature on e-learning in Macau and beyond, in order to find where expected outcomes of e-learning among selected stakeholders (teachers, parents, students and institutions) intersect, and to perform an analysis of how these expectations compare to actual implementation and outcomes of e-learning.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Michael Dudoff has been working in education since 2001, mostly in Asia and the Middle East, and has been involved in most aspects of language teaching (English/German), including teacher training, educational technology and testing. He has experienced e-learning as an educator and end-user, but also from its more technical side, having worked as an e-learning manager in a teacher training project in the UAE and as test administrator for online proficiency tests such as Cambridge Business English.
