About the Talk:
A population-based study from the University of Hong Kong found out that 19% of 500 respondents reported depressive symptoms (Choi, 2020) during the pandemic of COVID-19. Lun et al,.(2018) reported up to 68.5% of university students of 1200 respondents exhibited some degree of depressive symptoms.
This talk aims to introduce the symptoms and patterns of depression, understand the contributing factors, identify what one could do in the prevention, and offer support for someone who might suffer from depression.
About the USJ Counselling Centre:
The USJ Counselling Centre strives to provide educational-preventive programmes which aim to address the developmental needs and maximise the potentials of our students.
These programmes are designed to help students acquire new knowledge, skills and behaviours, realistic self-appraisal, foster responsible personal choices, enhance the ability to make meaningful and supportive relationships with others, thus increase the capacity to engage in a satisfying and healthy style of living.

ABOUT THE TALK:
Mangroves are recognised for several ecological and socio-economic services (ES) it provides. They are an important nature-based solution (NbS) needed to address various socio-environmental challenges. Mangroves are an integral component in the climate change adaptation and mitigation (CCAM) program. However, the effectiveness of mangroves in CCAM depends on its extent and state of ecosystem health. When “healthy” (as opposed to “degraded” or “disturbed”), mangroves are expected to provide substantial ES. The recent State of the World Mangroves report acknowledges that the losses of mangroves were slowed. In most Asian countries however, there are still reports on mangrove degradation and losses caused by natural and anthropogenic disturbances. These reports have wide local/national and regional variations. If effectively managed, the degraded mangroves can be restored to recover its ES and contribute in CCAM program. This study aims to provide a review of potential contributions (as well as limitations) of mangroves in CCAM program and in line with the campaign for United Nations' Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Dr. Severino Salmo III is a restoration ecologist and presently an Associate Professor at the Institute of Biology, University of the Philippines. He has a PhD degree in Biological Science from the University of Queensland, Australia and post-doctoral stint at the University of the Ryukyus – Tropical Biosphere Research Center, Okinawa, Japan. His research is mainly focused on the biology, ecology, conservation, biodiversity, sediment dynamics, carbon stock and sequestration rate, environmental change (mainly sea level rise), community participation, Marine Protected Area, environmental planning, and management of mangroves forests. He has extensive publications in this research area and is currently associate editor of the journal Frontiers in Marine Science (Global Change and the Future Ocean). He is active in the academy as well as community engagement https://mangroveecology.com/.

About the Talk:
There were a lot of people involved in opium smuggling in China in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but the British usually get most of the blame. Armenians, Parsees, and Muslims who were based in India, and had agents in Canton and Macao, were much involved in the opium trade. By the 1770s, every Portuguese ship in Macao was carrying opium to China. In the 1780s, Americans began arriving and they also became much involved in smuggling. In the 1790s, the Spaniards in Manila joined in the opium smuggling in Macao and the delta. Of course there were many Chinese who purchased and distributed the drug all along the China coast. After Singapore was established in 1819, and Chinese settled in that port, Chinese junks were dispatched from there to China with opium. In 1820, Lintin Island became a smuggling hub where many foreign ships and Chinese junks anchored and engaged in smuggling. In the 1820s, foreign ships and Chinese junks were distributing the drug all along the China coast. Thus, there was no one person to blame for all of this, but rather multiple participants. As I have pointed out in other publications, the Qing government should also be held responsible for allowing all of this to happen. Owing to a lack of monitoring and information in Beijing about the extent of the smuggling in South China, no effective measures were initiated to stop the illicit trade, until it was too late.
About the Speaker:

He is the author of numerous books and articles on Guangzhou and Macao, including The Canton Trade (2005), Merchants of Canton and Macao, vols. 1 & 2 (2011 & 2016), and Whampoa and the Canton Trade (2020).

ABOUT THE TALK:
E-learning in some form or another has been around for decades, but recently moved to the forefront of education during the pandemic. Both research and anecdotal evidence suggest a wide range of opinions and implementations of e-learning. This PhD research aims to add to the existing knowledge and literature on e-learning in Macau and beyond, in order to find where expected outcomes of e-learning among selected stakeholders (teachers, parents, students and institutions) intersect, and to perform an analysis of how these expectations compare to actual implementation and outcomes of e-learning.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Michael Dudoff has been working in education since 2001, mostly in Asia and the Middle East, and has been involved in most aspects of language teaching (English/German), including teacher training, educational technology and testing. He has experienced e-learning as an educator and end-user, but also from its more technical side, having worked as an e-learning manager in a teacher training project in the UAE and as test administrator for online proficiency tests such as Cambridge Business English.

ABOUT THE MACAO ORCHESTRA:
The Macao Orchestra (OM) is a professional ensemble under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S.A.R. Government. OM is now a distinguished orchestra of Asia, performing Chinese and Western classics throughout the times. It has also played a key role in the music and cultural life of Macao residents and overseas audiences.
In 1983, Father Áureo de Castro of the St. Pious X Academy of Music and a group of music lovers founded the Macao Chamber Orchestra. In 2001, the Macao Chamber Orchestra was extended into an orchestra with double winds; it was renamed the Macao Orchestra. Today, it has developed into a medium-sized orchestra of around 50 outstanding musicians from more than ten countries and regions. In 2008, Maestro Lu Jia commenced his tenure as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Orchestra, initiating the convention of “Concert Seasons” and in each season 90 different concerts and outreach programme would be held, presenting to the public, comprehensively and systematically, classics from both Western and Chinese.
The Orchestra collaborates regularly with numerous internationally renowned musicians, conductors and ensembles. In addition, OM has regularly been invited to perform in Mainland China and overseas, participating in the 2015 Austria Bruckner Festival as China’s representative and attending the music festival “La Folle Journee au Japon” in Japan 2016. In 2017 and 2019, the Orchestra also participated in the “Belt and Road” International Music Season in Shenzhen. In celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between China and Portugal and the 20th Anniversary of Macao’s Return to the Motherland, OM made a Portugal tour in 2019, and in December of the same year, the Orchestra performed in the gala performance which celebrated the 20th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland.

ABOUT THE TALK:
The “Belt & Road Initiative”, “BRI” is inseparably coupled with the “China Dream” and the “World Dream” of China inspired by a common future of shared prosperity of humankind on this one planet earth. BRI has benefited ASEAN as China’s biggest trading partner, and further showcased by Africa and Pakistan. The new relational paradigm on Integral ecology challenges the technocratic paradigm of the neoliberal capitalism ideology on which BRI operates. Yet BRI is poised to countervail the hegemony of the west/global North by ensuring that the “ecological debt” of the global South be shouldered by the global North. At the same BRI acts as counterculture to promote integral sustainable development based on ethical principles, and international multiculturalism in the world while fostering greater multicultural solidarity with nations of the global South.

To introduce the GEGCLEAR support program’s assessment design and assist teachers in employing assessment to adjust their teaching strategies, GEGCLEAR co-hosted the online teacher training program ‘Early Education Professional Development Advanced Course: Early Literacy Support’ (Unit 3: Adjustments in the Support Program, Class A) on 11th September, 2021. A total of 33 teachers from 3 project kindergartens, namely Escola Dom João Paulino, Colégio de Santa Rosa de Lima (Secção Chinesa), and Our Lady of Fatima Girls' School participated in the session. They learned how to enhance their teaching outcome by incorporating assessment, teaching and accommodation into a coherent instructional framework.
There are two sessions in Unit 3. In the first session titled ‘Support Program’s Assessment and Adjustments’, speakers elaborated on the assessment mechanisms and their purposes in the support program. For instance, assigning students into corresponding groups based on their screening test results, understanding students’ individual differences based on their assessment results pre- and post-support classes so as to evaluate the outcome of the support program, monitoring students’ learning progress through sessional assessments to adjust teaching progress.
The second session titled ‘Scaffolding in application: Accommodating differences’ explains how teachers can design teaching activities by applying scaffolding principles. To provide teachers with the opportunity to practice, this session also arranged an activity in which teachers utilized the provided teaching materials to demonstrate a mock teaching session which takes into account students’ assessment results and individual differences for teaching strategies adjustment. Recognizing the well-articulated design and teaching, speakers from the project team offered constructive feedback on how their teaching could be optimized, allowing teachers to further reflect on the needs of each student.
The ‘Early Education Professional Development Advanced Course: Early Literacy Support’ teacher training program is hosted by DSEDJ’s Division of Teacher and Research Staff Development and co-hosted by GEGCLEAR, a partnership project of the Domingos Lam Centre for Research in Education (DLCRE) at the University of Saint Joseph (SUJ). Unit 4 ‘Reviewing the Support Program’ is tentatively scheduled to be held in 2022, with details to be announced.

The event was hosted online by the University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Philippines.
The event was dedicated to exploring how Catholic Higher Education Institutions (CHEIs) should face the impact brought by the pandemic and the urgent call for ASEACCU member institutions to share their best practices on "Teaching and Learning, Wellness and Financial Sustainability" and "Research and Internationalisation Strategies."
In the first plenary, the Keynote Speaker, President of the International Federation of Catholic Universities (IFCU), Professor Isabel Gil, in her address on "Challenges and Opportunities to Catholic Higher Educational Institutions in the Time of the Pandemic", recognised the efforts of CHEIs to rise above challenges and shared her insights on what the future holds for the university landscapes beyond the pandemic.
The first plenary session covered the "Best Practices among ASEACCU Member-Institutions" and talks on "Teaching and Learning, Wellness and Financial Sustainability and Research", open to everyone. A breakout meeting opened to researchers and scholars to discuss the challenges and affordable opportunities for "Research Collaboration between/among ASEACCU members Institutions".
The second plenary session covered the Internationalisation Strategy among the ASEACCU Member-Institutions in the New Reality, and talks on the "Internationalisation in the New Reality" by the representative of the University of Santo Tomas de Manila, Developing a Framework to Support Internationalisation for Catholic University", by the representative of the Australian Catholic University and the "Sustainable Internationalisation in Young Developing Institutions by USJ Vice-Rector, Professor Barbosa.
During the second session, Professor Barbosa shared the opportunities younger Catholic Universities should consider as part of their internationalisation strategy, including being part of the dynamics of the Associations of Higher Education Institutions such as the IFCU and ASEACCU.
Furthermore, Professor Barbosa also suggested the appeal for the University Rankings. "In the case of USJ, we consider THE Impact Ranking, as per the requirements of the model of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and its flexibility to academic life, which would be the ranking that could fit us, basically due to the development of several sustainable projects done by our university with a positive impact into our communities by promoting diversity, leadership, and social responsibility".
In his conclusion, Professor Barbosa said that "we need to be sure future 'blended activities' can be sustainable over time and not only experiments to prove we can do it."
The event concluded with a breakout meeting session on "Sustainability of Internationalisation in ASEACCU member institutions" facilitated by Mr Glen Chatelier, Chairperson of the Internationalisation Working Group of ASEACCU, with the participation of academic staff, managers and officers of the International Affairs Office of the ASEACCU member institutions.
The result of this breakout session will be published as the framework for the Internationalisation Strategy of ASEACCU for its members' reference.

About the Talk:
Our global society has seen a tremendous economic growth over the last decades; a growth that - one the one hand - managed to reduce the poverty levels at a global scale, while on the other hand led to the global issue of climate change. The linear economic model appears unsustainable in the long run. Hence, a new circular approach is proposed to adjust our priorities and re-orient present and future infrastructure investments. In this context, we look back to nature to find the solutions we need to increase the resiliency of our societies, to protect and restore the ecosystems, and to maintain the economic growth without further undermining the planet’s boundaries. Nature-based solutions aim at this ambitious goal, especially due to their inherent ability to tackle climate change and provide a series of ecosystems services and social benefits. This presentation discusses the use of nature-based solutions in the new circular growth model, focusing on nature-based strategies for climate change adaptation, their multiple benefits and the need for awareness on nature-based approaches in the near future.

The World Mental Health Day, observed annually on October 10, mobilises efforts to support well-being and mental health around the world, working towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, namely SDG 3 “To ensure healthy lives and promote well-being at all ages”.
This year’s theme, set out by the World Health Organisation, was “Mental health care for all: let's make it a reality”. So, with the aim of promoting the well-being of USJ students, staff, and the wider community, the Department of Psychology of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Education, hosted two free online interactive activities, open to the general public, on October 11, 2021, as part of the first edition of the "USJ Mental Health Day".
- “Basic Helping Skills” by the USJ Counselling Centre’s Ms. Helen Lao, supported by the Office for Student and Alumni Affairs, discussed basic skills and strategies on how we can help ourselves, so we can help others.
- “Resilience and Environmental Psychology” by Prof. Jennifer Bovard, Visiting Academic, introduced the concept of resilience in relation to the field of environmental or eco-psychology, before exploring the relationship between individuals and the natural world, whilst demonstrating a live small experiment with the aid of a virtual reality headset.
The event counted with the participation of over 60 USJ students, staff, strategic partners, and members of the general public; thank you to the speakers and all those who attended!
The University of Saint Joseph looks forward to continuing to join global forces in the promotion of mental health awareness in the next “USJ Mental Health Day” in October 2022.
