Biology is increasingly seen as the key field of science of the 21st century. The latest advances in molecular biology and bioinformatics are allowing major breakthroughs and developments, namely in biotechnology, which were unthinkable until recently. The increased cross-disciplinarity of the field ensures that it permeates across widely different areas and has an increasingly large impact on all areas of human activity. Biology and Biotechnology are also linked with the current challenges and finding new solutions to address these major issues: How to feed, fuel, and heal the world!

The Bachelor of Biology and Biotechnology programme aims to provide students with a solid background and understanding of the processes and functions of biological systems and how these can be developed into technologies and solutions to improve our lives.

The Bachelor of Biology and Biotechnology programme is rich in specialisation modules, emphasising cross-disciplinary subjects (Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Sciences) in the first and second years to provide students with a strong scientific foundation. In the third and fourth years, greater emphasis is placed on modules related to biology and biotechnology (Microbiology, Developmental Biology, Environmental and Food Biotechnology, Medical Biotechnology). The fourth year includes two Final Project modules that allow students to focus on specific topics of interest and a science and communication seminar to expose students to other topics and develop oral and written science communication skills.

The programme coordinator is André Antunes.

Student Experience

  • Students obtain a solid training in Biology and Biotechnology concepts and methods.
  • Students are oriented towards practical problem-solving, with extensive laboratory-based work, field-work opportunities, and interactions with research projects.
  • The proposed teaching methodologies are based on active learning, experimental practice, the development of critical thinking, collaborative learning methods, and the development of final projects in the last year of study.
  • Students are trained by experienced international researchers and industry leaders.
