Bachelor Programme

School of Education

Duration Language Campus
4 Years Full-Time (Day)  English  Ilha Verde Campus

This programme prepares you to become a professional kindergarten, primary, or secondary school teacher.

The Bachelor of Education (BEd) provides students with practical and professional knowledge, as well as dispositions essential for teaching. The BEd offers hands-on experiences, theoretical learning, and the skills needed to become an effective teacher. The programme combines academic study where students will explore principles of teaching and learning, curriculum planning, assessment, inclusive practices, subject content knowledge, and a teaching practice placement.

Five specialisations are offered in Kindergarten, Primary, Secondary English, Secondary Portuguese, and Secondary Religious Education. English or Portuguese language proficiency equivalent to B1 level (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is required for the secondary education specialisations. Specialist modules are introduced in the third year of study and year four is centred on school experience to help develop practical skills in live classroom settings.

The programme coordinator is Susannah Sun.

Career Opportunities

A Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree is a versatile qualification that opens doors to a wide array of rewarding careers, both within and beyond the traditional classroom. The skills acquired—including curriculum design, instructional strategies, learner assessment, and classroom management—are highly valued across multiple sectors. The career paths can be broadly categorized as follows:

  1. Formal Educational Settings

This is the most direct career path for B.Ed. graduates, focusing on structured learning environments.

  • School Teachers: This is the primary role, preparing graduates to teach at various levels (early childhood, primary, or secondary) in public, private, or international schools. They are responsible for instructing students, developing lesson plans, and fostering a positive learning environment.
  • School Administrators: For those with experience and further education, a B.Ed. provides a foundation for leadership roles such as:
    • Curriculum Developer/Coordinator: Designing, implementing, and evaluating school-wide curricula and educational programs.
  • Language Instructors: The global demand for language skills creates specific opportunities for graduates specializing in languages. A B.Ed. graduate can work as a dedicated instructor for:
    • English as a Second Language (ESL): These roles are found in language centers, international schools, and public schools worldwide.
  1. Non-School-Based Educational Settings

This growing sector applies educational principles to diverse environments outside the traditional school system.

  • Corporate Trainers and Talent Development Consultants: Businesses invest heavily in their employees’ growth. B.Ed. graduates are ideal for these roles, as they can:
    • Design and deliver training programs on soft skills, software, and leadership.
    • Apply principles of adult learning to create effective professional development courses.
    • Manage talent development initiatives to enhance organizational performance.
  • Education Center Staff: This includes roles in organizations that provide supplemental educational services, such as:
    • Tutoring Centers: Providing specialized academic support.
    • Test Preparation Companies: Helping students prepare for standardized exams.
    • Specialized Learning Centers: Focusing on areas like STEM, literacy, or arts education.
  1. Further Development and Advanced Roles

A Bachelor of Education also serves as a strong foundation for pursuing advanced degrees (Master’s or Doctorate) and entering more specialized, high-impact fields.

  • Education Consultants: These experts work independently or for consulting firms to advise schools, corporations, or government bodies on issues like curriculum reform, teaching methodologies, educational technology integration, and organizational improvement.
  • Education Researchers: Working in universities, think tanks, or research institutions, they conduct studies to improve teaching and learning processes, assess educational programs, and contribute to the academic body of knowledge in the field of education.

In summary, a Bachelor of Education is far more than a teaching degree. It is a passport to a dynamic career dedicated to facilitating learning and development across a multitude of settings—from schools and corporate boardrooms to the digital realm of EdTech and the halls of government policy. The skills of an educator—communication, empathy, organization, and a deep understanding of how people learn—are universally applicable and in constant demand.

Typical Applicants

  • Have strong communication skills
