About the Talk
Design Society has opened its doors in Shenzhen, only one hour from Macau. You can visit its galleries, shops and theatre. You can enjoy the roof garden, and experience design. But whatever the individual visitor’s destination, the promise of Design Society is to provide a platform for many to explore scenarios for design in China. More than a lecture, this can be a brainstorming session for future input from Macau.

About the Talk
Over the last decade proliferation of music making tools that are available to the widest demographics has been significantly changing the landscape of the recording industry. Every smart phone or tablet comes with numerous free applications that allow virtually anyone with no musical training to create quite interesting music. In order to make these applications commercially viable, software manufacturers had to design their tools by primarily manipulating the rhythmic structure of the music rather than the melodic structure. This shift from melody to rhythm has become evident in many popular musical styles. Now, quite understandably, it has gotten to the Hollywood film music as well. A musical theme in many Hollywood films is no longer a melody composed of notes. Instead, it is a feeling, a groove, a rhythm, which is related to the fact of wanting to appeal to a “younger” demographic. This audience would probably rather enjoy a groove than be “bothered” by a pesky melody. For that reason, the film audiences consider melodies to be old fashioned and dated, stale and a product of a bygone age. There is a perception that if a film score contains any memorable leit motive melody it will detract from the drama and come off as sounding like something from the old days. Perhaps the lack of strong melody in modern film scoring leaves us with an easy musical tool to exploit. It’s great to be puttering along in a cue that perhaps is a simple beat based groovy ostinato, and suddenly intensify the drama and surprise the audience with a melodic idea. I will show by concrete examples of presenting several film clips, how this change took place over the years, and how this new trend in film scoring has been established.

The Institute of Science and Environment at USJ organised field visits to two ecological sites in Cotai and Coloane for the students of the Ecology and Ecosystems Conservation module (MES202) in November. The first visit was at the Ecological Zones in Cotai, an area of about 55 hectares, comprised of the Ecological Zone I (a 15-hectare bird sanctuary) and Ecological II (a 40-hectare mangrove forest). The activity provided the students a better perspective of the coastal wetland ecosystems in Macao and why they should be protected and conserved. The second visit was in an intertidal ecosystem in Coloane. The students were surprised to observe biodiversity, with seaweeds and other associated fauna in the area. It was a unique opportunity for them to closely observe an intertidal ecosystem, something that they have not noticed nor have given attention in Macao before.

About the Talk
This talk will discuss the environmental effects in southwest China under the national Western Development Strategy based on a case study in the Beipan River basin through data searching, interviews, and in-situ observation. The results of erosion, Karst stony-desertification, reforestation, and the water quality of the Beipan River revealed that the environment in the basin was improved during 2000-2012. However, geology, topography, hydrology, climate, and human impacts will remain major challenges to ecological conservation and environmental protection. Future development in the Basin and southwest China will demand a long term and holistic approach to overcome both natural and human impacts.
About the Speaker

ABOUT THE TALK
Communication and behaviour are tightly linked and fish use several sensory channels to communicate. Chemical communication is the most ancient form of communication but its role is often ignored because the substances involved are not known. Among the teleost fishes, cichlids are of special interest for the study evolution, for aquaculture and as invasive species in some parts of the world. In the Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus), reproduction and male aggression are mediated through urinary cues tactically released by dominant males. The olfactory potency of male chemical cues depends on the donors’ social rank. Females spawn preferentially with dominant males and increase sex steroid production in the presence of male chemical cues. Moreover, dominant males increase urination frequency to signal their dominance status to rivals and reduce male-male aggression. The identity and biological function of the most potent odorants released by dominant Mozambique tilapia males has been elucidated and are important tools to establish the associated neurobiological mechanisms and as potential tools for aquaculture and in population control.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Adelino V.M. Canario received is PhD from the University of East Anglia (Norwich, UK). He is professor of Cell Biology and Reproductive Physiology, Director of the Centre for Marine Sciences and leader of the Comparative Molecular and Integrative Biology group at the University of Algarve, and visiting professor (1000 Talents) at Shanghai Ocean University. The research interests centre on the role of hormones in reproduction (sex determination and puberty), social and reproductive behaviour, chemical communication and ion regulation in fishes, using both classical physiological techniques, and the more recent “omics” approaches. He is associate editor of Gene, General Comparative Endocrinology, Aquaculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries, Fishes, and Heliyon.

About the Talk
Mainly organised for the MCP community (MCP students, professors and alumni) but is also open to other people interested in themes related to counselling and psychotherapy, namely psychology undergraduate students. The main propose of this Forum is for the year 2 MCP students to pesent and share their research prohects with year 1 MCP students. This way, the former have an opportunity to practice comunication skills useful for their oral defense, and the latter get ideas for their own research and how to organise it.
