The suggestions were welcomed by Director Chu and she emphasised the fact that it is through the support of academic institutions that the private sector can be reached effectively.

Mr. Danny Wong, head of Public Education and Ms. Candy Chan, Head of Marketing at World Vision Macau shared the history of World Vision and its early beginnings in the poverty alleviation mission that began in the 1950s by its founder Dr. Bob Pierce. The talk was attended by Prof. Alex Lobo Marques, Coordinator for the Bachelor of Business Administration - BBA and Prof. Douty Diakite, Coordinator of the Center for Social and Legal Studies, Emil Marques and Year 4 Government Studies Students.
The talk covered the current stay of poverty in the world and also some of the programmes and approaches taken by World Vision. These programmes included Child Sponsorship Programme, Area Development Programme and famine alleviation. In addition, students were engaged in comparing life of a youth in Macao and Malawi, Africa which hit home the disparities between rich and poor in this world.
World Vision has also developed over the years, various publications and field guides for those interested to take part in development of capacity building and community development programmes. The students of USJ Building Communities Class benefited tremendously in the knowledge exchange and obtained first-hand information from the field on exactly how to make a difference in poverty-stricken communities through the words of the practitioner.
USJ School of Business continues to promote an entrepreneurial spirit in its students in the development of innovative learning experiences to foster socially responsible leaders of tomorrow.

ABOUT THE TALK
The experience in Portugal in Private-Public Partnerships (PPPs) has been extensive with huge implications in public finances and political discussion. PPPs are also responsible for a significant increase in infrastructure development in Portugal in the 90s to this date. The experience in Portugal is a showcase for this rapid catching up in the infrastructure gap, but also a showcase of procurement and public contracting with dire implications in public finances. Portugal is also a great example in renegotiation of these contracts and adjustment to more fiscal responsibility. The public lecture will provide several cases of successful, and unsuccessful experiences in road building, healthcare management, and environment management.

About the topic:
The novel “Silence 沈黙” became popular again in 2017 as the movie directed by Martin Scorsese was released worldwide. The film based on a novel by Shusaku Endo and published in 1966 requires a lot of background knowledge of the history of Japan, the history of the Church in Japan, the Hidden Christians as well as of Shusako Endo in order to truly understand the rich meaning of both the novel and the movie.

string(1792) "The new chapel of the University of St Joseph and the Diocesan College of St Joseph was dedicated last Sunday, 23rd of September, by Bishop Stephen Lee. Designed by Japanese architect Koji Yagi, it will be available for daily Mass celebrations, confessions and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
During the homily, the bishop made reference to the chapel’s architectural design that resembled a typhoon of faith that does not destroy but rather spreads the good. The Mass also signalled the beginning of the academic year.
USJ Rector Father Peter Stilwell remarked that the inauguration represents “another step in the development of the University and the College. We expect the place to provide a quality of education and training that gives a good name not only to educational institutions but also to the Diocese to whom they belong.”
Father Stilwell, following the thought of Pope Francis, added that the university has to build bridges. “Instead of creating barriers and identity borders, which are a source of conflict, we should be a space where everyone feels welcome. I think that this is the true meaning of our status as Catholics.” He defended “a Catholic university open to all, which does not condition anyone, but which is based on a fundamental principle of Christianity and humanity, that is, the search for truth – the truth that we find truly revealed in Jesus Christ.”
