The opening ceremony to welcome the second round of students of the “2021 Jiangsu Provincial Government Scholarship Programme of Overseas Studies for Undergraduates” took place on February 8, at both USJ Ilha Verde Campus and Nape Campus.

To promote cooperation and exchanges in higher education between Jiangsu and Macao, and to broaden the international vision of Jiangsu university students, the 2021 Jiangsu Provincial Government Scholarship Programme of Overseas Studies for Undergraduates was launched in July of last year (2021).

After the successful summer programme last year, over 50 students and staff members from Jiangsu province are visiting the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) for another four-day short-term exchange programme from 8 February to 12 February 2022. This exchange trip was postponed prior due to travel restrictions caused by the latest pandemic situation.

The programmes provided by USJ cover two main areas: International Business & Economic Globalisation (at Ilha Verde Campus), lectured face-to-face by professors from the Faculty of Business and Law (FBL), and Environmental Science Policy and Management (at Nape Campus), lectured by professors from the Institute of Science and Environment (ISE).

The opening ceremony was held on the morning of 8 February, 2022, at both Ilha Verde Campus and Nape Campus simultaneously.

Prof. Keith Morrison, Vice-rector for Academic Affairs of USJ, and Prof. Jenny Lao-Phillips, Dean of Faculty of Business and Law, attended the opening ceremony at Ilha Verde Campus. Prof. Keith Morrison delivered the aims and purposes of courses offered by USJ and welcomed students from Jiangsu Province. Ms. Guo Xiangqin, Representative of Jiangsu Education Services for International Exchange, expressed that since the programme was launched during the pandemic, it would be a precious opportunity for students to study at USJ and experience life in Macao.

Prof. Zhang Shuguang, Vice-rector for External Affairs and Institutional Development of USJ, and Prof. David Gonçalves, Dean of the Institute of Science and Environment, attended the opening ceremony at Nape Campus. During the ceremony, Prof. Zhang shared his own experience of studying abroad and encouraged students to inspire others with their stories at USJ, while Prof. David Gonçalves greeted and introduced the research facilities and laboratories of the Nape Campus to all the students, wishing them an enjoyable experience at USJ.

Guests who attended the opening ceremony include: Ms. Guo Xiangqin, Representative of Jiangsu Education Services for International Exchange, Mr. Wang Haitao, Chairman of National Conditions Education Association (Macau), along with professors from the Faculty of Business and Law in charge of teaching the programme, namely, Prof. Alessandro Lampo, Prof. Emil Marques and Prof. Àngelo Patrício Rafael, as well as professors from the Institute of Science and Environment, Programme Coordinator for the Bachelor of Environmental Sciences, Prof. Karen Araño Tagulao and Prof. Thomas Lei.
