The Rector, Prof. Stephen Morgan attended the High Council meeting of Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP) on Friday, January 28, 2022.
On Friday, January 28, 2022, the Rector, Professor Stephen Morgan attended the High Council meeting of Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP), which (along with the Diocese of Macao) founded and continues to oversee the University of Saint Joseph (USJ). As a sign of the close relationship between USJ and UCP, the Rectors of the two universities serve on the highest governing bodies of each other’s institutions.
During his visit to Lisbon, the Rector of UCP, Professor Isabel Capeloa Gil took Professor Morgan to visit UCP’s brand new medical school at Sintra, a facility made possible by the support and sponsorship of the Shanghai-based Fosun Group. The school is pioneering an integrated, problem solving based approach to the training of the next generation of doctors from its state of the art smart-facility. The two rectors also explored the development of joint programmes between the two universities and the exchange of academic staff and students.
Looking to the future – and beyond the pandemic – Rector Morgan observed that USJ was a university in, of and for China but that its roots drew deeply on its Portuguese heritage. “USJ is an example of the one base for cultural exchange and cooperation and part of the one platform for economic and trade development between China, Portugal and the Portuguese speaking countries. USJ is these things or it is nothing: our link with UCP guarantees that.” Morgan said. “It certainly helps that the Rector of UCP grew up in, knows and loves Macao. As Honorary President of our USJ General Council her commitment to the relationship between our two universities is a constant reminder of our firm institutional relationship. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the founding of USJ and I am acutely conscious of the conditions that led to that event. In 1996, the authorities in Beijing, Macao and Portugal saw a unique opportunity for a higher education institution that could embody and promote harmonious relations between China, Portugal and the Portuguese-speaking world. That was our mission then: it remains our mission today.”

Na sexta-feira, dia 28 de Janeiro de 2022, o Reitor, Professor Stephen Morgan, participou na reunião do Conselho Superior da Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP), que (em conjunto com a Diocese de Macau) fundou e continua a supervisionar a Universidade de São José (USJ). Como sinal da próxima relação entre a USJ e a UCP, os Reitores das duas universidades participam nos mais altos corpos governativos de cada uma das instituições.
Durante a sua visita a Lisboa, a Reitora da UCP, Professora Isabel Capeloa Gil, convidou o Professor Morgan a visitar a nova escola médica da UCP em Sintra, uma instalação tornada possível pelo apoio e patrocínio do Grupo Fosun, sediado em Xangai. A escola é pioneira numa abordagem integrada baseada na resolução de problemas, usada na formação da próxima geração de médicos na sua instalação-inteligente state-of-the-art. Os dois Reitores exploraram também o desenvolvimento de programas e o intercâmbio de docentes e estudantes entre as duas universidades
Olhando o futuro – para além da pandemia – O Reitor Morgan comentou que a USJ é uma universidade na China, da China e para a China, mas com raízes profundas na sua herança Portuguesa. “A USJ é um exemplo de base para o intercâmbio cultural e cooperação, e parte da plataforma para o desenvolvimento económico e comercial entre a China, Portugal e os países de língua Portuguesa. A USJ será tudo isto ou não será nada: a nossa ligação à UCP garantirá isso.” Disse Morgan. “É certamente uma vantagem a Reitora da UCP ter crescido em, conhecer e amar Macau. Como Presidente Honorária do nosso Conselho Geral da USJ, o seu compromisso com a relação entre as nossas duas universidades é uma constante garantia da nossa firme relação institucional. Este ano marca o 25º aniversário da fundação da USJ e estou perfeitamente consciente das condições que levaram a esse evento. Em 1996, as autoridades de Pequim, Macau e Portugal viram uma oportunidade única para uma instituição de educação superior que poderia encorpar e promover as relações harmoniosas entre a China, Portugal e o mundo da língua Portuguesa. Essa foi então a nossa missão: e ainda é a nossa missão hoje.”
