The Master in Social Work (Mental Health) programme at USJ Macao is designed to cultivate skilled social workers and practitioners specialising in mental health services within the Greater Bay Area of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. This innovative programme provides students with cutting-edge knowledge and practical skills in both mental health and social work, addressing the increasing societal demand for professionals in this critical area.
As the only Master’s degree programme in Macao focusing specifically on mental health, it uniquely elevates the professional standards of social work in the region. The curriculum builds on the foundation of USJ’s first social work bachelor’s programme established in 2006, evolving to meet community needs as they change. Students will gain essential insights and training that enhance their capabilities in delivering effective mental health services, contributing to the overall improvement of mental health care in Macao.
The programme coordinator is Francisco Botelho.
During the two years of evening course work, Master of Social Work (Mental Health) students hold full-time student status.
Student Experience
The curriculum of this programme is designed to study global and regional social problems, especially in Macao and the Greater Bay Area, with the aim of consolidating the professional learning skills and scientific research abilities of those who are currently working in Macao and its neighbouring social service systems, and to emphasize the integration of production, learning and research, and to study the development of psychosocial work services.
Graduates are required to integrate professional problem or social phenomenon oriented research, and the programme will adopt an evidence-based approach, allowing students to study the problem, and at the same time, allowing them to enhance their professionalism and competence from the perspective of the profession itself, and to promote the construction of community psychosocial rehabilitation teams and their professionalism.

Typical Applicants
- Hold a bachelor degree or equivalent qualifications in a related field (Requirements for enrolment in accordance with the provisions of Article 20, paragraph 8 of Law 10/2017 ‘On the Higher Education System’.
