The press conference on "The Needs of Different Stages of Marriage and Family Life Course in Macao", organised by the Macao Catholic Family Advisory Council (MCAF), was held on June 25, 2021 (Friday) at the Fátima Auditorium in USJ Ilha Verde Campus.
Around 100 attendees were present including the Chancellor of USJ, Most Rev. Bishop Stephen Lee Bun-Sang; Rector of USJ; Mr. Lei Lai Peng, Director of the Department of Family and Community Services of the Social Work Bureau; Prof. Elisa Monteiro, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Education (FSSE) of USJ; Prof. Vitor Teixeira, Head of the Department of Psychology of FSSE; along with priests, professors, representatives of other social welfare organisation, the diocese and schools.
The study subjects were the service users of Macao's 7 social service agencies with close cooperation. The agencies, mostly situated in the communities with dense population, mainly serve teenagers, children, families and the senior group. Besides, casino workers and parents whose kids study in primary or secondary schools, kindergartens or nurseries were also involved in the study. Finally, total 1,006 valid questionnaires were collected and analysed by dioceses in Macao Peninsula and Taipa.
Prof. Helen Liu, Department of Social Work at USJ, noted that the research had studied the needs and crisis tasks of Macao family life at different stages from the perspective of society and religion. The study showed that women took more crisis tasks in different stages of family development. In terms of taking care of children, women devoted more time than men. When children entered adolescence, family relationship would be affected. Contrariwise, inequalities were found in the housework division between men and women. The study, trying to help women voice in family, suggested women be given chances to express their difficulties and needs. What's more, the study also suggested strengthening the participation of men in housework and parenting. To foster fathers' education and care for their kids, the study has provided them with more diversified and characterised support services that help them realise a father's role and functions and develop in family so that men and women can share family and social responsibilities more equally.
Prof. Liu further explained that the shift of work influenced parenting quality which would cause adaptation problems in teenagers' growth. Meanwhile, different work and rest of life would make husband and wife lose communication and interaction, imposing negative impacts on family harmony. Therefore, more attention should be paid to strengthening the marriage relationship. Companies could encourage and promote their shift workers to take courses or participate in activities together with their spouses so as to improve their communication skills in marriage.
The study shows that more than half of the Catholics were more willing to receive life education and hospice care services that were relatively lower in risk. On the contrary, only 30% non-Catholics were willing to receive life education but unwilling to talk about topics about death and hospice care because for the elderly preparing for death would bring them a lot of pressure. Even those who were considering or scheduling for death or hospice care may be forced by the reality like poor health. Therefore, it's very important to improve the education and promotion of hospice care, making arrangements for the funeral and death education. In addition, the promotion of life education should be comprehensively carried out. It should not only focus on promoting the education of the elderly but should also be included in schools' curriculum as it's also urgently needed in the healthy growth of students and in shaping their life and moral values. Life education, including hospice care and arrangements for a funeral, should also be promoted from family by allowing family members to participate in the arrangements so that they could respect, admit and cherish life, and so that the traditional and modern family model could be changed.
In terms of the services of future planning for the marriage and family life, more than 60% Catholics and 40% non-Catholics took the family life education as priority. Family life education is the community education with prevention and development functions. It could improve family functions, strengthen family ties and prevent broken family through a series of educational and promotional activities. Professor Liu suggested the contents of family development include: self-recognition and self-reflection abilities; marriage relationship, strengthening of the concept of marriage, communication and interaction between husband and wife; sex life in marriage, lack of sex education and promotion of preventive work; parenting education, communication skills between parents and kids, enhancement of the interaction between parents and children; moral education of teenagers, skills to cope with social realities; adolescent rebellion, parents' emotion management, communication skills between parents and kids; cooperation / communication between parents and schools.
Apart from that, channels for publicising the sustainable measures of promoting premarital education, attracting more targeted audience, and caring about the using of family and marriage services of young generation. More attention should be paid to the support and service for these women before and after childbirth such as paying attention to the emotion adaptation change before and after delivery and establishing more courses related to the depression before and after childbirth.
Last but not least, targeting at social and pastoral services, Professor Liu mentioned that spouses should be more tolerant and supportive to build a more positive family life. After the childbirth, in particular, husband and wife should be aware of sex education, different stages of marriage, and the foundation of relationship, emotion and mutual respect. The study suggested the pastoral services improve and promote the community services for the elderly. It suggested building more daily centres in different regions to offer daily services to the elderly and enhance the prevention and interference.

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) held its 2021 Post-Graduate Diploma in Education Graduation Ceremony on Saturday, 26th June, at the Auditório Centenário de Fátima in USJ Ilha Verde Campus, with a total of 197 students graduating this year, including 59 students from the English Programme and 138 from the Chinese Programme.
The ceremony was officiated by the Rector of USJ, Rev. Prof. Stephen Morgan. During remarks, Rector congratulated and encourage the students saying that “Society, Macao, China needs men and women with your commitment to be the teachers of this and forthcoming generations, to shape in a very particular way the minds and characters of those children you will teach.”.
The Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) prepares students to become effective and culturally sensitive primary or secondary school teachers. The year-long programme explores different educational theories, concepts and perspectives within the field of teaching, curriculum development and evaluation, educational psychology, and communication technology.
Following the PGDE Graduation Ceremony, the USJ Congregation 2021 will be taking place on the 3rd July 2021 at 10:30am at the Macao Tower.
"The statements made to the press by Mr. José Pereira Coutinho concerning the termination of the contracts of three Macao resident staff misrepresent entirely what he was told by the University of Saint Joseph (USJ). Far from replacing local staff with non-local staff, in reorganising the teaching of English at USJ, the University has been able to increase the proportion of local resident staff and reduce the number of blue card holders in our English Language Centre. Mr Coutinho was told this only yesterday (24 June 2021). It is to be regretted that he has today chosen knowingly to say exactly the opposite.
The proportion of local academic staff has risen from 70%, when I became Rector in May 2020, to 76% now. Our admin staff remain 97% local residents. Furthermore, the proportion of total staff who are local residents has risen from 84% to 88%.
USJ is committed to the employment of resident staff wherever possible and only employs blue card holders when the specific skills needed are not available in Macao or if it is necessary for us to preserve our character as an international university which represents a real example of the one platform for connecting China and Portuguese-speaking countries and one base for harmonious inter-cultural exchange between East and West. Any suggestion to the contrary is simply untrue."

The MCAF Association has always been concerned about family health and development of Macao citizens, therefore it conducted a survey on "Macao Residents’ Needs in Different Stages of Marriage and Family Life", with the cooperation of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), the Diocese of Macau and the Social Welfare Bureau; and sponsored by the Macau Foundation.
The purpose of this research is to plan and design social or pastoral services to meet the needs relating to a healthy family life. In addition, the findings of this study provide suggestions and directions to design family life education, premarital preparation and continual marital accompaniment.
The study subjects were the service users of Macao's seven social service agencies with close cooperation. Grand Opening:
Date & Time: June 25th 2021, 6:30 pm
Location: Kent Wong Gallery and Residential Hall Basement, USJ Ilha Verde Campus
Since 2009, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) and the Correctional Services Bureau have been cooperating to develop an outreach programme to prepare incarcerated individuals for reentry into society by providing junior college courses to enhance their professional knowledge and increase their employment opportunities. The programme aims to guide and encourage incarcerated individuals to improve their professional quality to the college level.
The outreach programme has a rigorous application and enrolment process, in which 1) prison inmates are required to write and submit a 500-word personal statement; 2) applicants' information is reviewed and an interview is conducted to explain the motivation for enrolling in the social work outreach programme; and 3) students who wish to continue to participate in the outreach programme must have the initiative and maintain good academic performance. There are currently 10 inmates enrolled in the junior college education programme, with students ranging in age from 23 to 43 years old. It is expected that the programme will continue to enrol inmates who are willing and qualified this summer.
The Prison Outreach Programme Leader, Prof. Helen Liu, highlighted the key points of the Outreach Programme and its benefits to the community. The programme is divided into three main phases: I) to take social work courses for inmates in prison; II) to take several subjects for rehabilitated inmates at University of Saint Joseph as they are released from prison and reintegrated into society. Students may opt to skip this stage if they wish to directly proceed to stage 3; and III) to complete the programme with a degree awarded. One student is currently enrolled in Phase III at USJ Macao.
There are currently eight full-time faculty members and two social service agency directors on the outreach programme team. The subjects in the programme are subject to the learning schedule for the Bachelor's Degree in Social Work on campus. Prisoners will spend six years in completing a majority of social work courses in the prison, except for the internship which will be conducted on campus after release. Those who complete the whole programme will be granted a relevant college diplomat and able to work in relevant industries like social services.
The content of the course is generally in line with the Social Work Department's curriculum. Instruction is primarily face-to-face, supplemented by reading requirements, in-class discussions, group activities and assignments, and examinations. The faculty from the USJ Macao highly recognise the class performance and learning attitude of incarcerated individuals, changing the negative and stereotyped image of the latter. Professor Liu also said that the in-prison junior college programme has helped restore prison inmates' self-confidence and self-efficacy.
Prof. Liu added, "We have received many suggestions and feedback from students in the outreach programme. Previously, the USJ Macao strove for many resources for incarcerated individuals, such as books and English dictionaries. Currently, it is establishing a scholarship for incarcerated individuals with economic difficulties and outstanding academic performance. We have responded to prisoners' requests for more courses so that they can make good use of their time in prison to take college courses and become more competitive and self-controlled when they rejoin society. We also actively encourage prisoners to return to campus after their release and complete their remaining courses to obtain a college diploma, so that in time they will be able to influence others through their own life stories, just as the mission and attitude of social workers.
Prof. Helen Liu is currently working on a research project on the Outreach Programme, "Resilience in Corrections After the Implementation of the Outreach Programme: a Pathway to Rehabilitation," which is supported by a two-year research grant from the Macao Education and Youth Development Bureau. The purpose of the study is to promote research related to the establishment of higher education in prisons and to work with the Correctional Services Bureau's Coloane Prison to establish a high-quality and effective outreach programme. At the same time, it will explore the path to rehabilitation for ex-offenders who have attended outreach programmes.
The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) is a leader in research and policy development in the area of inclusive education in Macao. In addition to the newly inaugurated Domingos Lam research center in education, the participation in conferences at the regional and international levels, and awareness and fundraising events, we have also been providing public lectures open to the general public, where the community can learn more about evidenced-based best practices in inclusive education.
USJ aims to continue to promote these activities in the future in order to contribute to a more inclusive and equal society. Kindly check out our past and upcoming event in this and other areas in our events page.
It is a wonderful opportunity for applicants to learn more about the Master of Community Development (MCD), Master of Government Studies (MGS) and Master of Lusophone and International Public Law (MLIPL) programmes of year 2021/2022 offered by the Faculty of Business and Law. Participants will also get to know students and alumni from each different programme. Anyone interested in finding out more about the programmes are welcome!

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) held a press conference on USJ Prison Outreach Programme (hereinafter referred to as the "Programme") at the Don Bosco Auditorium in USJ Ilha Verde Campus, on 10th June 2021. Present at the press conference were Rector of USJ, Rev. Prof. Stephen Morgan; Vice-Rector of USJ, Prof. Álvaro Barbosa; Administrator of USJ, Dr. Alejandro Salcedo Garcia; Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Education of USJ, Prof. Elisa Monteiro; USJ Prison Outreach Programme Leader, Prof. Helen Liu; Head of the Office for Student and Alumni Affairs, Ms. Teresa Loong; Division Head of Social Assistance of the Education and Training Division of the Correctional Services Bureau, Ms. Candida Ho; and Team Leader of Education and Training Team 1, Ms. Cheang Choi Hong.
The USJ Prison Outreach was officially launched in 2009 with the cooperation of the Correctional Services Bureau. The Programme offers incarcerated individuals with an undergraduate programme that is designed to improve their professional knowledge, guide and encourage them to achieve their academic goals, raise their chance of employment, and prepare them for a better future social reintegration.
As a higher education institution in Macao, USJ is committed to making a positive impact in the local community, “USJ takes seriously our responsibility for the sustainable development and improvement of Macao society. This programme is a key element in discharging our duty to the wider society” said the Rector of USJ, Rev. Prof. Stephen Morgan.
During the press conference, Prof. Helen Liu introduced the key points and the main phases of the Programme, “The programme’s teaching team is mainly made up of full-time professors from USJ with some members of the team coming from certain social service agencies invited to participate in the programme. Courses in the Prison Outreach Programme are drawn from USJ’s Bachelor of Social Work programme. Within six years, inmates can complete most of the modules required for a degree. Once released from prison, they can enrol in the social work internship course as full-time students of USJ to complete their social work degree. With a social work degree from USJ, career paths in social service and other related work are opened wide for them to pursue.”.
The Faculty of Social Sciences and Education of USJ highly recognises the class performance and learning attitude of incarcerated individuals, changing the negative and stereotyped image of the latter. The undergraduate programme in prison is conducive to helping incarcerated individuals recover their confidence and self-efficacy.
Currently, USJ is establishing a scholarship scheme for incarcerated individuals who have demonstrated a high degree of academic aptitude and performance but have financial difficulties.

Planned joint initiatives include cooperation on joint cultural activities, masterclasses and workshops; and the development of international exchange programmes, French language programmes and the internationally recognised French language proficiency diploma DELF-DALF in the upcoming academic year.
“We think that this partnership is important, as we are acting not only towards the platform for the Portuguese Speaking countries but also, as a European-style university, that can offer courses from other parts of Europe, and this agreement with Alliance Française makes sense for the university, hopefully for the student community and for Macao,” said Rev. Deacon Stephen Morgan, Rector of USJ.
Both parties believe that this will be instrumental in promoting the French language and culture in Macao.

Macrophages, traditionally known as chief defenders of our body, play essential roles in tissue repair. Because their phenotype is highly plastic, it may be feasible to regulate their functions and harness their power to aid tissue regeneration. Inspired by microbial signals, our team have devised a series of glucomannan polymers in various shapes and forms to target carbohydrate-recognising receptors on macrophages – e.g. toll-like receptors (TLRs). These polymers can stimulate macrophages to secrete different sets of cytokines, with their structure-activity relationship investigated. Our long-term goal is to translate these glycans into therapeutic tools for regenerative medicine.

string(3611) "Covid-19 impacts our life and world dramatically. Scientists claim, that this situation might have been caused – among other factors – by a wrong treatment of nature by humans. Did nature put its brakes on to correct human behavior? Can we humans discover in nature how to act correctly? Does nature help us to get to know what to do? Philosophically speaking, should actions follow our being (agere sequitur esse), and is ethics fundamentally hooked up with reality and ontology? (bonum et verum convertuntur). Does the “ought” follow from the “is”, and should human life and societies comply with how things are?
After overcoming the mechanistic reductionism of the “natural fallacy”, which denies “value judgments” originating from “is” or facts, this Lecture Series attempts to trace back question of “natural goodness” (Philippa Foot), morals and good actions “in accord with reason” (S. Thomas Aquinas, S.Th. I-II.21.1.; ST I-II, 90.1). The philosophical and catholic tradition calls this the morality of the “natural law”. The lectures shed light on development and relevance of Natural Law from different philosophical and theological angles.
About the Talk:
The minimal divine command thesis is roughly that our moral duties are grounded in God’s commands. Traditionally, divine command theory has been seen as a competitor to natural law theory. Natural Law theory is made up of the following two tenets: (1) Morality is objective and (2) Morality can be derived from human nature. In this lecture, I synthesize the two moral theories and argue that both theories have much to gain by being synthesized.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Tyler Dalton McNabb is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Saint Joseph, Macau. Dr. McNabb is the author of Religious Epistemology (CUP), Co-author of Plantingian Religious Epistemology and World Religions(Lexington), and co-editor and contributor of Debating Christian Religious Epistemology: Five Views on the Knowledge of God. Dr. McNabb has also authored/co-authored over a dozen articles that have been featured in journals such as Religious Studies, European Journal of Philosophy of Religion, Open Theology, Heythrop Journal, and Philosophia Christi.

string(3730) "About the Talk:
Telomeres, the ends of eukaryotic chromosomes, shorten at each cell division contributing to aging. When reaching a critical length, they trigger DNA damage responses and p53-dependent cell cycle arrest, culminating in apoptosis or senescence. Telomere shortening is counteracted by telomerase (TERT). Our group has previously characterized the zebrafish telomerase mutant (tert) and directly compared it to natural aging animals. Telomerase mutants have shorter telomeres, premature aging and reduced lifespan. Strikingly, the zebrafish gut is one of the first organs to show functional and structural decline in both mutants and aged animals. Gut dysfunction is accompanied by telomeric DNA damage, stabilization of p53, reduced cell proliferation, increased apoptosis and senescence. These are accompanied by immune cell infiltrates and expression of inflammatory cytokines. Our central hypothesis is that telomere shortening leading to cell senescence and chronic inflammation of the gut initiates systemic organ dysfunction and aging. We are directly testing the impact of telomere shortening in zebrafish aging by either compensating telomerase only in the gut (sufficiency) or by removing its function only in this organ (necessity). We will accompany these studies by analyzing and manipulating both the senescence associated inflammatory responses (SASP) and gut microbiota content in this process.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Miguel Godinho Ferreira is an expert in telomere biology, cell cycle regulation and DNA repair both in fission yeast and zebrafish. His research focused on the molecular mechanisms of cell division and how damaged DNA (stemming DNA replication and telomeres) signals to block cell division in normal cells and how this process is deregulated in cancer cells. Since 2006, Dr. Ferreira works as an independent researcher focusing on the molecular mechanisms underlying genome protection and their consequences. In 2012, Dr. Ferreira was awarded the Howard Hughes Medical Institute(HHMI) International Early Career Scientist award that allowed him to incorporate cancer research in his laboratory. In 2017, he joined the Institute for Research on Cancer and Aging of Nice (IRCAN), France, and was recruited as a scientist to the French state (CNRS) achieving the position of Directeur de Recherche 2ème Classe (DR2).
The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) launched yesterday (1 June 2021) an internal COVID-19 Vaccination Incentive Programme to encourage employees to take the COVID-19 vaccines ahead of the coming academic year.
This initiative aims to protect the health and safety of employees and students alike, supporting the Macao SAR goal in combating the pandemic and preventing a pandemic outbreak in the local community by building herd immunity.
The initiative specifies that any member of staff who has received the first dose of vaccine by 30th June 2021 will be eligible for an additional two days annual leave, and for those who have received both doses of the vaccine by 31st August 2021 will be eligible to enter a lucky draw to win a two-night staycation package in local resort.
Nearly 100 participants from the higher education sector, spanning from five continents, have come together to share and discuss under the overarching theme: The Alignment of Student Affairs and Services with Higher Education’s Goals of Social Justice. The topics focused on four selected UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Education, Gender Equality, Reduced Inequalities, and Climate Action; and Student Affairs in the COVID-19 pandemic.
The rich and comprehensive Summit included regional and inter-regional discussions and sharing among the Student Affairs and Services practitioners, as well as a keynote speech by Miss Margaret Biggs from Queen's University and IDRC, a student panel delivered by four students from the host, University of Toronto, and 25 pre-recorded YouTube video presentations from Student Affairs professionals from all five continents.
Amongst the videos was Prof. Maria Rita Silva's contribution, the only academic representative from the Greater Bay Area in the Summit, as she discuses the development and ongoing work of USJ in the SDGs, how USJ converted initiatives into structured programmes, and how to identify the future SDG areas for improvement.
In the regional and inter-regional hubs, participants shared their best practices and thoughts about aligning Student Affairs with SDGs. They looked forward to having a greater area for collaboration among the associations. Both differences and similarities are found among the regions, in terms of both strategies and solutions to promote the SDGs and our agenda around the achievement of social justice goals.
The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) organises several events and free public lectures that provide access to educational resources in different areas and topics every academic year.
These events aim to raise awareness and disseminate evidence-based practices and interventions. Some events bring together USJ students and professors, and some are open to partner institutions and the general public.
