The University of Saint Joseph held its annual Open Day at the Saint Joseph Seminary Campus (next to the Sir Robert Ho Tung Library) last Saturday, hosting nearly 5 hundred prospective students who had the opportunity to taste life at the university.
The Open Day began with a warm and cozy ceremony of ribbon cutting attended by distinguish guests including the Bishop of Macau, Dom Jose Lai, Director of the Department of Culture and Education for Liaison Office in Macau Mr. Hong Bo, Deputy Director of Education and Youth Affairs Bureau Ms Kuok Sio Lai, Functional Head (Group of Higher Education Institutions Coordination) of Tertiary Education Services Office Ms Io Iok Fong, principles and representatives from different schools and associations. During the ceremony, the University thanked Macau Foundation for sponsoring the Open Day, and Coca-Cola Co. Ltd. for sponsoring drinks for the event.
Visitors were welcomed by students of the university and invited to visit different booths and information rooms set up across the heritage campus. A bamboo pavilion was featured during the day, which USJ’s architecture students had spent the whole weekend building. The Open Day’s programme included language corners, a mock admissions interview corner, radio practice, snapshot campaign and sports competitions. Students from Colégio Diocesano de Sao José 5th and 6th School, Yuet Wah College, Anglican Chou Kou High School and Escola Tung Sin Tong challenged USJ students to a Friendly Basketball Match.
The international students at the University arranged different cultural experiences for the guests, including beautiful Portuguese songs performed by singer Tomas. Inside the classrooms, students and professors stood by to introduce key features of each programme to the visitors. The Faculties of Religious Studies, Humanities, Administration and Leadership, Psychology and Education, Creative Industries, the Institute of Science and Environment, and the Pre-University programme showcased the work of their students and faculty.
Prospective students learned also that USJ has updated its fees, reducing the costs for local students. The University of Saint Joseph features English as the teaching medium and has students and faculty from nearly 60 nationalities. Construction of its new campus at Ilha Verde is progressing smoothly and is expected to be in use during the 2015/2016 academic year.

The USJ project is innovative, employs the state-of-art technology, equipment, and materials; gathers USJ/Faculty of Creative Industries students and professors; and joins members of different faculty departments: Design, Communication & Media and Architecture. Furthermore, it aims to combine design and technology as an advanced form of active communication.
The project key concept is based on the Lean Forward “Goatway” (QR Goat). Indeed, the “goatway” represents a metaphorical conception combines synchronically design & technology. Initially it draws the observer’s attention with the purpose of establishing a visual relationship. Afterwards, the appealing material dimension of the design is individually retrieved as an instrument of involvement to explore the endless virtual and global discovery. Therefore, the goat design transforms relationship through technology, into an electronic wider window that instantly connects the observer to an Asian world, in which only reveries rule. All in all, the QR goat is well established as a leading path to a QR code “goatway”, and likewise a groundbreaking means of transportation that suggests an exclusive lean forward moment.
Currently, the preparation phase is taking place in the Venetian facilities and it is due to finish next February 5, 2015.
穿越“ Goatway ”

Last Saturday 24 January 2015, USJ was invited to participate in the annual Macau Diocesan School Association Fair 2015 organized by the Macau Diocesan Schools Association. Our Rector was invited to the opening ceremony and our University of Saint Joseph Students' Association (USJSA) together with our Admissions Office were present to promote our programmes and engaged the students from kindergarten to secondary with games. It was FUN and our booth was always filled with students and parents. It was a great opportunity for the local community to know USJ better.

ABOUT THE EVENT
On November 8th, 2013, typhoon Haiyan devastated portions of Southeast Asia, particularly in the Philippines. Figures from 14 February 2014 estimated that in the Philippines, over 6000 had been killed and 28,600 injured. The sheer size of this natural disaster with its brutally devastating consequences on 14.1 million people (including 5 million school-aged children) has galvanized Macau’s civil society: professionals from different fields representing the non-governmental organization Architecture Sans Frontières Macau (ASF-M), the University of Saint Joseph, Macau’s catholic community, Macau Rotary Central, local and international schools have gathered around the idea of rebuilding schools, health clinics and other community buildings.Almost one year after it hit the Philippines, signs of the devastation caused by typhoon Hay an are still visible across the country’s affected urban and rural landscapes. Earlier assessments reported extensive damage to infrastructure and public buildings, including the destruction of a large number of elementary and high schools that lay in the path of the typhoon. The Western Visayas islanders haven’t also been forefront recipients of international aid- although the world pledged to assist, financial aid to the victims can best be described as a “very slow trickle’.An assessment mission to Roxas City (Capiz Province) led by members of the Macau NGO- Architecture Sans Frontieres- was carried out: 7 schools were visited and their overall conditions and most urgent needs assessed. Mission findings were shared with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the Philippines and with Shelter Cluster a mechanism coordinated by the International federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to support people affected by natural disasters and conflicts.
Based on the assessment mission’s report ASF-M board decided to prioritize the construction of a 2-classroom building which will house a class of Grade Five and a Kindergarten in Punta Cogon barangay. This school serves 186 students – K2 to Grade 6 – from a community whose main income comes from survival fisheries. The new building design will follow the typical 2-classroom project issued by the Philippine Government and will incorporate additional improvements that will result from this design bootcamp.

Fr. Ambrose Mong, OP, visiting professor at the Faculty of Religious Studies, University of St. Joseph, Macau has a new book that just got out of the press. It is entitled
Dialogue Derailed: Joseph Ratzinger’s War Against Pluralist Theology (2015; 325 pages). The book was published Pickwick Publications in Eugene, Oregon. The book was reviewed by Peter C. Phan (Georgetown University) and Stephen B. Bevans (Catholic Theological Union, Chicago).
Phan in his foreword to the book writes: “With painstaking research, impeccable scholarship, penetrating analysis, and exemplary fair-mindedness, Mong digs deep into Ratzinger’s … background to reveal his Eurocentric bias…. His work is the first analysis and assessment of the Bavarian’s theologian’s work from the perspective of Asian realities.”
According to Bevans, “Mong carefully and respectfully presents Ratzinger’s entire theological system and argues that as brilliant as it is, it is unable to dialogue with the cultural and religious context of Asia, or anyplace except the developed West.”
Fr. Ambrose Mong holds an MA in English from the University of British Columbia, an STB from the Angelicum University in Rome, and an MPhil and PhD in Religious Studies from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Congratulations, Fr. Mong!
