About the Talk
Hearing loss creates barriers to communication and potentially leads to language delay and other cognitive and social psychological consequences that hamper the literacy development and school performance of deaf and hard-of-hearing (HDD) children. To tackle this problem, one recent proposal is to prescribe hearing devices and speech and language therapy to HDD children to enhance their hearing and oral language performance, and at the same time, expose them to sign language, a barrier-free visual language, in order to strengthen their conceptual foundation of language knowledge. The emergence of Sign Linguistics research has proven beyond doubt that sign language has a linguistic system independent of the surrounding spoken language, and, as a natural language, is acquirable by humans. As such, empirical studies on the acquisition of a spoken language and a sign language either simultaneously or sequentially at a young age (i.e. bimodal bilingual acquisition) have begun to show that both HDD and hearing children are potentially competent bilingual language users, if certain conditions are met.
In this presentation, we argue that Sign Bilingualism and Co-enrolment (SLCO) in a regular school setting potentially fulfills such conditions. By way of demonstrating how the SLCO model works in a programme conducted in HK, we highlight the ingredients for strengthening the bimodal bilingual development of DHH and hearing students in the classroom, thereby removing the language barrier for the creation of an inclusive ecosystem in a regular school environment.
About the Speaker
Prof. Gladys Tang received her doctoral degree in applied linguistics at the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom. Her research interests are language acquisition and language pedagogy. Her interest in sign language research also took her to embark on a series of research projects in recent years on the linguistics of Hong Kong Sign Language, the acquisition of sign language and the development of deaf literacy by deaf children. She has published on second language acquisition, second language pedagogy, sign linguistics, sign language acquisition and deaf education. She is Director of the Centre for Sign Linguistics and Deaf Studies, Asian liaison of International Sign Linguistics Society and member of the Advisory Board of Sign Language Linguistic Society.

About the Talk
This lecture is about the poetry of Camilo Pessanha, his intensive philosophical reflection, in the wake of Antero de Quental. “...Um resto de batel (...) para não afundar na treva imensa: “the remains of a boat, so as not to sink into the immense darkness”, pleads the verse which, at the beginning of his poetic career, mirrors the metaphysical pain of Camilo Pessanha. The poet finds himself in a universe without God and submited to a life not glorified as a Destiny. Pessanha’s verses are imbued with oriental wisdom, not as an exotic element, but, along with opium, as a kind of narcotic, a sort of slight balm, yet able to mitigate an incurable metapshysical pain.

We are glad to share with the whole USJ Community the results of the 9th Macau Youth Knowledge Competition of National Conditions that was held on 4th May 2017 at Star World Hotel.
The competition was tough and answering their questions requires deep technical knowledge and understanding on the aerospace industry in China. Moreover, the rain and thunderstorms also led to severe traffic disruption before the competition. However, the USJ team members spent a huge amount of time to prepare for this competition and overcame all of these obstacles. Ultimately, all their hard work was paid off and they won the champion in the end.
The team members of the USJ team are Pang Weng Chong, Bowen (BARCH), Chio Ka Fai, Simon (BGS) and Lo Kai Chon , Jack (BSW). Prof Maria Espadinha, our Vice-Rector, was present in the Award Ceremony to support the team.
Congratulations to the team members! You made USJ proud again!

string(2008) "The University of Saint Joseph invited a consultant indicated by the British Accreditation Council to undertake a pre-accreditation review of the university, between 24 to 27 April. This was part of USJ's ongoing preparation for Institutional Accreditation.
The consultant, Mr. Ian Fleming, former inspector of BAC and QAA, carried out a formal inspection in the form of a mock Institutional Accreditation by BAC. The six areas inspected included:
Governance, Strategy and Financial Management;
Academic Management and Administration;
Teaching, Learning and Assessment;
Student Recruitment, Support, Guidance and Progression;
Premises, Facilities and Learning Resources; and
Quality Management, Assurance and Enhancement.
Of the 27 standards under these six areas of inspection USJ fully met 18 and partially met 6. The 3 standards “not met” were in the area of quality management, and this pre-accreditation exercise was precisely part of the consolidation of those procedures.
USJ received high commendation in this mock accreditation for:
- its facilities and premises, due especially to its state-of-the-art new campus in Ilha Verde;
- its library resources and education tradition;
- its small class size; and
- its support to academic staff for career enhancement and research.
Future action to be taken by the university includes consolidating its policies and procedures for clearer referencing, and developing an internal quality assurance manual to help enhance teaching, learning and assessment. The university will also engage students directly in future QA processes and performance reviews.
The result of the mock-accreditation was positive, though there is much still to enhance and develop. According to the consultant, if things proceed as they have done so far, USJ should be ready for international accreditation in a year or so, after settling into its new campus."

ABOUT THE TALK
At the mention of exceptional abilities, IQ and giftedness come to mind. However, the term exceptional ability refers to that capability of an individual who can achieve at a level of capacity that is significantly in advance of his/her peer group. In mainstream schools, students with exceptional abilities are always considered academically gifted and/or talented with a high level of intelligence or an IQ score of more than 130 or in the 98th percentile range. However, this is not always the case.
There are those whose exceptional abilities are found in non-academic areas and they possess the inherent inclination to react intensely to individually different stimuli and hence, amplify socio-emotional growth.
Termed as overexcitabilities by Kazimierz Dabrowski (b.1902-d.1980), there are five categories of overexcitabilities that are manifested in different forms of socio-emotional behavioral challenges: psychomotor, sensual, intellectual,
imaginational and emotional intensities. A clear understanding of these overexcitabilities will help teachers to better understand why their students with exceptional abilities are behaving in certain ways or manners.

About the Talk
The lecture will be discussing, in a very intuitive and accessible manner, the behaviour of materials, more specifically of rocks, at different conditions of temperature and pressure, and over time and under the action of forces. Then, the difference between elastic solids and viscous liquids will be discussed, because these are the two main behaviours of rocks, from the cold and low pressure surface of the Earth to its very high temperature and very high pressure core. the behaviour of elastic, viscous and mixed visco-elastic materials like rocks will be shown using analogies and materials. To finalize this introduction, the forces acting in the Earth's interior, and their effects will be included. Based on this knowledge of rock behaviour and forces, we will travel from the Earth's surface down to the core, through its main layers and their mineral and mechanical properties, and along the most dynamic settings of the Earth's interior in the framework of Plate Tectonics: mantle convection, subduction zones, continental and oceanic rifts, and unstable topographic reliefs. In the end, movies of numerical models of some fundamental processes related to Plate Tectonics will be shown.
About the Speaker
Fernando Ornelas Marques got his PhD in Geodynamics from the University of Lisbon, where he currently is Assistant Professor with Habilitation. His main areas of research are in Tectonics, Tectonophysics and Geodynamics, aiming to contribute to a better understanding of the way the Earth works. He uses modelling (experimental and numerical) as a tool to investigate the Physics governing geological processes still not well understood, at all scales, from the millimetres (e.g. the behaviour of rigid bodies in flowing high viscosity fluids) to the thousands of kilometres (e.g. subduction initiation).
For several years now, he has been a member of the Editorial Board of the prestigious scientific journal Tectonophysics, from Elsevier. He is currently the Head of Research Project MEGAHazards2, dedicated to investigate the instability of oceanic volcanic islands (Hawaii, Azores, Canaries and Cape Verde), their destruction by large-scale landslides, and the generation of tsunamis."

About the Talk
Giuseppe Castiglione (Lang Shining, Milano 1688- Beijing 1766) was a devoted Jesuit missionary, and a truly innovative and cross-cultural artist. His talent was used by the Society of Jesus for diplomatic purposes for example to win over the appreciation from the Manchurian court.
All of the religious works Castiglione painted for Beijing churches and private chapels are lost. Significantly, we can still admire Lang Shining’s secular projects (such as the Western style buildings of Yuanmingyuan Garden) to try to understand his trans-formative mental journey in Qing dynasty China, as well as his contribution to early modern Chinese aesthetic.
In fact, working for three Emperors Castiglione bridged Italian sensibility with a Chinese sense of beauty.
The conference highlights Castiglione’s vocational upbringing in Italy as well as his Jesuit spirituality which laid the groundwork for his achievements in Beiing. This is a first step to better analyze which sources and references inspired Lang Shining’s masterpieces at the Qing court.

ABOUT THE TALK
The people of Europe, in creating an ever closer union among them, are resolved to share a peaceful future based on common values. The roots of an ethical foundation are in Greek philosophy (humanism), Christianity and Roman law. Conscious of its spiritual and moral heritage, the Union is founded on the indivisible, universal values of human dignity, freedom, equality and solidarity. Based on the principles of democracy the Union creates an area of freedom, security, comon good and justice. EU seeks to promote balanced and sustainable development and ensures free movement of persons, services, goods and capital, and the freedom of establishment. To this end, it is necessary to strenghten the protection of fundamental rights in the light of changes in society, social progress and scientific and technological developments by making those rights more visible in a Charter.

About the Talk
During Mesozoic ages, SE China region, where Macao and Hong Kong are located, was affected by plutonic and volcanic events generated during the Indosinian (Triassic) and Yanshanian (Jurasic-Cretaceous) orogenies, overprinting all previous events in the
South China Fold Belt.
This event aims to contribute towards a deeper understanding of the geology of Macao and Hong Kong. It will be discussed the genesis and evolution of the Mesozoic magmatic rocks observed in this area and how their geodynamic evolution relates to each other.
Local and international researchers, with a large experience in the study of magmatic rocks and in the geology of this region, will give key talks to share their knowledge on the geological features of Macao and Hong Kong within the broader context of SE China. During this session, there will be a workshop where you can have the opportunity to observe rock samples and correspondent microscopy thin sections from this region. The event will culminate with a field trip to Coloane (Macao)."
