This important event opened on the morning of March 22, at the Municipal Auditorium of Vila do Conde, Porto, with a Public Talk titled “Macao’s urban mangroves: a coastal treasure” delivered online by Prof. Karen Arano Tagulao, Programme Coordinator for the Bachelor of Environmental Sciences of the Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ).
The public talk was attended by a group of students, teachers, board representative from CIIMAR (Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research), the councilor in charge of education and environment for Vila do Conde Municipality and other members of the community.
In her talk, Prof. Tagulao shared the value of mangroves for climate change adaptation and mitigation, emphasising the crucial roles of scientific research and community outreach to achieve success. She also shared insights on the common environmental challenges that Macao and Porto face, given that both are coastal cities, and how these can be addressed using nature-based solutions (mangroves in Macao and salt-marshes in Portugal).
The exhibition's official opening was held in the afternoon at the Center of Environmental Monitoring and Interpretation (CIMIA) in Vila do Conde. The event was attended by the Mayor of the Municipality of Vila do Conde, Mr. Vítor Manuel Moreira Costa, the City councilor of Vila do Conde Municipality, Mr. Mário Reis, President of CIIMAR´s board, Prof. Vitor Vasconcelos, and Coordinator of CMIA, Prof. Cristina Calheiros.
"The mangroves exhibition is a product of many years of research on the local mangroves in Macao, translated into a form for the general public to understand better. We believe that translating Science into Action is equally important as the science we do." -expressed Prof. Tagulao - "The success of the USJ on-campus exhibition in 2020 prompted the University to bring this work around the local schools since September 2021 to the present, continuing to inspire and educate the younger generation to protect this important coastal treasure better. This time, the exhibition is showcased in Portugal, on the 15th anniversary of the Centro de Monitorização e Interpretação Ambiental."
This work is supported by the Science and Technology Development Fund of Macao (FDCT), Clean the World Foundation and Las Vegas Sands (Eco-360) through the Drop by Drop Project. The current mobile exhibition is being implemented under the project “Wetlands for Climate Change mitigation and adaptation in Macao” under the coordination of Prof. Karen Arano Tagulao of ISE/USJ, in collaboration with Dr. Cristina Calheiros from CIIMAR.
In her talk, attended by GEG team members and executives, Prof. Tagulao shared about the value of mangroves for remediation of coastal water pollution, as well as their valuable role in climate change adaptation and mitigation (coastline protection, blue carbon) for coastal cities like Macao. She also emphasized the importance of collaborating with the community, including industries like GEG, for the protection and conservation of local ecosystems like the mangroves.
This talk aligns with SDGs 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 13 (Climate Action), 14 (Life Below Water) and 15 (Life on Land).
Since its establishment in 2015, the Business Club has been committed to promoting the learning and application of business knowledge to USJ students. The Business Club organised activities for USJ students every year, including competitions, seminars, and visits to government departments and businesses in the Greater Bay Area. This year, the Business Club receives funding from the Education and Youth Development Bureau through the Student Association in the Annual Activity Funding Scheme for Promoting Student Comprehensive Development (促進學生綜合發展年度活動資助計劃) to organise the “Werewolves of Business Street” Competition.
The members of the Business Club put months of effort into game design, equipment preparation, and promotion of the competition. The game rules are similar to the famous “Werewolves” game, but the players take up roles in a business, namely ordinary employees, analysts, organisation psychologists, auditors, undercover and commercial criminals. Through the competition, participants deepen their knowledge of commercial crimes, their harm to a company and society, and how different company roles can help fight off commercial criminals. To win the game, contestants have to use their business negotiation skills; that is to:
Comprehend and collect of useful information.
Understand the needs of other parties.
Master communication skills.
Be good listeners.
Contestants also need to use their critical thinking and reasoning to persuade and guide other contestants in the right direction.
The competition was successfully held on Thursday, 17 March 2022, at the Ilha Verde campus. Two rounds of competition were hosted by Business Club members Chan Chan Him (Luis) and Ao Cheok U (Sam) and judged by Prof. Jenny Lao-Phillips and Prof. Florence Lei. Among 16 undergraduate and graduate student contestants, Chan Kun Hei (Edison) won the championship, while Tong Weng Ka (Wing) and Pang Wing Yan were awarded prizes of 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up, respectively.
Since 2009, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) and the Correctional Services Bureau have been cooperating to develop a Prison Outreach Programme to prepare incarcerated individuals for re-entry into society by providing bachelor level courses to enhance their professional knowledge and increase their employment opportunities. The Programme aims to guide and encourage incarcerated/rehabilitated individuals to improve their professional quality to the college level.
To promote and encourage incarcerated individuals to receive higher education, USJ and the Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) have recently signed a partnership agreement to award "Outreach Programme - Prison Education Scholarships" to those who have achieved the best results in the first phase of the Programme of USJ, so as to encourage incarcerated individuals to pursue studies in prison.
Currently, USJ is establishing a scholarship scheme for incarcerated individuals with economic difficulties and outstanding academic performance. USJ expects to support incarcerated individuals with outstanding academic performance and students from low-income families by fund raising for scholarships and grants his year. By doing so, the lives of incarcerated individuals and their families can be improved.
The subjects offered by the Programme depend on the course schedule of the Bachelor's Degree in Social Work. Individuals spend six years completing a majority of their social work courses in prison, and a final internship is conducted on campus upon re-entry into the society. Those who complete the whole Programme will be granted a diploma and qualify to work in relevant industries like social services. In this academic year, through the Social Work Community Organizations Programme, USJ has invited Chio LAN Ieng, Director of Community Services of the Macao Federation of Trade Unions, and Hong Wai Tong, Director of Iao Hon Community Center of the Macao Federation of Neighborhood Associations, to share with incarcerated students the current situation of community services provided by social service organisations in Macao, strengthening communication between incarcerated individuals and practitioners and changing the negative and stereotyped image of those incarcerated.
On May, 2022, USJ's Department of Social Work will assist in organising the "World Social Work Day" in Macao. A drama performed by social work students, “Let's Work Hard Again - Renewal Service Exchange Session”, aims to help incarcerated individuals out of difficulties faced when they return to society and the ethical issues encountered by social workers providing services. Additionally, representatives from the Correctional Services Bureau, Social Welfare Bureau, rehabilitated individuals, and related service providers are invited to share their views on the topic, so as to promote the development of related services and raise the awareness of the community on renewal services.

The "Sakura Festival 2022" was held on the 17th and 18th of March 2022 in the University's Student Lounge.
During the two-day event, students could buy and try different types of coffee and the special "Sakura Favourite pour-over," brewed and poured by members of the USJ Single Origin Coffee Club.
Cherry blossoms were used as the main theme during the blooming period of the campus' cherry trees so that students can remember the moment during the blossoming season.
To promote care for the environment, participants enjoyed discounts for their coffees if they took photos of the cherry trees during the event or brought their reusable cups.
USJ would like to express its gratitude to "Black Coffee" and Ms. Yoyo Kou for their full sponsorship, and to Ms. Kathy Kok and Ms. Kinki Chan for cooperating with the desserts sold in this event.
All of the returns from the coffee sales will be used for the future development of the USJ Single Origin Coffee Club.
The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) held its Thanksgiving Mass in light of its 25th Anniversary on the 18th of March, 2022, with invited guests, USJ staff members, alumni and students alike. The Mass was presided by the Bishop of Macao and Chancellor of USJ, His Excellency Bishop Stephen Lee Bun Sang, at the Cathedral of the Nativity of Our Lady (Sé Cathedral).
During the Mass, bishop Lee cited the Holy Father’s Pastoral Letter Patris corde (“With the heart of a father”), encouraging everyone to imitate the fatherly virtues of the Holy Patriarch, Saint Joseph. The bishop also gave thanks to the Lord for the growth and development of USJ in the past 25 years and welcomed all students and teachers alike to ask for grace for the next 25 years.
After the Mass, invited guests and participants took a group photo at the Ruins of Saint Paul’s, a place where Catholic Higher Education began in East Asia and a reminder of how the University is rooted in a long tradition of intercultural exchange that has been the hallmark of Catholic higher education in Macau since the College of Saint Paul, founded in 1954.
The Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) and the USJ Green Committee, along with students and staff from the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), joined hands to plant mangroves along the Taipa coastline last March 19, 2022.
The activity was a part of the yearly effort, led by mangrove forests researcher of ISE/USJ, Prof. Karen Tagulao, to promote the value of mangroves in Macao and raise environmental awareness in the local community.
The activity also relates to USJ’s initiative in addressing the SDGs (11: Sustainable cities and communities; 13:Climate Action; 14- Life Below Water; 15:Life on Land). Participants from USJ, together with their families, successfully planted around 1000 seedlings of Kandelia obovata (秋茄樹) Aegiceras corniculatum (桐花樹).
The seminar is open to the remaining members of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Education, the University of Saint Joseph and the general public that are interested in the field of Psychology.

The Faculty of Social Sciences and Education of USJ was invited to take part in the "A March to Wellness" month at Macau Anglican College on the 16th of March, 2022.
Prof. Jacky Ho and Prof. Andrew Ng from the Department of Social Work of FSSE, conducted an interactive discussion on the topic of "Be Good to Yourself" with a group of 282 junior high school students.
This sharing aimed to raise awareness of self-care and wellbeing in the face of personal and social challenges through games and discussion. Students actively participated, and tools on self-care and wellness were provided at the end of the session. This form of collaboration is part of the "ConnectUs" Initiative and demonstrates USJ's commitment to serving its beloved community's needs and care for our youth.
On Saturday, 12th of March 2022, a delegation from the General Association of Chinese Students of Macau (AECM) led by Mr. Jacky Mio, the vice-president of the 61st Executive Committee, visited the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) for a campus tour and meeting. The delegation was warmly received by the members of the 7th University of Saint Joseph Students’ Association (USJSA.
The campus tour was led by the chairman, António Ambrose and vice-chairman of the Executive Committee, Ding Tam and Maximas Wu. The delegation visited the Library, Gym, Students’ Lounge, various offices, Digital Fabrication Lab, Don Bosco Auditorium and the Rooftop Garden. After the tour, the delegation held a meeting at the Students’ Lounge.
In the meeting, chairman António thanked the AECM on behalf of the USJSA for their continuous support, and the Vice-chairman Tam and vice-president Mio of the AECM exchanged the mission statements of their respective organisations.
Vice-chairman Wu remarked that the cabinet of the USJSA was passionate yet inexperienced; therefore, it was a relatively tough start for the team. Vice-president Mio reassured that the AECM would give their most extensive support to the USJSA. The two parties then exchanged thoughts about the academic challenges posed by the pandemic and future inter-university collaborations.
Among the delegation of the AECM were Ms. Ng Ka Kei and Ms. Tou Ka I, Students Affairs Coordinators; Mr. Ho Tin Hou, President of the Academic Standing Committee for undergraduates; Mr. U Ion Leong, Executive President of the Academic Standing Committee for undergraduates; Ms. Celina Delgado de Sousa and Ms. Li Iao In, Ministers of the AECM.
The School of Education’s (SED) Year 1 Bachelor of Education (BEd) students hosted 35 kindergarten students from Ilha Verde School in a storytelling activity on the 15th March at University of Saint Joseph's (USJ) Kent Wong Gallery.
Under the guise of Promoting Multiple Intelligences through Reading and Play, the BEd Year 1 students introduced techniques to demonstrate how books and activities can stimulate different learning styles and imagination, as well as increase children's vocabulary, story comprehension, and high-level thinking skills. In addition, the event provided pre-service teachers with an opportunity to develop storytelling techniques, create original materials, and design story-related activities.
The storytelling session is one of many community outreach initiatives to contribute to schools and the Macao community in carrying out the Faculty of Social Science and Education’s (FSSE) mission to promote powerful education to inspire and nurture intellectual enquiry and whole-person development.
The event, organised by the Dean of FSSE, Prof Elisa Monteiro and Head of the SED, Prof Kiiko Ikegami, is hoped to bring the joy of reading to students from an early age. A book drive was held by the SED in the lead up to the event and the generous donations allowed each participant to depart with a great learning experience and a book to encourage continued reading at home.
The mission of the Jesuits is to place ‘great emphasis on forming “people for others”. Students are engaged in the process of exploring the distinctive and constructive ways in which their knowledge and talents will best serve society’ (AJCU, 2021). In other words, the Jesuits’ goal of higher education is to nourish students to help others and to make this world a better place to live beyond the boundaries of nations. Similarly, Cardinal John Henry Newman, an impactful Catholic educator in the 19th Century, argued in his most after-sought book, the Idea of a University (Newman, 2008), the aim of a university is to create a true academic community where scholars and students can interact and learn knowledge from each other. I argue that Newman's ideal aims of a university have been achieved by the Jesuit universities with regard to universal knowledge and liberal education. On the contrary, the unique goal of Jesuit higher education on "becoming men and women for others" in the Asian context is essential, but it was not mentioned by Newman.

"Visions of Confucius in the classroom of Portuguese as a Foreign Language in Macau: between tradition and modernity"
ABOUT THE TALK:
Starting from the lecturer’s own reflection on her/his teaching practice, we seek to understand the role of the beliefs implicated in the teaching of the Portuguese language in Macau, moreover the ones that lie at the origin of proposals defending the use of specific teaching methodologies targeting Chinese learners. The paramount differences between Portuguese culture and Chinese culture, and the legacy of the Confucian principles, at work in MASR educational system, lie at the foundation of these beliefs. Therefore, we aim at understanding the validity of the beliefs that emerged from this setting, which implies to acknowledge MSAR socio-political and educational context, and also to ponder the current influence of Confucian principles in the act of profiling the Chinese learner. This issue brought us to conduct a case study in several MSAR educational institutions, whose results will be presented at this lecture.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:Prof.

Rector’s Remarks for USJ Career Fair 2022
It is a particular pleasure to contribute a few words to the event page for the 2022 USJ Career Fair. This year we are honoured to be co-organising this fair, sponsored by DSEDJ, with the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Economic and Trade Promotion Association.
Each year, as a cohort of students comes to the end of its degree or diploma programmes, minds naturally turn to what next. The 444 students who graduated from USJ in 2021 went on to a variety of careers or further education. With over 80% of our graduating students finding exciting opportunities for work or further study, USJ leads the field in Macau. This year we will have over 450 graduating students and I know that they will be excited by the variety and scope of positions available to them. I also know that prospective employers will find them to be extremely well prepared for the workplace.
The Rev’d Professor Stephen Morgan, RectorMarch 2022

Mangrove forests, or mangroves, are among the most valuable and richest ecosystems on Earth and an important coastal natural treasure. They protect coastal areas from sea-level rise and extreme weather events. They help to mitigate climate change, improve water quality and harbor a wide variety of flora and fauna, in addition to their socio-economic and cultural relevance. Mangroves are considered transition environments between terrestrial and marine ecosystems, influenced by sea and rivers. Macao is home to a thriving mangrove forest that stretches for about 4 km off the coast of Taipa-Cotai.
The Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) has been doing extensive work in the local community on environmental awareness and the protection of these aquatic habitats. Now, this work is going international.
After being presented in the University and more than ten schools in Macao, the interactive Mangroves exhibition, under the coordination of Prof. Karen Tagulao, Programme Coordinator for the Bachelor of Environmental Sciences of ISE/USJ, is being presented in Portugal, on the 15th anniversary of the Centro de Monitorização e Interpretação Ambiental (CMIA) from the 22nd of March to the 2nd of September 2022 in Vila do Conde (Porto).
ISE/USJ hopes to continue to inspire children and adults in Macao and beyond, to better protect this important "treasure" that belongs to all of us.
On Saturday, 5th of March, 2022, the Macao Institute of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Relics (MICRCR) and the Library of the University of Saint Josep (USJ) jointly held a workshop on "Principles and Methods of Anoxic Disinfestation Technology" at USJ Ilha Verde Campus.
The workshop included theoretical explanations and practical demonstrations to give participants a better understanding of book pest control.
Macao's climate is warm and humid, and the problem of insect pests in books is serious and prominent. The USJ Library deals with thousands of books and paper documents affected by insect pests every year, therefore pest control work is vital.
Last year, the USJ Library installed the "EXPM Anoxia Disinfestation Bubble Kit" from Portugal, which is now in operation. The books and archives in the library are processed according to international standards, and the results are very satisfactory. By operating this system, Mr. Francisco Chan, the president of MICRCR, explained Macao's common pest problems and physical control methods to the participants and shared the principles and precautions of anoxic treatment to pests.
Through the workshop, participants learned about the efficiency of the equipment, pest control steps, and how to use physical methods to treat the pests that destroy books and paper documents.
The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) organises several events and free public lectures that provide access to educational resources in different areas and topics every academic year.
These events aim to raise awareness and disseminate evidence-based practices and interventions. Some events bring together USJ students and professors, and some are open to partner institutions and the general public.
Prof. Tagulao shared the value of mangroves for climate change adaptation and mitigation during the online Public Talk “Macao’s urban mangroves: a coastal treasure”, in Porto, Portugal.
To celebrate the World Water Day, Galaxy Entertainment Group hosted a series of activities, including an invited Talk by Prof. Karen Arano Tagulao of ISE/USJ, on March 23, 2022.
USJ and the Social Welfare Bureau have recently signed a partnership agreement to award “Outreach Programme – Prison Education Scholarships” to promote and encourage incarcerated individuals to receive higher education.
The Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) and the USJ Green Committee, along with students and staff from the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), joined hands to plant mangroves along the Taipa coastline last March 19, 2022.
The Faculty of Social Sciences and Education is hosting a Research in Psychology Seminar, associated with “SDG 3 Promoting Health and Well-being”, on the 22nd of April.
The Faculty of Social Sciences and Education of USJ was invited to take part in the “A March to Wellness” month at Macau Anglican College on the 16th of March, 2022.
Students from the Bachelor of Education hosted a story telling activity, under the guise of “Promoting Multiple Intelligences” through Reading and Play, to kindergarten students on the 15th of March.
The Macau Ricci Institute is hosting the Online Forum titled “Jesuit Higher Education: Becoming Men And Women For Others. Ideal And Reality”, on 30 March 2022.
The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is hosting a Public Lecture titled “Visions of Confucius in the classroom of Portuguese as a Foreign Language in Macau: between tradition and modernity” on March 29.
The MBA Talks 2022 on “5 Game Changing Principles for Successful Project Delivery – A Strategic Approach to Project Management” by Stephen Berry will be held on 16 Mar, 2022.
The “Mangroves: A Coastal Treasure” interactive exhibition organised by ISE/USJ is going to be held at the 15th anniversary of the Centro de Monitorização e Interpretação Ambiental (CMIA) in Vila do Conde (Porto) in Portugal, from the March 22 to September 2, 2022.
The Macao Institute of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Relics and the USJ Library jointly held a workshop on “Principles and Methods of Anoxic Disinfestation Technology” on 5th of March.
