On November 29th, 2019, the “Macao Youth Entrepreneurship & Innovation Cultivation Seminar”, co-organised by the Youth Entrepreneurship and Innovation Preparatory Committee and the Office of Student and Alumni Affairs (OSAA) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) was held at USJ's Ilha Verde Campus.
Mr. Carlos Lam Ka-Vai, CEO of Macao Young Entrepreneur Incubation Centre, was invited to be a guest speaker for the seminar. He introduced the latest developments of youth entrepreneurship in the Greater Bay Area, the background and vision of the Macao Young Entrepreneur Incubation Centre, as well as opportunities for youth entrepreneurship in the Greater Bay Area in the future.
Mr. Lam stated that “the main target of youth entrepreneurship development in Macao is to start entrepreneurship and innovation projects in Macao which can connect commercial and trade co-cooperation between the Portuguese-speaking countries and cities of Greater Bay Area, using the advantages of Macao as one of the cities of Greater Bay Area and its positioning as the Commercial and Trade Co-operation Service Platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, rather than motivating the youth to start their business in Mainland China”.
During the seminar, Mr. Lam also introduced how the Macao Young Entrepreneur Incubation Centre support the development of youth entrepreneurship in terms of capital, space, regulations and networking, as well as the requirements of funding application.
At the end of the insightful seminar, Mr. Lam answered questions from students about entrepreneurship.

ABOUT THE TALK
This talk explores how some people excel at language learning while others do not. Over 90% people in Brazil drop out before they achieve intermediate levels of proficiency. Regardless of aptitude, this research shows that people learn in radically different ways, and that successful learners develop individual strategies quickly and effectively. But 90% of learners need help, and some more than others. This process of developing language-learning strategies happens in 5 stages and teachers can help students in each step. At the intensive Portuguese Course for Foreigners at UFBA, this program has resulted in a drastic reduction in dropout rates.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Prof. Dr. Ricardo Gualda holds a PhD degree in Hispanic Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin. He is currently an Assistant Professor in Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PFL), the Coordinator of the Undergraduate Programme in PFL, Head of the PFL Section of the Institute of Letters, and Coordinator of the Portuguese Course for Foreign Students and Scholars at the Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA), in Salvador, Brazil. Previously, he was a Lecturer in Portuguese at Columbia University. His expertise includes Spanish and Portuguese Pedagogy and Second Language Acquisition as well as Latin American Political Discourse.

ABOUT THE TALK
Anthropogenic activities are causing global climate change at an unprecedented rate. The uptake of additional carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is changing ocean chemistry, with potentially far-reaching impacts on marine life. There is a great concern that the environmental change is outpacing the rate of genetic adaptation. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that some responses can be plastic but also heritable across generations. Over the past years Prof. Celia has been investigating the impacts of ocean acidification on marine fishes through experiments, molecular work and computational analyses. Unique transgenerational experiments were performed to determine the molecular response of a coral reef fish to short-term, developmental and transgenerational exposure to near future elevated CO2. This aids in teasing apart plastic responses due to developmental plasticity and reveals within-generation specific reactions to be driven by epigenetic regulators. Importantly, it was found that altered gene expression for the majority of within-generation responses returns to baseline levels following parental exposure to elevated CO2 conditions. Furthermore, molecular responses of offspring vary largely with parental phenotype which was measured by their level of behavioural tolerance to elevated CO2. In this talk, some of the experiments of the last years will be shown with the presentation of some unpublished data of studies from the wild. The aim is to further understand behaviour and adaptive potential of marine organisms to the rapidly changing environment.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Celia Schunter, coming from a land-locked place, was always fascinated by the marine world. Early in her career, she started combining the study of marine organisms with genetic and molecular tools. She received her BSc in Marine Biology from James Cook University, Australia and her Masters and Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of Barcelona, Spain. During her Postdoc at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia, she used functional genomics to understand the effects of ocean acidification on fish within and across generations. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor at the Swire Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of Hong Kong, where her laboratory continues to explore impacts of climate change on behaviour and population dynamics of marine organisms, including the underlying molecular mechanisms of adaptation.

The Rector of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), Prof. Fr. Peter Stilwell, and the Director of the Public and International Relations (PIRO), Mrs. Ana Paula Mota, attended the 2019 International Conference “Transforming Higher Education for the Future” organised by the International Association of Universities (IAU). The event was hosted by the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP), in Mexico, from November 13th to 15th, 2019.
This international conference was dedicated to exploring how higher education leaders envisage higher education for the future, namely how universities should face the impact of rapid technological progress and the urgent call to develop sustainable societies.
The four plenary sessions covered: I “Rethinking higher education in a transforming world”; II “Between tradition and innovation”; III “Aiming higher in a transforming world”; and IV “Creating the future for higher education (designing solutions)”. Following each plenary session, breakout meetings studied detailed aspects of these challenges and afforded opportunities for networking and documentation sharing between institutions.
During plenary session III (“Aiming higher in a transforming world”), BBC StoryWorks officially launched its new series promoting the role of higher education as a catalyst for developing sustainable societies. This documentary series, developed in cooperation with IAU, spotlights exciting university projects making a positive change in their communities by promoting diversity, leadership and social responsibility. USJ was among the 35 universities from 30 countries selected for this project. The three-minute films provide a captivating patchwork illustration of the essential contribution being made by higher education to social development worldwide. The new portal is available here and the mini-documentary on USJ is under the heading “Leadership”.
At the end of the conference, participants were invited to a Green Campus Tour of BUAP and a visit to its Botanical Garden.

Mr. Warren Man Ho LI (李文灝), a USJ PhD Student in Science, gave a presentation at the high level International Workshop on Food Loss and Waste Prevention targeting the Southeast and East Asian region from Oct. 16th-18th 2019, Tokyo, Japan. The workshop was organised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan as the current G20 presidency holder, FAO Japan Liaison Office, UN Environment and the Thünen Institute (Germany).
Mr. Warren gave his presentation in Session 3 of the Workshop: Legal Challenges and Policy Options, with the title “Legal Compliance and Implementation of the Circular Economy for Food Waste Reduction & Handling in Macau and Hong Kong.” The overall aim of the workshop was to support the delivery of Target 12.3 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which demands to halve food waste at retail and consumer level, and reducing food loss across the supply chain. The 30 participants from various South-East Asian countries were seeking ways to raise awareness in their specific communities and to facilitate increased cooperation and network building among countries in Asia with respect to sharing knowledge and experiences in measuring and reducing Food Loss and Waste (FLW) at all levels. Providing guidance on setting baselines and measuring progress on FLW, defining strategies on FLW reduction, developing effective actions targeting households and the supply chain, and using FLW to raise ambition on greenhouse gas reduction. Food production accounts globally for 24 % of overall Greenhouse Gas Emissions (ICCP 2019), and the global emissions of FLW taken as country come in 3rd after China and the US. Food Waste Prevention is also a serious social issue, as today 820 million people in the world are still hungry, underscoring the immense challenge of achieving the UN Zero Hunger target by 2030.
Mr. Warren Man Ho LI (李文灝) is a USJ PhD student in Science, pursuing research on “COP21 Compliance and Sustainable Development through Integrated Solid Waste Management: Implementation of the Circular Economy in the Pearl River Delta Area.” (supervised by Prof. Franz Gassner). He is also working as General Manager of Ultra Clean Waste Services Limited of Macao, China.

About the topic:
A number of studies focus on the evangelical and missionary role by the members of the Society of Jesus in the Latin American and Asian frontiers. The speaker will use the GECEM Database (“Global Encounters between China and Europe Project) to compare two Jesuit mission areas and its role in the global commercial routes. First, he will focus on the Jesuit activities in the Philippines, and their links with Macao, Canton and Acapulco (New Spain). Second, he shall explain the commercial routes between Jesuit Missions in Paraguay and Buenos Aires, Asunción up to Río de Janeiro. Both case studies will show us how these non-state agents - the Jesuits - built their own networks and exchange channels for Chinese goods distribution (i.e. silk, porcelain, musk, amber and others) between Asia and Latin America. Thus, the local scale scheme of Jesuit studies will be integrated with analysis of inter-regional processes on a continental scale by using mainly Jesuit letters, regulations, reports, accounts and stories. The underlying hypothesis is that the Jesuits were active agents in the circulation of the Chinese goods and encouraged their consumption among local populations throughout the Latin America.
About the speaker:
Pedro Miguel Omar Svriz Wucherer - Postdoctoral Researcher at GECEM Project, UPO
Pedro Miguel Omar Svriz Wucherer has PhD in History and Humanities Studies by Pablo de Olavide University. His PhD dissertation was on the Guarani militias from Jesuit Reductions of Paraguay between 17th and 18th centuries. Presently, he is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Project GECEM “Global Encounters between China and Europe: Trade Networks, Consumption and Cultural Exchanges in Macau and Marseille, 1680-1840”. The project is funded by ERC (European Research Council) -Starting Grant scheme under the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (Horizon 2020).Prof. Manuel Perez Garcia is its principal investigator. The postdoctoral research focuses on the commercial Jesuit activities between Asia, America and Europe during the early modern era. Svriz Wucherer has published several articles in SSCI & AHCI indexed Journals (Revista História, 2011; Hispania Sacra, 2013; Historia Social, 2018; and Revista Electrónica de Fuentes y Archivos, 2018) and presented his work in many national and international forums. He has also carried out research projects in research centers in Spain and abroad, for instance in European University Institute (Italy, 2016) and the Lateinamerika-Institut (LAI) at Freie Universität Berlin (Germany, 2017). During last two months, Svriz Wucherer has been a Visiting Researcher at the Macau Ricci Institute and focused on the sources of Arquivo de Macau.

ABOUT THE TALK
The story of women in film (both as subject and object) has been wildly disregarded in Portuguese cinematic culture. Ana Sofia Pereira and Vera Casaca, both storytellers, both screenwriters, both women in film, will bring a new insight into the reality women in Portuguese cinematic culture face. Ana Sofia Pereira will use the research she has conducted on women screenwriters and directors in Portugal as a starting point to expand on how women have influenced Portuguese cinematic History and the films and characters created. Vera Casaca will depart from her real-life experience as a filmmaker to discuss the reality of working in cinema upon returning to her hometown. She will focus on the hardships she found, not only as a woman, but as a southerner and as a filmmaker working with no/low budget films.
Exploring and discussing Portuguese cinematic History through a feminine perspective, this public lecture aims to grant a voice to Portuguese women filmmakers that, up until recently, have been rendered invisible and voiceless.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Ana Sofia Pereira has just submitted her PhD on the topic "Women Screenwriters: A Dynamic Definition of Language in the Feminine in Portuguese Cinema". Besides her work as a researcher and lecturer, she is also a screenwriter and script supervisor having worked in countries such as Portugal, United States and Brazil. Her latest work includes a TV-Series that premiered in one of Portugal’s major networks early in 2019.
Vera Casaca has studied directing and scriptwriting at the School of Visual Arts and at the New York Film Academy in New York. She has written and directed “On the Phone with God” and “If Poirot was here”. She contributes to the cultural magazine “Algarve Informativo” with articles about cinema. She teaches scriptwriting, storyboard and continuity in Portugal.

The Public and International Relations Office (PIRO) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) organised three groups of colleagues from various administrative units and from the University’s Institute of Science and Environment to participate in the 10th Edition of Macau Eco TrailHiker. The event, which took place on Saturday, November 2nd, 2019, had around 2,600 participants and 650 teams competing in three race categories. In these races, participants ran along different natural trails in Coloane, exploring the greener side of Macao. USJ’s teams participated in the 20km corporate challenge as well as the 10km fun family course.
By participating in this initiative, relationships amongst colleagues were strengthened and public awareness of ecological and environmental issues and the need for an eco-friendlier lifestyle in Macao was raised. Additionally, the raised funds will go into supporting the operational expenses of community event beneficiaries, such as The Cradle of Hope Association and the Salvation Army – Hong Kong and Macau Command.
